[BREAKING NEWS] Jeanie Buss family shockingly selling Lakers to Mark Walter for $10 billion

we’ve got breaking news out of the NBA where the Los Angeles Lakers will have a new majority owner for the first time since 1979 espn is reporting that the bus family is selling their stake in the Lakers to Mark Walter for a valuation of approximately $10 billion walter is the majority owner of the Dodgers and CEO and chairman of TWG Global he’s been a minority owner of LA since 2021 and also holds a stake in the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks now Dr jerry Boss purchased a team for just $67 and a/ million back in 1979 and has overseen 11 NBA championships in LA while the bus family is selling their majority stake ESPN is reporting that Genie Bus will continue to serve in her role as governor after the sale looking at the largest franchise sales in North American history the Celtics that was $6.1 billion earlier this year the Lakers topping that list $10 billion that is quite the number we have our Avery Johnson and Bill Writer joining us now with this breaking news uh Bill walk us through everything that you know so it’s shocking obviously but I don’t know that it’s that surprising the reality of modern sports in the modern NBA is that mom and pop shops no longer able to function the level they need to in the NBA or even beyond the NBA and this is something that’s been speculated across the league for for a long time i can remember I think here on on HQ maybe a year ago doing one of those prediction shows we throw together sometimes or prediction segment i just throw out in the next whatever it was two three years the Lakers will be sold not because I knew it would happen because inevitably three f years obviously it was quicker than that this was going to happen i I love Junyie Buzz i think most people that have interacted with her think hi of her she’s been an incredible steward of that organization it really turned things around when she took over the organization from her brother but the fact is that it was a lot of stress she didn’t love the limelight and as much as the bus family has a lot of money compared to most people in America they are not generationally wealthy multibillionaires like the new class of owners across sports and so I think this is an inevitable outcome of the fact that these teams are worth billions of dollars in this case $10 billion now I don’t have a lot of details as it relates to how actual control will work whether Genie Bus will actually be involved in the long term didn’t go that way not really with Mark Cubans to the Luka Don trade but it’s certainly a stunning bit of news in LA if not ultimately surprising given just the nature of ownership and how much these teams are worth today from your perspective what do you think prompted the bus family to sell don’t need a money that’s really what it is you know at the end of the day uh some of a lot of these owners get to a point where they feel that they’ve taken the franchise as far as they could take it when Mark Cuban sold the Maverics uh you know it was to a point where hey I don’t want to get involved with you know a new real estate deal i’m not a real estate guy you know the Maveric’s lease ends in 2031 i need to sign I need to sell this team to a family that has deeper pockets and that understand how to build a real estate that obviously wants to uh have a a casino involved so that wasn’t Mark deal so he decided to sell you look at the red skins you know Josh Harris is not just a guy’s personal wealth it’s the corporations dallas Mavers Sand’s corporation behind that ownership deal josh Harris Apollo with the Washington Commanders uh you’re looking at you know $530 billion under assets now you’re looking at this situation with Mr walter who’s coming in from the Gugenheim partners is not his own $6 billion of netwth but it’s the $340 billion of assets that they have under management so a lot of these new groups I agree with Bill you know the mom and pops that’s done a lot of these groups with deeper pockets that can have even more of a you know not a catastrophic but a more comprehensive um meaning and and vision for this franchise to move forward what’s going to happen with the Lakers you look at the Clippers they’re in intuit arena that’s a I heard a majestic arena the most expensive arena uh in the NBA so what’s going to happen with crypto arena and all of the real estate around that you need people with really deep pockets deeper than the bus family to take these franchises to this next level so and that’s exactly what just happened and when we think about the future of the Lakers bill what does that now look like with this new ownership group i mean it’s a question mark in terms look there are this is as A said as I said this is a mom pop shop and a lot of the people that work in this organization from the very top all the way down are are personal friends of the bus family have relationship with the bus family so there are certainly going to be changes the degree to widget is hard to know we you know I think Mark Cuban and the Maverics are such a great example because when Cuban sold that team he was under the impression he would still have control over basketball operations two governors a governor and an alternate governor the reporting out of ESPN is that Genie Bus will remain one of the governors which means decision maker but this is sort of like working for the president you can be Secretary of State and have a lot of power you still work at the behest of the president and you still work in the NBA at the behest of the governor so or of the owner it’s hard to know i will say this this this gentleman who’s buying this team has a track record and every note of this is modern sports now modern sports ownership you have to have someone who has billions of dollars behind them an infrastructure of success and I mean teams now like see Liverpool and the Red Socks by the same owners shouldn’t go down the list this is the guy’s done a hell of a job an amazing job with the Los Angeles Dodgers he he runs a very impressive sports operation so I think in the longterm medium term Dodgers are going to be in really good shape seems like it’s hard to know they’re in very good hands but there are certainly going to be changes to the culture in Los Angeles to how things are running i think maybe it’s a fiveye timeline maybe it’s more quickly there will probably be changes in who is making decisions and maybe even the philosophy of how things run so the bad news if you work for the Lakers today whenever you have a new boss it’s kind of scary this is a I was just texting with someone who works the Lakers this is a scary big change if you’re a Lakers fan I think it’s good news as I said a sale was always inevitable on a you know three to fiveye timeline and I think the good news here for Lakers fans is this team has been sold to someone who has a track regon of success it will be well run it will be well managed even if it’s managed maybe ultimately differently than it has been for decades we see what they this group did with the Dodgers this offseason just creating such a superstar team throwing money around that that we’ve never seen before and when you think about the Lakers you think about LeBron James so Avery what does this mean for the future of LeBron do you think that this gives any clarity to what he’s going to do next well I think this really gives LeBron James an opportunity especially as a businessman to partner with a group that just have unlimited resources uh the very uh capital wealth well position so this gives LeBron James especially someone who’s been talked about uh that wants to be an NBA owner at some point in his career so this will give LeBron James confidence that he can play as long as he wants to play as long as he’s healthy and he has an ownership group that have you know the the pockets and the cash and the balance sheet within the rules to uh to pay him and I just think again going back to another point I made when you look at if it’s not these big corporate conglomerates uh you got to have a family you had on your list at the Denver Broncos who’s the leading who’s the lead owner that bought the Denver Broncos Rob Walton who runs it his daughter Carry Pinter and her husband Greg Pinter Won family how much Rob Won work billion so again this is a new time and really if I’m some of these smaller market teams in the NBA that I’m watching these sales with Boston and the Lakers and I’m looking at who’s knocking on my door because uh some of these small
