it’s a Wednesday edition of Lockdown Grizzlies It’s a firstround NBA draft 2025 edition of Lockdown Grizzlies And wouldn’t you know it we have a draft pick now Hooray Something to talk about And I have an old friend the Seth Rollins to my Triple H for the wrestling fans in the space Parker Fleming is with us And I’m so happy to be talking about all of this and more on this special edition of Lockdown Grizzlies Let’s lock in You are Locked on Grizzlies your daily Memphis Grizzlies podcast part of the Locked On podcast network your team every day It is a wild and wonderful Wednesday edition of Locked On Grizzlies I am your host for this episode Joe Molen show to Michael Cole Very busy guy this time of year looking into all the inner workings of the Memphis Grizzlies through his position as the beatw writer for the commercial appeal covering the Grizzlies there in Memphis Tennessee You’ve got me Joe Mullenex but I’m not alone on this episode of Lockdown Grizzlies I have the wonderful the incomparable the uh the Obi or the Obi-Wan to my Qui-Gon Is that too too much of a deep cut I I like the Triple H Seth Rollins comp though you get credit for that one Parker Fleming at Paka_Flocka Tremendous tremendous basketball writer We go way back to the Grizzly Bear Blues days and uh so happy to have you with me Parker I I always mispronounce it so I’m going to let you lead off with it You have an amazing substack that I am subscribed to called It’s called Subsacolitus It is actually Subscalitus I don’t know why I struggle with that so much because obviously I know the player Jake Sakalitus but uh but here I am still not being able to say it unless I hear my good buddy Parker Fleming say it Parker it’s good to see you It’s great to see you Joe Two things before we start One I wish we were like I wish when we had our podcast together it was this official The intro we had the little little ticker on the side like it’s a little like classic Sports Center kind of vibe It’s actually quite hilarious that you brought up the Triple H Seth Rollins comparison because I’m actually wearing a CM Punk T There you go Best in the world versus the greatest of all time I’m excited for the the the PLLE this weekend assuming that it still happens We’re going to leave that topic well enough alone to be sure Make sure you’re liking commenting rating reviewing subscribing Wherever you get podcast Apple Spotify Google Amazon YouTube literally anywhere Locked on Grizzlies is available to you Hopefully you’re an everydayer at this point checking out an episode each and every time it drops The Michael and I are greatly appreciative of all of you that do that And if you don’t already do it hopefully you do so after today’s episode Uh Parker before we get into the draft itself on the eve of the draft yesterday numerous major trades were announced Sham Steroni of ESPN who kept busy uh during the pre-draft festivities talking about Chris Porzingis being moved and uh CJ McCullum being traded all sorts of different movements and shakings happening in and around the NBA How does it impact the Grizzlies Is obviously this is locked on Grizzlies right This is the name of the game Obviously Memphis not directly involved in either of those exchanges but you and I have texted back and forth We’re in a group chat with our buddy Sean Coleman as well talking about what these things could potentially mean Chris Harrington on social media also posted of the Daily Memphian also posted about how he thinks this makes the Pelicans being looking into trading Trey Murphy or Herb Jones less likely which should hurt the hearts of Grizzlies fans if that does come to pass especially you know Trey Murphy he’s kind of the dream but Herb Jones Herb Jones would be a really good fit as well How do you look at the state of play for Memphis the Western Conference the NBA at large particularly the Grizzlies of course here on this podcast after these two seismic moves and for folks that may have missed them uh from Shams the New Orleans Pelicans are trading C.J even call him Kelly Olenick in a future second round pick to the Wizards for Jordan Pool Sadique Bay in the number 40 pick and then the Boston trade was a three-team trade Boston Atlanta and Brooklyn Porzingis in a second round pick to the Hawks Terrence Man and Atlanta’s number 22 pick to the Nets The Nets have something like five first round picks now They’re definitely going to make some trades And Gorgeous Nyang and a second rounder to the Celtics So Boston continues to move under the second apron clearly uh kind of punting the season ahead with Jason Tatum out Your overall thoughts about those two deals in particular and how they relate to the Grizzlies Yeah Uh I want to start with the the three team trade because uh I did a mock off season last week just because this is a big off season Uh they have assets plus a huge decision with the Jiren Jazza Jr renegotiation extension But one of the things that kind of looms is who’s going to be the opening night starting center And with that $ 8.8 million room exception that they would have as a caps base team I suggest salute Cornet from the Boston Celtics Probably not in the mix now Yeah with Porzingis gone Horford either gone or taking a pay cut I don’t think that’s going to happen I think they’ll keep Cornet keep him on a cost control deal So there goes one uh one free agent target However you know Chris Harrington did point out that Clint Capella makes it a little bit more sense now because they got Chris Hot Sports Inis They had the 13th pick as well They have a Yankee Okongu but Capella I’ve never been the biggest fan of his game but it was more so in the context of his contract I didn’t want Clint Capella at 20 million a year but however you get him on that room exception like a two and a two and 17 million Like that’s hard to at the end of the day he’s still he could be a starting center for 40 games you know absolutely I think Clint Capella makes a lot of sense given especially the early reads on what Tumasiso new head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies wants to do if the goal is to have a big screening center that is able to rebound and do a variety of things rim protect allow for Jiren to continue to be that weak side help defender you certainly can do a lot worse than Clint Capella so I think you’re on to something there maybe makes that a little bit more likely a rental so to speak while Zach Edi comes back from that serious ankle injury I’m intrigued more so by that Pelicans trade because it enables New Orleans to say that they’re allin while trading for Jordan Pool Maybe not allin but they certainly don’t look like a team that wants to punt uh with that kind of deal And again it’s wild to say that because Jordan Pool is involved but if you didn’t pay attention to the Wizards this past season it’s understandable because the Wizards were abysmal Jordan Pool had a bit of a bounceback year He’s better than CJ McCollum at this point And I do think while there’s some questions in terms of defensive fit and how that’s all going to work out in Nola I am intrigued by P on that Pelicans roster The the Pelicans are better today than they were this time yesterday Yeah And then also too another thing to point out is well with with the Pelicans I’m gonna get to the Pelicans real quick I don’t know how much it changes for Herb Jones and Trey Murphy Frankly yeah I’m with you I agree But Trey Murphy I always thought it was kind of a a delusional uh wish to be honest He had the kind of the Jiren Jackson Jr treatment where the ball was in his hands He could kind of do whatever he wants Like I think if you’re trading for Trey Murphy you’re essentially giving up the package that you gave up for Bane in terms of draft capital Uh but with Herb you know wait and just try you know uh but they have a unique team now and the fact where they have the guys where let’s say it just doesn’t work and Joe Dumar is like you know what we’re going to tear it to studs There’s no way we can compete with this team they can start some sort of OKC I’m not going to say OKC but they can accumulate a lot of picks for guys like Herb Jones Trey Murphy maybe Zion recoup some of his value to where you can get something Um and you know you could be one of the few teams in the Western Conference that has an eye for the 2030s instead of now Uh but also with the Washington Wizards I don’t I don’t think there’s going to be five teams in the NBA that they’re better than which will help the Memphis Grizzlies because they have a pick swap with between the Washington Wizards and the Phoenix Suns who also just made a very questionable trade with Kevin Durant And now you have two teams that are looking potentially towards the lottery at this point Obviously a lot of offseason left A lot a lot can change but I I’m very I’m very much intrigued by that pick swap with Atlanta You know they I saw too where it’s like they have a $25 million trade exception that they plan on using on a win now player and I’m just like this can get interesting Like another East team trying to be competitive I like it That’s what I want to see So yeah very good very interesting trades that have surfaced uh over the last 24 hours I’m sure probably by the time this goes up to uh on Wednesday morning there will probably be at least one more if I had to predict Yeah that’s how I feel Something late The Pacific the Pacific Coast teams will get involved somehow uh around this time probably around midnight we’ll have another Shams bomb uh dropping I think the Wizards are going to go full OKC I think they’re going to just completely copy that that line of thinking and take on every bad contract I believe it was the Wizards you were talking about with the trade exception there Um but the Hawks have one too The Hawks have one too Uh with whatever trade exceptions whatever the Wizards are capable of doing I think they are going to give me your tired your weary your terrible contracts your veteran that’s hanging on by for dear life Uh I think that’s what the Wizards are going to do take bad money off of people Also too when Middleton Mcllum and Smart are off the books they’re going to have over $100 million in caps Oh yeah They are very much going to take advantage of people that give those supermax extensions that maybe they shouldn’t have right And fate led to that not being the best idea Uh let us know on X Hit us up in the comments I’m on X Joe Mullenax My buddy Parker Fleming is on X at one of the best Twitter handles there is at Paka_Flocka Make sure you’re checking us out there Hit us up How are you feeling about these trades how they impact the Grizzlies The biggest impact in reality is the 2026 pick swap that Parker was talking about There’s a decent chance both Phoenix and Washington are bad next year And if that does indeed come to pass that’s very good for the Memphis Grizzlies When we come back here on this episode of Lockdown Grizzlies we are going to preview the first round of the NBA draft What does Memphis do at 16 That’ll be our focus coming up next Stick around This episode of Lockdown Grizzlies is brought to you by Open Phone If you’re running a business you know that every missed call is money left on the table Think about the last time that you had an urgent need Maybe be as soon as possible 2025 NBA draft guide You have all sorts of different ways in terms of a Grizzlies perspective You put that out as well You’re a tremendous scout of this young talent You know very proud of you Big brother little brother kind of stuff The work that you’ve been doing uh especially around this time of year Again shout out the Substack again and let us know where you see the Grizzlies going in this particular draft I am a big Tankathon guy I have been for some time Nick Clifford is the pick over at Tankathon and that as you wrote about in your Substack is kind of the consensus for the Grizzlies as well assuming that our boy Cedric Coward is not on the board Yeah Uh obviously I do I really do want Cedric Coward I think that you know he fits the archetype that the Grizzlies have typically coveted with trades trade um offers for OG Anobi Muel Bridges the archetype of these big wings with 72 wings fans that are drafted in the first round They don’t fail They’re typically awesome basketball players So and I I think that you know I looked both at this year at Washington State I walked last year at Eastern Washington shot 76% at the rim 40% from three has this kind of nice like bully ball style in the mid-range where I obviously he’s not going to post up but hey can he attack a close out run a side pick and roll and put put his opponent in jail and get to his mid-range shot And I know he still has some room to grow defensively just because of his because of his frame But there’s just stuff that he can already do because he has a 710 wingspan And that’s why I want him Obviously with Nick Clifford it’s plug and play and I have him 15th on my big board just because I don’t see many outcomes where he fails I think he’s going to be the first player in this draft class that will have a playoff moment You know when I watch some of these guys in the NBA playoffs these Josh Harts Aaron Niss um even even like a L like I don’t know if he could defend like Lou Dort but like a Lud Dort like with the physicality I just see him as a guy that plays in these high stakes games He would be a great pick Um and you know another thing I’m kind of watching for before I bring up any other prospects one another thing I’m watching for and this is something I might encourage if Cedric Howard or Colin Murray Boilles who I also adore in this draft class uh I would suggest looking at trading down and trading down because they have like it’s to get Jiren to around $230 million on his next contract they’ll have to trade John Kchar I know that saddens you No Parker fluffing Oh god You can’t say goodbye Your acting’s gotten so much better God I’m just kidding I’m so happy It’s tears of joy Barker Fleming you’re making my day And you know who makes the most sense for that The Brooklyn Nets who now have something like five first round picks Let’s see The the Nets have the 19th overall pick They have the 26th overall pick They have the 27th overall pick 16 and John Kar for 26 sounds great to me Or even 22 Um I’m even looking I and I know Chris Harrington floated out these other teams too like Washington and Utah Another team I’m kind of watching for is Miami because I remember that Mark Stein reported interest in John Kchar and I know they may not be in the salary dump business but one of the worst secrets out on uh in the NBA draft sphere right now is that the Miami Heat might love Walter Clayton Jr And if I were them I would be a little bit worried about some of the teams in between there whether it’s Brooklyn or Washington or Minnesota because he is that winning player He’s a guy that like I don’t like for me like I’m looking at the Wizards I’m looking at the I’m looking at the um the Nets and I’m like you can’t just draft a bunch of raw 19year-olds You got to have a guy in there that has a winning pedigree and can kind of step in and contribute to positive basketball day one So it’s like hey if you really want Walter Clayton Jr you can jump up to 16 not have to worry about it and we’ll take and you’ll have to take John Contour’s contract and we’ll get 20 Boom You shed I think you would end up shedding about like $7 million which I think could probably get you there You may if you may have to do like a oh how about Jay Huff for a second round pick or Vince Williams for a second round pick something like that they could do that but that’s what I’m watching for is a potential trade down involving John Kar which is not something Zack Kimman typically does but with the importance and how much they’ve been stressing about getting Jiren Jackson Jr on this extension and avoiding unrestricted free agency in 2026 when teams more teams have cap space to actually go do something worthwhile That’s something I’m watching for if if like a guy like Cedric Coward or Colin Marie Boils are not on the board Yeah I think that you’re on to something there I like that idea Enables you to achieve that number one goal in house of resigning Jiren Jackson Jr now that the choice has been made Desmond Bane is gone If this is Jaw and Jiren’s team you need to have Jiren locked down long term That should be a priority So I definitely could see them pulling off something like that However I could also see them doing something along the lines of tagging the 16th pick to a trade for somebody like a PJ Washington somebody like an Aaron Nemouth Maybe you probably have to overpay right You talked about the Bane package of four first round picks Might take two or three first to get there And maybe that’s too rich for the Aaron Nesmith situation But if you’re a believer that the Grizzlies need an upgrade on the wing that would be a way to get there as well whether it’s Washington Nesmith or somebody else using that 16th pick to kind of sweeten the pot and get you a player that is more likely to help you win Now uh that that’s another way I could see this going tonight You know I’m thinking because now that the Grizzlies have this 2026 pick they can avoid the stipion rule So they are now able to use that 20 their own 2026 first If you’re confident in your team you’re confident in how that 2026 pick between Washington and Phoenix going to look like I don’t know like they may need to reroute Cole Anthony to another team maybe Sacramento You can even say “Hey Cole like here’s Sacramento We’ll give you that second round pick back from the Jake Larabia trade if you take Cole Anthony,” which they have a huge trade exception as well from that Zack Lavine Kevin Herder trade Um but then maybe throw in give them the 16th pick plus next year’s 2026 first Memphis is 2026 first for Nmith I this dude was a guy that started on in a on a finals team like and he was when he fouled out in that game seven and you saw the effort that he was playing with the competitor that he was Again we’re talking about dogs right We’re trying to find dogs and Aaron Neith from what I saw in the NBA finals is a dog Now I want to stress that’s speculation There are no rumors Season literally ended three days ago for these guys But Nesmith would check a lot of boxes And again Hallebertton just had surgery on his Achilles They’re not necessarily in the exact same boat as Boston I do think the Pacers could run it back a little bit and still be in the top six or so in the Eastern Conference but they’re certainly not going to be able to do what they did in the NBA Finals The Pacers aren’t getting to the NBA finals this season this past season that just concluded without Tyres Hallebertton It’s probably not happening next season either Uh so Nmith would be cool Washington would be cool There’s lots of other names Let us know on X Hit us up in the comments how you would like to see a trade go down Parker talked about trading back I like the idea of trading up if you’re really into somebody Uh you know Parker mentioned the uh very talented I think you wrote about it in your Substack Colin Murray Boils The only thing he doesn’t do is shoot the three right He literally does everything else Very talented player Would be a fascinating match in Memphis Uh Asa Newell is somebody that we know has worked out for the Grizzlies They might have to trade up for him So there’s lots of different directions that Grizzlies can take here and it’s going to be fascinating to watch unfold Again make sure you’re following Parker at pocka_flock If you don’t subscribe to the Substack which is called Substackus Substackus If you don’t already subscribe make sure you’re doing so He does it essentially for donations right for St Jude It’s a wonderful cause Make sure you’re going and checking out his Substack Lots of great content over there that’ll get you ready for tonight’s first round and obviously the second round on Thursday When we come back here on Lockdown Grizzlies we’ll close out this NBA draft first round edition of the show with a a name that’s surprising me a bit that he’s rising in terms of demand That’s Santi Alama We’ll talk about that next here on Lockdown Grizzlies This episode of Lockdown Grizzlies is brought to you by Wayfair There’s nothing like stepping into your own out of here on this This is something that you and I disagree on and it’s Santi Alama And there’s more and more reporting Jake Fischer Mark Stein those types of guys that obviously are very tuned in to NBA circles saying that Santi Alama’s market might be booming uh in terms of teams being interested A sign and trade is possible Obviously with restricted free agency what’s stopping a team aside from cap space to offer Santi something like three years 60 million that sort of deal Uh I am of the mind that if that happens there is no sign and trade and it’s just a flatout offer that the Grizzlies can choose to match or not they should let Santi walk And maybe that impacts some of their philosophy I have a feeling that or their philosophy going into the draft tonight Maybe you disagree with me and I have a feeling you do Uh are you surprised at all that Santi Alama’s demand is rising Do you disagree with me when I say if the cost gets too much Memphis shouldn’t match So I’m going to split this into two parts For one I’m not surprised that Santiama is getting the demand that he’s getting because at the end of the day he’s 7 foot He’s 24 years old He can dribble pass shoot He’s coming off a season where he’s a he averaged 12 and a half points almost six and a half rebounds almost three assists a game Doesn’t turn the ball over all that much Shot 37 Is he a dog Does he defend He does He is not the best defender now Oh but does he rebound I will say I will say wait what about rebounding Does he rebound Is he a good rebounder for his position He’s solid He was I think he was behind Zack Edy in rebounds per game on the team The Memphis Grizzlies have two bigs that are perimeter based They have Jiren Jackson Jr and they have Santi Alama This town ain’t big enough for the both of them at this point in my opinion Here’s my big thing with Santi is do you know what defined Dallas Mavericks making it into the NBA Finals in 2024 and Indiana making it into the NBA finals this year Those role players hitting shots you know the Aaron Emiths the PJ Washingtons Derek Jones Jr guys like that Santi Adama in his playoff career in 10 games Small sample but noteworthy because it’s the playoffs 43.6% on 3.9 attempts per game on T in in 10 games He also in that final game you know he didn’t go down without a fight 23 points nine rebounds three assists five of seven from three nine of 13 from the field I just think it’s valuable to have guys that you know can hit shots in the playoffs and he has shown that so far He has shown that in his Olympic play as well which is more high stakes basketball Like I think if the price is right you bring him back you know because guess what They’re losing shooting with Dustin Payne and they’re about to lose shooting with Luke Canard and you’re not replacing that with just Contavius Cwell Pope or like and you still need like I love Jaylen Wells but he only shot 35% from three last year You need him to be closer to Washington State Jaylen Wells when it comes to his three-point shooting as a 40 plus percent three-point shooter So I value that with Santi And also too guess what Let’s say it’s four four and 60 You bring him back $15 million a year Guess what Guess what else you have right now A trade ship You have another midsize salary that you can stack with the Brandon Clarks with Cole Anthony who I think will probably get traded before the Santi Alamazine trade with Katavius Cwell Pope you have these midsize contracts now that you could or let’s say you go into the playoffs you’re like “Okay this Santi is not working.” Now you can use him as a trade chip next summer when that contra 3 and 45 another team will take that But I think he’s also demanding this because yes a skill set but also there could be the belief like “Hey he’s 24 There’s not a pathway for him to start because Jiren Jackson Jr.’s there Let’s just let’s just see what happens if we want to start him because of his skill set However if a price gets to the point where it’s not feasible for Memphis to match you know like if it’s a three and 60 but guess what There’s only one team that can really offer him that and that is without a signing trade and that is Brooklyn And so we got to kind of see what they’re going to be doing with their with their cap space I am kind of keeping an eye on that because he does have ties to Jordi Fernandez who is that coach to the Brooklyn Nets who has ties to the Spanish national team But anybody else that wants to offer Santiama an offer that the Grizzlies cannot match They had to get into sign and trade talks with the Memphis Grizzlies We’ll get you out of here on this Parker Two predictions Prediction number one will the Grizzlies pick at number 16 tonight And will it be a pick for them Uh and two will Santi Alama return to the Memphis Grizzlies next season I don’t need a contract number but do you see Santi back in the fold Two predictions to get you out of here Two predictions because I got to make you happy on on one because the other one’s going to disappoint you My prediction is the Memphis Grizzlies will come away with such a coward in this draft Let’s go And I do think and I think Santi Alama will be a Memphis Grizzlies next year I I’m not going to be super bummed I want to stress that I I I I or stress that he’s a good basketball player and I like he’s a good basketball player and the point that you made about losing Desmond Bane Does it really make sense to lose Santi in the same off season I think it’s fair to say no depending on the price right They moved on from Bane and I got Luke Canard right Uh shout out to Lukard Poor one out for Luke I think that Santi will be here I agree I’m nervous about his fit next to Jiren The fact that Brandon Clark’s on the roster but again if it’s a 15 or$16 million contract it’s hard to let that guy walk for nothing and he can become a trade piece if the season is going ary and you decide to you know maybe beyond John Jiren you know you decide to nuke it a little bit and try to get as many assets as you can at the trade deadline Uh I love your Cedric Coward prediction I maybe I’m gonna surprise you here The Grizzlies will not be picking at 16 I think they’re going to do exactly what you just said earlier and they are going to trade back perhaps with the Brooklyn Nets or Miami That makes sense given that previous tie to John Kar for the exact reason that you outlined If the priority is resigning Jiren Jackson Jr that saves you about a million dollars or so on the cap hit from 16 to 20 or 23 depending on the team and you could still get a player potentially I could see them trading out of the first round completely for that exact reason trying to get rid of that Kick the can down the road in terms of assets If the goal is Jiren Jackson Jr being on this team and getting it done this summer the re the renegotiate and extend is the way to do it I think that’s the priority in this draft And because of that I think that they will trade back I also agree that Santi Alama will be there So let us know in the comments Hit us up on X Do you think that the Grizzlies will pick at 16 Do you think Santi will be here Obviously two topics that we’ll continue to talk about And on our next show tomorrow we’ll be able to focus in on everything that the Grizzlies do in that first round Preview the second round where Memphis at least as of this recording has two second round picks Seems unlikely that they’re going to have two second round picks at the end of all of this I think the second round could certainly have a trade Uh Parker I think it’s going to be a busy next 48 hours for all of us that follow the Memphis Grizzlies Yeah for sure But you know what I’m I’m looking forward to it You know I’ve been I’ve been studying this draft since August and uh I’m I know people are just kind of like they don’t need a draft pick Don’t get another rookie This CBA is showing this The NBA Finals just showed the value of having good players on rookie scale contracts Absolutely Like you know you know what pick Jaylen Williams was The 12th pick And you know how recent that was Three years ago Mhm Three years ago he was the 12th pick Nobody knew He was this mystery guy that just rose up and became the 12th pick And now he’s all NBA allstar all defense NBA champion So don’t knock a draft pick because who knows what it could become You can get you can extend a you can extend a window with it So don’t knock draft picks I and I’m not I’m not trying to come across like uh like a a snob or anything but like I’ve studied this draft since August There’s there are a bunch of good players in this draft Like they can get a guy who you know what he may not contribute They may he may not need to contribute next year but I I’m in the firm belief that they can contribute in a high lever situation by the end of the rookie contract And if there’s anything that this front office has proven if the Grizzlies do indeed trade back they have the capacity to find somebody that can contribute Jaylen Wells Gigi Jackson Vince Williams Jr you know it’s the it’s the higher first round picks that they tend to struggle with So I almost want them to trade back for that reason But Parker Fleming there’s no one that I’d rather talk Grizzlies basketball with Make sure you’re checking out his Substack which is entitled Subscalitus Did I say it right You said it right Yes I I I’m growing I’m getting better in my old age Substack Elitus Again I can’t stress enough You should
