Mavericks Draft Rumors: Cooper Flagg Switching Positions? Jason Kidd Compares Flagg To NBA LEGEND

happy Flag Week Mavs fans This week Cooper Flag officially becomes a Dallas Maverick And on today’s show I’m going to tell you guys everything I’ve been hearing about Cooper Flag about 48 hours away from the 2025 NBA draft We’ll hop into all of that here in just a moment but before we do if you’re excited for Cooper Flag to finally become a Dallas Maverick hit that thumbs up icon right now It’s a Cooper Flag be playing a new position when he comes to the Dallas Mavericks here in the next couple of days i’ve been hearing that he could potentially be playing some shooting guard And I know that this was something Jason Kidd mentioned back in an interview a couple of weeks ago but the more people I’ve been talking to and the more I’ve been kind of looking online and looking at the possibilities of how Flag is going to fit with this Maverick’s roster I really do think that him playing the two is going to become more and more of a possibility So let’s dive into why that could potentially be the case And I think the why starts with PJ Washington The Mavs don’t want to trade him because they feel PJ is a fantastic locker room presence They think he is great on the defensive end and he can really help instill this new culture that Nico Harrison wants to implement But I do think they feel that Washington is too valuable to come off the bench on a regular basis And if that’s the case you might be asking where does that leave Cooper Flag well Flag mainly played the three or the four in his time at Duke Could they move him to the two and make an extremely big lineup i kind of think that’s where the Mavericks are leaning right now And I know again this leads me leads me to your next question Well what happens with Klay Thompson i think it’s time for Klay to potentially come off the bench and be the six-man for this team I think he’d be really good at that role and it would allow him to keep his minutes down a little bit He played some uh 27 minutes a game last year in his lone season with the Mavericks And while Klay still has a lot going for him he can still shoot it really well shot 39% from three last year on over seven attempts 90% from the free throw line 14 points a game Didn’t really do anything outside of the arc I I think Clay as a six-man could be really good and it would allow the Mavericks to play both Cooper Flag and PJ Washington alongside Anthony Davis together in the starting lineup to create one of the biggest starting lineups in the NBA You’d have Flag at the two alongside Washington at the three Davis at the four and Lively at the five I would love if Anthony Davis was willing to play more center but it doesn’t sound like he or the Mavericks want that to happen And with Lively and Gaffford here in the fold that does make sense to keep Davis at the four But this would be an extremely versatile athletic defensive lineup that the Mavericks could run out there You could truly switch two through four and Cooper Flag could be a guy that the Mavericks rely on more so on the offensive end as well to create some things We will talk about the offensive end here in just a moment But with this starting five assuming Kyrie Irving is healthy and back from his injury grade the starting five for me down in the comments section A B C D or F How good do you think this potential starting five look would be some more about what I’m hearing surrounding Flag is its potential that Jason Kidd could be giving Cooper Flag the keys to the offense early which includes him playing some point forward And I did think that was interesting cuz one of my concerns about Cooper Flag coming into this draft if there were any concerns were was that his handle was a little bit loose and he doesn’t have great playmaking instincts as far as initiating offense goes but the Mavericks think that they can mold Flag into that And with a couple of workouts with God Shamgod you could really improve his handle Now it does seem like God Shamgod is on his way out potentially to the Orlando Magic but I think Jason Kidd views Flag as someone who can be a focal point of the offense And with Kyrie Irving out for the first half of the season next year it seems like the Mavs are going to be ready to give him the keys really early If you remember all the way back to when Jason Kidd was traded from the Nets to the Mavericks back in 2007 or 2008 uh Rick Carile was pretty hesitant to give Kid the keys but he just gave it to him and it worked out to the tune of an NBA title in 2011 And when you look at what Jason Kidd did with Luca he gave him the keys really early And I think he wants to do the same with Cooper Flag and give him the keys and let him learn and make mistakes on the job and let him you know thrive as this team’s number one overall pick who’s the present and the future of this team We’re going to find out really quick whether or not Cooper Flack can play that point forward role I can’t wait to see it We’re we maybe even we’ll see it in some summer league games It sounds like he’s going to play one or two summer league games for the Mavericks as well So that that will be super exciting But um it kid wants to give him the keys early and often And with Kyrie out why not just go let him hoop what do the Mavericks really have to lose they’re going to have other point guards who will be able to handle the ball the uh you know the ball handling load so to speak With Brandon Williams and whoever they sign in free agency perhaps a Chris Paul or Malcolm Brogden or whoever that may be They’re going to have other guys who can handle the rock But if you want to make Cooper Flag the primary ball handler for the first half of the season while Kyrie’s rehabbing I’m all good with here in the blue and white Man it’s going to be fun for sure I did think this was interesting as well Jason Kidd’s Cooper Flag comparison is a young Grant Hill If you remember which most of you guys probably don’t I wasn’t even alive when Grant Hill had his rookie season but he did win rookie of the year and had a fantastic start to his career in Detroit before um they before he you know had the injury bug and before those finally caught up to him and he was kind of cooked by the end of his career But he did have a pretty long career in the NBA and he was a fantastic seventime all-star player including an all-star appearance in his rookie season And when you look at the numbers that Grant Hill put up in his rookie year I do think it’s feasible for Cooper Flag to reach these kind of heights He averaged 19.9 points 6.4 rebounds and five assists shot 47.7% from the field and averaged 2.7 stocks per game which is steals and blocks combined Look Grant Hill was also an excellent defender which is what people are saying about Cooper Flag as well that he’s the best defender in this draft and the most versatile defender Like I said he won the Rookie of the Year in ‘9495 and was an all-star Can you expect the same from Cooper Flag i don’t know if it’s fair to expect that he’s going to be an all-star in his first season Is it fair to expect that he wins rookie of the year and is the best rookie from this year’s class right away i do think that’s absolutely fair to expect And if he has the career of Grant Hill minus the injuries you’re looking at a guy who’s going to be one of the greatest Mavericks of all time And that’s what we’re all hoping for when you get Cooper Flag If you get those stats if you get 20 points and six rebounds he gets a steal and a block a night I think you’re thrilled I think the Mavericks would be thrilled with that output with a guy who’s not going to turn 19 years old until the middle of December Cooper Flag is the undisputed number one pick in this year’s draft He’s going to become a Maverick here soon and it’s going to be a really fun ride man I I think it’s going to be great and I’m excited to see especially if Jason Kidd lets him have the ball and let’s just lets him go and lets him play free early in the season Do you think Kidd should give Cooper Flag the keys to the offense right away if so hit that thumbs up icon for me right finally on today’s show I’ve been talking to a bunch of friends who are Mavs fans and a bunch of people who are kind of in the know surrounding the Mavericks Let’s play a little hypothetical here Let’s inu include Cooper Flag in the Mavericks Lakers trade Would you reconsider your stance on what you think the trade is whether it’s good whether it’s great whether it’s bad Would you reconsider your your stance if you include Cooper Flag in the trade so let’s take a look at what the trade would be with Flag Anthony Davis and Cooper Flag alongside Max Christie in that 2029 first round pick to the Mavericks in exchange for Luca Maxi Kuba and Marie Morris It makes it look a little better I’m not going to sit here and say Nico Harrison deserves credit because he absolutely does not deserve credit for the Mavericks winning the 1.8% chance to get Cooper flag He doesn’t deserve credit for that whatsoever But it certainly does make it easier to swallow and I’m someone who is the biggest Luca fan out there but allowing or replacing Luca with Flag If the Mavs did not win the lottery we would be having a whole different discussion about how this franchise is doomed But they finally got a stroke of luck for the first time in the 45-year history of the team Ended up winning the lottery You go from generational player in Dirk Nitzky to generational player in Luca to hopefully generational player in Cooper Flag No real team in American professional sports can really say that The closest you can think about think of is the Green Bay Packers going from Brett Favre to Aaron Rogers to Jordan Love That’s that’s about as close as it gets But the Mavericks have had an incredible stroke of luck with two generational hopefully three generational players backto backto back And hopefully Cooper Flag can bring them an NBA title here for the first time since 2011 So let me ask you guys once again does including Flag make the trade better just give me a yes or no down Cooper Flagg is set to become a Dallas Maverick when the 2025 NBA Draft begins Wednesday evening as the Mavs have the No.1 overall pick. The latest Mavericks rumors on Cooper Flagg take a look at where Flagg could be playing in the Mavs’ lineup. With P.J. Washington still on the roster, some suggest that Flagg could play the 2 next to Chris Paul or whoever the Mavs will sign in 2025 NBA Free Agency.
