basketball Monday through Friday and live after all the games and whenever news breaks as well matt Koulski is the co-host today formerly 957 the game in the Bay Area that’s the flagship station of the Golden State Warriors worked for K&BR as well my name Charlie Walter i joined Kolski at 957 the game and also had a stint in television for CBS News Bay Area call letters out there in San Francisco are KPIX today the menu is pretty simple it’s Oklahoma City the NBA champions it’s Kevin Durant heading to the Houston Rockets and it’s how do those two things affect the Golden State Warriors moving forward first of all Kolski welcome to the off season man it’s about to pick up here it’s been pretty slow with some hypotheticals we’ve been getting into Brook Lopez maybe Giannis and now real things happen with the draft coming up on Wednesday what’s up man how we doing yeah I mean I don’t know how real the draft will be for the Warriors in terms of uh personnel that affects the upcoming season but at least it’s stuff happening right and for the beginning of the off season the last 48 hours have been packed with action NBA wise so plenty to talk about for us let’s start with Kevin Durant it’s the biggest news i mean it’s it’s not the biggest news technically the the NBA championship is the biggest news right but in terms of us a former Warrior a two-time NBA champion with the Golden State Warriors and Kevin Durant um this this is big- time news by the way today’s episode’s brought to you by Monarch Money take control your finances with Monarch Money use code locked on NBA at monarchmoney.com and you’ll get 50% off your first year kevin Durant is getting paid a whole bunch of money no longer by the Phoenix Suns now by the Houston Rockets here is how the deal went down first of all since leaving the Warriors Durant has won two playoff series he’s been traded three times and he’s played for seven head coaches but Houston needed a half court scoreer they desperately needed someone that could put the ball in the hole aside from Fred Ban Fleet and Jaylen Green every other day or whatever it was that Jaylen Green was was stepping up right not consistent they didn’t One out of seven I believe was the actual result rate for Jaylen Green yeah yeah 57 true um Jaylen or Dylan Brooks they they technically didn’t need him right like you can let Tar Een fill that role they got so many junkyard dogs on that team you got uh you got him in Thompson you have athletes you have defenders you have spark plugs you needed scores so in that role or in that trade Dylan Brooks will go to Phoenix jaylen Green a former top five pick and someone that averaged 20 points per game this season 21 to be exact will head to the Phoenix Suns as will the 10th pick in five second rounders so to recap five second rounders this year’s 10th overall pick Dylan Brooks and Jaylen Green who wins this trade or is it even on both sides it’s a wash uh the the Rockets are killing them um I would argue nobody needs Dylan Brooks not just the Rockets but in fact no team needs Dylan Brooks show me a team with Dylan Brooks I’ll show you how they’d be better if they traded him um also I find it fascinating that the Sun’s apparent strategy is to surround Devin Booker by all accounts a lovely you know franchise centerpiece and a heck of a player with a bunch of overpaid guys that play his position um so I I don’t think we even need to talk about the Suns i don’t know what they’re doing uh but until they can figure out how to unload Bradley Beal and his no trade clause they’re they’re not really worth getting into um the Rockets they’re about to be nice man they’re about I mean let’s just be totally honest about this the Warriors beat the Rockets in the playoffs okay if they have Kevin Durant instead of Dylan Brooks who I think was probably a net negative at best break even for them in that series and Jaylen Green who other than the one big game 38 in that one big game yeah but he was terrible otherwise other than that I think he averaged single digits y uh so you know one great game versus what Kevin Durant can do and think of how many times in that series the Warriors won a game or made a run because they put the clamps on Houston and and nobody on the Rockets could get off a good shot well that’s not the case anymore because whatever you think about Kevin Durant whatever you want to say about the trades and the lack of playoff series victories he has never stopped being one of the absolute elite half court scorers of all time period full stop so it’s exactly what they needed and they get to keep most of the assets they have including Phoenix’s future picks which you know I I would take Phoenix probably over Utah right now maybe over Portland but nobody else in the West okay never mind in the West in the West uh you know New Orleans they’re in the they’re in that boat with New Orleans and Portland to me right now and that means their draft pick is going to be a good one next year when Houston might like a little more young talent they kept Jabari Smith in the deal which to me is huge and if I was Phoenix I would have been demanding that guy forget Jaylen i mean you need to use Green to make the money work but Shenon should have been the centerpiece not Jaylen Green no there was no chance of that there’s no chance of that shen sorry i I love Kevin Durant and I just told you why this is a great deal for the Rockets but Shangon is just more valuable as an asset right now especially with the contract situation a lot of money uncertainty youth all so many things about it right but what the Rockets did here is give up very little that matters to them right now in exchange for someone that can make a huge difference for them right now and where last year I think everybody believed going into the playoffs and it kind of turned out going when we got there that look the Rockets are an exciting young team with a ton of talent but they’re not really playoff ready as a number two seed yet i think with Kevin Durant you know you’re actually even less worried about the seeding and you feel much better about what you’re able to do once you get to the playoffs so I think it’s an absolute home run for the Rockets and frankly bad news for the Warriors because as it stands today I’m not sure I picked them to beat the Rockets you know obviously we got to see it obviously there’s a long off seasonason that still has to play out we don’t know what’s going on with Kaminga but as it stands today i just watched these two teams play they were pretty close and one of them just got a lot better so that’s that’s that’s tough it it continues to set the bar incredibly high for the Golden State Warriors gonna tie a ribbon on the the Kevin Durant to Golden State Warriors talks it’s it’s probably over at this point i Yep good night i think it’s safe to say that that one’s not going to happen this reunion that for some reason I in the back of my head I thought you know there’s a chance that Kevin Durant could return to the Warriors and a few months ago it looked likely at a certain point and Durant said no and he is heading back to Houston remember he played his collegiate basketball for the Texas Longhorns so a little Lonear State reunion we’ll talk some more Durant how this affects the Warriors and Oklahoma City the champs do we put an asterisk next to that championship probably not realistically but they had some things go their way we’re going to talk about that coming up on Locked on Warriors destroy Jimmy and Domino i know Jimmy drinks great wine ollipop is a new kind of soda it’s made for people who love the classic taste of soda but want something that supports their health it’s got just two to five grams of sugar and nine grams of prebiotic fiber in every can that’s why Lollipop is reimagining soda in a way that’s better for your gut 39 grams and a Coke and 44 gram of sugar and an orange Fanta lollipop just flips that script it’s actually good for your body and good for your gut and they got great flavors cherry Cola Classic Grape or maybe even Dr goodwin their Dr pepper dupe my favorite personally is their cream soda but you can get as crazy as you want with it they got banana cream and just about anything you you can think of at this point you know those scientists those flavor scientists are in the lab right now cooking up some other stuff get a free can of Lollipop just buy any two cans in store and they’ll reimburse you for one head to drinkllipop.com/lockedonba to claim your free can and findop near you it’s drinkallipop.comlockdon nba all right man so you were shaking your head uh pretty vigorously when I asked you if there’s any sort of an asterisk next to this NBA championship obviously the Thunder one of the top 10 best seasons regular seasons I should say in NBA history by the time it was all said and done they had one of the most winning seasons obviously the Warriors hold that record for a team that did not win the championship but one of the most winningest teams in NBA history along the way they beat a Memphis team that saw John Moran go down they were winning that series regardless let’s get real denver they won with a injured Michael Porter Jr and then Aaron Gordon suffering that hamstring injury right before game seven and he was not the same but nevertheless they won that series and they handled adversity at the same time coming back this series right here and then they they they skipped out on Steph right they saw Minnesota instead of Steph Curry and the Warriors you can make that debate whether the Wolves would have won that series anyway but this series right here is the one that’s interesting because this was a ball game i mean it was a ball game the entire first half tyrese Hallebertton goes down uh you know best wishes to to that young man hopefully he can come back from that Achilles injury stronger than ever but it turned into TJ McConnell from there tj McConnell Tyresese Hallebertton i mean good for the Thunder they got the job done and won it all but uh they they definitely had a few things break their way in the process nonetheless a really good team uh winning their first ever NBA championship generally I reject the idea of asterisks on championships um if I was ever going to consider it it would be for something like the bubble much more so than injuries injuries happen also like Tyus Hallebertton’s great and there is no question that Indiana’s offense in the second half suffered desperately for his absence but the Thunder defense has also been one of the best of all time and has put the clamps on him more than once in this series so it’s not as though like I look at Toronto and I’m not putting an asterisk on that championship but I will say out loud if Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson are healthy the Warriors beat the stuffing out of the Raptors and I’m not I don’t doubt that for a second this is not like that sure I think it would be insane to not say Indiana had a puncher chance right if Hallebertton’s there without him there you felt less that way but man it’s still when they’re making a run to within single digits in the fourth quarter I’m thinking “Holy hell are they going to do this again?” You know uh you can’t help yourself that hits the gamewinning ele ignore the possibility but Hallebertton or no Hallebertton I would have favored the Thunder to do what they did in the second half which is have a run where their defense was at such a high level that there was just nothing the Pacers could do and I think you know on one hand right no asterisk on the other hand you just laid out a perfect case for why the Warriors should be able to put together a team that can summon belief that a another title run is possible because the team that won the title that for the regular season put up numbers to look like one of the greatest teams of all time but they had everything they wanted challenge-wise to try to get this thing done and you can make a reasonable argument in your head for an alternate universe where the Nuggets the Warriors the maybe not the T-Wolves given the way that series went but certainly the Pacers all win this title right i I mean the Thunder were the best team all year long and they are deserving and valid champions to me that do not have an asterisk but if I’m a team like the Warriors and I know I’m I’m at least swimming in the same pool as these guys like I’m doing everything I can to put a team on the floor that I think can compete in a series like the one we just saw and I don’t think that’s outside the realm of possibility espn just came out with like their top 30 they’re way too early top 30 teams entering next season what a what a ridiculous article in power rankings to put out there but it gets the clicks and it gets us to talk about it thunder obviously won guess what the Warriors were uh okay this is both conferences yes sir i’ll give you a hint two were two was the Wolves shocking okay hold on hold on let me let me just count out some teams that I think ESPN would put ahead of the Warriors i think we’re going to have the uh let’s start in the west the Nuggets you had you just had the Wolves they’re de I think the Rockets is this post Kevin Durant trade then I think the Rockets will be ahead of the Warriors so that’s three um plus the Thunder obviously so that bumps them down to around five the Pacers are obviously not in this because Hallebertton God is there any East team maybe well not ahead of the Warriors they’re ahead of the Warriors well they must not be accounting for the Hallebertton injury then that’s silly uh I’m going to say the Warriors are like eight hey right on the nose how about that man you got to It’s time for the Price is Right matt Koulsky get on there you got maybe a lottery ticket today that’s good stuff that’s weird like Indie clearly without Tyrese Hallebertton doesn’t belong above the Warriors so let’s call it seven who are the six teams we we got Denver OKC Minnesota uh Houston Cleveland Cle of course Cleveland Indie New York Indie and they did put the Knicks ahead of them they got Lakers Clippers 910 Pistons 11 Celtics 12 Magic 13 Mavericks 14 Grizzlies 15 right okay now so here’s the thing i don’t know how much that’s factoring in Cooper Flag and whatever he’s going to be for the Mavericks although I guess they’re entering the season without Kyrie too so they’ve got issues but uh I don’t know how much that’s factoring in anything that the Spurs might do this off seasonason whether it’s drafting Dylan Harper and putting him with Wemby and and Fox or whether that’s some kind of trade we can assume it’s factoring in the Kevin Durant thing but that’s obviously like it’s great to have those rankings and I would not be insulted if I’m the Warriors at number eight but like how many moves do Luca LeBron and the Lakers have to make like what kind of move would change that and flip the where the Warriors and Lakers are right now same thing for the Clippers and and the Warriors like yeah there’s question marks there you know is James Harden going to be back at what price what do they do around those two guys at the center of the roster same thing with the Lakers like is Austin Reeves the number three or is he someone you’re using to add another higher level player to this team right now that there’s so much to be decided that I almost think from certainly number three if not I’m assuming they have uh Thunder Rockets one two is that not what you said Timberwolves are two so are Rockets three it’s uh it’s Thunder Wolves nuggets Cavs then Rockets okay so if we’re just thinking about the West I don’t know that the Nuggets have a clear edge on the Warriors just based on you know they’re also going to be a year older i’m not sure that Michael Porter Jr is going to still be there you know what is Jamal Murray really is he finally going to put together season new coach all that stuff i like I’m not saying the Warriors are better than the Nuggets but I just think there’s this big like pot of pretty darn good basketball teams with elite players at the top and some question marks elsewhere on the roster and to me this is a GM’s off seasonason man yeah there’s a lot of space to to win this thing on the margins at least underneath the Thunder and and you know depending on what you think of the Durant move maybe the Rockets have elevated themselves out of that group but certainly if we put the Rockets in the group I would say it’s Rockets Warriors uh Nuggets Wolves maybe Spurs depending on what they decide to do if they stay totally young and just draft Dylan Harper and try to develop maybe they’re not quite in that group but man they’re coming and WBY is like everybody should be afraid if Dylan Harper can help right away like maybe is a sort of overlapping with Fox but that you know they got Stfan Castle coming up they got on him dude this that team people don’t sleep on the Spurs at all i I think they might even be in that i’m talking myself into it right now right they were like 17th on that list by the way yeah and maybe the Grizzlies are not in that group right now but they also have a lot of assets after that Desmond Bane trade so who knows what that will look like like I I foresee once again from where I sit today and obviously this can change a lot as we’re saying i foresee once again spots two through 11 being disturbingly close in the Western Conference and that generally means it’s marginal moves that can win the day like it’s marginal stuff that got Houston the number two seed and the Warriors the number seven going into the the playoffs this year you know one weird loss or win each way changes the entire structure of the Western Conference playoffs so it’s just it doesn’t look to be any different heading into next year um and and even though the Thunder have stood above that and based on dude it’s nuts everyone’s under contract they have more draft assets than anyone in the league all of their players with the possible exception of Alex Caruso are ascending it’s scary but the Pacers were right there you know there’s no reason not to believe you can get it done especially and and here’s where I get really encouraged all right this is my galaxy brain stuff watching this finals what are the things obviously pace is one of the things but what are the things generally that that made the Pacers compete better than any of us thought they would a lot of it to me is depth right just it’s depth but it’s not depth of like names people cared about before six weeks ago no it’s Obie Topphen it’s finding guys who fit and finding guys that are ready to give it all and sacrifice and it’s having a very distinct style built around a singular player like all of these things describe the Warriors it’s playing really good defense when it matters it’s moving the ball really well and it’s getting some outsized performances from guys that again nobody around the country really cared about six or eight weeks ago and for the Warriors it remains to be seen who those guys are is it Kaminga and Moody and Pajki and Buddy Heield and that’s what you’re counting on or are there moves that get made and it’s a different collection of veterans or whoever and that to me is going to be how we’re going to judge this off seasonason both as it’s happening and looking back on it later is it’s not so much can they upgrade the talent talent-wise they’re in the mix with most of the West and nobody’s catching OKC it’s getting blue guy yeah stylewise can they you know they’re can Yeah sure badier whatever can they gel in a way that makes them significantly more than the sum of their parts and and we’ve seen them do that before and win championships because of it on at least two occasions so I am never going to rule that out as long as Steph Curry is walking the earth um but I do think there is work to be done for me to to see a vision that makes that possible and whether that work is just changing approach and giving more rope to guys like Kaminga and Moody I don’t know whether it’s turning them into something whether it’s waiting until the December or January time to turn them into I don’t know but I do not think that’s where the Warriors are today i think today they have the centerpieces and general asset level to compete but not the right pieces philosophically to head into next season and I’m very interested to see what the next couple months hold the good news is NBA draft on Wednesday not likely that you find someone that’s going to step in right away on the 25th of June at the 41st pick and be someone that you know from day one’s a stud but hey we said it on the last show nicole Joic man he went 41 so crazier things have happened on this earth and there are some good players in this draft i mean someone like Janai Broom who is just a a stud in college could potentially be there at 41 we’ll see if he translates to the NBA we’ll see if the Warriors are interested in him well I will say on that topic Chuck like this is important the the way the draft has gone over the last decade benefits the Warriors in this situation because while yes the the prospects with the highest ceilings the guys everyone’s excited about are going to go early and and more generally in the first round the way that age has turned into a negative for guys and and college experience is maybe not valued the way it once was means that although there are players with with a probably lower ceiling and lesser future available at that point there may very well be someone who can step in and provide something distinct and valuable for the Warriors so that that will be interesting to watch on the other hand like they might just pick someone who you know they send to the G-League for a year and and don’t really think about again you know it’s hard to say that being said what was Quenton Post last year he’s in the 50s right 52 maybe yeah yeah and they’re they’re projected right now by ESPN to take a 7-3 center from Brisbane named Rockco Zakarsski that would be exactly what you said uh stash him in the G-League 73 got a lot of size but he’s not someone that’s going to step in right away so nobody knows nobody knows espn doesn’t know i promise you that no they don’t even they don’t even know more than us about the Golden State Warriors i promise you that we’re going to continue this conversation the Warriors going to be looking in the off season to improve this team let’s go back to Phoenix do the Suns now have anything after this trade that the Golden State Warriors would want we’ll discuss that coming up on Locked on Warriors forget that we champs why you starting with that question we got four championships ever check your bank account and wonder that’s monarchoney.com code locked on NBA for half off your first year phoenix all of a sudden’s pretty fascinating kolski pretty interesting team to reach out to and the crazy thing is I really like Bradley Beal as a player you know don’t love him but I really like him as a player i mean he he could put the ball in the basket he’s been a really serviceable I mean beyond serviceable an all-NBA guy back in the day averaged 30 points per game at one point granted with the Wizards but you don’t score 30 on accident i like Beal i just hate his contract and every team in the NBA hates his contract it’s untouchable 53 million next year then a player option that he would be a not to tap into that’s worth 57 million if he was like 25 million I’d say sign me up for Bradley Beal but he’s not so he’s not an option uh Jaylen Green’s 23 averaged 21 four and a half rebounds and three and a half assists i I would think that he is a part of that team moving forward and then Devin Booker you would have to believe is the centerpiece he’s also someone that I do believe Kerr would love to have in the Bay Area um I I think there was kind of a connection between those two in the Olympics and Booker just just seems like a Warriors guy a culture guy but again I don’t think Ishbian company is trading him although with all the draft picks that the Warriors have if they really wanted to blow this thing up they could be interesting there grayson Allen I know you’re going to shake your head no but he has his moments um and and yes Kolski is shaking his head no for those of you on the audio podcast platform but the way that Phoenix is now currently constructed does this trade change your mind about them being a potential partner for something in the offseason or the deadline not really the every single person you just discussed with one exception is a total loser that I wouldn’t want on my team uh and I say that with the utmost respect that’s a little harsh for Jaylen Green who’s a young guy and and I’ll give him a little rope bradley Beal doesn’t want to play winning basketball he has zero interest in anything other than lacing up his shoes and cashing his checks i I have no interest in a player like that if you’re going to tell me that Steve Kerr is willing to accept the flaws of Grayson Allen more than the flaws of Jonathan Kaminga I’m going to tell you that is a person that doesn’t deserve to be coaching in the NBA and I don’t believe that’s the case i can’t imagine that the Warriors would accept the flaws in the same way that I can’t imagine they would trade for Dylan Brooks only reason I brought up and if they did I’d be deeply troubled yeah only reason I brought up that name dunley v Duke guy allen Duke guy i mean when it’s a Duke guy you always got to wonder about the brotherhood but man that guy is such a piece of garbage and like there are very few guys in the NBA that I would say that about like even Beal I kind of respect it man if if if your priorities are like having cash and living comfortably and you did it do you yeah right but I don’t want that guy on my team especially not for $53 million has he ever had a chance though to really be on a a contender i mean it was him and Wall early that that kind of had you know a future but they never put it together with injuries and stuff but has he ever been in I’m not saying he I’m not saying Bradley Beal refuses to play winning ball or is necessarily incapable i’m saying it does not seem to be a priority for him no and and and the money makes it impossible right to change and I if I’m the Warriors I’m trying to add guys that are desperate to win right now the same way that Draymond Green and Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler are desperate to win right now okay and again I feel more comfortable trying to get that out of Jonathan Kaminga than any of the names you just described with the obvious exception of Devin Booker the only way Devin Booker gets traded is if he demands it and even then I think the only way he gets to the Warriors is if he specifically demands to be traded to the Warriors now Steve Kerr and he did seem to have a great relationship and I will tell you that my impression is that Steve Kerr loves Deon Booker for exactly the reasons he does not love Jonathan Kaminga which is that Deon Booker who is an established superstar and does have that level of talent came into the Olympic team and played like a glue guy and absolutely kicked ass so that’s great but we’re a long way from Devin Booker requesting a trade at all and even further from him demanding to be sent to the Warriors so I don’t know that that’s worth considering nobody else there is of any interest to me if we’re talking about hey you know second round pick for Royce O’Neal I have no idea what his contract is but that you know somebody like that could be interesting I suppose on the fringes that’s not the sort of move that that makes waves and look in order to get Booker you’d have to do weird things financially i don’t know how it would work maybe there’s some sort of Kaminga deal if he again did demand to be traded specifically to the Warriors but I you know I don’t want to go too far down that road i don’t think anybody at Devin Booker’s level is going to be available to the Warriors this off seasonason unfortunately all right tell me this um last 30 seconds of the show last 30 seconds that I probably am going to talk to you before the NBA draft unless you want to do some some graph draft coverage that night i mean it’s up to you i’d rather go postdraft because to be honest like I don’t I I’ve I’ve done a little bit of work on on the top 20 or whatever but I don’t really know these guys and you know you know these guys about as much as Mel Kyper knows these guys wrong sport right exactly yeah yeah so I I have less to offer before the draft more to offer after we see what people do and really more to the point is there something on draft night that that gets done with non rookie players right are there moves that get made outside of You have an official pick though this is your last chance to give one i’m going to go I think they’re going to take Sean James from Duke i’m going to go with that as their pick oh no i don’t have I I have no concept of the uh actual value or or anything when it comes to pick number 41 pop in the comments 1. I think actually the Rockets are easier for the Warriors than last year. Yes, Houston looks better offensively with KD, but the Rockets offense taking a step forward can be matched by the Warriors offense. That defense was what almost beat GS. That young, energetic, buzzsaw defense pestered Steph, beat up Butler and made them work for every single possession. I would say that was the best defense the Warriors have played in the playoffs for the past 10 years. The Warriors made it past Houston, but they had to use so much energy, and was absolutely spent in the 2nd round, leading to Stephs injury, and ultimately losing to the Wolves. Losing a young energetic wing in Green, and a menace in Dillon Brooks, for an old KD is a win in my books. Theres no way 37 year old KD can go thru a whole season and a full playoffs. He is too old now.

  2. If Bradley Beal gets bought out which has been reported as a likely possibility, would Warriors be interested if he took far less?

  3. When are you guys going to realize the Dubs window is closed. Enjoy the Steph farewell tour because we have zero shot to in anything anymore.

  4. Great trade by Houston!! However…they're saddled with KDs contract. Hey maybe the Suns are blowing things up and want youth and picks and salary options. Enter, the Ws: Kuminga and POds and some picks for Devin Booker. P.s. no one offered a better deal for Durant. There has to be a reason: his age and his contract. No team wants to pay a ton to bring up an aging superstar with a huge contract. That formula doesn't work anymore. No one wanted Kd enough to pay for his actual BB value. KD is an injury waiting to happen that hamstrings, so to speak, a team's ability to sign other competent players.

  5. Dubs are done, they are going to be either a second round team or if they are lucky with matchups they might peak at western conference game for the next 2 years. Unless they upgrade dreymond to yanis. We need to trade butler to Memphis for the picks they got for bane or trade butler to phoenix for jaylen green and Dillon brooks and three 2nds and phoenix late 1st round pick
