heat heat [Music] [Music] never a dull moment when it comes to the Philadelphia 76ers and now it includes the draft process as Ace Bailey cancels his expected workout with the Philadelphia 76ers late on Wednesday night and has everybody in Sixers world spiraling out of control with thoughts of how this is now going to play out welcome to the PHLY Sixers podcast on a Thursday where we are now six days away from the start of the NBA draft well we’re sitting here with Derek Bodner Kyle Newbeck i’m Devon Given president of basketball operations bri is hanging out with us our show is presented by Rothman Orthopedics running with us all summer long once again we had a great summer last summer and right now it just got that more interesting with everything that happened with Ace Bailey so we’ll get into all of that glad to have all of you in the chat first we want to can tell you once again that we are still hanging out with you for spirit week here at the network and we appreciate everybody hanging out with us yesterday for our musical chairs day that was a blast and today is Big Brothers Big Sisters Day so far we have reached our goal of $10,000 and we cannot thank you all enough for donating and participating and all the money raising this awareness for Big Brothers Big Sisters now we want to just keep it going can we get to Derek would you say 15,000 15 let’s just get this as high as possible as we run through Friday as our last day for spirit week and look I understand that’s a lofty goal but as we will discuss in today’s show shooters shoot you got to have confidence shooters shoot you got to have that confidence certainly do and sometimes that confidence that gets you in trouble but with our confidence here of asking to continue to donate to Big Brothers Big let’s get to as high as possible so at the end of Friday that we are in fact in the lead uh for this yes I see a lot of happy Junth in there so happy Junth everybody and hope you’re having a great day our day got interesting late last night with the Philadelphia 76ers with Ace Bailey and before we get to all of the the reports that are out there from ESPN where it started Kyle writing his story at all phely.com an update from Mark Stein uh our our teammate there at DLLS and and all of it normally I pass it off to the guys but I think I should start off on this one on this day because because the snatching the mic i’m snatching the mic here everybody because I have been the one and listen I will say this about my teammates here ace Bailey has been in the top five for both of these guys for the entire process of leading into where things are between five and six sometimes top six top six just take the credit just let him talk yes it’s fluctuated for where things are as far as how these guys rank him amongst the pro this process here and in the draft really good talent there when we talk about the top six and the six Sixers keeping their pick they move up to number three and the guys have moved on kyle early on was saying “You know what i’m still ace i can look at it at number three and understand it derek maybe a little bit more down the line i have stood firm at number three with Ace Bailey earlier this week I’ve adjusted and I said I get why they will move on from Ace Bailey after the reports from last night Kyle will lay those out here shortly many of you have seen them i have even moved off myself of understanding number one of why they would not take him and why number two they should not take him last night with this report coming down about him canceling the workout and some of the things that are in the report this was unnecessary for a player that we have discussed as one of the most talented ones in there that still needs time to grow and become a player the one thing that he does have is the scoring ability and the catch and shoot opportunity in a system where the Philadelphia 76ers are in this unique spot as a playoff team where a player so talented can walk into a situation where he’s not thrust into all of the negative things that will come with taking the shots 20 shots missing those handful of shots there the turnovers that go with it with a bad team where the fan base will look at and say “This was a pick this was an opportunity for come in for him to come in and Kyle will say this later because we’ve all talked about this that there was a starting spot there for him and minutes to be played on a playoff caliber basketball team for him to work in also with a player that he looked up to in Paul George where he can learn from him one that’s going to be a Hall of Famer at this very position that he has and can tighten up on some of those things learning from a coaching staff that is from one that has won a championship well we saw some young players even if he was forced to play them he played them and the dividends worked out for some of these young players from Tyrese Maxi more established as an all-star but more recent as Jared McCain Justin Edwards a Dumbona where it has worked out for those players under Nick Nurse this was going to be a spot where number three overall pick was going to get minutes with this basketball team and for the life of me from the player to the representation I don’t understand their thinking of wanting to necessarily go to a Charlotte Washington Brooklyn maybe even New Orleans situation where he is going to be in a spot where yes he will get his shots yes he will get an opportunity to potentially put points on the board and with those numbers maybe that will help him out with his second contract down the line but even as much as I like the thinking of a confident player to take those shots and believe in his shot making and all of that the fun answer of I have more than I have more than two strengths and no weaknesses that was fun but when it comes down to it and you have an opportunity to walk into a playoff situation maybe they don’t like the organizational organizational pathway that they look at and say maybe it’s not going to work out behind Maxi and McCain and all of that stuff but what’s it going to do in Charlotte where yes he passes the basketball a mellow ball but he’s taken 20 brandon Miller’s taken the 20 washington sure but this was one spot for me as an Ace Bailey fan where I looked at it and said I don’t want him going to Charlotte or Washington for those reasons that I am laying out that they are not really good organizations are the 76ers a great organizations i’ll leave that up to you to make that decision on how you feel things have worked out over the course of their franchise’s history but this was unnecessary by he and the representation and I wish that he had better people in his ear to guide him in the right direction away from Charlotte and Washington and Brooklyn and a spot like Philadelphia where he could come in and learn and still be a contributor on a playoff team and do some really good things where eventually turn out to be the player that is not scrutinized the way that he would be in other cities where I think yes he would have been scrutinized for some of the decision-m and maybe the shot attempts and all of that but I believe and I have stood firm in my disagreements with Derek and Kyle and some of you that I thought this was a spot where he could really work out for the player and the person to kind of tone some things down for the offensive mindset but to also go in there make some of the mistakes but get better sooner rather than later and play some meaningful basketball so for him and his representation this one again I just don’t get this is puzzling to me that they have decided that this is the pathway for them and I think it’s the wrong I could I could be wrong when it all plays out later on for Ace Bailey in whatever city he ends up in but this one was a disappointment for me as an evaluator of the player and where I thought it might just work out in a situation in Philadelphia and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be the case now we’ll get into the Sixers and what they can still do with Ace Bailey they can still take the guy but for this this was an unnecessary blip on him for him that was not there with all the stuff that Kyle and Derek have pointed out that no matter what has been said about the player and what he does on the floor all of the returns as the person coming back and how they discuss things there hasn’t been a lot of bad things said about the guy this was just going to be one that is going to stick with him now right or wrong because of how they played this and how they dealt their hand here with this particular spot for Ace Bailey so normally I let the guys just go run i needed to run for these nine minutes because I’m disappointed i was going to say I didn’t even need to show up for work today apparently rolling this is great cuz every now and then you need proof that like when we shut the bleep up for 5 minutes Devon still got his fastball and you cooked man that was awesome no so so thank you but it’s all aces and his people fault and I wonder how much we will eventually find out is more of the people he’s listening to and it’s more of them than it is him but Kyle can you just get to I want to let Derek have the floor first because Derek has a different slant on this than I do and I also I I’m in more rant mode right now and I think after going n Yeah we’ll let Derek have the floor and kind of talk through his I’ll be kind of like the middle ground here which is weird this isn’t really a position I usually take so lay out the lay out what the story pointed out and how we got here so I don’t really care that he I mean I do care but I don’t care as much as others that he is cancelling the workout you know I do think there’s a a big part of me that doesn’t really like the way the NBA system is set up where basically like as a a young kid coming in you have almost no control over where you play for the first nine years of your career without doing something that people would think is like unseemly without trying to apply leverage to force your hand and become the bad guy i don’t as if when I remove myself from a you know tribalism fan of a team I don’t really like that setup so I don’t really like when people do this I don’t look at it as a character concern as much as others now the reason he’s doing this or supposedly reportedly doing this that he wants to go somewhere to be the featured guy to get all the shots to get all you know the ball as often as he can that I don’t like i think that was mostly you know borne out with the way he plays basketball as well but that’s reinforcing part of his game that I really don’t like and part of the reason that I don’t think he has necessarily the kind of upside other people view him as but the overall just I’m going to try to apply pressure to go where I want to go i don’t think I have quite as much of a problem with that as certainly as a lot of fans that being said I have been out like I think first of all if my question is does Daryl react to this i don’t really think he does all that much like if if there was any GM that’s going to go like I don’t care if he refused to work out Daryl sat with Ben Simmons for six months when he was kicking up you know what if Daryl thinks this kid is the next Kevin Durant he can spit in his face all at once daryl doesn’t care he’ll draft him and I’m kind of the same boat too if I truly believe in Ace Bailey as a superstar player as a focal point of your offense he can do this and I will still young maybe the people he’s around aren’t giving him good advice he can grow out of it i believe in the kid’s skill set i believe in his talent i believe he’s going to be the face of the franchise my thing is I just don’t so now if I don’t believe in that and I literally just wrote an article and we had a show the other day where I said I think his best role not only short term in his development which is something that we’ve been saying for a long time since well before the lottery we said I think his best role certainly in the short term is to come in where he doesn’t have to carry an offense where he can be an offball player where he can slowly grow into those skill sets to become more than that we’ve been consistent on that for a very long time but I even think his long-term role is best as I think his best skills his most translatable skills the ones I have most confidence in are as an offball player this is just further proof that he’s not willing to buy into the role that I think best suits him and whether or not that’s bad advice I’m not really like I think the way their tactics are going about this that can be bad advice but I think he plays the game of basketball like he think he is a main player like he is the the focal point he should be the focal point he’s most talented he should get the shots he should get the shot creation i don’t want to buy into that and this just sort of reinforces that and remember from the very beginning when we started to talk about this and I was on the Yeah I can see him coming here because of the very reason the pecking order he’s weighed down and that’s okay he can come in and learn in a spot like this and and he will be all right because those things that we talked about with Seth Greenberg or even his coach the other day the shotmaking is hard but he makes the shots a decent amount of time and if he really just tones up on some of that stuff he’ll be fine and that’s why I thought that Philadelphia with him if he would buy into the role of coming in and being behind those top three and then eventually looking at where Jared McCain Quinton Grimes and all that stuff however that works out and just take to the coaching then I think he would have been in a pretty good spot and that’s where I started off with and that’s why Derek I agree with you that that would have been a decent opportunity for him especially with the defensive stuff getting out the open floor the help defense that he plays where again everybody’s not pointing at him for this and next thing you know you look up in two three years and it’s a totally different player still with the scoring ability my bigger concern though was like he just can’t get by guys off the dribble right i mean look it’s a thing it is a thing but guess if he could do that I’m willing to overlook a lot but again look if he’s out there on the floor with those guys who’s defending him and and and is it is it anything that he would have learned from from in the practices and things of that nature from a different coaching staff where he looked at it and he got to it by the way he might have the third best defender on the perimeter out there and he might be able to get by them well and he’s having people create shots for him so he has closeouts that he can both either make the shot or attack you know pump fake and attack i think the way Sam Vini mentioned it Kyle’s just sitting there like he’s got chomping at the way Sam Vini mentioned it I think is right you know the Sixers are the right spot for Ace Bailey but I don’t know if Ace Bailey was the right person for the Sixers and that’s sort of like the way I’ve always felt right yeah so listen folks all right Kyle’s chomping at the bit and we going to get to Kyle so he can say his piece on the other side uh by the way already Phil saying relax and Kyle Derek and Devon this and that relax i haven’t even said anything i’m letting you two go will be play 82 games you don’t know what I’m going to say no he will not play games maybe I’m all in on Ace now what a what a plot twist that would be we don’t know so listen uh Phil relax just you what side you’re on on this one i mean I think most people know what side I’m on it’s just how am I going to present it what am I going to say about all this i would start here we have a lot of people including some people in the chat today like our our friend B Pump of the Pump It Up segment super chats for Ace Bailey all the time we’ve had disagreements mostly Derek and I with people who watch the show read our work about where Ace is on the board how much of a priority he should be and blah blah blah and like I think there have been reasonable disagreements right because end of the day I if I prefer VJ or Trey or Khan or Malawatch or whoever I can still see the argument from Sixers fans all throughout this process hey this guy is a wing someone who could play 34 he’s got a certain amount of size i see shot making i see two-way potential i see this like those are all coherent arguments to me right if you are a Sixers fan coming to me today still advocating to take Ace Bailey you are a stonecold loser you have no pride you cannot look yourself in the mirror and say “I feel good about myself and about my hobbies and about the things that I enjoy.” Because you are someone who’s looking at a kid who has been a terrible decision maker in every step of this process right bad decision maker with where he went to school but that’s okay right people are he’s 18 years old you can make a decision about where you go to school and ultimately end up regretting that right there are other guys who have made decisions where it’s like “Hey I’m a I’m a big-time recruiter i picked this major i went to a school like that’s okay you go to Ruckers you get big NIL money you still have pretty good draft stock that’s fine.” Then you go on the court and you say “Well this kid takes every BS shot under the sun because either he can’t get to the rim or more concerning he chooses not to get to the rim right he settles for the worst of the worst shots in basketball right this isn’t a kid like people have drawn comparisons to Trey Johnson with the tough shot making stuff right and there are some things that they share in common one of the big differences between Trey Johnson and Ace Bailey even if his percentages are lower he’s taking threes right he’s taking the shots that you want him to take you don’t have to really correct like “Oh man I got to turn these 18footers into 25 foot threes and plays that are more what you need to do in the NBA.” So he’s not taking the right shots he doesn’t see his teammates on the floor he doesn’t pass the ball like he chooses not to pass the ball and we can discern through like hey the playmaking reads at Ruckers were not really there because they have bad shooters that’s true they were not talented enough that’s true the ultimate assist number not that important to me the bigger thing he just doesn’t choose to make those passes and frankly he doesn’t see those passes a lot of time like one pass away one rotation away one guy away didn’t make those but okay you’re not looking at him to pass the ball i’ve heard that argument a ton of times from people i don’t need Ace Bailey to pass the ball i need Ace Bailey to come here and be a wing well that ignores that the history of top prospects who can’t pass the ball that’s a graveyard of terrible NBA players but let’s set that aside you’re like “Hey I can get him in here i can bring him into a role and I can scale him up i see the shot making.” Derek and I have even talked about “Hey he could be a catch-and weapon he could be a movement shooting weapon he can do this and he can do that well Ace Bailey is telling you what he’s already shown you through his game he’s telling NBA teams through his interviews through his lack of workouts through everything that him and his camp have put out that’s not who he wants to be so that argument falls to the wayside and then this last thing right like I would agree with Derek i don’t think in a vacuum not working out for the Sixers or saying I I would prefer to go elsewhere i don’t think that’s a character demerit i don’t think that that means Ace is necessarily even wrong about where he should be or where he wants to be but if you’re the Sixers right I see a lot of stuff that’s like the Sixers didn’t have this season to not take a chance on a star number one the Sixers didn’t have this season intentionally number two I don’t care about whether one individual player is a star i care about winning basketball games i care about creating an organizational culture that is people who would do anything to win right we have seen and including in Joel Embiid we have seen when the pillars of your organization are not about it the way they need to be Ben Simmons there are stories about Ben Simmons there are people who reported his teammates believe he faked COVID to try to get out of playing in game seven right that’s organizational cultural rot building around players like that joel Embiid is a body language failure in a lot of those big moments right we look at him and we see all the talent and you say I just look at that guy and I I feel like he doesn’t have what it takes maybe he doesn’t care about the right things like those debates happen over and over again and this entire town looks at how Tyrese Maxi has worn being one of the faces of this franchise right everyone knows about the hard work everyone knows about the character the he’s just a guy who’s always in the gym right what you also need to remember is this kid cares so much about doing right by his team that he let his head coach lie about benching him saying that Tyrese initiated it and Tyrese kept it quiet because he gives a damn about what’s best for everybody right so when I’m drafting in the top five of an NBA draft where there are a lot of talented kids I want people who have talent but I want people who are going to pick people up by the scruff of their neck and say “I don’t give a damn what you want it’s about the team right?” And it’s all these kids are talented i’ve said many times whether it’s VJ Trey Khan Malawatch CMBB like all these guys we talk about they are talented hardworking kids and I think Ace is a talented hardworking kid at the end of the day but he’s telling you I don’t want this i don’t want to be here i’m coming from a losing program and a losing situation and it’s other people’s fault and I want to go somewhere else where I can shoot as many times as I want and do whatever I want to do cool man that’s great maybe that works out for you i’m sure that he’s going to make a ton of money he’s going to put together a 30point game in summer league he’s gonna probably be in the NBA for 10 to 15 years if everything works out on like a medium path good riddance get this bozo out of my face i’m done talking about him i’m done thinking about him bring me people who care about winning basketball games and not about what is best for their ability to take BS mid-range shots and that’s all I have to say about this kid i’m done all right and when you talk about all of that and you look at mentioning again Charlotte Washington New Orleans Brooklyn is he going to change that is he going to Is he going to change that is he Is he going to be the one that goes in there and change the trajectory of where they are i don’t know that but it doesn’t look like it if that’s what your your mindset is going in especially with the things that we’ve seen so far where those organizations have not done that with others like Brandon Miller is a really talented guy he hasn’t come in and change winning he has not and it seems like he has done it the right way of how so how is he going to go in and help change people also make comparisons to players and that’s always the death of interesting conversations oh well VJ is Alex Caruso and Ace Bailey is Kevin Durant or like And that’s autom it’s like well here’s the thing right do I want to take Alex Carusa at number three no do but do I want players who actually give a [ __ ] about winning basketball games yes i don’t want guys who are coming here and their main takeaway after being a total loser as a college basketball player and accomplishing absolutely nothing after believing you’re going to come in and make the final four as a freshman alongside another presumed top five pick to take the lessons to take no lessons from that and to come out of it and say I need to be the undisputed guy is just insane and here’s the other part of it they didn’t get to i absolutely think that Ace Bailey is getting bad advice right like he very clearly is not getting good rep good representation the guy who’s representing him is Share Cooper’s father doesn’t have many clients doesn’t have a lot of connection they both went to Mickey and like look I agree with Derek with what Dererick said earlier as well right like I think there is a you can see the reasoning behind it right like they are clearly pushing a message and they’re clearly trying to accomplish something i I’m not disputing any of that his representation is clearly not helping the preconceived notions people have about him but people are also doing this thing where it’s like well all of this just kind of is happening to Ace Bailey right and I Paul George is much older and has less excuses for this right my whole thing with Paul George all year right was when he would talk about oh this is going wrong and this is happening and it would just be oh I it’s just is out of our control like everything’s happened to me why is the sky falling right ace Bailey still chose to go to Ruckers ace Bailey is still choosing to be represented by this agent and Ace Bailey I presume has an internet connection right i presume has a phone or a laptop or a TV and can see people for months on end saying “Hey the guy who’s representing you is not doing you any favors and could go to any agent and any agency today he could go to CIA Wasserman any of the clutch he could go to any of these people they would sign him up they would say “I’ll represent you tomorrow i will be your agent as of 400 pm today and would do it.” He is still ultimately and it’s he’s 18 he deserves some grace i I believe in him as a a kid as like a good person he is still choosing this path right so if you’re the Sixers if you’re any other team in the top five top 10 in this draft you have to look at that and say “Do I trust this kid’s decision making and what am I getting in the four years that I’ll have him on a rookie contract?” Right because as much as we talk about 5 years 10 years down the road you have to get through the first four years first I would be much more interested in a version of Ace Bailey that’s 22 years old 23 years old coming off of his rookie contract going through these trials and tribulations that he probably has to go through as both a player and a person than dealing with this nonsense now I I’m just totally out on this i was getting a little concerned we’re going to have to cut him off for the ad breaks we do have two i know my time so I can read a clock all right we’ll let Kyle breathe come back we also have to tell you don’t maybe they go elsewhere what does this now do potentially for as we’ve always talked about still trade options where maybe one of those teams like Ace Bailey enough where they want to move up and select Ace Bailey at three or jump ahead of Charlotte because you’ve talked about maybe some interest there what does it mean tradewise now that we look at this here for the Sixers i think Charlotte is now the only reasonable or realistic team that you would say maybe they trade down with them because Charlotte just values BJ and what he would do for them in terms of the the connectiveness between LaMelo Brandon Miller adds a defensive element they have been just a unserious team and he’s a serious kid so if they value him a lot I still think you could probably go to Charlotte and say “Look VJ is at or near the top of our list but he’s not like the number one guy after Harper and Flag by a lot so if you want to incentivize us to move back to four we’re okay with that.” I think if you go past there right if you talk about trading to Utah or trading to Washington or you know the other teams we talked about the Pelicans the Nets now that this is all happening right and you have very concrete reason to believe like hey either we’re going to get this kid and he’ll be a malcontent or we’ll get this kid and he’s not going to buy into sort of what our vision for him is it’s just a much bigger risk now and I think the league would look at the Sixers and like as much as Derek and I are like “Yeah I think Daryl would be the GM who would take him if anyone I just think other teams would call their bluff.” Like I I think if if you’re Danny A if you’re Shawn Mars if you’re whoever you’re like “Okay man like good luck take him and we’ll find out what happens.” And then Ace and his agent all they have to do is cause a a stink and it’s like you’re not going to unload him for serious value yeah i mean I think what I said was if Daryl believed in him he would be the GM no I’m just saying like I don’t think he’s a Daryl type prospect he is more of a credible person threatening this than like average GM is all I was saying i wasn’t saying that you think he’s going to take him for sure but so I think trade down scenarios shrink again unless you think that the Sixers have him at three on their board and are just like “Yeah we’re going to take him.” because that’s the only way that you can threaten teams with a trade down is if teams believe you want to take this guy still because I I think the class view is again if it’s three to six if it’s three to seven if it’s three to eight depending on how you rank these kids I I just don’t think a lot of teams are like man I’m desperate to get up to three because like what I have heard is for example Washington is super high on Jeremia my fierce i know he’s been in there for a workout i know they really like him i think it’s likely they just stay and take him at six and I don’t think there’s much danger that he gets taken before then and if he does I think Washington will look at a kid like Trey Johnson and just like “Yeah we’ll take him.” So I just think it’s less likely than ever that they would trade down i still think that they’ll make attempts and they’ll posture and everything we’ll hear is what you should hear which is we’ll still take ace and blah blah but like end of the day I think they’re staying at three or they might make one last like hail mary push to to move up to two i do think even if nobody believes that Daryl would take ace at three I think there would still be some interest for teams trading up if they wanted ace because they would be worried about other teams trading up to three and jumping everyone and getting ace so even if they don’t believe the Sixers would do it if they think somebody else might let you know jump up and and take him at three there’s still some you know urge to make that trade it’s not going to be as strong of an urge but there’s still something there to me if I think what Kyle said is right though if you are Daryl and VJ’s your guy and VJ specifically is your guy I don’t think you can trade any farther back the fourth because it seems like an almost guarantee that if Ace goes three then VJ’s going four to Charlotte like they have been very consistently connected to him so if you know you are at the point where basically the only way that I think Daryl can enter entertain trading back is if either Trey or Khan is actually their guy that they’ve been kind of keeping quiet this entire time then you feel like you have a good chance of getting him at five or six or maybe even seven but that’s the only way if VJ is your guy I think you stay at three and you pick him if Ace is your guy first of all good job uh keeping that hidden but then I think you stay at three and pick them otherwise you know I I think you just have to stay at three all right that’s our big deal presented by Cherry Hill things on how far he could fall you guys both just talked about some trade down possibilities how far could he fall potentially yeah and one of the things that Mark brought up was that they weren’t requiring I think the right exact way he phrased it was an ironclad guarantee that he would be taken at three in order to work out and that was one of the reports that has been out there it’s one of the things that we had heard a little bit yesterday uh it is you know it is it is something that has been reported and Mark kind of pushed back on not completely because he said that they didn’t require an ironclad guarantee which guaranteed I think definitionally is ironclad but we’re splitting hairs here you know it is either way they canled the workout and it seems like the reason they canled the workout is you know because he wants to go to a place where he has a a higher likelihood of getting the ball and being the featured guy in terms of how far he can fall I don’t think he’s going to fall that far i think the floor is eight seven eight yeah yeah somewhere in that range mark did say in the story today that the Pelicans interest in ace has been overstated or I believe that was actually that might have been Jake Fischer i don’t remember if it was Mark or it was from the substack though it’s from Jake it was from Jake Fischer so Jake said he does he thinks that the Ace Bailey Pelicans attachment has been overstated and now it’s seven i I think honestly at the end of the day he will end up in Brooklyn is my prediction i think that’s it i can see him and Cam Thomas fighting over shots right now who gets the shot right now that’s exactly what you’re going to see it’s not I don’t Again if this is what he wants that’s great like go ahead go do it it’s not the type of player and person I want on my basketball team straight up yeah and look there’s a lot of people in the chat right now like “Oh he’s still the best player at three don’t get distracted by this take him or these other players refuse to work out they turned out fine it’s stupid to turn them down just because of this and look that second part I largely agree with you i said that before like I think the system they have is pretty ridiculous i don’t really begrudge anyone for trying to exert any kind of control over their career and this is really their only chance to do that a week from now you have very little say so I get that i really do the problem is that instinct that Kyle went on like a 20-minute rant about of you know him wanting to be the featured guy him not having the awareness of what’s a good shot what’s a bad shot of what role he should be in of what role he should try to stay away from that is so evident on the basketball court and this is what I was trying to impress upon people in the the month leading up to this point is that when you watch him play basketball he does not have a good awareness of what is going on around him he does not take good shots and people want to bring up you know Ruckers and the situation and look I’ve said this time and time again ruckers stank but so did Ace Bailey’s decision-making and the one I always go back to and I’ve got a big synergy playlist of just it I think it’s titled Ace Bailey transition BS he has so many decisions in transition with the ball where look you can tell me all right they have no talent gets down to five seconds on the shot clock you’ve got to take a pull-up jumper i get that in fact that’s one of the skills that I think could be interesting even if it’s only a 30% shot that’s a better shot than maybe some other people can get but when you start talking about him taking a you know overall he took 60 attempts in transition half of them legitimately half of them were jumpers that he shot 37% on the whole point of taking a shot in the first you know seven or so seconds of the shot clock is that you have a better chance of getting the rim you have a better chance of getting a highv value shot and because of that you’re willing to take that early in the clock when you settle for a 20footer a mid-range 20footer with your foot just past the line that’s a contested jumper with 25 seconds left on the shot clock that is fundamentally you having no idea currently currently how to play the game of basketball and he has so many of these possessions it’s honestly astounding i’ve never seen anyone with his athletic profile his ability to get up and down the court shoot like 44% in transition it’s absolutely wild the decisions that he makes and it just shows he has so much to grow so much to grow and I’m not saying he can’t do it and quite frankly I’ve spent the last month looking into everything I could hoping hoping behind hope that I would go look at his like high school tape or talk to people and say you know what he actually has a lot of creation off the dribble that you can buy into he was in a bad spot or if he just came here and interviewed him was like hey yeah like I’m coming here to win i’m coming here to do this because here’s what I care about more than being right especially being right a month and a half before the draft i want good basketball if you told me he was actually Kevin Durant and we had a chance to get him at three and that you had a chance to watch him for the next nine years oh my god I would have been tickled pink i have no like fine I’ll be wrong you know what i’ll be wrong a lot over the next couple of years please make this one where I get to watch him develop into a star be the one that I’m wrong at i just don’t believe in it i haven’t believed in it because of the decision-making on the court because of the you know awareness and the processing and that to me that being showcased in this series of events and refusing to work out not just for the Sixers he hasn’t worked out for anyone and trying to get to a team where he gets all the shots and doesn’t have to deal with any of the pressures of winning or more specifically doesn’t have to deal with sharing the ball where he thinks his best path is to be a high usage face of the franchise it just reinforces every concern I’ve had over the last couple of months yeah so like some of the there’s a bunch of comparisons brought up in the chat like “Oh would you say this about you know a bunch of other guys who said I didn’t want to play for this specific team?” Well we can go through that list right so Chris’s Porzingis one of the main ones that was relevant to the Sixers when Chris’s Porzingis and his agent said “I’m not working out for the Sixers.” Chris Porzingis one saw a team that had drafted two centers in a row two saw the Sixers sucked and were not trying to win and said “I don’t want to be there.” Tyrese Hallebertton in that draft he told teams like for example Atlanta I don’t want to be in Atlanta atlanta had Trey Young tyresese Hallebertton not wanting to go somewhere where there is a max contract all-star point guard as a point guard prospect makes sense jason Tatum was a guy who initially said didn’t want to go to Boston i think he was more I want to be in I think it was Phoenix if I remember correctly guess who was drafted before him a wing who was in theory playing at his position these are all guys who actually were blocked from being who they could be and it was like hey you got to really fight for your job and that was like was Hayward already there when Tatum was drafted or was that I think he was the at the tail end of that that’s I can’t remember when the what the timeline was on that but more so the Jaylen Brown piece of that is what I would take into consideration mhm the difference that I am telling you is that this player is looking at a team in the Sixers instance that has a huge opening like the most clear opening you could have you can play day one and not only that two of the main stars on this team are hurt all the time you’re going to have dozens of opportunities to go out there and do basically whatever you want right because what we’ve seen from Nick Nurse’s offense is also give the ball to the good guys on the team and let them do what they want like that’s been the style of offense so to say to look at that and say I’d rather go somewhere where I will have even more opportunity and probably lose a lot more and be in a situation where it’s it’s just all about me like you can say maybe he’s right and maybe he is right i have never said I’m omniscent and I can see into the future i know that Ace Bailey is going to fail but if you’re asking me to make a bet on someone’s decision making and how what they value and what they’re telling you that they value he’s telling you that he values something that is the opposite of how I approach thinking about a team sport you want to handle it that way you go play tennis you go play golf i want guys on my basketball team that care about everybody else and everybody else that’s on the team and I what he’s showing you is that he doesn’t at least he doesn’t care about it as much as these other guys so give me the other guys it’s just amazing because you’re right if you put up if Bri had made a graphic and we had said this and she put up the projected starting lineup you slides right in you can put him anywhere in a they won UB McCain or Grimes spot one of them will start two but you could put him right in the starting lineup just right there and when those guys miss time he’s at worst the third option on that night if Embiid plays with Maxi and George is out he’s probably the third if Embiid is out and George is out there with Maxi he’s the third might be the second by the way Joel might of any star in the league part of this is PTSD but of any star in the league he’s the guy who goes to young players and is like “You better shoot the damn ball if it comes to you right?” He’s not stopping anybody from getting shots up in fact he gets pissed when he when guys come in and it’s like you know the record scratch pump fakes like I don’t know man it just feels like a total misread but again he’s entitled to feel whatever he wants to feel about where he wants to go but if you’re looking at it from the Sixers perspective you just say “Cool good good for you.” Yeah which would make what what would make it more interesting though now is Daryl my drafts him and then we have to talk about it and what works out from there Derek of how Daryl my says “Okay I he’s the best talent he was number three on our board we’re taking him you can I can hear it in his voice ahead of time right like I can absolutely hear him saying it already like well whole season he was our number three we just think he’s the best talent blah blah blah yeah we knew it all along and And they take them and boy will we have a lot to talk about we will and I hope I hope he has a you know a little bit of a reckoning and he goes “All right well this is the role I got to play this is how I’m going to get it’s these are the shots I need to take.” I really I I hope that that happens i’m not going to tell you I have confidence but I have you know somebody would say the other thing is none of us I want Ace Bailey to succeed right every guy that we talk about it doesn’t matter if I like them as basketball players as long as they’re not malicious people i hope they all make you know $200 million like this is their window of this is your dream you’re pursuing it like great go after it go get it just go get it somewhere else oh man just a a shocking thing that happened last night ace Bailey decides to cancel the workout and Kyle in your story at all phy.com you had you had mentioned in the piece and that he had they had already had set up flight hotel dinner all the Now I don’t know who who might have been like we had the detail about Maxi coming in for the edgecomb thing i didn’t hear anything coming from LA man honestly given how much Paul has talked about him it would not have shocked me if he was going to be part of uh part of that whole process but yeah it was all all set up like I think honestly if he had just said “I’m not working out for anybody.” There’d be very little to talk about the fact that you set it up and you’re like “Yeah I’m I’m about this.” And then the night before you’re talking to people and they’re like “What the hell just happened?” That just happened that’s what just happened and then everybody’s talking about it didn’t uh This reminds me a little bit of Josh Jackson way back when i think he did that with the Celtics and Danny A didn’t he i think he canceled a workout at the last minute he did yeah he did but was were were Tatum and Brown already here or at least Brown was already there right yeah that’s this would have been 27 this was a year after Brown I think they all get jumbled mixed up in my head 18 and Jackson was the year before so that was 17 17 yeah yeah yeah yeah okay right right right why is he I’m trying to I felt like So Tatum was drafted in 2017 because Folultz was because he was a rookie in 2017 18 when he Yeah simmons was 2016 yeah so So yeah getting too old yeah there’s too many of these years yeah so all right folks listen him I would overlook this yeah this is just like the like I’ve said time and time again what he showed by where he wants to go he showed time and time again on the basketball court i think a lot of
