got some breaking news as Daniel Gaffford and the Mavericks have agreed to a three-year contract extension welcome into Mavericks today by chat sports jeffrey Cooperstein here with you guys and I got to be honest I went and sat down for dinner with an old friend and I got the notification from Sham Chirania that Gaffford had agreed to an extension with the Mavericks and I was pretty shocked by that i did not think this was going to be something that the Mavericks were looking at this off seasonason i thought Gaffford was going to be a potential trade target i thought that they were going to play this year out and he would hit unrestricted free agency but as it turns out the Mavericks and Gaffford come to an agreement to keep him in Dallas through the 2028 29 season and this is just another sign that the Mavericks want to be big and they want to be physical you now have Derek Lively and Daniel Gaffford locked in for at least the next three seasons and with the center rotation alongside Anthony Davis who has three years left on his contract so the Mavericks are fully leaning into being the biggest team in the NBA and Daniel Gadford absolutely has played some of his best ball with uh the Mavericks in both the starting and a bench roll sorry I’m just making sure that there’s no updates coming out here and it feels like that the Mavericks thought this was going to be a priority for them this off season to try to get as big and as physical and as versatile as possible which is the reasoning behind the Luca Donic trade whether you like it or not pair him up with Cooper Flag and if Gaffford either starts or comes off the bench you know he’s going to play about 24 to 25 minutes a night anyways and the Mavericks thought that hey he’s playing the best ball of his career with us centers are at an absolute premium right now here in the NBA and so why not give him a three-year $60 million extension or $54 million extension excuse me it was originally reported that it was going to be 60 million mark Stein came out and said it’s 3 for 54 so that’s the number we are going to roll with um Gaffford wanted starter money on his next contract that was the report all throughout the season that that’s what he wanted and the Mavericks gave it to him so Daniel Gaffford a three-year $54 million contract extension grade the extension for me in the comment section a restriction for Daniel Gaffford so he’ll be able to be traded immediately so his $18 million a year salary could be something that the Mavericks look to move it could be used as a trade chip now he there was still talk that he was going to be a trade chip before the extension now after the extension he’s still going to have value because he’ll have a three-year deal locked in at $18 million a year and with the NBA cap going up each season like it’s projected to Gaffford’s contract is going to look really good in a year and a half for two seasons so I do think this was a good bit of business by Nico Harrison in the Mavericks front office i really like that Gaffford is going to be staying here in Dallas for the foreseeable future i I’m just surprised that this is the route that both Gaffford and the Mavericks wanted to go but I guess when from the Daniel Gaffford side of things he’s thinking like look I I like it here i’m playing a lot of good ball here there’s a good center rotation here so he’s not going to be overly relied on he has Derrick Lively he has Anthony Davis in case of emergency they are going to have Dwight Pal who picked up his option for the 2526 season at 4 million bucks and Gaffford can either start or come off the bench he can be a versatile chess piece for Jason Kidd to use in however he wants him so from Gaffford’s side I get wanting to stay in Dallas but I also thought he might want to test the market after what I think was going to be another solid season from Daniel Gaffford whether it was in Dallas or somewhere else had they traded him we know that teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and other teams are desperately looking for center help and Gaffford was a guy that was rumored to be a potential Lakers trade target to go pair back up with Luconic in LA because of their chemistry and Gaffford’s ability to run the rim in the pick and roll but the Mavericks are going to keep him and it feels like he could be used as an even more valuable trade chip if they go that route but at the at for the time being I really believe that Gaffford’s highest value is right here in Dallas with the Mavericks i think this is a good deal all around the Mavericks are going to you know they have their big men locked up now with Anthony Davis for the next three years Gaffford for the next four seasons and then Lively for who knows how long he’s heading into his third year of his rookie contract they could give him a rookie extension after next season as well so the Mavericks are in a good spot when it comes to their center position which is something that we could rarely say around the Dallas Mavericks it’s usually oh they find Tyson Chandler for a year oh he walks and they are always finding stop gaps and trying to plug and play guys the Mavericks started Bo Bob Boon Mariano in a game seven in the NBA playoffs that’s how dire things were and now they’ve swung the complete opposite way where they’ve got probably the best center depth in the NBA if you consider Anthony Davis as center which I know the Mavericks don’t but I personally do um and they look this is what the Mavericks wanted to lean into they wanted to lean into defense they wanted to lean into versatility and that’s what the Mavericks are going to be with Cooper Flag on this team they’re going to have defensive versatility like you’ve never seen they’re going to be extremely extremely long now the question is we were talking about um Gaffford and Washington as both potential trade targets for other teams to go out and trade what does this mean for PJ Washington does that further put him on the trade block will the Mavericks be willing to listen to offers for Washington we know it was reported by Mark Stein a couple of days ago that the Mavericks would like to keep both of them well they’re going to keep Gaffford by all accounts so Washington is up next will the Mavs end up getting an extension done with Washington will he play the year out will Washington end up being a part of a trade going forward i do think there are questions surrounding his future now that the Gaffford’s future is secure for at least the next four seasons in Dallas and of course Gafford can be traded like I said there is no six-month trade restriction so the Mavs theoretically could trade him tomorrow if they wanted to um I don’t think that’s going to be the case but they could but I do think this opens up the possibility of PJ Washington being traded further and I talked earlier on our second video of the day about how Cooper Flag could possibly play the two next to PJ Washington at the three with AD at the four and Lively and Gaffford at the five if the Mavs did keep Washington and in my opinion that’s the vision that Nico Harrison has set out for this team so it’s entirely possible that that’s the route that they end up going um and keeping Washington and they’re just going to add on the fringes here are they will they resign Dante Exom will they go out and sign a Chris Paul or a Malcolm Brogden or trade for a Colin Ston i think all of those are somewhat on the table but as of right now I would say that they’re more than likely going to keep PJ Washington and both Washington and Gaffford will be on this roster next season which again I’m pretty surprised about that i got to be honest I didn’t see this extension coming i really wasn’t even thinking about it as a possibility for this year but Gaffford wanted it the Mavs wanted to get it done and so it got done daniel Gaffford contract extension 3 years $54 million takes him through the 2028 29 season here with the Dallas Mavericks a good bit of business by both the Mavs and Nico Harrison uh they keep they secure their center rotation for the future of course if anything happens
