Rich Eisen: What the Lakers Sale Means for Team Owners in Every Sport | The Rich Eisen Show

the New York Yankees uh the Dallas Cowboys I think any owner of any other professional North American sports team um kind of happy oh my god hearing that not even the full boat of the Los Angeles Lakers is worth $10 billion just a portion of the Lakers is worth $10 billion no that’s not true it’s a 10 billion valuation uhhuh uhhuh so Genie sold about half for five i mean semantics i’m just math the full valuation of the team is $10 billion math matters so the Cowboys Yeah but you can’t say that’s good for everyone because there’s only two three franchises that can command any more money than that i wouldn’t think we know Jerry ain’t selling no yeah but if he wanted to he’d get 20 at this point but you know what do we know about the new owner of the Los Angeles well I mean she Jeanie Bus by the way congratulations to you Jeie yeah uh cuz uh according to all reports she has been the one who has been uh shephering this deal and I imagine you know the last thing she really wanted to do uh deep down was sell the Lakers get out from the family business um in terms of being the controlling owner of the Los Angeles Lakers but I’m sure she kept on saying “Not enough nope not yet nope not yet nope not yet $10 billion okay I’ll talk to my siblings and we’ll get a majority vote cuz apparently that’s what Jerry put in his uh trust that the only people who could sell the team are his uh kids and they had to have a vote and a majority vote and Jeanie Bus is the one who put it all together and got this deal across the finish line and turned a 66 million change acquisition of the team back in the day into a $10 billion sale congrats to you Genie Bus and the Lakers and the fact that she’s going to still be the governor of the team for the foreseeable future and that makes sense she’s a terrific face front individual in this town she is associated with the Lakers she also has uh you know relationships one would think business-wise um that are too valuable to sideline if you’re new to the NBA she knows other governors she knows how to negotiate she knows how to read the room politically and now one would think the days knowing the new owner of the team christopher I give you the floor here on what you know yeah mark Walter Rich you and him have something in common degrees from Northwestern he’s a Kraton guy he’s from Iowa uh JD from Northwestern as well uh big in the big in the sports world in addition to being CEO of the Guggenheim Partners you know a private global financial services firm $325 billion in assets that they manage big he owns a quarter of the Dodgers he owns uh 12% of Chelsea uh the Sparks uh he owns a Formula 1 team women’s professional hockey league uh he sits on boards at Kraton and Northwestern he did own 27% of the Lakers before this and now he’s buying an additional 48% so he now takes over 75% majority owner of the Lakers and one would think based on um just take a look at what they’re doing with the Dodgers uh the days of yeah we’re not paying coaches we’re not paying this we’re not paying that we’re not going to be in the top percentile of spending i would imagine those days are over um I don’t know does he when he gets Luca to sign the max does he get him to defer 99% of the deal so they avoid the second apron is that what they do say you can get it in terms of retirement hey uh Luca I’d love for you to meet Shoe Otani show you tell Luca um how we’re paying you would you like to maybe you know get together and uh discuss how we’re paying show Otani show would be like Luca when we’re 55 we buy each of these teams with the money exactly we have coming luca apparently according to reports he got a heads up that the deal was coming short a short heads up and Luca called the Lakers an amazing organization i’m looking forward to meeting Mark excited about the future grateful to Jeanie and the Bus family for welcoming me to LA i’m happy that Genie will continue to be involved i look forward to working with both of them to win championships that’s a man who’s going to stay here huh yeah he’s looking slimmer and the future’s looking fatter to Luca Donuch crazy lebron and Luca and uh what does this mean for the front office what does this mean i I don’t know genie is going to keep running it and they’ll just keep it running it back with just more money behind it which is kind of frightening if you’re the rest of the league the association there’s still you know obviously caps and things of that nature but if they don’t care about paying luxury tax and all that stuff then then what does it matter they’re just going to acquire everyone available yeah just blow past aprons is there a third apron they might create one they might create one call it a Laker apron just for this i don’t know oh and um you know Magic pointing out that it the Lakers are worth more than the Celtics that was a one of my favorite tweets as well you know hey when the Celtics went for six billion I knew the Lakers were worth 10 cool chat uh EMJ right yes chatt chatty EMJ pop that one out listen if you are Jerry Jones if you are the Steinbrers if you are anybody that owns a team in sports right every NFL owners like the Lakers are worth 10 billion the prices have gone way up chuching ching got a deal getting Washington for six and whatever did you see the you know the the original uh acquiring prices of all NBA teams i saw the list uh the of current franchises of what they were went for under current ownership the Knicks Dolan bought them for 300 million bucks oh that’s If the Lakers are worth 10 billion what are the Knicks worth okay 12 right jerry Reintorf that’s the one it was like 10 million or something $16 million he bought the Bulls for oh my god that’s cheap but that’s late 80s prices i understand that but now now the it’s off the charts off the charts and I I I don’t know how he’s gonna figure he’s going to make his money back but again as you pointed out it’s not the like it’s not like oh do I have 10 billion on me here it is all at once it’s not even that much either cuz there’s Right right but still it’s a it’s a massive chunk of change that one would think they’re only going to keep following up on right uh by plugging more money into the system and making them even better and blowing past aprons and that’s why if I’m Luca I’m like “Hey nice to meet you fat stacks.” Fat stacks fat stacks you know nice to meet you you know does Luca now throw out a f i mean it makes sense too dodgers Lakers right makes sense your guy Balmer remember when he bought the the Clippers for two billion everyone’s like overpaid he overpaid and it’s just like he’s the richest he’s one of the richest people on the planet he could two billion for the Clippers looks Yeah but here’s the deal and the Lakers don’t even own their building right but what I’m saying is these teams aren’t going to get It doesn’t matter they’re not going to get as much money as you are for the Lakers like it doesn’t You’re buying the name you’re buying the name you’re buying name record that’s why Genie Bus State name recognition the brand the 18 banners these other teams you know the Washington Wizards get sold they ain’t getting 11 billion first off 17 five of those are Minneapolis 12 Los Angeles man facts matter math matters facts matter how many the Celtics have uh 18 how many were in Boston all of them thank you sir you’re welcome by the way normally I don’t normally I don’t keep Boston you’re usually not on my team there usually turn my back on you thank you well you know I didn’t you know they give you any push back on that cuz I don’t care one way or the other i don’t like No the only one who cares is the hostile environment person who’s not here you understand being though these other teams aren’t going to get that much but you also understand the Lakers when the Lakers have ceremonies they do it like first rate first class just like the Yankees do you know what I mean like they there’s a there’s a certain I wish I knew what that was like new York i’m surprised Rich remembers it’s been so long for the Yankees see I can’t say no i can’t my god the conversation wait a minute the the feed the feeding hand just got bit wow out of nowhere i said “How did you leave teeth marks on me from all the way across the the room?” So easy it was just like right there chris I’m just going to Homer Simpson this conversation like I got nothing all right catch the Rich Eisen Show live weekdays from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m

  1. Really a win-win-win. A win for the Buss family, who get a huge paycheck to (eventually) go away. A win for Mark Walter who gets another marquee U.S. sports franchise to play with. And a HUGE win for Lakers fans, who have had to sit through the longest period of mediocrity in the L.A. Lakers' history after Jerry Buss passed away. Since Dr. Buss died, Jeannie Buss has also managed to push out two of the most iconic Lakers ever from their organization, in Magic Johnson and Jerry West, and in really unforgivable and incompetent ways, especially with Jerry West.

  2. The media makes everything into a drama. I look at it as the Lakers are finally gonna have a grown-up talk. Have adults in the room finally. This organization has been making excuses for how many years now and that’s part of Jeanie buss she blamed her brother she’s no different

  3. Ratings drop dramatically every year, but the TV contracts, salaries and team valuations go up – something has to give at some point.

  4. Is Rich living under a rock ? None of the NBA teams have been a good investment. It is why they are now being sold to investors who made better investments as a side project.
When Jerry Buss bought the Lakers half the trillion dollar companies today didnt even exist.

  5. The 2nd apron still matters since you lose your first round pick if you’re over it for multiple years right? Can’t out spend losing 1st rounders every year

  6. Kurt Rambis dropped to his knees in the grocery store when he heard this news… his 30+ yr free ride on the Buss family as a "senior advisor" and shadow head coach probably won't continue under new ownership

  7. Im a yankees and knicks fan but im genuinely sad hearing about this sale. I hate everything about it. I get it but i hate it

  8. I think this is awesome for the Lakers but the team didn't sell for 10 billion. The percentage of the team sold equated to a 10 billion evaluation for the franchise. It's incredible but let's be as accurate as we can

  9. Rich going on a fat shaming bender lately. Come on, you're a torch bearer for kindness, a reason I watch RES over any. Luka, Juan Soto. Come on. It's off putting.

  10. They sold cause 10 years down the line the nba won't be worth it….get the money NOW…just like celtics mavericks suns….nba DEAD

  11. Sounds like rich people problems while the rest of us are dealing with real people problems. Glad they have billions while we are struggling to feed our kids

  12. Who the heck is the Penguin laughing in the background? Intentional (I hope) but very annoying.

  13. The LOS ANGELES LAKERS caters to 40 million viewers regionally which is more than DOUBLE what Boston Celtics can ever DREAM OFF add to their global brand a 4$ billion price differennce in sale from the Celtics is a BARGAIN. Have anyone drove the inland empire high desert area on the THE WAY TO Vegas. They can drop 2 small countires in there and another major market for the Lakers
