THIS IS HUGE FOR THE MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES
this is absolutely massive for the Grizzlies as we all know Memphis received four first round picks in the Desmond Bane trade and one of those picks just got a lot more valuable today after the blockbuster trade that went down between the Suns and the Rockets hi everybody welcome back to Grizzlies Digest i’m Tristan Harland here for another exciting time to talk about the Grizzlies and before we begin I want to remind everybody that 95.7% of you are not subscribed and hey if you like what you see you like what you hear you enjoy engaging in conversations about our favorite team the Memphis Grizzlies make sure you click that red subscribe button it’s everybody’s favorite price free.99 so yeah the pick just got a lot more valuable um of course Kevin Durant getting traded to the Suns what a trade that was jaylen Green Dylan Brooks a whole bunch of picks going to Phoenix phoenix is trying to probably going to be buying out Bradley Bill a lot of Memphis fans are wanting them to call and see the see the price on Devin Booker things are going down and game seven the NBA finals it’s crazy time to be a basketball fan but another thing I want to do before we begin I want to take a second to acknowledge this of course o recently the founder the owner of FedEx passed away so I just want to put the quote from Grizzlies owner Robert Pah up here and just read it out for you all on behalf of the entire Memphis Grizzlies organization I want to express our deepest condolences to both the Smith and the Greater FedEx family fred Smith has been a driving force in the Memphis community since day one and his endless contributions as a civic leader and corporate citizen are part of an incredible legacy that will be remembered in our community and country forever he will be deeply missed now again I just want to reach out to the Smith family with my own condolences of course the Smith’s huge legacy in Memphis naming rights on the arena the Grizzlies play in the naming rights on the jerseys they play in i’ve had family members work for FedEx friends work for FedEx so again condolences to you guys but back to basketball it’s an exciting time now he it doesn’t come without a little bit of work uh so to speak for the trade now the the pick that the Grizzlies got okay it it’s I don’t know how else to put it but it’s kind of it’s kind of funky wonky okay if you don’t know what that means I’m sorry it’s just an expression but we got to rely on the Wizards now I never thought that I would say that as a Memphis Grizzlies fan but especially since Marcus Smart just got traded to Washington um you know they’ve played over the years and not not a rival or anything just another competit another team in the league that’s not been as competitive as they probably were in the early 2010s with John Wall anyways so the thing about this pick is that the current odds as they stand right now if the Wizards are not phenomenal next season is they get the one pick Phoenix would get the fifth Memphis would get the 15th Orlando to the 18th now this is all for next year so don’t think this is for this year this is for next year so if that was to hold and be correct now we’re an entire year away from that washington would stay at one Memphis would get the fifth pick and the 15th pick and Charlotte would get the 18th now another thing about that pick if Washington’s pick is in the top eight they can swap with Phoenix orlando gets the least favorable of the Washington Phoenix pick memphis gets the least favorable the Washington Phoenix Orlando pick and Charlotte gets the remaining pick now if the pick is to drop outside the top eight and that’s Washington’s pick it goes to the Knicks and drops out of the swap order because the swap order currently has Washington Phoenix Orlando Memphis and Charlotte because the originally the Hornets were set to receive the Suns 26 first first round pick but four teams had the swap rights so now after the memphis Orlando trade that sent Desmond Bane to Orlando for Contavius Cowwell Pope and Cole Anthony and those picks uh excuse me Washington if Washington’s in the top eight which right now it’s what it looks like we’ll get to the roster in a second and we’ll talk about hypotheticals they they can swap with Phoenix memphis gets the two favoritable uh and Charlotte gets the remaining pick now in talking to some people most likely outcome Washington keeps their pick memphis gets Phoenix’s pick possibly the fifth to9 range and either Orlando gets that pick in either Orlando’s or their own whichever is better so the crazy thing is and and the funny thing here is that not only do the Phoenix Suns have to suck the Wizards which I I’m not going to sit here and say the Wizards are going to suck but they didn’t have a good year last season this current season that’s about to end starting Monday uh so crazy crazy crazy crazy and this is all for 2026 this is not even for 2025 so the biggest thing here and this is where I kind of want to go into my discussion Memphis has a good roster okay they have a great roster free agency is going to have a telltale sign of where the Grizzlies are going to go if they’re in the buying selling or they’re in the contending mode personally I think they’re contending i think they have the pieces to contend for a title now the West is competitive especially the Southwest division katie’s there Wimy’s there um Bane Bane’s in the East so we don’t have to worry about him so the West is so competitive that a lot I can’t even wrap my head around it right now because of course game seven Indiana versus Oklahoma City oklahoma City if they lose tonight or they lose in game seven they’re going to look for re revenge and get back to the finals to win their first ever championship in organization history but and this is a big butt and I cannot lie Memphis is in a weird state right now as much as I’d love to say “Oh Memphis is contending they’re going to be a threat in the playoffs they’re going to be they’re going to be the greatest team in the NBA next season it’s not that right now where it sits unless Memphis makes a big move in free agency they’re looking at a fifth to eight seed right now to me personally now again their cap they have the 10th best cap in the league they are negative 42 million in cap of course Santiama’s a upand cominging free agent this off seasonason luke Canard’s a free agent this offseason they’ve already announced they’re not going to bring him back so that’s one person that’s not going to be in a Grizzlies uniform come opening night um the Santi rumors where it’s going to be a signing trade with Detroit or some other ro some other organization cole Anony’s a potential trade suspect that he’s he can get moved but the the big question is is what does the draft pick mean for Memphis now as I mentioned Washington we have to rely on Washington and they’re negative $92 million in c either 9gative92 or 94 i need to check my math but right now as you’re seeing the Washington roster they don’t have anybody on that team that can push them over 30 wins they don’t have that one guy i mean Jordan P when he’s on he’s on when he’s off he’s off so right now if they win more than 40 games and sneak into that playoff or the playin I would be shocked now the East is the weaker of the two conferences so you can have a losing record and make the playin now is playing considered good possibly not possibly for some for the Wizards I would say it’s a successful season but what the trade pick or not the trade pick but what the draft pick means is that if the Grizzlies hold on to that pick and they and they hold on to a great pick and they get one to five you may be looking at bringing somebody who they’re who they’re comparing to Pablo and that’s Carlos’s Boozer son that’s just committed to Duke which I don’t think the Memphis Grizzlies would draft him let me just make that abundantly clear right now don’t think the Grizzlies would draft him because they have Jiren who’s who’s up for a contract extension and I don’t know if they waste a highv value pick like that on another forward that they when they can get an already established guy cheap in free agency depending on how money looks after this extension so overall aspect of the of the draft pick I need to see where the Grizzlies are at 16 i need to see if any other big moves are made in free agency from Memphis whether Santi gets signed and traded or Luke gets signed and traded if somebody else on the roster gets s gets traded i mean not even signed and trade but if they get traded cole Anthony looking at you pal um Jay Huff I’m looking at you too um John you’re another guy looking at you possibly but overall aspect is this the offseason’s upon us ladies and gentlemen it’s not sink or sweet it’s not sink or swim time for the Grizzlies but I have a fear if the Grizzlies don’t do something big not big they do something good you’re looking at another fifth to eight seeds finish and getting knocked out within the second round of the playoffs i’m just going to be honest if Jaw can’t stay healthy if Jiren can’t stay out of foul trouble and stay healthy that’s your that’s your two that’s your two cornerstone players right there not having a good season if there’s not a decent player picked up who are you going to rely on to score contavius Cwell Pope as well as that is he’s over 30 years old uh Jaden Wells he’s got he’s going to be slow when he comes back i know there’s videos of him on social media where he’s running a while running around wild doing his thing but there’s no telling where his timetable is for return zach Keiti Zacky you won’t have him for the first half of the season or not first half but the first quarter of the season we’ll say so Grizzlies fans buckle up that’s all I can tell you buckle up going to be a wild ride i’m excited for i’ll be here on
