Now that we’re just a day away, who will the Utah Jazz select in the NBA Draft?
pk you can go down the rabbit hole now and go through about 50 mock drafts and you can probably get about 35 or 40 different predictions of what the Jazz will do i’m at 47 right now an exaggeration there’s three more to go a group of six guys who are going three to eight but I got time and it’ll be one of those six but who will be off the board and who will be available?U Well we know Flag and Harbor will be off the board so put them aside uh then I think everybody else is in play for the Jazz now obviously two guys won’t be because he’ll be off the board and one of those two will be VJ Edgecom i think he could potentially be in play really yeah because it depends on what Philadelphia does and do they do they make a trade do they they’re more in win no win now mode than the others than Charlotte is and then the Jazz are and so do they it’s impossible to know because we don’t know who they’ll be trading with and what does that team have for their needs that they want to address so I yeah I think once you get past those two that the other whoever you whoever whomever else you want to put there could potentially be available i do think that you know what I’ve heard and this does not surprise me in the least i could have I could have predicted it i could have practically practically reported it the second that uh Austin was announced he’s not looking to play it safe man he wants to make his mark this is his chance this is something that he’s dreamed about for a long time and this is it and he wants to take a player who’s going to have a major impact that seems so duh i get that but you can go with a a player who’s a little safer i don’t think he’s going to play it safe i think he’s going to not That doesn’t mean he’s going to reach but he’s going to try to get somebody who is the most impactful even if it takes a couple of years as opposed to somebody who you know might be a little more proficient for whatever that’s worth i to me the wild card in this draft is Ace Bailey you know he doesn’t want to work out for this team he wants to go to these teams whatever uh does that cause teams to say “Hey wait a second.” So does he become available at five is he too good of a prospect for the Jazz to pass up at five and they simply have to do that and we’ve seen that he can only He can only fall so far yeah yeah I don’t think he’ll pull up there’s too much there’s too much talent right there’s this unpredictability about him and that is a red flag to some teams yeah uh I if he’s gone I think they go with fears because he is fearless that’s clever thank you you know who’s fearless is double A he’s fearless uh he’s he’s going to be cutthroat he’s I’m excited about his administration because he’s going to provide stories one way or another yeah he’s a baller in a executive sense i really believe that explain what that means well we know what baller means we do but in the executive sense yeah that he’s going to demand he excellence and he’s going to put in the time he’s going to do whatever he needs to do and he’s going to demand everybody around him to do that same thing or else there’s going to be a problem and he’s going to not to say that there will be a problem but they’re going to get on board and I I believe that he has you can analytical it to death but I also think you you have to know ball and you have to you have to see it you know I’ve talked about many times back when I would cover preps and whatever sport it was it take you about 15 minutes to realize okay that kid’s college material whatever sport you can see it i’ve used the example of Dan Coats they set me up to cover a playoff game at Weber i don’t know jack about high school sports in Utah right you saw Northridge hockey and you’re like well that guy I don’t even remember what school he played for Northridge and you guys know that uh and I watched him play who’s who’s this guy you know I know I know exactly what you’re talking about because I thought the same thing the first time I saw him and I think it was a state quarterfinal game and a ball came in over the top of his helmet and he stretched out for it made a fingertip grab stumbled stay on his feet and he’s already bigger and faster and you’re watching that and you’re like well that’s why everybody’s talking about him i mean right there who makes that play and I didn’t know anybody was talking about it that pass yeah i’d just been told and heard i had no idea but I had no They told me to go cover a game and I went up and covered cuz we we you know we needed bodies when I was working for the watchdog and fine I’ll go cover that game on that Friday night and I did so that’s the point and I think Austin is going to have that too and so he’s going to see and and and Coats ends up playing tight end they move him when he goes to Provo plays in the NFL blah blah blah success story obviously and it doesn’t take a big- time eye for talent at the high school level to see which kids stand out it then becomes more the higher you go the trickier it gets uh I believe and so he’s going to have to figure that out and I think they like fears is you know the proverbial upside type of thing and they may just think that he’s too good to pass up but Bailey could be available and we never know there’s always the the one year that they got exom you know you’ve talked about that uh some uh who Aaron Gordon jumped in and he wasn’t supposed to be and that it’s like a domino thing you you take out one and then everything else uh crumbles and not crumbles but changes and so I have no clue what the Charlotte Hornets are looking at and so that could change things dramatically and plus if there’s any type of transaction before that but I think if Bailey the the thing that will really be exciting for me is if Bailey and Fears are available and I think Fears will be available i’m not sure about Bailey but if both of them are available then what do you do i’ll be sitting on the edge of my seat i’m fired up for this draft i took a little mini vacation last week and I was driving home from Wyoming thinking okay what’s you know what we got the week ahead we got BYU Monday and so forth and then I started just metaphorically drooling about finally here we’ve been talking about it since December right and when you stink and have two first round picks that becomes so critical that is the number one way that they’re going to get back to where we all want them to be is through the draft and they’ve got six guys on board and they’re going to add at least two more and who’s it going to be and because we’ve known that they were going to stink and we knew that June 25th was coming seemed like it was forever and here we are we’ve followed these guys more at least I did to get a a better feel who are these guys who are the possibilities i think we all spent more time watching than we do whatever whatever amount of time you spent you spent more lock already spent a lot but Oh yeah we were talking about in December watching Joonus and I watched easily more Ruters basketball this year than ever because their games are on earlier it’s in the winter it’s dark by 5:00 right i might as well do some work if the Jazz aren’t back east if the Mammoth aren’t back east right it’s it’s wide open right and so I’d watch those guys play and we at that point we had no idea where they were going to draft so Dylan Harper was a possibility because we didn’t know we had no idea until the lottery came out where they would be selected turns out I probably shouldn’t have watched Dylan Harper that much you know what I mean well turns out you need to watch the other two guys for Duke yeah yeah you’re going to watch Duke naturally anyway because they’re always good and they’re putting them on TV a lot and and uh and all during the season you know there was a chance maybe they could get Cooper flag uh didn’t work out but now you got these other guys here and I’ve seen them all play several times it was easy to watch Edgecomb obviously and played in the conference but I but I and I have a wooden award vote so I try to hone in on the top guys and the wooden award does it for you they present the wooden award preseason mid-season and then the final list and they narrow it down uh to a more manageable thing so then you know by the time we get to mid-season I look who’s on the list and figuring okay I watch these guys the top guys and so here we go man and and and the fact that they hired Double A just fires me up even more because you knew him the story arc continues right yeah yeah i knew him since he was a punk kid i literally remember they must have had practice or media day and I at the Marriott Center and I’m down because I’m the beat writer at the time and I remember him walking through the tunnel uh first coming out on the fe on the court and people wanted to talk to him because hey you see that guy’s name up there and that’s your father yeah and uh and he was sensational in his own right at BYU and my goodness the guy plays Major League Baseball and in the NBA who the freak does that an unusual daily double who’s an all-American in four sports in high school right only because he didn’t have time for five we’ve heard about the football baseball combo right sure and there But who does baseball basketball correct and there are people who believe that Danny had he chosen football could have been a pro in football oh I don’t doubt that yeah but don’t choose football unless you have to yeah sure yeah but you’re right DJ that combo baseball and basketball is very common uh and golf this guy’s just natural and so here’s your son and plus he comes from an area where I knew very well i knew so many people who knew either had children at his high school or uh watched his games and I knew he was a feisty guy and all he’s like his dad in that way uh so adding him to the mix I I just I expect him to be some type of ground shaker not necessarily tomorrow night but in five years I believe we’re going to look back and we’re going to see it’s going to be okay this move this move this move this move was great this move was good this move sucked what are you thinking well because whoever you are you’re going to probably have the categories of all that’s what we’ve been doing for years so we’ve always been looking back five years about this worked that didn’t right that made sense at the time but it didn’t pay off that didn’t seem like it made any sense but my gosh it paid off i mean there’s always it’s all over the board yeah and I feel like I I know this guy i feel like I have a good feeling of what’s in his gut and he wants to make things happen and they all do i understand that but I just feel like I have that personal knowledge of this kid of having conversations with him over the years has been a long time since I’ve you know had a big time conversation with him but I don’t think he’s changed i think he still has that fire and and and plus too this franchise has got to get going man you’re gonna go into year four yes yeah you gotta get going it is go time and it’s all it it’s it’s not just that but it’s like you got to get going and you got to get somewhere near the top you start looking at the list of teams like who’s gone the longest without going Yeah to the conference finals well the Jazz are starting to get near the top of that list who’s gone the longest without getting to the NBA finals jazz are working their way up that list and so it’s time to have a really good team yes other people are doing it lots of other people are doing it the glory days are retreating in the rearview mirror so have some new have some new glory days right and you got new ownership everything about it screams we got to make some moves man we have got to move we got to get this going will he do something better will he do something really bold and take somebody who’s outside the six because the logic is there’s two we know one and we know two and then there’s a group and I think even inside the group like VJ Edgecomb is going to go in the first half of the group he’s in the group of six but he’s not really going seven or eight this is not happening right and Mish might move up a little bit but he’s not going three or four not going three or four no so these But I think he is moving up yeah I would say 67 maybe unless as Geter said if they have something that they think they can pull off with Kesler and they want that would be bold yeah and they take him because they’re going to get X amount in return for Kesler and so that’s all you know one deal leads to another and then it’s all a big puzzle and it fits together that’s a possibility uh I think Mal Malich is no question top 10 i think that if he’s available at 10 the Suns would sell their soul to get him uh but I don’t know that he’ll be available uh for what uh what he can provide so yeah this and plus it’s the NBA draft man i’ve been interested in the NBA draft literally my whole life and now you know we’ve been doing it for years and there’s been some years for the Jazz perspect many many years actually where the Jazz uh draft was pretty much hoham if they didn’t have a pick or they don’t have a pick draft yeah and some in the second round and so there wasn’t that buzz and yeah the last time you know they had the big time big time buzz they didn’t get it right they chose goes Caner and uh Burks okay one player disaster in the other player yeah the last two top five picks Caner and Exom well they’ve had they’ve had four top five picks in their history since they moved to Wilkins they sold darren Williams was good but even Darren Williams wasn’t the better player chris Paul should have been the pick if you just go on A versus B in terms of talent if you want to go longevity well I think in talent I mean at the time Chris Paul’s teams always lost to Darren Williams teams and they both had the ball in their hands a lot dwell because that meant that Darren’s team was better but neither one of them there’s There’s no doubt you should have taken Chris Paul you’re You’re not going to argue that are you uh sure why not with that you got like three minutes till break i know but you got to have a leg to stand i I want to beat you in arguments but I don’t want to pulverize you and take away your soul who’s the other top five oh Griffith griffith way back in the day that was an okay pick he started playoff teams not our old Griffith not a home run but player good pick yeah i have to go back and look at that draft and see who they passed on uh Dr dunkinstein that’s a fine pick and the irony of it is this is a different administration so you can’t really compare it as it would be over the course of that time but the funny thing is that they have been great with later picks i know it’s that’s where the glory has been yeah and obviously the statues lead the way but this this recent NBA finals there are nine starters who weren’t top 10 picks carol Linko I think was in the 20s yes he was a late pick and he was a nice player go was a was a late pick yeah and they’ve had some Brian Russell for where you got him that was pretty good milsap obviously was great uh for what he provided to you and for you uh so they’ve had Hayward was earlier he wasn’t really a late pick oh was he nine it was the first half of the lottery because George went 10 hayward was a good pick and if it got reddrafted he wouldn’t be on the board at nine he would have been gone top five yeah i don’t remember who else that I’d have to go back and look but that was that was an excellent pick uh Trey Lyles when Deon Booker was there not good not really a good pick as a bouquet not good uh but that that’s all part of the deal i mean I mean I think it’s impossible to uh ask these guys you got to get a high percentage you’re just not going to get get Well the thing we’re missing when we the thing we’re missing is that we don’t get any time around them you love having a little time to kind of assess you know how much how driven are they you know is there a chip on their shoulder jerry Sloan would tap his heart you never know what’s in here and he got you know he got time with them he he could interview them talk to them how much do you figure out when they’re on a job interviewing on their best behavior you got to see through some stuff everybody’s presenting their best face the thing that I had heard is that they really invested into that stuff after the Luther Wright pick yeah that that was we’ve got to take a much better deeper look on all that other stuff that goes into it because that was an absolute disaster uh and that uh you know and you learn from your mistakes you know as long as you’re not committing them over and over yeah yeah but that was the draft where they hit on B Russ in the second round so I know that’s what’s so funny it’s just crazy you had such Yeah such a terrible story in the first round and such a great story in the second yeah yeah made no sense and I And I think I wonder if it’s happening here like what if well whoever they drafted five you know it doesn’t work out or they’re okay or whatever but then do they hit a 21 they got to get the five pick they got to get it right they got to get it right man they they just have to get this thing right and that would really be hard to argue and then you look at the history of the draft and top five picks no you got to get it right now there are there are guys who are who go at five and you wonder well in retrospect they should have got one or two and there’s also guys who are going at 10 11 12 you’re think why didn’t they go at five fine i mean should should Austin be looking so should Austin be looking outside the I don’t know what is the common logic of whatever and like if he really has the courage of his conviction and maybe trade back you know well you mentioned uh because we watch Illinois basketball and come in here and talk about that uh Yakosonus is predicted 9101 somewhere in there they they think that then shocker yeah and I think I think Austin has that chip on the shoulder i really believe it he’s been dealing with this freaking A name literally his whole life right that’s a shadow it is but if that’s the chip on your shoulder that motivates you to be great then Yeah good right and if you Joe Blow and this is your first gig you want to show everybody I can do this right and then you got this name and the the guy plays for the Celtics he didn’t play for some the Charlotte team or whatever you know for the Celtics man with Bird not in some random area it was Bird yeah yeah the best of the best and so this name is is going to be out there and he wants to show that fine that’s the name but it’s the person man and so I believe he has that chip and that’s where I say he’s going to do whatever it takes if if it takes looking at film for 15 hours straight whatever i’m just as example that’s what he’s going to do he’s going to pay the price to get it right djpk it’s 975 the zone talking BYU recruiting with Jay Drew If Ace is there they will take him unless they receive a very attractive trade offer. If Tre is there they take Tre.
