an episode drops and demich it’s good to have you back you’re you’re coming in hot which i appreciate you’ve got some draft workout intel some of which you shared on social media already but some of which is new to our listeners here uh what are you hearing about what the grizzlies are looking for maybe even dropped some names of guys that have come through memphis in the leadup to the nba draft yeah we’ve talked about you know uh this this process uh one thing that’s kind of you know been told to me is the fact that the grizzlies are they want defensive-minded guys right and i’m of the opinion that the wing is the preference uh that isn’t really intelbased but i just feel like based on what we know about this roster you know the fact that they have you know two guys and zack edy and brandon clark as of right now who are expected to play the majority of the minutes at center and when those guys aren’t playing the minutes you’re probably going to see jiren jackson jr at the five you got guys like jiren jackson jr who’s going to play a lot of minutes at the four and if santi alamo as of right now i’m still predicting santi alama to be back with the grizzlies so if you still have him then that’s a lot of more minutes at the four so you’re talking about four guys at power forward and center who are going to occupy the most of those minutes and then you get to the back court similar situation as well in terms of john morant you know jaylen wells and and you add in scotty pippen jr to that equation we’ll see you know kind of what happens with cole anthony talk about him a little bit more uh in the next segment but um i think that’s kind of that that all leads me back to the wing and uh they’ve actually been bringing in you know they’re doing their work you know um when i when i talk to people uh about what’s next for the grizzlies in terms of you know the big picture right and and you you talk about the idea that they’re not trying to rebuild they want to retool and to me if you’re talking about retooling uh that means you’re looking for older prospects and then at the same time when you factor in the fact that the grizzlies didn’t get a first round pick until roughly what a week or so ago uh i mean it hasn’t been that long so what i heard is that the grizzlies didn’t just all of a sudden like all right we got to scout first round guys of course they were probably scouting other guys more but you know the scouting process is a year-long thing right you and the grizzlies did have you know a first round pick at least they thought they would uh until they they moved off of marcus smart in february and even then as it got uh towards you know the end of the regular season so we were talking about unlocked on grizzlies there was a chance that they would keep that pick so they’ve still done their due diligence on potential first round picks uh you mentioned the names that that i recently put out there uh and and of those names uh newell from georgia the big was the one guy who’s projected to go somewhere in that lottery range um you know he he’s an interesting prospect uh i i i think you know coming from georgia one and done put up some really good numbers in the sec which is always a a strong case of a really good player interestingly not necessarily good defensive numbers though part not not not good defensive numbers which is i was going to get to the point that when you talk about him i don’t i don’t know if he’s a great fit necessarily for memphis but but he is someone they’ve brought in and uh you know there are a couple names earl timberlake you know some tigers fans may remember he spent one year at memphis end up transferring but had a really strong year at bryant jal telford over at butler jordan gaining ut v a six-man last couple years uh so those are more probably your fringe second round in the draft like guys that probably won’t be drafted so that’s just you you know bringing in some guys let’s see if we can find some diamond roughs maybe uh with that being the case but i’ll also add this um they’ve also reportedly you know nick clifford and cedric coward who are two of the favorites for the number 16 pick so they’ve been in the building reportedly oo that’s good intel there partner both two names that we’ve said numerous times on this here podcast cedric coward and nick clifford i would like both of those guys right and i’ve already planted my flag on coward island but it seems more and more likely that that’s a guy i don’t see how he falls past okc or san antonio late there in the lottery unless there’s some sort of trade you know coward at 14 again tankathon.com is my personal favorite that’s where they currently have coward going is to the spurs at 14 but then you have thomas sorber at 15 to the thunder another big uh that you maybe check some boxes then has the grizzlies taking nick clifford at 16 overall and he would check the box of a guy a senior 23 years old coming in ready to work it’s intriguing that he’s been in the building that could be a guy that makes a lot of sense for memphis given their current situation you mentioned tankathon and and it’s funny because uh draft express espn’s uh mock draft had the grizzlies getting cedric coward which is you know a guy me and you both are are really high on but uh nick clifford uh those two guys are are like the guys that most people in the in the grizzlies lord the fan base at least uh really like the most but let’s say let’s go with your strategy of coward being off the board uh nick clifford is is another guy see me he’s roughly 6’5 like i think he’s a little bit smaller uh so it’s a it would be a situation where i think um he’s more likely to play the two and jaylen wells would have to stick at the three which and i feel like lately the grizzlies are more likely like they want to get a three uh if that makes sense so jaylen wells could move over to the two so again but that’s stuff you don’t worry about right now you you draft your best players and you figure that stuff out later but uh yeah nick clifford five-year college player so he checks the box right of a guy who spent a lot of time in college uh spent his last two years at colorado state which um if if if we know that that’s where the grizzlies most recently i believe it was 2022 drafted a player in the first round out of colorado state uh in david rody and uh it didn’t really turn out great he’s already not playing in memphis anymore so uh nate clifford interesting prospect seems like kind of a safer on the safer end he really rebounds the ball up talking to jay bilis about him and jay bis says he think he’s i think the best rebounding guard in the draft or something like that so uh look i think if you come away with either one of those guys it’s really impressive but uh yeah i i hadn’t heard much about how they fared in the workout whether that be nick clifford or um you know cedric coward in that case but the fact that you know memphis has the interest in those two enough to say let’s get them in here and let’s let’s see what they bring to the table in person especially in that short window like again the the trade for desmond bane was not i mean trading away desmond bane did not happen long ago but the grizzlies uh i mean they jumped right on it they’ve been aggressive and and we’ll see overall what they end up doing with that pick the only way you could have made me happier partner is if you also name drop some guys like your boy rasher fleming from st joe’s my boy danny wolf from michigan again not saying that either of those guys i think fleming is a better fit for the roster at this point than wolf is uh but i i got i got you convinced with him i like that i like that you sold me i was already kind of flirting with him a little bit but i took the plunge uh he’s my 1b to coward’s 1a i think he makes a lot of sense and maybe we talk more tomorrow about this growing market for santi alama you know if these reports are true and there’s so many teams vying for his services you know maybe he’s not long for this memphis life and we’ll see how that all plays out here in the next 48 to 72 hours because a sign and trade that is officially possible now right they can at least negotiate the sign and trade literally uh right now i think it can’t be till july 1st that it actually happens um but negotiations and that sort of thing you would know more about that than me let the michael and i know in the comments hit us up on x at the michael c at joe molenx how are you feeling about these names that have been dropped both clifford and coward have been in memphis per memphis grizzlies beatriter for the commercial appeal to michael cole i knew you would have something for us there partner i appreciate that when we come back here on lockdown grizzlies i talked about it on yesterday’s show diamonds in the rough fleming was one of the guys i brought up what if memphis decides to trade this thing what could that possibly look like stick around here on lockdown grizzlies today’s episode of lockdown grizzlies is brought to you by monarch money have you ever checked here and to quote myself are you trying to win a championship or not not zack kimman has come out and said that the team is far away from that just how far away they are we’ll maybe talk about to close out the show reflecting on a pretty significant nba finals uh the oklahoma city thunder now champions the grizzlies are far away from the thunder i don’t think anybody disagrees with that however trading the number 16 pick is probably not going to get you that much closer unless it’s a part of a much larger deal so in my mind a trade with number 16 could literally go in a variety of ways maybe they are smitten with our boy coward and they want to trade up in front of san antonio in oklahoma city because they’re worried that that guy is going to be off the table maybe they talk to the hawks maybe they talk to the bulls and try to move up into that late lottery mix that especially makes sense with atlanta because of the draft so maybe the grizzlies could move up maybe the grizzlies could move back and accumulate additional assets for more flexibility down the road as they retool the roster as you talked about or maybe they include it as part of a larger deal i know you and i before the show we reminded one another of how jimmy once upon a time was the betting favorite to go to memphis that clearly didn’t happen bam abio for some reason is a favorite in betting markets a second most likely uh player after the lakers the lakers make too much sense for a variety of reasons but after the lakers it was the grizzlies in the mix for bam out of bio according to uh a betting market i’ll look up the name while you’re chiming in here partner i was very thank you partner i appreciate that so bavado had bam at number two to the grizzlies in terms of likeliest trade or most likely to bet on trade destinations 16 would almost certainly be a part of a trade that involves an alldefense all nba tweener big like bamabio and then some right lots of other things beyond that so one of the fascinating things about this nba draft for the grizzlies and one of the reasons that you’re probably not going to get very much sleep the next few days is they could literally go any which way and i think 16 is a solid little fulcrum point that’s what makes it exciting though we don’t know what the heck they’re going to do wednesday night at least not right now this is one of the most unpredictable drafts the grizzlies have had in some time yeah uh and i’ll agree with you and i don’t know if this is what the way you were trying to say that too when you say they’ll go any way uh they could trade it they could trade up they could trade back or they could potentially you know trade it for a player uh all of those seem like realistic possibilities uh so that’s kind of u you know what i’m thinking too i i think you know in this case uh trading the pick still like if if you get a favorable offer that has to be the route for me now at the end of the day um you know when you talk about just financial flexibility and things like that getting a really good player and a cheap contract at number 16 and it actually working out uh would be a really big deal but at the same time you know you’re talking about best case scenario you get you know a jaylen williams year three version of him and uh that’s three years from now and that’s when what job would be going into the final year of his current contract or something like that so you know i mean i just think there are quicker routes uh to to seeing what this uh you know this team could look like in the future and now maybe maybe that is the way that the grizzlies will go but uh but yeah i i’m looking at it as like okay let’s see what’s out there in in the trade market if we could move the pick maybe add a player or so um i mentioned the names earlier you know um there is also the possibility that you could still open up cap space uh more cap space right now we’ve seen the estimates being roughly you know a little bit more than four million under five million uh in cap room to kind of uh put on jiren jackson jr.’s contract to put yourself in a position to renegotiate uh his deal because if you if you’re unable to get a renegotiation and extension done with jiren then that that changes a lot because now you’re going into the off season uh next off season uh facing the idea that he could leave he could just walk for a massive contract elsewhere and he’ll get the offers so it won’t be a question about that more than likely um with that being said i i think the idea of trading this pick still is what i’m enamored with the most uh look if nick clifford and rasheed fleming and cedric coward like whoever the grizzly say that’s our a guy if you’re a guy is there um i mean you you do with that what you will but also is there’s a a opportunity to go get you know i think an experienced swing i don’t really care for going to get a big with the 16th pick i don’t really care for going to yet another guard uh with the 16 pick unless is a guard um who’s probably a little bit bigger guard you know could play the two and then you’d have to play jaylen wells at the three but again from what i can tell they want to have jaylen wells as a as a as as a two guard and um you know that would put you in position to go get another experienced three there are some guys on the roster who still you know if if they turn out right you know they they could fill that role but we’re not we’re too many ifs too many ifs we’re in a position where you need to go get something uh that can really move the needle and the number 16 pick a rookie unless he has the greatest unless he we’re talking about a magic johnson type rookie season uh it’s it’s you won’t really see the long you’ll see the long-term benefits but you won’t see the short-term benefits uh immediately so i’m i’m out there you know joe i’m i’m i’m looking around i’m trying to see hey who who could we get for the number 16 pick but at the same time you want to match salaries in that deal or at least give yourself a little bit more flexibility because this is another situation that could indirectly impact the jiren jackson jr situation we talked about how right now uh the grizzlies went from having roughly close to 7 million in cap space where they could have added on to the jiren jackson deal to now you’re roughly at about a little bit under five million the four million range so uh you technically have a less leeway there to get that uh renegotiation uh contract done with jiren jackson jr so i’m thinking okay yeah let’s let’s trade for an nba player let’s go get someone who’s proven but at the same time it has to make sense in terms of not impacting the renegotiation extension too much so with all that factored in the most realistic thing to happen to me here would be the grizzlies staying at 16 going to get a player that they really feel like can make an impact from year one and potentially a great impact by year three i am intrigued by names like the milwaukee bucks the boston celtics sadly and we’ll talk more about this here in a moment sadly the indiana pacers right teams that are looking at pretty difficult seasons ahead or are thinking in the case of the pacers in particular you know we need a point guard for the season you know somebody like a cole anthony who’s right there on the grizzlies roster and correct me if i’m wrong again you’re more familiar with these rules than me as long as anthony is not traded alongside other players he can be moved wednesday night am i wrong about that i i believe that is correct i’m i’m not 100% believe it just can’t be he can’t be combining salary exactly exactly yep yep yep that’s the way yep that’s exactly what it is so in theory the indiana pacers could call up the memphis grizzlies and be like “hey aaron neith is here he he’s kind of cool cole anthony and number 16 for nith how you feeling?” i make that deal immediately immediately i’m not saying indiana does i’m just giving a hypothetical but if if the pacers say we need somebody to get us through this upcoming stretch without hallebertton cole anthony might be the best we can do there’s a 16th pick there that we can add additional depth do with what we want and you can bring in as the grizzlies a competitive wing like nmith that would be interesting to me that’s just one example though look for teams like those three in the eastern conference that have suffered injuries look for teams like the wizards that likely will not be good the jazz continue to not be good look for those kinds of squads find wings that fit in the 6 to12 million salary range and those should be the targets moving forward and i’m sure we’ll talk more about that here in the next couple of days here on lockdown grizzlies again hit us up on x at the michael cj mullenex let us know in the comments how would you use the number 16 pick in the upcoming draft when we come back on this episode we will finish up reflecting on the nba finals that was a really impressive series two small markets doing basketball the right way we’ll talk about what it all means for the grizzlies now that the season is officially over stick around here on lockdown grizzlies today’s episode of lockdown grizzlies is brought to you by fanduel summer sports are in full swing and whether you’re all about baseball under the lights right now all right buddy so again you’re on your vacation welldeserved breather before the craziness of the next several weeks because it’s not just the draft right it’s free agency it’s summer league basketball it’s it’s lots of uh stuff coming up here in january or july i am curious how you felt about the conclusion of the finals again on yesterday’s show i talked about the shortening the season obviously the sad injury for tyrese hallebertton uh there were people on social media which happens all the time talking about whether or not this thunder championship has an asterisk because of all the different injuries from aaron gordon with the nuggets obviously john morant uh in the grizzlies series and then hallebertton in game seven that was a competitive game right at halftime the pacers were up and then okc pulled away in the third quarter in game seven uh just your general thoughts on the state of play in the nba coming out of the finals the pacers what do they do coming off of the hallebertton injury and we talked about how the grizzlies could potentially uh take advantage hypothetically speaking right it might take a little more than cole anthony and the 16th pick yeah but that sort of stuff you know trying to catch the thunder what does okc do you know they they’re eventually going to have to pay some of these guys maybe they start thinking about that a little bit earlier than some might project isaiah hartenstein or hartinstein is a good example of that how does memphis fit around this post okc winning its first nba championship world yeah i think the western conference is is still projected to be really tough this upcoming season so you know and the east perhaps historically weak yeah yeah so so the best case would be the league just automatically uh adds two teams next season and then the grizzlies move to the eastern conference but that’s not happening fingers crossed but um look there are lessons that come out of this and um you know a big one for me always is is when you have a core in place you you you keep you keep pulling you keep pushing because at the end of the day uh the the injury look you know tends to turn and and we saw you know in this case i mean we don’t we don’t know how game seven plays out if tyrese hallebertton doesn’t get hurt or they keep but it’s the it’s pointing out the fact that you know um every year i’m starting to see this every single year when someone wins a championship people want to throw an asterk this year it was oh if you know steph curry didn’t get hurt or and they would have run into the warriors and jimmy butler and and traymond and that crew or if you know tyres hallebertton injury doesn’t happen or if aaron gordon injury doesn’t happen okc doesn’t win the championship last year it was oh you know uh the cavs you know tyresese hallebert missed half that series or it was donovan mitchell being hurt it was jimmy butler being hurt you know in the first round like the cavs kind of um you know got away i mean not the cavs the celtics and then you just go year by year you know like before that you know with with jokic led nuggets and then before that it was the the suns and the bucks both benefited uh from the injury bug on their way uh to winning championships or whatever the case may be but the point is uh if the grizzlies really believe that hey we can build this thing around jaw and jiren um you you plug away for a few years you you do this extension for jiren that gives you a four-year window john still has three years on his current deal i know people are starting to talk about his extension and whatnot um he is eligible you know for an extension uh this summer but seems early for that though doesn’t it like does that really make sense for jaw to do it doesn’t really make sense um for either party on my end at this point i think people are just throwing it out there just because it is a way that the grizzlies can financially show their commitment uh to john morant or whatever the case may be but um yeah i don’t really see um that being uh a route uh that that’s going to be something that’s going to be taken care of this summer but we we we’ll see i mean john has let go of his agent and you know he’s agentless now and and you know he’s kind of as of right now as of this moment it’s it’s the sga and the joy liid model where um you know i can do bad all by myself but we’ll we’ll see you know uh how it how it goes or whatever but uh the the point that i was making initially and i want to stick to that point is the fact that um uh injuries happen every single year and grizzlies fans know that as well as anyone because the grizzlies have been uh bitten by injury and pretty much all of their recent playoff runs even if you go back to uh the tony allen hamstring injury which joe mullen uh uh remembers very well the mike connley broken face thanks a lot cj mccollum that’s the one that’s the one for joe mullax right there but but with this uh rendition of the grizzlies or whatever it’s it’s mostly been john morant injuries uh and and and you know there’ve been some others mixed in there as well you know desmond bane with the back in a gold state series but with all that being said um you know health has been on the okc side i remember coming into the season we talked about it joe we were talking about man okc was unusually lucky uh and well unusually healthy i wouldn’t say lucky unusually healthy uh last season uh when all those guys were playing 70 plus games and then this season you know czech hunger had the hip injury and you know they had a couple more you know not too many injuries but they had a couple more mixed in there but at the end of the day when the playoffs got here and the calendar turned to april all those guys were readily available and pretty much played the rest of the way uh that’s the type of fortune you’re going to need uh look small markets can win the championship in today’s nba shout out to adam silver ain’t that right joe the nba’s parody is is at an all-time high so i mean you’re seeing teams like oklahoma city you’re seeing teams like indiana pacers it’s harder to repeat or even three repeat than it’s ever been before not just because the league talent has reached another level but we’re seeing teams like that boston celtics roster there is no way we should be talking about those guys breaking up just because jason tatum is hurt uh in in a normal cba u outlook i think we would be talking about oh you know it’s it’s an off year but they’ll get tatum back next year and they’ll be ready to run it back for a championship split the way that the current c cba is outlined you’re going to see a lot of teams like we just saw the suns just trade freaking kevin durant you think they really wanted to trade kevin durant i i don’t know about all that they just had to because again when you’re paying three players in the case of deon devin booker bradley bill and kevin durant 50 plus million dollars in this cba economy uh it’s just not smart business so uh i i think you know the grizzlies are positioned well from the the twostar uh standpoint where you go jaw and jiren and you have to build around that but uh they got to retool this thing fast and that is important because okc has all those dudes under contract so if there was ever a team that could repeat in this parody driven league this would be the oklahoma city thunder time absolutely and yeah shout out to al adam silver i don’t know why he would have a marketing team or why he would have advisers he’d just take his advice from social media right game one you couldn’t even tell it was a freaking finals game and then people on x complain and wouldn’t you know it there it is people complain on social media how come the starters don’t get announced anymore and then wouldn’t you know it game five or game six whatever it was starters are announced he’s a man of the people joe he’s a man of the people he’s a man of the bots he’s a man of the keyboard warriors he gets no respect from me adam silver the worst commissioner in professional sports i stand on that business to say the least but i think to michael you you hit the nail on the head the importance of depth the importance of coaching right both mark dagenov and rick carile what a phenomenal coaching job by rick carile i to get the pacers in that he’s one of the best one of the best potentially ever right the the actual results don’t necessarily say it but i mean he’s been an excellent coach in numerous franchises it’s him right it’s him you need talent you need jimmy’s and joe’s as they say in coaching but the x’s and o’s are pretty stout when it comes to rick carile so you need coaching you need length and defense you need depth memphis has a blueprint now it’s time to execute let michael and i know what you’re thinking postnba finals on x are in the comments that’s it for today’s episode when we come back tomorrow to michael it’ll be the day of the draft we’ll do an nba draft preview make some predictions and then maybe as a quick little sidebar our buddy taylor jenkins is uh maybe a finalist for this new york knicks job that’d be kind of cool for tank wouldn’t it why didn’t we call him tj jank when he was here because it’s a bad nickname for him i mean taylor jenkins didn’t really give me that those those type of vibes or teaching just roll off the tongue with easy with him but anyways um yeah definitely an interesting opportunity over there one of those situations where a new voice just a different perspective could lead to some things but we’ll talk more about it for sure it doesn’t get much different from tibido to jenkins i will say that that’s something to maybe explore a little bit on tomorrow’s episode but again the nba fba draft excuse me will be wednesday remember it’s a twoight event now first round on wednesday second round on thursday i believe that’s right correct me if i’m wrong that’s right that’s right yeah um so anyway first round tomorrow we’ll do a preview of all that of course and then look at the second round where the grizzlies currently have two selections uh we’ll talk about that on our wednesday show make sure that you’re liking commenting rating reviewing subscribing wherever you get podcasts apple spotify amazon google youtube make us a part of your
