excited are you will the god lead i am very excited as the great war once said i am very excited yes it is goat day ladies and gents that’s what it is and what’s great about it is like in the past I feel like the draft was kind of its own thing and then free agency would hit and trades would kind of be around it now it’s like it’s all just happening like we’ve already had three massive well I shouldn’t say massive trades but we’ve had two pretty huge trades and a couple more that have been pretty surprising so um last night there was some action we’ll talk about that maybe on a separate pod about the Drew Holiday trade and what the implications are for the bulls there because there are some interesting ones yeah um but I just love that it’s all happening and like the finals was only a day ago like it’s just the eyes are dancing it’s just awesome he’s just ready it’s just awesome also tune tune in to All City NBA because that young man was on that show with the one and only Tim Leggler yeah we talked we talked a lot of trades we talked a lot of draft stuff so if you’re interested uh Legs and I had a great conversation on all NBA all right and speaking of that let’s get into the moves that the Chicago Bulls themselves have made they have hired a new director of basketball research and development apologies if I get your name wrong sir barack Khan Cook i hope it’s Barack Han Cook just for the silly person in me cuz I would just love to say that about you dog but man Barack Cook that dude cook it up there that would be cool to say he is the new director of basketball research and development for the Chicago Bulls he is coming from the Dallas Mavericks where he spent previous four years there also uh basketball index he was a part of that also as well go this is analytic stuff so does this make you excited well I mean I can’t say that I really know too much about him or what kind of expertise he brings um and I think typically that’s just not something that you would get a lot of insight into whether it was the Bulls or any other team however obviously there was some reporting done earlier this off season that the Bulls had let go Steve Weinman who was the director of analytics for a very long time dating back even to the Garin Pax days really great at his job really bright um sharp guy who was like just very good at what he did um and that left a void in the Bull’s analytics department and so um I assume that they would hire someone we now know who it is um but yeah we’re curious to kind of see how he helps shape what the Bulls do in terms of their analytics still very small department I believe just two people now but um certainly more than one so that’s good certainly more than one that’s called math ladies and gentlemen so yeah congratulations to you young man thank you for uh coming here to the Chicago Bulls and hopefully you can stop by this show and we can have a conversation about it that would be absolutely awesome uh another move that was made for the Chicago Bulls was Javon Carter exercising his 6.8 player option $6.8 million player option he shall return to the Chicago Bulls first of all 6.8 million bucks let me clap that up for you young sir congratulations that is damn phenomenal that is awesome uh I think we expected him to pick this up when we found out that this was part of his deal uh last year that he had this player option we were like that’s yeah you’re not going to pass that one up and just to get that kind of money to continue to be with your hometown team because we spoke to him about what it meant to him to be a Chicago Bull and some of those things he was even speechless on about what it meant for him to put that uniform on so for a hometown guy to get to wear that jersey and to get a check for it like he’s about to get man congratulations to him yeah and you know I thought this was a really good signing when it happened um obviously it hasn’t really turned out the way that I think anybody would have hoped uh Shirley Javon wishes that he had a bigger role more minutes more opportunity um and I’m sure Art Turus like this is a guy that he thought was going to really contribute to that core with Lavine with D Rozan with uh Vousvich with Lonzo out um as a defensive first point guard who could pick up 94 ft who could shoot threes unfortunately it hasn’t really worked out that way um but I thought it was a good signing at the time and now on an expiring contract he could be uh uh aggregated into a deal in a trade if you wanted to consolidate some salaries and move on from him or uh he along with a bunch of other players I believe $94 million of of salary coming off the books going into next year um which opens up a lot of space so uh you know he’s a good locker room presence like especially the young guys really gravitate towards him he’s always joking around with like Dalon and Julian um in the locker room after games and and really a hard worker like really gets his work in incredible shooter and just like a workhorse in practice really sets the tone that way so um just so many guards on this team it’s been hard to carve out a role but certainly as you said Dave to be expected that he would pick up that option um and now we’ll see how our tourist navigates following that correct correct i mean it just puts another guard back on this Bulls roster but like you said someone who was definitely good for the team i’ve always noticed him on the bench it’s one of the things I look at when I’m watching the games is how engaged guys are on the bench and he is always the first one up to congratulate a teammate when they hit a three when they do something well and he also wasn’t playing a lot but just the fact that he always stays ready and as you said just a hard worker so he is always prepared to get on the floor but just also prepared you know for those young guys and to give them a compliment and to let them know whether they did something right or something wrong man so it’s good to have that kind of guy you know what I mean on your team and yeah man congratulations to you sir get that money not mad at you at all uh let’s move on and talk about what we heard from our guy Jake Fiser via the Stein line ladies and gentlemen because he is saying some stuff that the Chicago Bulls might want to trade up oh man let’s see a quote from that what he had to say there have been some fresh whispers oh I love that phrase since then about the Bulls angling to trade up from their number 12 spot in Wednesday’s draft in pursuit of size first of all Fresh Whisper is going to be the name of my new album i absolutely love that right there but I don’t know why this kind of surprised me a little bit Goat cuz we kind of had a mini conversation on on the show about this and your feelings about them kind of staying at 12 and you didn’t feel like there was a true guy that you would want to make that move for not that you know you’re upset if the Bulls do make that move or anything but you just didn’t see it that way so hearing that the Bulls are kind of looking at that that they may want to trade up to get a a bigger size kind of person does that mean Malo watch is the guy that they’re looking at or could it mean some other kind of player i think it would have to right i mean uh Queen is some is certainly falling down draft boards i mean he has some real question marks obviously the upside and the skill is great i’ve cooled on him quite a bit over the draft process um incredibly talented scorer but just has a a lot of huge question marks i think he could fit um and we’ll talk more about him in the second part of the show cuz I had him uh in our mock draft but um I just don’t think you’re going to need to move up for him and I don’t think Sorber is going to be somebody you need to move up for either so if indeed the Bulls are after a center it does feel like Malawatch is the guy but at what cost uh what point in the draft is the right point to make a move up uh do you have to give up multiple assets do you have to give up future draft picks like what is the cost there um and is that really your guy like to me that would be a departure from the type of big man that the Bulls typically want and that I assume they still want which is a dynamic dribble pass shoot big somebody who can space the floor attack closeouts make plays operate as a passing hub dribble handoffs like that’s been really valuable to the Bulls whether it was in their old iteration with D Rozan and Lavine having VHIvvic there and not to mention trading away Daniel Gaffford who was a very you know solid rim rim protector lob catcher type of big contract it would be surprising to me if they now turned around and went for that kind of big they went for common Malawatch who you know does have some potential to be a floor spacer and shooter like I don’t want to disqualify that but it’s just not something that he has done and so you’re kind of betting on the upside there not like drafting him with the idea that he’ll be able to give you that um and so maybe they just feel really comfortable there and and it’s worth the swing maybe the cost of moving up from 12 to seven is like three second round picks and it’s like yeah you probably may as well do that and get a guy that you feel strongly about but um as far as yeah the Fresh Whispers like I’m surprised that the Bulls would be in the market especially given the fact that it does appear that they are targeting a big that Is Malawatch the guy i feel like he doesn’t really fit with what the Bulls have historically wanted and so moving up for him doesn’t necessarily make sense however I do think it could be a a good value play there if it’s not super expensive and you do want to transition to more of a lob catcher rim protector type of big so I could see it either way but um this is really the first time that we’ve heard any real credence to the idea that the Bulls could move up so even that in itself is very interesting yeah it’s very interesting and honestly it excites me um lets me know the Bulls aren’t sitting on their hands and they’re actually being you know active you know and you know taking these calls and listening because I think we said this before and I heard uh your boy Tim Leggler say that my guy too shout out Tim Leggler where he was talking about how the Bulls even during the season last year should have had like eight phones out in front of him and just answering him and listening to everybody it feels like when I hear stuff like that that lets me know that they’re doing that kind of thing like they’re actually listening and they’re taking these calls from these teams and they’re not being comfortable where they are because that is what was frustrating the fans so much and this is just felt like the Bulls were comfortable being who they are 39 and 43 39 and 43 another season where you don’t hit 500 but and and you drafting another person that you know nobody is really that excited about or you don’t have a draft pick or something like that but hearing that they are being proactive and saying you know what 12 isn’t good enough maybe we can move up and find somebody that is out of what people think that we should do i’m okay with that too i’m all about the out of the box thinking i’m completely okay with that but I want structure and I ask for structure and this for me is a part of that is is going and touching every single part of this draft that you possibly can asking every possible question can we trade up can we trade down should we stay where we are all of that stuff for me makes sense when I hear that the Chicago Bulls are asking these questions because this is what I wanted though i wanted the structure and to act like a team that is in the NBA that is you know operating correctly and hearing this stuff these fresh whispers excites me a little bit so let me put it to you this way um just real quick before we have to go to break here mhm if the cost let’s say it’s tomorrow night Malach is sliding it’s five it’s pick six he’s still on the board pick seven he’s still on the board pick eight goes to the Brooklyn Nets and they don’t take him and it’s pick nine and the Raptors are on the clock and they call you the GM of the Bulls and they say “Give us iodumu give us the Portland Trailblazers pick lottery protected next year and give us 12 and we’ll give you nine and you can take Malawatch.” I would I would say “Come back with something a little bit better and hang up the phone.” All right i think that’s a little too much you know what I mean like I just think it’s a little What about just the Blazers pick then we’ll talk we’ll talk a little more we’ll hear about those fresh whistles you heard it here first we’re gonna take a break y’all when we come back we’re going to talk about some news Casey Johnson has about the Chicago Bulls and who they should be taking you that is KDM production that is Will the Goalie over there i am Big Dave uh go Casey Johnson colleague shout out to him had some news on his show sir talking couple of nuggets a couple of nuggets just a couple of nuggets or two about the NBA draft and who the Chicago Bulls may or may not be looking at to take um and the two names that he said that the Bulls will be looking at at number 12 or maybe looking at at number 12 Colin Murray Boils and Noah Essen i’m a little surprised i’m not not by Colin Murray Boils i don’t think I’m surprised by that essenay surprised me a little bit shout out Ricky O’Donnell that is definitely one of his picks and he a huge fan of him and he also likes Colin Murray Boils as well nothing against them i just I’m a little surprised about SNA there he feels like a guy that would be maybe 14th or 15th in my opinion but this is why I said this is goat day because you are here to enlighten us and break it all down so hearing this news about Colin and Essenay what are your thoughts on it sir so those are probably my top two picks for the Bulls um just because I think they’re versatile they’re defensive oriented they’re smart they’re athletes like Colinary Boils you know we’ve talked a bunch about him but just the the defensive infrastructure that he could provide single-handedly I think would really be helpful for this team i think he’s a great leader i think he’s a great quarterback of the defense and I am kind of buying his offensive tools i know there’s some limitations there with the jump shot um but he feels like the kind of passing hub and face up scorer that could be really useful especially to the Bulls in the half court like if you have questions about Gideon Kobe White’s fit long term and you feel like you need more scoring I feel like he could kind of give you some of that um as an ancillary piece and then for Noah Essen like just an incredible athlete like 69 610 athletic runs the floor draws a ton of fouls defends um very long very tall not somebody who’s going to be able to like switch one through five i think he’s pretty upright and he’s pretty much like a three or four mhm um but I think he’s got a ton of potential and he’s very raw and I think kind of fits with the Arcturus like toolsy wing athlete who we can hope to mold into a shooter who we can hope to develop their ball skills um into that and so I think those are two names that make a lot of sense for me we talked to a couple people at the combine Dave that said that would be a little bit of a weird fit with Modis because Modis is very much a four to me and those guys are both very much fours so maybe you have some questions about the fit there but I I think that those guys are talented enough that they could be really good picks i actually think SNG is probably going to be a top 10 pick there was just uh a bunch of stuff about him and we’re going to talk um about him later on the show but he basically left early from his team’s playoff run in Germany to be at the draft tomorrow night um and he was just in an interview that I was watching before we started recording and he said that like the players he models his game after are Pascal Seakum Scotty Barnes and OG Anobi it’s like what team do we think he’s going to probably the Raptors but um I do think that just his upside his athleticism his tools make him a top 10 pick and if he’s there at 12 I think they should probably go for it so those guys I think fit the bill of what the Bulls need and I think they give you both upside and defense in a way that fits into the core i don’t think either of them are going to be like franchise players A1 options but I think they’re both like very um stable building blocks that this team really needs that it also kind of for me gives me a little insight into what the Chicago Bulls could be valuing you know in this draft as you just stated for me it was when I saw those two guys the first thing I was like it’s defense it’s clearly what you’re valuing here is defense in your in your front court because it is a need it is a true need not just to have a front court player but one that is actually a defender because the best one you have is a true help defender and our guy you know Musellis really good help defender right there but these guys both of them coming in at that young of age and can impact your team immediately as far as the defensive end that also says to me these are not guys you are going to bring in to put on the bench these are guys you’re bringing in to start immediately on your team and maybe that’s why I didn’t have Sengage so high because I’m thinking of Modu Zeales and I’m like I don’t see him as a three i see him more as a four maybe you could cheat at the five a little bit you know with him but he doesn’t strike me as a guy that kind of fits you know what I’m saying right with that but when you’re a guy who’s a defensive first kind of player it’s easier to fit in you know what I’m saying with anybody because you don’t need the basketball to truly make your impact but I I can see both of these young men fitting you know what I’m saying kind of on this team which one do you feel I guess and this is maybe putting you on the spot a little bit but which one do you feel like kind of best fits in with this Bulls team i think either of them fit really good and that’s why I like both of them as options um I have Colin Murray Boils right now on my not quite finalized but pretty close big board um I have him eight and SNA 9 so very close together um oh man okay they And I think like if you’re talking about fit with Modis like yes they maybe both play the four but certainly CMB like he can guard the perimeter better than Modis he can also help him protect the paint um he can quarterback things he like his skill set doesn’t really overlap with Modis even if his like size does which is why I didn’t mention him yes i think Esenay overlap is a little bit more he he uh overlaps a little bit more from a skill set and from a position standpoint whereas I think CMBB kind of just gives you a different look and those guys could actually mesh well together so I probably lean CMBB but like I said those are probably my top two choices for the Bulls at this point um there’s a lot of other considerations do they need a guard will that pretend to trade do they need a big man will they reach for somebody even if they’re not like the perfect fit for what they want to do um but just in terms of like talent upside combination defensive you know win now type of players that can contribute right away i think those guys tick a lot of boxes for me another guy that was mentioned uh Casey Johnson talked about was Derek Queen and I thought this was interesting because he kind of questioned whether the Bulls will be able to pass on Derek Queen if he falls to number 12 now goat I had him as number two guy you know what I’m saying on my board because I just find that incredibly flag right yes absolutely but that’s very it’s very hard you know what I’m saying for me to find even though I don’t mind CMBB or or SN it’s very hard for me to find reasons to completely just pass on this guy who has this kind of skill set that I can see fitting in really well with the Chicago Bulls because when we talk about you know the kind of dribble pass shoot that they want you also mentioned in the first block you want that in V and Vu is why Vu fit so well you know what I’m saying with the team because he had those kind of tools well you bring in a young guy with those same kind of tools man that kind of fits that do you agree that like if the Bull if he’s there at 12 like the Bulls just kind of got to take this guy if he’s there so uh we just did a mock draft for today Derek Bodner and I for um of our sites obviously with the draft guide you can get all that stuff as a CO die hard um that was the situation that I found myself in which was Derek Green was on the board and I just felt like I couldn’t pass on that talent mhm um what’s interesting about it is another thing that Casey said and that we all have talked about and know is that the Bulls are also looking for players that fit their style and that are can be a part of the identity that they are trying to build that’s playing with pace that’s getting up and down shooting a lot of threes i think you can imagine Queen getting into some of those actions like grab and go rebound push the ball up the court like that’s in his game that’s in his bag and I think he could fit in in that way but you also look at some of the teams that the Bulls are trying to emulate the Thunder the Pacers the Rockets like these are teams that I guess the Rockets have shangon but like the Pacers for example have a stretch big and like versatile wings they don’t have the like slower ball dominant center that you run offense through the way that some of these other teams do and so I wonder if that’s just like in the cards for them at all ultimately like I like Queen’s upside a lot and I think it would make a lot of sense for a team to take a swing on him sure and I could see them doing that before 12 but I also just feel like the Bulls situation is not right for him like I just and you could talk me into it tomorrow if they take him but like I just have a hard time seeing him succeeding in a team where you have multiple ball dominant players like Josh Giddy like Kobe White who want the ball they also want to get touches for Modis like yes they’re going to move the ball around and pass it and stuff like that but that’s a lot of guys that want the ball in their hands sure and I think Queen really needs it he’s also not a floor spacer he’s not going to open up the paint for Josh Giddy and Kobe White in driving lanes he’s not going to protect the rim at all like he really needs to have a three-point shooting rim protecting big next to him like a Victor Wmanyama an Alex Sar a player like that sort of the new generation Chat Homegrren of player who can help unlock his offensive skill set while also allowing him to be what he can be on the offensive side allowing him to do the things that make him an interesting prospect which is let him run the offense let him like have the ball in his hands and I just don’t know that the Bulls can provide that situation i think the talent is really interesting and I like I said if he’s there at 12 and they picked him I would probably talk myself into it yeah but I just feel like the fit concerns for me with the Bulls this is a situation where it’s like you have to take the fit consideration into the equation when you’re talking about best player available because if you can’t put that player in a situation that fits for him to where he’s really going to grow and reach his potential then he’s not going to be the best player available and I think that’s something that the Bulls have to consider again I think he could be really good and maybe it just doesn’t matter or maybe other moves are made down the line and you know the roster isn’t what it looks like it is today but that would be my like mental gymnastics that I would be going through trying to figure out if this is the right pick i think that um that wouldn’t be enough to deter me from it because I would say that would be a coach’s issue after that if I’m providing you with all this talent and you know on my team it’s up to the coach to find out how to maximize that kind of talent so then I’m looking at Billy Donovan because you have to develop this this dude who is super skilled and super talented like that um a guy who possesses the si same similar skills to a guy like Noola Vuchovich who also you know kind of worked well now know Nola different player obviously this is an all-star we’re talking about but the skill set is kind of there you know what I’m saying from what they have and also those same guys aren’t going to be on the floor for 48 minutes so you you can find time within the game to allow him to do what he does best and allow him to be great on the basketball floor I immediately think of Derrick Rose and Joe Kim Noah when Dererick Rose on the floor it’s Derrick Rose time and and we was gone it was all Joe Kim Noah time after that so you can find ways to do this and you can find ways to work it’s just too much talent there for me to just be like that is the reason I’m not going to take that absolutely i think that’s totally fair and I think that’s again the question that the Bulls are going to be faced with if he is on the board like do you want to go for someone who you feel like maybe not like okay let’s say Derek Queen has all-star potential but there’s only a 5% chance that he hits it compared to and like a 25% chance that he’s a bust because the things that he does well if he can’t reach that height then he’s got nothing else to support himself in terms of being a complimentary piece so let’s say there’s a 5% chance he turns into a star and a 30% chance he’s a bust are you willing to take that risk compared to a Cedric Coward who has you know a 60% chance of being a very good role player and maybe a 5% chance of being a star or Carter Bryant who has you know a a very very small percent chance of being a star almost zero but it’s very hard to imagine him missing and not being able to contribute like part of me feels like the Bulls in the past the way that they did it was draft wings get defensive guys that that can help grow on the perimeter and then make the trade for the big because that guy is just hard to find in the draft the guy the guy who does it all who can run offense who can dribble pass shoot that’s a hard thing to find and I wonder if they wouldn’t try using that same strategy again next time they make a big swing uh Casey also suggests that the Bulls may look to draft and stash at 45 in the second round that will be very interesting oh my god think of Marco immediately and I got scared coming up after this y’all our guy Jeff Goodman is going to join us and he’s going to hear me praise him for his amazing podcast and his basketball takes about the it right now and it’s it’s okay i I do want to say this to you uh Jeff man I don’t listen to many podcasts at all but Field of 68 is always a podcast that I listen to and I absolutely love it it’s how I got introduced to to your guy uh Terrence Oglesby i’ve we’ve had him on the show several times i absolutely love that guy but I am a huge huge fan of that podcast man i just wanted to give you your love for that thanks i I appreciate it we have fun we we we like to kind of entertain and inform in whatever order you want to put those two in we’re trying to do the same thing here exactly and you’re doing a great job of it man but um let’s get into this man we just were talking about the Bulls and who they might be taking at number 12 uh we heard Casey Johnson mentioned guys like Colin Murray Boils uh Noah Essenay we talked even about Derek Queen i am a huge fan of uh Cedric Howard um if it came down to it sir and you were making that decision at number 12 who do you feel the Chicago Bulls should be picking if he’s there I would take Derek Queen i would take Derek Queen i just I feel like he fits a need and he’s probably the best player available at that time you know if you’re if you’re Chicago you’re looking you have needs all over the place let’s face it i mean they they just do their roster is underwhelming i feel bad for Billy Donovan i feel bad i’ve known Billy forever i will say this guys and I mean this of all the college coaches who have left retired left quit been fired whatever the college coach the coach I miss the most is Billy Donovan by far by far and I don’t know if you guys have like I’ve seen him loosen up like I’ve seen Billy with a couple in him doing the Ric Flair impersonation walking down the streets of Akran Ohio okay at an AU event so like I’ve seen a different side of Billy than a lot of people um I just wish they had more talent i wish he had a better chance to show um you know how good a coach he is in the league i mean obviously at OKC he had good talent but you know the KD experiment didn’t work there in in Chicago you just look at the roster right now and again they need everything they need absolutely everything which is why you know you go best player available you don’t worry about a big necessarily if you love a guy and you think he has a chance to be a an allstar caliber type player which again is going to be hard to get at that spot but you never know um but Derek Queen what he gives you is a legitimate skill big who does everything he’s scoring the post both hands um he can pass the the hell out of it for a big and he’s way more athletic i mean you look at in the NCAA tournament the the gamewinner uh with Derek Queen and Maryland like they gave him the ball to go make a play you know from the top of the key and and and he was able to uh get downhill and you know I I just I’m not sure he’ll be there to be honest i’m not sure he’ll be there for for Chicago let me ask you uh just about Queen because for me I’m definitely intrigued by his upside like that it’s undeniable you mentioned the scoring uh the passing just like the floor game for a guy like that is super rare but to me I guess like the question I have is are the flaws in his game or the limitations that he has right now which obviously he can improve on defense shooting things like that do you feel like he needs a certain situation to really reach his potential and that if he’s put into a situation where he doesn’t have room protection behind him that will hurt him if he’s put into a situation where he doesn’t have good floor spacing or he has to be the floor spacer that you might not be able to bring the most out of him because to me he falls into that category maybe more than anybody else in the lottery where he just needs a very specific fit and I don’t know if the Bulls can give him that m you don’t think they have a I mean the floor spacing will be okay but but not great it depends on modest and how well he can he can be a cons and I’ve seen him since he was at Brewster Academy and and I said back then I thought he had a chance to be maybe the number one overall pick his his talent level is ridiculous uh he’s just got to put on weight and I’m glad that you know they fed him to the Wolves last year like that was the right thing to do is just give him minutes and let him grow up quickly and you know even if I mean you think about it even with a kid like that right like get him production get him out there and then he becomes a guy that you can potentially move if you wanted to and increase his value because he’s putting up numbers and that’s kind of what you need to do in Chicago right now in a way is like these guys that are getting the opportunity you know them better than anybody you know if they’re guys you’re going to build around or not and and then you’ve got to be able to make trades uh with that in mind to try to and it’s just crazy that they can’t get free agents they just can’t get big-time free agents to Chicago it It baffles me it absolutely ba It’s Chicago it’s the Bulls they They And they need dudes like you can walk in there now again you may not win right away but you’re going to be the guy it’s a different world when you’re the guy in Chicago without a doubt man and I I don’t I we have no answer to that either we’ve been trying to answer that for a long time but um let’s say Derek Queen isn’t there you know what I’m saying at at number 12 if he is I would love to take him if he isn’t there what big do you think that that you’re looking at as far as after Derek Queen is gone as far as that kind of ranking like is it a Malawatch guy uh is it SNA like what kind of ranking do you have in your head per se about the bigs if they if Derek Queen isn’t there i’d be shocked if Malawatch is there i’d be shocked i think you’re looking at like Thomas Sorber Colin Murray Boils and Murray Boils I never understood the infatuation with him in the NBA some people had him in the top 10 i saw him plenty of times in person at South Carolina i like him but I think he’s a piece i think he’s a piece i think Sorber I would take Thomas Sorber ahead of him sorber’s kind of like an Al Horford type player um not the most athletic dude but high IQ skilled will get better shooting the ball from the perimeter um but to me it’s like all right if you’re Chicago do you move down maybe which is what I would do here i would look to move down i don’t know if they can i don’t know if there’s enough value to moving down but I would certainly entertain calls to try to move down and because I don’t think there’s much of a difference between 12 and 16 17 18 you know to me a guy that I would look at I I know they don’t need this position maybe as much but is is a Cedric Coward okay Cedric Coward is a high high upside dude okay he played two years at Eastern Washington nobody saw him he played last season six games at Washington State he is long he is versatile he can shoot the hell out of it he can defend and then you add in and this is where I think he’ll go even higher like when you talk to him it’s it’s like all of us talking it’s like this dude is an adult in the room he can he’ll he’ll go in and be able to command a room immediately and I’m not like that’s not why I draft them but that’s also the character helps right like you don’t want to roll the dice on character right now if you’re Chicago so to me he checks kind of every box in the upside box and and yeah to roll the dice but I think if you’re Chicago kind of have to do that right now don’t you roll those dice and hit a seven and an 11 when you get a guy like Cedric Coward thank you for preaching that i’ve been preaching it for a while now about Cedric Coward dave Dave is like obsessed with Coward i I really like him he really impressed us at the combine i mean you mentioned like the the interview itself i mean this dude is just man I was blown away all this stuff and on top of that he’s I think he’s one of the best shooters in the draft and I think he’s a great fit for any team but also just like slide him in the wing between Giddy Kobe and Modis and like you’ve got a guy that do you feel like he has real upside in terms of shot creation that’s like the one I think it’s there but I’m just guard he can guard like Mus can’t guard yet you know like like to me you can put him out there and you know he he’s going to guard a high level he’s going to make shots and yes he’ll be he’ll be a better shot creator i think it’ll take a little bit of time it’s going to be an adjustment for him he only played six games at Washington State got hurt last year but I just think it’s worth again the potential rather than taking a guy that you’re just like okay like maybe he’ll be a backup for you know however like take a guy that may hit you may hit it with you you talked about uh maybe the Bulls being in that position of trading down is there someone a little further down in the draft that the Bulls kind of can be looking at because the center the French center out of what school was it ver yes varane J oh no you’re talking about team Renault yes that guy renault I really like i I think he’s awesome uh is there someone else you would look at for the Bulls and if they’re trading down by the way if you thought talking to Coward was impressive try talk talking to Maxim Reno uh Stanford dude no no trust me we tried it i walked away being like “All right like this dude’s way too smart for me.” Like there’s just no and like smart in a good way not like smart like I know it all or any of that he’s just like he he’s awesome and he the the big thing that Maxine and I think he goes much later he goes like you know 25 to 35 uh but he he he showed the ability to stretch it this year and step out and make threes and I think that separates him from some of the other guys you know kid Baron um you know from France he’s kind of again like a a poor man’s mileatch you know that’s kind of what he is more defensive minded not going to give he’ll he’ll protect the rim and all that but again to me I don’t know i’m looking I’m looking for a guy from Chicago that that you know can give me like I I’d roll the dice like bro go down and get Jace Richardson and take a shot on a kid like that he had one year at Michigan State he’s scratching the surface of what he can be u you know a combo guard he’s small that’s the only thing he is small uh but a guy like that rather than you know I know people are gonna talk like like a Liam McNeely good player he’s gonna be a good piece you know what he’s going to be you know Danny Wolf you kind of know what he’s going to be um some of these other guys it’s not a great draft guys it’s not a great draft which is you know to me that 12 that 12 range is going to be interesting to see what’s there and then if if you love a guy take him if you don’t trade down trade out trade out if you if you can if you can because somebody else may love a guy at 12 that is a a spot where somebody may really like a guy and you may you may get good value for that pick what about you know we’ve talked a lot about the first round picks but the Bulls have 45 as well i know with like NIL guys like Yakel going back um just a bunch of them uh Leberon Filon was a guy I kind of liked in the late first round who who could potentially be there around 45 any upside swings there that you you feel like could be a good fit for the Bulls i mean I love Elijah Martin he could be there at 45 kid from Florida who you know I’ve known for a few years from his days at at FAU remember I mean he went to the Final Four at FAU which is crazy and then he won a national title at Florida elite defender tough the only thing is again he’s like my height he’s like 6’2 and a half 63 but he plays bigger he’s tough he’s hard-nosed uh he can score he can accept a role that’s all you want with 45 you just want a guy who can stick right like do one thing great and Elijah Martin can can really guard a high level and he’ll bring you that toughness which I think Chicago needs more of right they need more of that they need to get some for lack of a better word like mfers in that locker room right elijah Martin is one of those guys so to me I don’t know i I I take I take a shot on a guy like that at 45 uh we know we got to get you out of here but before you go I have to ask you this can you please give the people your favorite Billy Donovan story that you can say to us on air i mean again it was walking down the street like right after Billy had um turned down the magic we’re in Akran and we’re out at like a brewery or something like that and downtown Akran it’s LeBron James’s camp at that point right it’s his camp in Akran they had it for a few years there and uh we went out for a couple cocktails uh after uh it was over one one night and uh he’s telling the story to me of you know again uh him you know uh taking the magic job and going back and all that and we’re having a few and we’re walking down the streets of Akran and it’s like desolate i mean there’s nobody on the streets and I don’t even know how I got him going with it but and it was pre unfortunately it was pre you know video cell phone you know where I mean that thing would have went absolutely viral if I had if if we had that then but he’s doing the strut the Ric Flair strut yelling hollering i mean it was I mean if you see him if you talk to him ask him about it because I’m telling you he he he he was he he was in rare form and it was great to see him this past year i didn’t see him for long but when he got uh inducted in the Hall of Fame out at the Final Four uh I saw him for a few minutes and uh um like I said man that dude he’s just the thing with Billy Donovan that makes him special the thing that that to me stands out with Billy and almost every other coach I’ve met in any sport in any level when that dude is with somebody he is locked into that conversation especially these days with with this right we’re all like looking at our phones and we’re distracted and this and Billy is so like focused to whatever he is that task that person whatever it is and uh I don’t know like I said I miss him i I you know he he he might be he might be my favorite person and I know we’re supposed to be objective doing this job right of course you but you’re going to be skewed by the people you meet along the way and I’m not saying like I’m rooting for the Bulls because of Billy Donovan or anything like that but um he might be my favorite person maybe I’ve ever met doing this job whether it comes to to you know again I’ve covered you know Red Sox I’ve covered um hockey i’ve covered a little bit Patriots you name it I’ve covered it obviously college basketball and uh but yeah I love Billy i I again I I hope the Bulls get it going i hope he get you know they get him some more talent i hope they pick somebody um at 12 that can play and and really help him right away well to be the man Jeff you got to beat the man shout out to my man Jeff Goodman joining the show field of 68 is the podcast we really appreciate your time man thanks for coming on and don’t be a stranger you’re welcome anytime sir thanks for having me guys appreciate it hope all is well and uh stay cool out there my man appreciate it bro that is Jeff Goodman and that was absolutely We got to get Katie a short of the Ric Flair strut with him telling that story oh you know she I will get on i know you’re already on that immediately and he was so right about like the he said like Billy is super locked in yeah yeah that’s our conversation like that is so accurate and it’s one of the things you like about it too yeah like I’ll after like media and just like to peel back the curtain a little bit it’ll be like sometimes three or four reporters around like this screen that has like the Bulls logo on it and he’s at a uh he’s standing there with like a microphone in his face and we’re all just kind of like huddling around him sometimes it’s like a bunch of cameras and there’s like TV people and there’s 35 people but if you go up to him after like and I’ve had times where I’m like trying to ask a question or like follow up on something or like where’s this guy supposed to be in rotation or like what’s this guy’s first read in this Zoom action or whatever and he’ll just talk for like 10 minutes about it and like all of a sudden you’re just like breaking down all this stuff and he’s just like locked in with you it’s it’s really cool i think that’s why players really gravitate towards him like you hear the players coach thing yeah um but he really is just like a great connector of people and I I really respect that about him no it’s very true when we were down there the first year for summer league I saw it in action there i was very close to him watching him speak to the younger players everybody kind of coming up it’s like his best friend from that he hasn’t seen in 15 years you know and then when we met him at the airport and I went up to him and just started talking he and I you know just in that conversation for that moment you know what I’m saying at the baggage claim so yeah absolutely right about that um very cool stories from uh Jeff Fischer knowing he’s doing some wrestling stuff you know that’s near and dear to the heart right there and my favorite wrestler and Ric Flair can’t go wrong billy Donovan just went up a little bit just a little bit just a little bit of my book sir but he’s right he needs some help hopefully the Bulls can get it in this draft uh let’s take a quick look um at these mock drafts this is GOAT day and gold is all about these mock drafts life baby so let’s get into it a little bit espn’s latest mock draft i got Gavon and I got Woo has Casperis Yakatonis going to the Chicago Bulls at number 12 will the god leap how do you feel about the young man out of Illinois being a Chicago Bull pretty surprising um I’m pretty sure they’ve worked him out and gotten to talk to him a little bit and see um what he’s like but just in terms of fit like we’ve talked a lot about the crossover between best player available and fit and talent and like how those things need to like you need to find the right equilibrium to bring out the best talent in a guy so that he is the best player available yeah and that is done by having a good situation for him i just have a hard time believing that they’re gonna take another guard i just do and until a trade for Kobe or Lonzo or both or IO happens like I just don’t know and I so I think about it that way and then I think about okay well let’s say Kobe gets moved um not saying he should or shouldn’t but let’s say that happens and it’s and it’s Giddy and Yakoson as the back court like does that work and I think it could um I think he is a dynamic playmaker with the ball um very very good passer and I think you add like Kobe I think is a good passer yak Jonas I think is a very good passer so you add a little bit there um the step back three has been a work in progress it’s been something that has come and gone over the season but like if it hits you’re looking at a player who has similar attributes I think to Tyrese Hallebertton who can be a really high level passer run pick and roll but also play away from the ball be a very good shooter but also has some of those same limitations where the driving um the physicality around the rim leaves a little bit to be desired so I could see him fitting with Kobe or with Giddy maybe it’s a move there maybe it’s you want a really strong three guard lineup and you want all three of them and and they can all work together um at the end of the day I just feel like this team has a lot of needs and um and I think Yakonis isn’t going to be so much better than some of the other guys that are available at 12 to where he that should be the tiebreaker right like usually it’s like you know you factor in all these things and then what is the tiebreaker there maybe it’s you have a guy that fits or maybe it’s this guy’s just more talented um and so I just don’t see that being the tiebreaker there because the talent I don’t think would be higher than Queen or higher than some of these other guys who maybe also fit better yeah and I I would say the defense also having a back court that isn’t great defensively we already saw that you know and I don’t want to continue to add to that uh on this team man but I have no problem with I think he can play i think he can definitely be a piece on a squad man like his size and his shooting and his creativity I think will come to fruition for sure in the NBA because he’s not scared at all and that’s one of the things I always liked about him he’s not scared of any moment or anybody on that floor so yeah but for the Bulls I I would say no uh Ricky O’Donnell has changed cuz last time Ricky O’Donnell had Noah essing to the Bulls at 12 his new mock draft has the Bulls taking Colin Murray Boils ladies and gentlemen there you see him right there of course that phys physicality and that defense that that young man has but that shooting is definitely a weakness and as I told you goat when it’s a guy whose weakness is shooting but they’re still putting up solid numbers as far as scoring is concerned that’s always a plus to me yeah I’m a big fan of Murray Boils i wouldn’t say I’m like you know really ecstatic about him but like I think he’s probably the best fit in terms of like best talent available best fit uh solves a lot of the Bulls problems and has upside and I think he kind of ticks all those boxes for me in a way that probably nobody else does um so I really like him i like the fit i wonder if he’s going to be gone now the Houston Rockets now have the 10th pick and for me he is like the perfect fit there yeah and so I wonder if he’s off the board um because with him it’s like similar to Queen in some ways where you kind of want to have the right situation for him because you don’t want him to be floundering where he has to be a force spacer like if he’s playing with Luca Donuch and he’s got to be standing in the corner shooting threes like you’re not maximizing any of his skills you’re not letting him do any of the things that make him good um and so I would have a hard time imagining him in that context but with the Bulls I could see him really like thriving as the defensive quarterback and somebody who can help be like the guy who facilitates the offense is it because you know he kind of will have his own space to kind of be that defensive guy like the Bulls don’t really have that guy well they’ll need him to be they’ll need him to step in it’s not like we need you to be like the guy who guards the guards on this team because we’ve got other pieces it’s like they’re going to build their defense around this guy i think that’s how and so I I think it’d be a great fit i do wonder if he’ll be on the board anymore um but certainly someone who I could see being there and also really you know having a great career again I I agree with Jeff though he’s he’s not a star player but he’s a a very good piece uh there was another writer who I don’t know how they got in here will the goat Got Lob uh is going to go ahead sounds fake yeah it’s a madeup name clearly clearly fade up name yeah the good old Gotlob my guy has uh Derek Queen mock to the Chicago Bulls uh something I love to hear uh definitely like that young man think he’s definitely has real real skill and super talent um in in how you just said go about Colin Murray Boles uh kind of not being there uh I have that same fear for a guy like Derek Queen uh Jeff Goodman i mentioned the same thing about him not being there but if he’s there I mean for me it’s a no-brainer if my man Cedric Coward isn’t there then I’m taking Derek Queen this is kind of a weird take but I almost hope he’s not there because I I feel like the it would be too hard for me to pass up and I’m just not sold on him okay for the Bulls I think if you put him in Washington or San Antonio he’s going to be a stud because he can do anything the Bulls don’t have Victor Wenyama that can like clean up the mess and space the floor they don’t have Alexar who can do a lot of those same things obviously not at the same level um so I just have a hard time seeing him being his most successful um but I agree like there’s just too much talent there to pass up at 12 if he’s there and that’s kind of why I went with this pick in our latest mock draft i feel like he fits more with the dribble pass shoot skill set that the Bulls are looking for in a five and I think you could see him being successful in the Bulls fast-paced offense i think he just also has some big question marks that you’re just going to have to solve in other ways and that’s okay but like that is true yeah no this is true i like him he’s number two on my board i I think he’s awesome uh our guy Sam Vini has got another pick here at number 12 for the Bulls carter Bryant um I’m curious as your thoughts on Carter Bryant we haven’t really talked a ton about him but I also saw uh your guy Keandre Ashley had Carter Bryant as a Bulls as a guy the Bulls should be looking at to take at number 12 the more I watched on his video the more I was pretty impressed with this young man that he could turn into something that has tools to do pretty much everything on the floor yeah i think there’s a lot of guys that come into the draft that it’s like 66 wing who can be a really good 3 and D or 69 610 can’t really switch onto the perimeter but like still gives you good floor spacing and you know can be a good defensive player but just not quite as versatile there’s not a lot of guys that are like true 68 true elite athlete and true elite shooter and can guard one through four at a high level and I think Carter Bryant can do all those things so I think he really is like a like I’m trying to think of another guy like that in the league but it’s like Muel Bridges he’s bigger than Muel Bridges sure um he’s more versatile and switchable than a Cam Johnson or than a Rashir Fleming or just like guys like that who SNK who are kind of more fours so I think his versatility is really special and unique um he talked at the combine about finding ways to play more with the ball in his hands to create more i don’t know if I see that um he’s certainly young enough to where you could develop it but like I don’t expect that from him early on but if you can get more of it uh I think that’s great but even just being an elite 3 and D wing with that kind of size and versatility I think is a real uh value ad for the Bulls even if I don’t think there’s a ton of upside there in terms of like star equity yeah he’s somebody the Bulls should be actually looking at on on the board i think he could also very very easily be a top 10 pick yeah oh it’s a lot to get into more man nba draft happening tomorrow 7:00 p.m is the start time ladies and gentlemen come join us right here cgo Bulls
