Mavericks Rumors Ahead Of 2025 NBA Draft: Daniel Gafford Extension, Kyrie Irving, Jared Dudley

before we get started with today’s show I want to hear from you guys how excited are you for Cooper Flack The NBA draft obviously takes place tomorrow night i’m very excited i got to put mine at about Cooperstein appreciate you guys for hanging out here on a Tuesday afternoon i almost said Wednesday but Wednesday would mean Cooper Flag is going to be a Maverick that comes up tomorrow it is NBA draft Eve on today’s show we’re going to talk more on Daniel Gaffford’s extension some details that have come in from that since the news broke last night the latest coaching news surrounding the Mavericks as they are expecting to lose another assistant coach and Kyrie’s decision to opt in or out of his contract is imminent all of that here on today’s show like I said hit that subscribe button hit that thumbs up icon too if you haven’t already we’ll start with Daniel Gaffford who if you haven’t heard by now did agree to the Mavericks with a for a three-year $54 million deal which does not come with a trade restriction this is a good deal for both the Mavericks and Gaffford and this is good uh salary cap maneuvering by the Mavericks which they definitely have to do some salary cap gymnastics in order to fit everyone in under their restrictions that they are under right now with the apron and the luxury tax and all of that so had the Mavericks given Gaffford his MA maximum extension which would have been $54.3 million the deal would have come with the trade restriction which meant the Mavericks would not have been able to trade Daniel Gaffford for the first 6 months of the deal after he signed it but since the Mavs left that $.3 million off and they gave him three years $54 million flat the Mavericks are able to trade Gaffford whenever so there is no trade restriction and this helps maintain his value yeah he was going to be on an expiring contract and now he’s going to have three additional years left on that deal so Daniel Gaffford’s value to the Mavericks as both a player and as a trade chip is either maintained or even elevated i love Daniel Gaffford the player he’s been absolutely fantastic in his year and a half with the Dallas Mavericks both starting and coming off the bench averaged 12 and seven last year over 70% from the field now all of his damage uh from the from the field excuse me is done with right around the rim within 5 to seven feet averaged almost two blocks a game last year as well in 57 games the only drawback with Daniel Gaffford is like Derek Lively and like Anthony Davis he definitely has some injury issues that the Mavericks are going to have to battle through look when all three of those guys are healthy they have the deepest center rotation in the NBA with Lively Gaffford and Anthony Davis if you want to throw him in there i think this is a really good deal for both sides as Gaffford gets his starting money that he wanted um in his next contract whether it be in free agency or from the Mavericks and the Mavericks get to keep Gaffford and maintain the deepest center rotation in the league which is what Nico Harrison set out to do when he acquired Daniel Gaffford and drafted Derrick Lively back in 2023 so I think this is a good move all around for both sides gaffford will be in Dallas I think for the foreseeable future but I do want to ask you guys this because this is a question that’s been going around Maverick’s Twitter since the Daniel Gaffford news broke will the Mavericks trade Daniel Gaffford before his contract expires If you think they will type T for trade if you think they will not type K for keep curious to hear what you guys have to say down there in the comment section i think it’s definitely possible that Nico Harrison would move him but it would have to be a hell of a deal to be honest if the Mavericks were going to do that i really don’t think that’s going to happen man i I think they’re going to keep Gaffford for at least next season because they see the value that he brings and I think Gaffford sees the value that the Mavericks bring to him as well we’ll get to the rest of today’s show here in just a moment but I do need to tell you guys about our sponsor move to keep the biggest team in the NBA together with Gaffford Lively Anthony Davis PJ Washington and Cooper Flag all the big athletic versatile wings that Nico Harrison set out to assemble and that’s what the Mavericks are going to roll with into next season now whether after that they move Daniel Gaffford that remains to be seen because after next year you have to start thinking about a potential Derek Lively extension after next year Anthony Davis will have two years left on his contract so that’s when you can start considering a Daniel Gaffford move i think the Mavericks would have to be blown away for a Daniel Gaffford trade to happen this offseason i I think it would have to be multiple first round picks if I’m being honest with you so I don’t think Gav’s going anywhere for at least this offseason let’s transition to the latest Mavericks coaching rumors here and Jared Dudley could be on his way not to the Memphis Grizzlies but to the Cleveland Cavaliers apparently Brian Scalabbrini went on his NBA Sirius XM radio show today alongside Frank Isol which by the way is a fantastic show go check them out if you haven’t already he said Jared Dudley could be leaving the Mavericks for the Cleveland Cavaliers when his contract expires now according to Mark Stein Dudley received a contract extension from the Mavericks and would only be leaving the Mavs for an upward trajectory so to speak so maybe uh Cleveland is offering him the lead assistant role whereas the Mavericks he’s only a part of the front of the bench staff which he has been for the last couple of years and I I do think that this would be a pretty significant loss for the Mavericks now there are other losses like God Shamgot who we talked about on yesterday’s show I think would be a more significant loss than Jared Dudley would be but Dudley is viewed as a future head coach in this league and it would be no you know it wouldn’t be a small loss for the Mavericks if this is confirmed and Dudley does leave for Cleveland your top three assistants from last year are all gone sean Sweeney accepted a job with the San Antonio Spurs to be their lead assistant under Mitch Johnson he’s gone jared Dudley could be leaving um the Mavericks for the Cleveland Cavaliers it sounds like that’s a done deal and he’s going to be gone and he’ll be a new assistant in Cleveland and Alex Jensen accepted the head coaching job at the University of Utah and he finished out the season with the Mavericks and then went on his way as well so your top three assistants are all gone the Mavericks have already hired Jay Triano to replace one of those three guys on the bench and I think they’re going to hire or at least they’re going to try to hire Frank Vogle to add to their coaching staff which obviously Kid and Vogle have that rapport and Markstein tweeted this the other day we’ll bring this one up once again where he said the natural response to for Dallas as all the coaches are possibly leaving is to sound out coaching consultant Frank Vogle who has been on the Maverick staff for the last year as that consultant but Vogle has been very comfortable to this point to stay in a consulting role while awaiting his next head coaching opportunity uh there are no current openings in the NBA right now except for the New York Knicks and it doesn’t seem like Vogle is going to be a part of that interview process as they’ve interviewed Taylor Jenkins a couple of others as well and it doesn’t seem like Jason Kid’s going to be an option for the Knicks either so there won’t be a head coaching opportunity for Frank Vogle this off seasonason now the question is does he want to remain a consultant or will he accept a front of the bench assistant coaching role with the Mavericks That remains to be seen but the Mavs are certainly interested in bringing Vogel in on a full-time basis and I tweeted this out earlier today you can go follow me on Twitter at jeff_coup27 that you see right there i think this Maverick’s coaching staff revamp is one of two things number one Jason Kidd wanted a refresh after four seasons with basically the same coaching staff that he’s had the entire time that’s certainly a possibility number two Nico Harrison is meddling in things that he shouldn’t be and that Jason Kid should be in charge of which is assembling his own coaching staff in this instance and you know I’ll be the first to want to on Nico Harrison and bash him i do think it’s number one i think after four years with pretty much the same guys with Sean Sweeney with Jared Dudley with all of those guys on the staff I just think Jason Kidd wanted new voices in the locker room I think he wanted to have a different set of ideas brought to the table with this new look Mavericks team that’s going to be played completely different than they have over the last four seasons with Jason Kidd so I sort of think that was his thinking there and they’re really not going um they’re not going to want to bring back the same people so I I do think that this is a Jason Kidled revamp of the coaching staff would Nico Harrison have some say in this Of course he would he’s Nico Harrison but at the end of the day I do think that this is uh JKid Power i could be completely wrong on that but that’s kind of my read on the situation right there help us get to 32,500 subscribers if you haven’t youtube.com/mathstv and as we sit here on at 1:52 p.m on June 24th we do not have word on whether Kyrie is opting in or out of his final year of his contract with the Mavericks he has until 10:59 p.m tonight to opt in or out and so we’ll see what happens um he’s got three options here which are number one is opt in and play it out which is by far the most unlikely scenario that happens i think there’s almost zero chance of that happening opt in and extend i think that one I would say that is slightly I would say that is the slight favorite of the three options and opt out and resign is obviously another option as well i’m leaning towards he ends up opting in and extending but I do think that Kyrie is going to be a Maverick either way we don’t have anything to worry about there but there is a fourth option and they could potentially push back the date for more time whether it be June 29th the day before free agency opens or whether it be July 6th when you can start actually signing players to uh deals with their new teams and you can start officially registering players for the new NBA season so I do think that’s a potential option as well um if the Mavericks and Kyrie just want more time to decide exactly how they’re going to get this done they certainly could do that but at the end of the day we know Kyrie is going to be a Dallas Maverick it’s just a matter of which avenue they decide to go down i’ll ask you this again i asked you this earlier this week on the show will Kyrie accept or decline his option If you think he will accept it type A if you think he
