second apron with more moves expected to come for Boston all right was this a good move for the Celtics winding it was a necessary move ok because they were looking at having a $500 million payroll this year with luxury taxes and that’s just not a responsible thing to do um if you don’t think your team’s got a great chance to win the championship and and we’ll see what happens with Tatam but right now they can’t count on him so they have to make some moves and if you look at their roster even though Drew Holiday remains an incredibly valuable player he is 35 years old and he has three years and $ million left on his contract and so there were teams that I talked to because there were four or five teams that were making offers for du holiday he was very desired in the market but there were teams that I talked to this week who thought for the Celtics to get off of Drew Holiday they might have to incentivize in the contract not because of the player he is now but because of the three years he’s got left on that deal especially the last year that deal which is a player option at age when he’s going to be 37 years old and so for the Celtics to get Simons who is a three-po specialist now he doesn’t fit with their defensive mantra he is not an accomplished defensive player however he is definitely a fire a fire starter on offense and he puts up threes at high volume so Jo is going to like that that is a player who will help them this year but the problem is here not the problem but the reality is this is just the first move yeah they are now still several like 15 million over the second apron they want to be under that so they’re going to make moves and I would watch again you’re not touching Jason Tatam you don’t want to touch Derek White and you really don’t want to touch Jayen Brown so those other guys and I would put on the firing line so to speak Chris Sport Porzingus not because they don’t like him but because he’s only got one year left on his contract anyway you can’t trust him he’s always hurt well that’s a factor so I I think that this is the beginning of the Celtics taking apart the team that won the championship year the other thing that I think we got to take into consideration about the Boston Celtics is that it’s going to be pretty difficult to do something with because it’s one thing to be injured he’s been ill and they don’t know why like there’s been legitimate questions for the B like we can’t figure out what’s wrong with him he has said he can’t figure out molly literally he’s been in a locker room he’s been he’s had a practice or he’s had a game and he’s lamented the level of fatigue that he was feeling and has no clue as to why that is they have not been able to figure it out access to the best doctors i’m just saying you know to me listen I I will tell you something right now i ain’t going to make no recommendations whatever but you know a noted biologist Gary Breer helped to help save my life i’m just telling you i mean you got to find out something you really really got to find out something figure out what the hell is going on because the scarest thing in the world is when you don’t know when you have a definitive diagnosis and ok here’s what it is to alleviate that concern that’s entirely different when you don’t know and you’re a professional athlete and you’re playing for a multibillion organization you got owners who are billionair you’ve got all the resources available to you and they say we can’t figure out what’s wrong that is some scary stuff so I wish I wish I wish nothing but the best figure that out but if I’m a team I’m not trading for somebody that I can’t figure out what his is oh no no no that’s a different problem allog now with this move Boston saved about 40 million in luxury tax dollars so that’s a plus they’re going to need to make more moves Kei i get that part but the bottom line is you saved about 40 million and then let’s let’s look at Anthony Simon for a second this is a career 38.3% threep shooter the brother’s not a scrub now defense is not his thing but offense certainly is over the last three years he’s averaged about 20 he’s shoot he’s averaged nearly 93 point attempts per game okay he’s made about 38% of those shots the brother can play he can play and he is entering the expiring year of his contract so he’s highly motivated and oh by the way even though they’re not going to be a championship contender in the eyes of many because Jason Tatam is out you still have Jayen Brown there you still have an exceptional executive in Brad Stevens there you still have a championship pedigree because the Boston Celtics just won a championship last year and they’re one of the most story franchising basketball anals it’s between them and a Los Angeles Lakers so all of those things help because him playing for on an expiring deal playing for the Boston Celt this ain’t the po trail places it’s Boston and so being in Boston if you show up and you produce he’s in a position where it could do tremendously for his do tremendously well for his career i think he sees that i think Boston sees that which is why they went and grabbed him all right we’re going to push it forward here guys uh with Katie and Aaron Rogers on new teams which veteran superstar wins of change are blowing through the league so who better than the windman here to break it down with Bobby and company let’s go while you were sleeping a very consequential trade in the NBA the Boston Celtics have begun what we expect to be a dismantling of their championship team by sending Drew Holiday to Portland for Anthony Simons and two second round draft picks simons joins Boston on an expiring contract holiday meanwhile is 35 years old he’s owed $72 million across the next two seasons so let’s start with what this means how should one interpret the trade of Drew Holiday to Portland well Anthony Simons is 9 years younger and he is a offensive three-point specialist i do think that there will be some things that the Celtics fans will like about him but let’s be clear the impetus for this trade was to save money which Bobby can articulate the exact reasons and this is just the beginning with Jason Tatem likely to miss most of it not all of next season boston is not in the stance where they want to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in luxury tax penalties they’re going to have to make several moves to save money and take a step backwards there will be more this week i would keep an eye on Chris Porzingus especially chris SPingus an interesting one and a few of their other stars that we’ll get you in a minute bobby get as as granular as we can what are we talking about money was multistep try to get below the second apron there were $22 million um above it this gets them to 18 there’s going to be another move to shed salary they were facing $500 million in projected payroll i I expect that to be half when we get through the next couple weeks here so so what are these por Zingus would he do it what what else will get him porzingus $30 million would do it i think you if you cobble together Sam Houser and some other contract Sam’s at 10 but I do think you have to thread the needle of shedding money resetting the roster but also have something competitive when Jason Tatem returns next year from that injury so so that’s really the question here because as as great a player as Porzingus is when he’s healthy there are all the injury concerns but Mark Keith Morris we’re talking about two guys in Derek White who was really emerged as a true NBA star and then Jayen Brown who was a superstar if you were the Celtics would those guys be untouchable would you consider trading either of them in this circumstance how do you see it i I would make those guys untouchable right because it’s just a oneyear balance in between the the what you want to do for the next year when Jason Tam come back so if I have at least those two guys I can build around and bringing Anthony Simons like Wendy said that a threep shooter that you get a great look at for one year to see if he would fit with the JT and the JB so yeah I would keep I would keep Derek around because he’s a great defensive player he’s a type of guy that’s low maintenance that you don’t really you know can fit with any type of team you need those type of guys on your team so and that with that aspect like I said earlier I will let JB grow into that number one that number one position and just you know have a good year and just really build on being contenders when Jason Tam come back now the fall of 2026 is so far away like in the world in which we live today that feels like an eternity away so the idea that are we’re going to keep things in place so that they’ll be ready for Tam when he comes back in in whatever that rounds to now 14 16 months that feels like a a dicey game to play this is the story of the NBA offseason the Western Conference teams in an all-out arms race we see Houston getting Durant we see Portland who is still a borderline play-in team trying to staff up we’re going to see the Lakers try to make moves maybe Denver try to make moves and in the Eastern Conference you have these contenders like Boston potentially Indiana potentially Milwaukee reevaluating their situation because their star players are facing missing next season with the Kill Stendant you know I mean again I I bring this analogy up one more time in 1993 in the summer of 93 Michael Jordan retired for the first time and those of us covering that team thought well there go the Bulls chances and the next thing I know Scotty Pippen had one of the great seasons in the league i still don’t believe he wasn’t MVP that year he should have been they took the Nick Ses in the playoffs and had a very questionable call go against them otherwise they may have been in the finals against the Rockets so you never really know what up happened no we don’t and and I think we’re going to see resets potentially in Indiana and certainly in Boston and then who’s going to be left standing as far as who’s going to be that Eastern Conference i do think it is extremely interesting that the Western Conference teams are looking at the east and saying “OK who can I pick off on these rosters to come join us?” Portland is an extremely aggressive move team that won 36 games and now go out and trade for a 35yeold player a terrific player in Drew Holiday who has a ton of money left2 million after the next season portland should move to the east and they might have a real chance
