nba insider Sham Shirania has dropped a massive report on the Celtics and their future trade plans as Shams has revealed Brad Stevens master plan going forward We’re going to dive into exactly what forward as Shams has dropped a huge report here Some big information Let’s dive right into it here now So you can see this here The Celtics don’t view next year as a rebuild season Boston sees 2025 with that Jason Tatum as a retool rather than a rebuild And of course we were waiting for some clarity on what Brad Stevens plan is going to be But we also of course have a trade update to go over today which we’ll dive into in a few moments here But let’s start with the report from Sham So you can see this here and let’s kind of do a little bit of a recap and you know put some perspective into things here So one of the most intriguing offseason story lines around the NBA surrounds roster construction of the Boston Celtics You fast forward a little bit there to the third paragraph The Celtics are faced with decisions around the roster The franchise is well into the punitive second tax apron and Jason Tatum is set to miss a bunch of times a bunch of time rather sorry And we know that the Lakers are uh or the Celtics rather are going very very aggressive in pursuits of trades to get under that luxury tax Shams has come out and said quote with how the Celtics are operating right now they’re operating as if they’re looking at next year as a retooling year So we finally have some clarity Now what this means directly is still a little bit unclear And of course we’ll know over the next week and over the next two weeks as the NBA finals conclude here tonight as the NBA draft inches closer and closer as free agency inches closer and closer What the Celtics do Do they trade up for picks There’s a lot of question marks here surrounding that However this is pretty interesting because a retool rather than a tear down a rebuild likely means that Brown and Derrick White will stick around Shania has said that teams are offering a ton for White and Brown Boston is not planning to move them unless it’s for something monumental So I think the best way to take this report from Shams is to basically go come out and you know we can basically say that in all likelihood bearing a massive grandfather godfather offer for Jason um you know for Jaylen Brown and Derrick White they’re going to be keeping and holding on to those two guys Now at the same time rather than a rebuild or retooling there’s this almost increases and this definitely increases the trade likelihood of Drew Holiday Christophs Porzingis and of course I guess some of the other guys like letting Luke Car go Sam Hower things like that because it’s clear they want to remain somewhat competitive They don’t want to completely throw their team away I mean if they wanted to fully rebuild and then rebuild around uh Jason Tatum they would probably trade Jaylen Brown or Derek White Though I think you know Derrick White’s has insurmountable value But they probably trade Jaylen Brown and then look around I think they’re going to keep those guys But this makes a trade for Drew Holiday and Christopher Spzing is even that much more likely because in an offseason that’s going to be filled with a ton of things as literally as I’m recording this video like literally seconds ago That’s why I paused Kevin Durant was just traded to the Houston Rockets makes things a lot more interesting for for the NBA in general because it’s going to be uh anyway Kevin Durant was just traded to the Houston Rockets in case you guys haven’t heard yet for Jaylen Green Dylan Brooks the number 10 pick So it’s a um craziness going on right now Zeroing back in the Celtics for a second here This is very intriguing because not only now are of course you know the Celtics look at this as a retool year they can now really be in a position to trade a guy like Drew Holidayiday And I think as we continue to get closer and closer big trades are going down all these different things It is clear that the Boston Celtics are going to be moving off from one of their if not both of their you know luxury tax guys You know Christophs Porzingis and Drew Holiday Now I think Drew Holiday there’s been a lot of rumblings about teams like the Mavericks There’s been a lot of rumblings about teams just around the NBA and I think that now again with this report we now know what their plan is At least we know they’re not going to go on a full rebuild And let me know down below what your thoughts are on this report from Shams It’s good to know have some clarity that it’s not going to be a full retool or rebuild rather It’s going to be a retool So we can assume for now that they keep Jaylen Brown But maybe looking at some of the packages I mean that KD garnered and that other players are going to garner here if Yiannis gets traded which is doubtful and probably won’t happen What they could get for Jaylen Brown We saw it with Desmond Bane and it’s making trades a lot more likely But let’s dive into a recent report from Bobby Marks Three trades the Boston can build around We’re just going to focus on one here today I will have videos coming out on the other ones But let’s start here And again you can go you know look at this on ESPN.com from Bobby Marks So it is offer number one trade Drew Holidayiday This is the Celtics get PJ Washington and the Dallas Mavericks get Drew Holiday The Nets get Jaden Hardy for Caleb Brown and a 2027 first round pick The Clippers get Oliver Maxis Prosper So this one is I mean kind of crazy So the Celtics are essentially getting PJ Washington in exchange for dumping Drew Holidayiday’s contract and giving up a first round pick Now it’s also becoming more and more clear with any move and any report that is coming out now that a Drew Holiday trade is going to require the team to actually give up assets and no team is going to you know take them for free I guess And you can see it here like the Celtics are probably going to have to dump picks in order to give up Drew Holiday because he has $135 million left whatever it is on his contract But this opens up a ton of different things and the kind of you can see here the Celtics limitations as a team over the salary cap second apron Boston is $23 million over and unless the Brooklyn Nets are willing to absorb Chris’s salary There is no direct path to getting under the apron with one singular trade Shedding salary will likely require multiple moves Under those gu guidelines ESPN’s Kevin Pelton has recommended three trade offers with NBA insider Bobby Mark selecting the Celtics most realistic path So this saves them 135 to 140 million in luxury tax It is essentially just the Drew Holiday contract Now keep in mind you don’t need to give up that 135 million to get under the luxury You just need to get $23 million you know shed $23 million because of course that just finished right now As you look at it from the perspective of the Boston Celtics you’re getting a and as it pertains to the retool thing you’re getting a very good forward back in PJ Washington I think he could fit really well alongside Jason Tatum once he comes back But also this would give you a year to kind of figure out how things I just be somewhat competitive having PJ Washington Jaylen Brown Derrick White Is it going to win the Eastern Conference Doubtful But it’s interesting And are you better with PJ Washington instead of Drew Holiday Like overall probably not I mean you can maybe make the argument And I think I’d still prefer Drew Holiday but it’s interesting there And then of course the Mavericks are getting their guard in Drew Holiday and the Nets are basically absorbing contracts and taking on a first round pick And the Clippers of course this is a four team deal but it’s going to be something like this where the Celtics have to give up a pick but not only like you’re not just dumping Drew Holiday You’re not just giving up a 2027 first and then getting rid of Holiday You’re still getting a player back in return that is basically a cheaper version of Drew Holiday And I’m not saying that PJ Washington and Drew Holly are similar players at all but by cheaper version I mean someone who can play in the everyday you know lineup at a cheaper price And that’s what PJ Washington is Of course he’s not a point guard He is a power forward but he’s also a very very solid player and has really excelled defensively since joining the Dallas Mavericks So from the Hornets it’s going to be interesting to see what happens here At the end of the day like there’s reports coming out you know Drew Holiday for Demard Rosen and Devin Carter There’s a lot of different avenues here but one thing is clear is that the Celtics are retooling rather than rebuilding And I think that lends credits to the fact that a Drew Holiday trade is imminent here and things are going
