Uh caught me especially offguard here I’m over at our Half Street Studios in DC I was about to work a producer shift here about 2 hours from now But we got to hop on for this emergency pod because this is big news for the Wizards going forward especially and and this is tough for us too especially because we are guys that were super high on the future of Jordan Pool here and we thought maybe he’d be a guy that if he is moved he’s moved around draft night uh for the proponent of moving up at some point in this draft But this is really interesting because it shows what direction this Wizards front office wants to go to Maybe shows how they feel about Jordan Pool long term They’re able to essentially move him here along with Sadi Bay and then you you give up the 40th pick as well You get CJ McCollum and Kelly Olen But the point I want to make here with why this move makes more sense than a lot of people realize in my opinion Why people maybe shouldn’t be so up in arms about the entire thing is that you’re getting rid of guys that have two years left on their deal at this point You get Olen and McCllum both will be on expiring deals this year Middleton who picked up his option He’ll be on expiring deal You’re going to have three guys that are getting off your books after next season That’s $76 million gone from your cap The Wizards are projected to have over $100 million in cap space next offseason The goal for the Wizards next year was not to win They need to be lottery bound again They need to be in the top eight in order to keep their first round pick and even have a chance to utilize a pick swap with the Phoenix Suns But another thing that you’re thinking about here with guys like McCollum Middleton and Olen if those guys are serviceable veterans for you and there is interest for them in the trade market the Wizards are potentially going to be able to stack up even more assets at this point because I’m not even really concerned about the salary cap uh being a thing because I think the Wizards are going to go all in on someone in offseason from now They’re not going to be ready for that I I think they’re still going to be at least a year or two away from uh potentially going after somebody big in free agency with this cap space but you’re now giving yourself the flexibility to use these expiring contracts to acquire even more assets than the Wizards already have I mean this is what Will Dawkins plan has been the entire time is to stack up the assets however possible So that’s why I’m initially I’m not going to overreact to it It’s tough to see a guy like Jordan Pool go uh he did look like a vocal leader in a locker room and putting his locker next to Bub Carrington but also Bub Carrington’s development is going to be a big part of this because if you have Jordan Pool on the floor for 30 minutes tonight that’s taking away opportunities for Bob Carrington to have the ball in his hands because the Wizards ultimately you know in the second year with this uh core of Bob Carrington Alex Sar Keshan George and then third year of Bal Kulabali you have to start making decisions on people for your future You need to see what you have when these guys are given the fair opportunity to be starting players in the NBA be ball dominant players and I think that’s exactly what they’re feeling with Bob Carrington I think they’re very high on Bob Carrington and they want to see him be the lead ball handler for this team Yeah I hear you Ben But it’s just man I I I love Jordan Pul The from day one to where he when he got traded to now clearly got better last year’s averages of points rebounds assists as a leader just all increased and all got better There was he he was just growing on me as a player here in DC and it just sucks because I wanted him to be that point guard here to win the Wizards host that Larry O’Brien trophy But I don’t know Ben the fact that you don’t get any first round picks and I’m not comparing Jordan Pool to Desmond Bane or Mikuel Bridges or when Muel Bridges gets five first round picks Desmond Bane gets I think four But you couldn’t get one And I get You’re getting rid of expiring contracts free up cap space But but to be real Ben is there any superstars willing to come here in DC Not because we just suck but it’s just because we’re so young here And it’s just I’m I’m in I’m in shock right now because I thought you’re going to use pick 40 and Jordan Pool to trade up or even get another first round pick And right now at six like you better win Trey Johnson or Ace Bailey Now you need a superstar because now you don’t have Jordan Pool on this team anymore Who’s going to create a shot for themselves I love Bob Carrington but he’s a young guy I love Khan George I love Alex There are a lot of young guys You get CJ McCome Chris Middleton but do you flip them How much is their trade value Now you have Kelly Olen Kelly Ubé’s best friend If you know you know It’s just I’m in I’m I’m I’m in awe right now When I saw that I was I was frustrated You explained that I kind of like sat down and it’s just at the end of the day I thought you could have got more Does that goes to show that the Pelicans were the only team that wanted Jordan P the fact that you didn’t get any draft capital at all and you also let go of pick 40 to me it’s just it just harms me a little bit I’m just I’m not as quick to judge these kind of moves without the long-term approach going through here because this is obviously a move that’s being made by this front office thinking about long term because we’re we’re not we’re not thinking about this year for the Wizards The only thing we’re thinking about is players developing and and making sure that we have a first round draft pick next year We’re also of course thinking about the two talented players we’re going to get on this roster tomorrow night So you know making these moves right now unless you were really convinced that Jordan P was going to be here for the long run two years left on his deal Sadique Bay two years on his deal as well Unless you were convinced those guys were going to be part of the core long term And clearly we we’ve seen what Will Dawkins in the front office think about those guys long term they don’t see them as part of that future at this point you kind of will just have to accept where they go from there If the Wizards are able to turn some of these guys here whether it’s Middleton Olen or McCollum at some point I don’t know because you know these are aging players The the money is a lot worse for Middleton $33.3 million per year Um Marcus Smart also another aging veteran on this team that’s on a bad contract I don’t know if these guys will be moved at some point at the trade deadline in order to acquire assets But that might be exactly what Will Dawkins and them are hoping for right here And then of course you are going to free up the capace I’m not even worried about the idea that nobody wants to play in Washington that nobody’s going to sign here because I I can’t think that far in the future right now I I just can’t This team is too far away to be worried about those kind of moves And I think this is also showing from Dawkins and Co that they feel like they are not ready they aren’t ready to take the next step And of course you have to be bad this year That’s just part of the thing You want to see your guys develop but you still have to be have that top eight protected pick And I think it’s just really a move that’s going to be made toward going in the future I know it’s tough because we’ve talked about patience Patience And this is another trade right here from Will Dawkins where we’re going to have to see the patience come into fruition Remember when Bradley Beal got traded everyone was like we didn’t even get a first round pick but now we have the pick swap uh potentially to be used with the Phoenix Suns who are on the downturn A lot of these moves are being made thinking about what’s happening down the road a year from now two years from now And it’s just tough for me to really give a bold and tough reaction to this I I just I do have reservations with the idea of getting rid of of Jordan Pool in this point because of what he meant to a lot of the young players on this team But you have to hope that the guys that you’re bringing in here are going to buy into this young culture are going to be able to be part of the development of the young core because that’s all that matters for this upcoming season I mean it just sucks that this happens right before the draft We should be we should be talking about the draft right now We should be talking about two talented players Are we getting Bailey Are we getting Trey Johnson I don’t know And now we have We’re talking about this right now but this is this is what happens man This is this is Wizards basketball for you And again Ben I’m repeating myself but not one first round pick Bro we were talking about one to two potentially and then you eventually trade him off for salary dump I’m sorry man I love Will Dawkins I’ve been defending this man from day one He was getting a lot of hate for how he dealt with the Kyle Kousman situation the Tyus Jones situation Chris Chris Porzingis But we’re going to look back on this and it’s just the the value I I don’t know man Like I I really thought we can get a first round pick another especially this draft cuz there’s a lot of talented guys and and next year’s draft 226 AJ Deonta Native Med Darren Peterson It’s just I really hope I’m wrong here and down the line this was the right trade But as of right now Ben like I don’t want to say the Wizards got fleece but it just it hurts me a little bit that you couldn’t get a first round pick out of it I mean am I crazy for thinking that No I I understand that And especially considering after the Desmond Bane trade he goes for four unprotected first round picks We think to ourselves well Bull’s getting at least two first He’s commanding that But I don’t know maybe that wasn’t in the cards because we know the Wizards have been active on the phones trying to seek a trade in this draft where they’re trading up for 18 or trading up from 18 excuse me or trading up from six They’ve been active in talking to teams and maybe they gauged that the value for pool that we expected wasn’t actually the case I don’t know We we know we obviously aren’t there We’re not part of those conversations But for right now I’m trying my best to stay optimistic and and look big picture here I think that’s important But I do understand your frustration and I’m going to understand the frustration from Wizards fans because it just feels like we’re that organization where you know players go to die essentially because we’re picking up aging veterans on expiring deals I’m not looking at it that way but I understand the people that are Yeah it’s I’m just I’m in shock Ben I mean last year Dawkins traded Denny Aia on draft night That was unexpected Jordan P traded that was a possibility but I thought the value would be way more and hoping down the line that I’m wrong in saying that we the Wizards didn’t get fleece But as of right now it just sucks that you give away Jordan P A guy who’s not even 26 years old yet a guy who’s not even at his prime I really hope um this is just a nation’s capital I’m here with the great Ben Stroer I’m Abdullahubi Ben what do the Wizards do from now Draft day is tomorrow Well I mean I I would love to just turn the attention right now to the NBA draft And obviously we we don’t have the 40th pick anymore in this draft And I think that’s something that we expected to be traded anyway whether that was moving up from 18 or moving up from six That still remains to be seen And there’s still so much smoke now about Ace Bailey And a lot of people are concerned about him because of who his agent is now with the reports coming out uh about the past of his agent Share Cooper’s dad And I I just I don’t even know I don’t even know what to think about all that But I’m not really worried I’m not really willing to be worried about a player because of his agent We need a superstar player And especially you just get rid of Jordan Pool this opens the door for a guy like Ace Bailey if you do draft him to become one of your ball dominant players one of your lead scorers and have him develop Also Trey Johnson that becomes the possibility because ESPN’s mock draft yesterday has Bailey and Johnson being available for the Wizard at 6 They might not even have to make a move to trade up right now I mean I just wanted to gauge your temperature right here Gauge the fan base temperature I think you and I discussed it yesterday We’ve been so high on Trey Johnson but I just I don’t think you can afford to pass on Ace Bailey if he’s there I just think he’s too talented He’s probably the third best player maybe even the second You could make the argument in terms of just being a pure scorer being an absolute alien with the basketball This is a guy that could be the second pick in the draft However things just haven’t gone that way because look he’s ducked Philadelphia that’s for sure But why would he want to go to Philadelphia That doesn’t make he wouldn’t even start there which is the thing for him He wants to go somewhere And we found out that the Wizards are actually one of his preferred destinations And I think you have to utilize that We don’t get to say that too often that the Wizards are a preferred destination for someone We saw it with Alex Sar and now we’re seeing it with another draft prospect We have why we have to keep looking forward And I think if the Wizards have the opportunity to get Ace Bailey tomorrow whether they have to trade up to get him or he is there at six you get him That That’s my final take on it right now I’d love to see Ace Bailey holding a Wizards jersey tomorrow night Yeah And if you’re Ace Bailey’s team and you had the idea that Jordan P might be gone opened up the window for Ace now it’s it’s there If Ace Bailey right now is licking his chops looking at pick six I think that’s where he wants to go And I saw reports saying that DC was already his number one destination before the Jordan pool trade And for me Ben you have to come out with Ace Baylor Trey Johnson after this trade You just need someone to be a leading scoreer on this team And I get you have Bob Carrington I think this is going to help his development But a guy like Ace at six right now if he’s available I’m I I I right now it’s 1 A 1B for me But right now the the gap increase just because of this trade because Ace Bailey is that guy that can take those shots and here in Washington you need someone to step up like like I mentioned early on in the podcast in today’s podcast we don’t have anyone that’s a shot creator anymore And we saw last year when Jordan P was out of the lineup with injuries and whatnot we just couldn’t create a shot We couldn’t score as much as we could have with him on the floor But now with the possibility of landing Ace Bailey that’s going to help But at the end of the day it I’ll to say it right now Ben if we don’t if we don’t get either Ace or Trey I’ll be frustrated especially after this trade Well I’ll I’ll look at it two ways I and I understand that I think absolutely you you want to ideally come away with Trey or Ace at some point in this draft and you probably wouldn’t even be entertaining the idea of Jeremiah fears right here But we’ve heard a lot about the Wizards being high in him Have worked him out multiple times And I don’t know how this is going to change Maybe the Wizards plans at 18 if they do trade up or or what their plan be for that because you are freeing up an an entire spot here for a guard player whether it’s Johnson or you have Bailey who kind of serves as like a hybrid player at this point at 6’8 but he’s got skills off the ball and of course skills as a shooter Um so it’s tough but at this point you don’t have Jordan P on the floor anymore you know eating up minutes eating up potential shots for a guy that would be like Bob Carrington or if you do get a guy like Trey Johnson Because I think maybe this also indicates how you know certain the Wizards could be at going after Trey Johnson Because if you if you I mean if you take away pool here and supplement him with Johnson I think that makes a lot of sense to me here because you know you’re giving him the ability to try to tap into his offensive potential early into his career But the Wizards also have to make a decision on Bub Carrington as I’ve alluded to This is an opportunity for them to really evaluate how they feel about him I think they are very high on him I I’ve got a quote right here actually from David Aldridge just went on the uh Grant Danny show to kind of discuss what just went down and he said you can’t have Jordan Pool stopping up 30 minutes a game If Bob Carrington’s your guy you’ve got to give him the ball and see what he can do as your lead point guard for the foreseeable future And I tend to agree with that right now Now I think DA brings up a really good point at at this point in the throughout this process because you know you have to make decisions on guy you’re going you’re going into the third year of Bal Koulabali and by the time you are ready to be competitive which is still two years away you’re going to have to either pay players you’re going to have to make decisions on maybe you know who you’re going to sign in free agency if somebody gets traded to acquire an allar all-star player this is just how it goes and I think this move was done with that in Yeah And I get it NBA is a business But man JP was growing on me Ben And for anyone listening out there the hat the amount the amount of hate that this man was getting after his first year I mean it was warranted I mean the shots that he was taking it was just the inefficiency But he Coach Kee humbled him went to that six-man role And I think if the Wizards were somewhat not that bad last year with those numbers that he had was borderline all-star but at the end of the day NBA is all about winning And Jordan Pool is officially a New Orleans Pelican and he’s there with Zion Williamson Brandon Ingram To me Ben I’m sorry I know it’s this next segment that we’re going to talk about but just no first round picks man It’s just I’m in awe right now I really thought that if we trade Jordan JP 13 that it opens up the idea of getting another lottery pick I mean we brought up the fact that maybe Houston at 10 before the Kevin Durant trade that’s a a draft pick that you can get and you can send him off to the Rockets but h it’s just a lot of everyone I mean right now everyone in the chat I I see a lot of people saying um we lost a trade or a lot I’ve seen very few saying that we won So we’ll just have to see come due time how this is Before we talk back to Lockdown Wizards I’m Abdullahi That’s Ben Schrobert talking about JP13 no longer being here in Washington I keep saying it Ben I’m shocked that you don’t get a first round pick I I sound like a broken record here but man this sucks Uh I’m just I don’t know I’m just used to I’m used to stuff like that like this is how the Wizards have operated under a new regime You’re going to get guys that you’re going to fall in love with for a short period of time and quickly they’ll they’ll be on the move because that’s what happens when you’re in a rebuilding state You know you get guys that will fit into whatever part of your timeline you’re in because when you start a rebuild you’re essentially on a five-year timeline really And I guess Jordan Pool really only fit two years of it And I think they were able to get a lot out of him One just you know bringing production bringing a veteran presence I really just I loved what he was able to do while he was here for the organization because he became such a favorably looked on guy in this locker room Put his locker next to Bob Carrington A guy that you know went through what he went through at the end of the year And Jordan Pul himself I have such high things to think about him as a person because he comes over here from Golden State after he gets punched in the face by Draymond Green I mean how do you think that affected him mentally as a basketball player Then you have a fan base trashing you because you get put into a brand new situation because somebody punched you in the face A terrible teammate hit you in the face after you win an NBA championship He comes over here and he completely changes his attitude He was able to as you mentioned be humbled He went to the bench and he turned up from there He became a leader in this locker room at despite being 24 years old at the time I know now he’s only 25 and it’s tough to think about it that you don’t even get a firstrounder for him considering we were talking about the proponent of him getting two first round picks in value at some point and it just whatever reason that was not meant to be but I think the Wizards still do have a plan going forward you I mean they’re not making this trade here with no plan in mind I know it’s going to be really tough a lot of people have been happy with Will Dawkins in terms of drafting so far but maybe not so happy with the trades But for me I’m already trying to move on here because we’re going to get two talented players in this draft tomorrow We might be getting a superstar player We could get Ace Bailey in this draft tomorrow So at this point Jordan Pool thank you for the memories Love you man Good luck in New Orleans but we got to move forward Never forget the game winner against Denver Jordan Pool see you later man Best of luck Yeah I got to look at it Yeah it’s a it’s a business man for me Yeah I know And that’s the thing with me like I’m a I always like I fall in love with these players especially with guys that uh like how they especially guy like JP who improved his how uh he was from day one to now I mean a lot of people wanted him out like I mentioned earlier and he got better He’s a Sorry dude I have people I have friends calling me about this Jordan pool trade and Oh my phone’s blowing up too Yeah sorry about that guys But um yeah this is it’s just it’s a lot Ben And I again I’m going to reiterate one more time Desmond Bane four unprotected unprotected first round picks Mikuel Bridges five first round picks The fact that you don’t get one and CJ McCullum Kelly Olen Sadique Bay who I thought when when he came back from injury he he could have been a really good contributor I was 15 20 points I’ve never saw him play here in DC So it’s this is a lot Ben and I I don’t I I just I don’t know I’m I’m hoping that this is again long and next year I don’t even know like this affects the win total I I made a short a couple or like last week where if you trade JP 13 the win total is going to shift for at least five to six games because again Jordan pool is a big reason why you were in a lot of those games last year and do you think I’m valid for that Yeah Well I you know this is part of the tank job The Wizards need to be losing games And I I know you’re probably not even winning enough games to really worry about that but it is a top eight pick And the only way you guarantee getting the top eight pick is finishing in the bottom four And if pool does continue to play at almost an all all-star level here in DC and then you see guys take a big leap in their second year whether it’s Bob Carrington or Alex Sar or Bal takes the next step in year number three I don’t know if this front office maybe sees that putting them in danger of risking their future in some way Uh it’s going to be interesting to hear Dawkins speak to the media Oh yeah he’s going to the first time because he’s definitely questions are going to be asked He’s going to get a lot of questions about this but I mean first got to turn the attention to the draft for for me If you go out there in tomorrow and you either get Ace Bailey or Trey Johnson part of this team and then you trade up from 18 and get a Kaman Malawatcher or Derrick Queen I’m I’m forgetting about all this person Oh heck yeah I agree Like that everything could change the entire public opinion about what the Wizards did could completely change o just over 24 hours from now That’s so that’s why I just I can’t overreact to this move Maybe if it doesn’t work out 6 months to a year from now then I can overreact Then I can go in on Dawkins and say that he made a huge mistake It’s just tough to look at You have to look at things bigger picture I think in the short term it’s so easy to overreact to a move like this to move a fan favorite and and feel like you don’t get the right return for him or what maybe the fans or what other people had valued for him But I I just can’t even think about that right now And if people disagree with me if people you know want to come from my head and say I don’t know what I’m talking about because they should have got more for Jordan Pool then that’s fine Everyone’s entitled to their opinion I’m trying to look forward I’m trying to look forward to when this team is legitimately able to start contending again And I I think this is all part of a process a five-year plan as I called it earlier Yeah it just it really does suck because it’s JP13 the man that we wanted We wanted the pool party to be long here in Washington but it has come to an end And um I’m a lot of people on social media Ben I don’t know if you’ve been seen but they’re just like “Wow not even a first round pick.” And a lot of people thought Jordan Pool would have been that guy here in DC I mean we saw him being that leader for a lot of these young guys And Will Dawkins I love Will Dawkins but this is going to be a move where he’s going to be asked a lot of questions and just better capitalize And like you mentioned if you can somehow manage if I already said this before the Jordan pull trade but if you can get Ace or Trey at six I love it But if you double down and trade into the lottery and get Derek Queen common Malawatch or some other guy I would freaking love that I’d honestly forget about this trade but if if after all of this and you somehow get stuck with Jeremiah Fierce I don’t want to say stuck with but I just I don’t know I don’t know Again I’m not trying to diss Jeremiah Fierce is probably going to be a really good NBA player after all the the things that I’ve said about me not being high on him which was just my luck But man the Pelicans now I think they have So it’s Jordan P Herb Jones Trey Murphy Zion Williamson Brandon That’s interesting Is Zion even gonna play I was gonna say Ben like I was waiting for like what if I don’t know I don’t even know what the hell is going on with him Yeah I thought he would be even if he was even if he wasn’t going through whatever trouble he’s in right now he he doesn’t play anyway He’s always hurt He’s always hurt Where do you see I know this is a Wizards podcast but how do you see JP 13 in the big uh New Orleans Uh it’s it’s tough to tell because New Orleans was was was terrible last year Like they they were bad with the guys that they had in place So I don’t really I don’t know enough about the New Orleans Pelicans And I know there’s there’s a New Orleans person that’s been watching and and talking in our chat So you know I’m not I’m not going to say I don’t really have an opinion on what’s going to happen in New Orleans next year but I mean they’re getting a talented player in pool and an intriguing piece in Sadique Bay So I I like the move for New Orleans if I have to
