kazzy russell was born in chicago he joined michigan and helped bill bunton take the wolverines to three straight big 10 titles and two final fours after winning the national player of the year award in 1966 russell was off to the nba the knicks picked him first overall that year russell spent most of his five years with the knicks as their six-man scoring big points off the bench and helping the team win a title in 1970 however just as he was starting to take off he missed a big chunk of time with injuries that led to a trade to the warriors he dropped 21 points five boards and three assists to make the all-star team russell continued to score well for two more years before signing with the lakers for the 1975 season he played a few more solid years in la and one injury-filled season in chicago before retiring in 1978 russell started a long coaching career as of 2025 he’s still coaching as an assistant for the flaggler university women’s
