Do the Cleveland Cavaliers NEED to Make a BIG SPLASH This Summer?! | What TRADE Could it be?!

Locked On podcast network your team every day since we last spoke yesterday there have been a couple of pretty big trades in the NBA more specifically in the Eastern Conference with the Boston Celtics of course the Celtics were this season the regular season rival of the Cleveland Cavaliers the Celtics won the title last year did not have the postseason that I think anybody including myself envisioned for them and now they’re kind of punting on I think this next season that is the message that I’ve gotten from them and that is something that does of course affect the Cavs and affects the rest of the Eastern Conference and I’ve spent a significant amount of time over the last week or so talking about where things stand in the East and just where the Cavs should be viewed and of course everything changed even more on Sunday night when Tyrese Hallebert tore his Achilles and it sounds like he’s not going to play at all next season he joins the ranks of Jason Tatum who’s probably not going to play much if at all next season damen Lillard who’s not going to play much if at all next season all three of those guys with Achilles tendon tears during the postseason so that certainly did shape the Eastern Conference a little bit going into this offseason and the moves that the Boston Celtics made are interesting from a Cavs angle on a number of different fronts and one of them is the Celtics are going to have a gap year next year they’re not going to be a championship contender they still have nice players they’re not going to be a bad team i would anticipate the Celtics still being a playoff team next year but they’re not going to be a championship contender they’re much more likely going to be I think there is a a better chance that the Celtics are in the playin than have homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs next year i think that probably the most likely outcome is them getting the five or six seed because they still do I think have a good coach i think they have a talented roster as stands now but I do think that that roster probably not done changing so far they’ve traded away Chris Porzingis he’s now a member of the Atlanta Hawks i’m going to talk about what that means in a second too and Drew Holiday traded from Boston to Portland and it sounds like Holiday is going to stay put in Portland it’s not some situation where he’s going to be rerouted through Portland again which happened on his way from Milwaukee to Boston a couple of summers ago but I suspect they’re not done shedding salary because what these two trades have done for them is it has gotten them out of the second apron which was a primary goal but I think the goal for the Celtics really was didn’t have anything to do with the aprons so much as it had to do with the tax as a whole they wanted to kind of put the be able to reset the repeater tax clock and getting out of the tax this year is something that they can do and I don’t think that they are a team that makes sense to be in the tax if they’re not going to be a championship contending team which I don’t think that they’re going to be so that is a team one more team out there that you look at from a Cavs perspective and say “Okay in theory we thought the Celtics probably were not going to be running back and be a championship contender but now that theory has met action because they have acted on it they have made these moves to lessen who they are as a basketball team next year they are much cheaper but they’re much less talented than they were anthony Simons is a nice player i think he’ll be a good fit there i think he’s going to score a lot of points for the Celtics but I don’t think that he is going to be able to replace a lot of the production that they’re going to be missing george Yang friend of the pod great guy to have in the locker room but getting him in exchange for Chris Apps Porzingis from a talent standpoint there’s a pretty big gap there now George is going to shoot a ton of threes for the Celtics but again that Celtics team is not one that I look at and say “Yes they are going to be championship contenders.” And I would not be surprised if we see something maybe on a more scaled down version happen with the Milwaukee Bucks this this summer i would not be surprised if we see them tear down a little bit too because they are also very expensive team that should not be looked at as a championship contending team because they’re not in that spot but as a result of this with Chrisaps Porzingis traded to the Atlanta Hawks that does in my opinion make another team in the Eastern Conference better of course I don’t think that this puts the Hawks at the same level or anywhere near the level of the Cavs but it led me to thinking what other teams in the Eastern Conference could make big moves are the Cavs one of those teams that could make a big move still and just what does this landscape look like because right now all of the betting markets tell you that the Cavs are the team to beat in the East and I know that there’s a very loud section of Cavs fans that does not want to hear that because they came up short in the postseason but the fact of the matter is the Pacers are not going to be great next year without Hallebertton he does so much for that team they’re not going to be great without him the Celtics are not going to be a true contender the Bucks are not going to be a true contender the Orlando Magic i think a lot of people should have doubts about what they’re going to look like in the postseason because I still don’t think that they have a point guard that they so desperately need that was actually their biggest problem last year aside from the injuries to Paulo and Fron and then you’ve got the New York Knicks who I don’t think that the sports books believe New York’s run to the conference finals was all that real considering not just Tatum’s Achilles but a lot of the other injuries that the Celtics were dealing with during that series so I still look at this and say “Yeah Atlanta got better yeah the Celtics got worse but the Cavs are still the team to beat in the Eastern Conference.” And that is I I find it I find it and going up and down through the East i don’t know that there’s a lot of opportunity left for teams in the East to make a jump up to like contender status i think Detroit is a team that could but I believe their lead decision maker went on record and said we’re not planning on being very aggressive this summer they want to take more of a we’re going to let our guys develop approach which I get that you don’t necessarily want to rush into that even if there is an opportunity because the Cavs have not proven it in the postseason either even if there is that opportunity in the Eastern Conference so right now the way I look at these things is there are three teams next year that I look at and say “Yeah they could win the Eastern Conference it’s the Cavs it’s the Knicks and it’s the Orlando Magic.” And right now the sports books FanDuel they believe in the Cavs more than they believe in Orlando more than they believe in New York now do those two teams have big moves left i don’t think Orlando does orlando exhausted a lot of its assets i don’t believe they have any more tradable first round picks that they could send out unless they want to trade Jaylen Suggs and I don’t think that his value is that high considering the injury history that he has and the injury in specific that cost him most of last season and ended his season prematurely i don’t think that he has a ton of value i don’t know that they would want to trade France Vagner i wouldn’t necessarily think so but if they don’t want to part with those guys they don’t have anything left of substance to go out and make a big move do the New York Knicks want to go out and make a big move i mean I think their big move kind of mirrors what the Cavs big move was last off season where they felt as if they exhausted who they could be as a basketball team which I do think they did i think the Knicks this year reached their peak and I think they needed some help and some luck to get to their peak and they fired their coach the same way the Cavs did after reaching their peak under JB Bicker Staff so they’re going to hire a new coach like that’s going to be their move i don’t know if they’re going to take the if they’re going to vault up the standings the same way the Cavs were able to by firing Baker Staff and hiring Atinson but I do think that’s going to be the move for the Knicks i don’t know that they’re I I think that they are in a point in their roster building cycle where unless they wanted to part ways with Carl Anthony Towns they sort of are who they are as a roster and they have a lot of really talented players they’re a very good team they’re a very good team but they are who they are as a roster i don’t know that that roster is going to change all that much so that’s why I do think they wanted to change the coach now could the Cavs roster change like is there a big move to make there because that is the one question that everybody wants answered that is the one thing with the Cavs that has been talked about the most this week because they were tied to Kevin Durant even though what I have been told by multiple sources is that it was much more of a check-in on what’s going on with KD you know what would the price be sort of thing i do not believe that the Cavs made a trade offer for Kevin Durant i think that a framework was discussed but there was never a “Hey let’s do this here’s our offer.” And the Suns declined it that is what I’ve heard from people so I think that they’re going to sniff around because that’s how the Cavs operate but while I don’t necessarily expect them to make a big move there’s a reason why I don’t think you can count them out and we’ll talk about that next right here on Lockdown Caps today’s show is brought to you by Open Phone if you’re running a business you know that every missed call is money left on the table think about the last time that you personally had an urgent need maybe for a plumber service provider of course there’s been a lot of power outages in Northeast Ohio with the extreme heat that we’ve had this week so maybe if you’ve had to had something handled and you call a service provider and they don’t answer the phone what do you do well you do probably leave a message there and hope that they get back to you but you also probably don’t wait for them to get back to you you leave that message and then you go “Okay who’s next on the list i’m going to call somebody else.” And if you’re a business owner if you are one of those service providers you don’t want to hear that because as they’re dialing as that customer is dialing that next number that is money going into somebody else’s pocket instead of your pocket that’s why you need Open Phone because Open Phone is the number one business phone system built to streamline and scale your customer communications all from an app on your phone or computer open Phone lets you manage business calls and texts from a single app and the shared open phone no missed calls no missed customers thank you again for making Lockdown Cabs your first listen today and every day you can find the show anywhere you get your podcasts Apple Spotify anywhere else drop us a fivestar rating leave us a nice review of course be a friend tell a friend about locked on Cavs could the Cavs make a big move there’s been a lot of speculation on Twitter of course with the Cavs being connected to Kevin Durant that they are going to go big game hunting this off season i do not believe that they are going to make a big move i would be surprised if it happens but I do think there’s a reason why you cannot rule it out if you’re the Cavs because think of the big moves that the Cavs have made the last several transaction cycles trading for DeAndre Hunter is a little bit different and smoke started to pop up about that a little bit before that trade happened i I the first I heard of it was about a month before the actual deal happened was hey you know I I do think the Cavs are interested here we’ll see what happens of course not much happens a month before the trade deadline but go back to the big move they made before that one it was Max Duce arguably where they were able to land him in a signin trade what we had heard if you want to go back to that summer what we heard going into that was oh Max Duce is probably going to be a member of the Pacers remember that’s what was reported i believe Mark Stein had it that the Pacers and Max Truce were very close on an agreement and then what happened a mystery team came in and who is that mystery team that mystery team was the Cleveland Cavaliers and go back a year before that September of 2022 Donovan Mitchell getting ready to report to training camp in Utah and this is of course months after the Jazz trade Rudy Goar to the Minnesota Timberwolves and it it feels all summer as if the Jazz and New York Knicks are just playing a game of chicken to see who’s going to blink first whether the Knicks are going to up their offer for Donovan Mitchell or the Jazz are going to accept something less and then lo and behold what happens we get the woge bomb that Donovan Mitchell is now being traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Cavs were I think at one point mentioned as a team that made a call but it was just kind of that it’s like yeah the the Cavs checked in it wasn’t a yeah there’s big interest from the Cavs or the Cavs are close to getting this done we were all very surprised when that move happened that wasn’t something that anybody expected to happen it was a shock to everybody it was breaking news it was not something anybody in this space was necessarily all that prepared for before that when the Cavs acquired Lowry Markin in a signing trade from the Chicago Bulls nobody had the Cavs as a potential landing spot for Lowry Markin but it happened the Cavs were able to find a way to make that deal work and there you go go back before that jared Allen of course he was a throwin and the Cavs were the fourth team to jump into what was at that point a three-team trade that landed Jared Allen in Brooklyn alongside Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving but the Cavs came out of nowhere to make that happen so my point here is if the Cavs are going to make some big move which again I do not believe is in the cards for them i think with where they sit financially it’s very very difficult there are a lot of different pieces and parts that do need to be moved if they were going to make a big move like there’s a lot of speculation that the Celtics are getting really big offers for Jaylen Brown right now would I be stunned if the Cavs called the Celtics about it no because that’s what the Cavs have shown they’re willing to do they’re willing to make the calls would I Would I be stunned if the Cavs traded for Jaylen Brown yes I would those are two very different things and I hope everybody understands that but if the Cavs are going to make a big move I don’t think it’s one that we’re going to hear about them as being the favorites to land somebody and I do think a lot of the bigger pieces that are going to get traded this off season sort of have already been dealt because I think a lot of people expected Drew Holiday to get traded and nobody expected him to come to Cleveland i think a lot of people expected Chris Daps Porzingis to get traded and of course nobody expected him to come to Cleveland and everybody everybody expected Kevin Durant to get traded nobody expected him to come to Cleveland uh Desmond Bayon is a little bit different which of course was never going to come to Cleveland but I don’t know that he was necessarily the name that everybody anticipated moving before this transaction cycle started so that is a little bit different because that one was kind of done in the shadows too but that is how the Cavs have operated they have been a team that have has operated in the shadows for most of their big moves so if they are going to make another one I don’t think it’s going to be one where we hear about them and I also don’t think it’s an accident even though I don’t think that they were even though I have been told by multiple sources here that they were not heavily involved in the KD stuff that it was much more of a check-in than making a trade offer for him we didn’t hear about it until after it was done we don’t hear about the Cavs interest in these things either until they make the trade for the guy or the guy has traded somebody else and it’s kind of like an empty the notebook uh a notebook dump type of reporting from ESPN or from the athletic whichever outlet ultimately has that story that’s sort of when we have found out about it if the Cavs don’t get it they’ve been very good about operating quietly i do think that’s a good quality to have in a front office but it’s also a thing to where if the Cavs are going to make a big splash I don’t think you’re going to hear about that splash until it actually happens i think that it’s going to be something that’s done quietly because that is what their track record is not to say every single thing they’ve done has been done quietly because that hasn’t been the case but I do think that their track record has been we are going to keep things just a little bit quiet we’re going to stay under the radar if it gets done great if not you’ll probably hear about our interest afterwards but that’s what the Cavs have done that is how the Cavs have operated so let’s talk about Jaylen Brown because he of course is now the biggest name that people think theoretically is available i would be one surprised if the Celtics traded him right now i think it’s probably more likely that Derek White gets traded than Jaylen Brown gets traded i just think that having a franchise cornerstone like that is more valuable than what his contract says and it’s not as if he’s not going to be very good when Jason Tatum is ready to go i think that the Celtics would like to keep those guys together of course these things can change anything can happen for the Cavs to trade for Jaylen Brown it would be much it would be I think like the Durant situation but I think it would be much more complex than that because part of the reason why I think the Cavs could make the call on Kevin Durant and have interest and maybe have it be somewhat of a realistic possibility even though it was never going to happen is because the asking price on Kevin Durant wasn’t very high look at the package that the Phoenix Suns got from the Houston Rockets for KD they got Jaylen Green who I don’t think is all that good they got Dylan Brooks who is fine but he’s mostly there for salary filler they got the number 10 overall pick this year which was Phoenix’s pick originally and I believe they’ve got five second round draft picks which who cares if Jaylen Brown is traded considering where Jaylen Brown is at in his career and his contract is very similar to that of Kevin Durant i don’t think it is dollar for dollar the same but it is in uh it’s in the same ballpark in terms of money so what the Cavs would have to send out financially is pretty similar to what they would have had to send out financially to get Kevin Durant but Jaylen Brown is 28 so he’s going to cost more he’s going to cost better players darius Garland would have to be part of that deal garrett Allen would probably have to be sent to a third team in which the Cavs really don’t get much back but most importantly the Celtics are going to want draft capital back too and the Cavs are not in a position where they can send draft capital out because all of theirs has been sent to Utah and then Utah of course has rerouted some of that to Phoenix but they’re not in a position where I think they can put together a package that the Celtics would want for Jaylen Brown because if they trade Jaylen Brown they’re in a position where it’s more than just a soft reset it becomes a pretty hard reset you kind of hope two or three years from now that’s when the Celtics could be back if you are running their operation if you’re Brad Stevens the general manager of the Celtics if you’re doing that you’re thinking “Okay we’re not going to be competitive in 26 we’re not going to be competitive in 27 maybe by 2028 we are back making an arrival into the postseason the way that OKC had their reset so to do that you need draft capital the Cavs don’t have that that’s why I don’t think that that trade would be something that the Cavs could pull off again if teams are calling the Celtics would not be stunned if the Cavs call but I don’t think that these two teams match up and I also don’t think that the Boston Celtics would want to send Jaylen Brown and the Cleveland Cavaliers i think that is something that matters in the same way that I don’t think Matt Ishbia would have wanted to send Kevin Durant to the Cleveland Cavaliers although the only difference is there the Suns would be the team getting a player in his prime back and not the Cavs where in this deal the Cavs would be getting an allNBA player in his prime coming back to Cleveland so I just don’t think that that is something that’s going to happen all right so the draft starts tonight the Cavs don’t have a pick we’ll talk about it a little bit i want to do more tomorrow when we know who is on the board and what things look like because could the Cavs make a trade tonight or tomorrow i think it’s possible around the draft we’ll talk about that next right here on Locked on Cavs today’s show brought to fir.com wayfair every style every home thank you again for making Lockdown Cavs your first listen or watch today if you’re watching on YouTube do me a favor hit that thumbs up button for me as we roll along here click subscribe and hit that notification bell so you don’t miss anything from lockdown Cavs the draft is here begins tonight the Cleveland Cavaliers of course do not have a first round pick they have two picks in this second round of this draft i would be stunned if the Cavs traded into the first round i would be very very surprised if that happens um I am expecting this night in terms of the Cavs making a pick to be a quiet one that said I can’t promise that it’s going to be quiet from just a transactional standpoint the Cavs have two picks tomorrow night in the second round those picks are number 49 and number 58 number 49 I believe is via the Milwaukee Bucks and number 58 is their own pick i would be surprised if the Cavs made two second round picks i wouldn’t be stunned if they did but I would be mildly surprised if they make both of those selections i do think that this could be a time because I do believe that the Cavs are looking to make trades around the roster maybe not big splashes and I don’t think you really make big splashes as the Cavs with pick number 49 and pick number 58 that’s just not a realistic thing to expect but I do think that that could be a way maybe to trade somebody like Isaac Aoro to trade somebody like Dean Wade i think that is something that could be possible around those picks so I think that those are the sort of moves that this week the Cavs could make i would be surprised if by the end of this week if the Cavs have not made a transaction that doesn’t mean they’re going to but I think it’s probably a little bit more likely than not that they do i think that they do want to make moves around the edge of the roster i think that they would like to be able to bring back Ty Drum and I think if they can unload Isaac Auroro’s contract that is something that makes signing Ty Drrome to a deal around $11 million just a little bit more palatable because that would be something that would save them quite a bit when you talk tax dollars because if you go back go look at some of the I Bobby Marks does a very good job of this over at ESPN go look at some of the the contract numbers that he has thrown out and how much money the Celtics have saved by trading two players by trading Drew Holiday and by trading Chris Abs Porzingis they’ve traded a lot of tax money out the door and trading Isaac Aoro if they want to resign Ty Jerome if they want to resign Sam Merrill that would save them a lot of money the one other thing I wanted to toss in here today I’ve not done digging on this i don’t know um but I do wonder if with Chris Apps Porzingis now being a member of the Atlanta Hawks after the trade I do wonder if Larry Nance Jr is somebody that could be available because I do think he is somebody that makes a lot of sense in Cleveland as that backup third big i think he is somebody that we could that could make a lot of sense there now is he willing to take a minimum contract to come back to Cleveland i don’t know i don’t have that answer maybe he is maybe he’s not but he’s an unrestricted free agent and now the Atlanta Hawks have Chris Haps Porzingis they’ve got Anaka Okongu i would not I would be very surprised if Clint Capella is back there but they’ve got a couple of bigs in front of him and I just wonder if maybe he lost out on some money by the Hawks making this trade if now they might not want to pay him what they could have paid him before and I wonder if he could be coming back to Cleveland i’ve not dug into that i’ve not done reporting this is pure speculation but I think that is something that as we look at free agency moves that could be one that makes sense for the Cavs to bring in as a third pick i don’t know we’ll see obviously he is from Northeast Ohio it’s got plenty of ties to this organization it could be a thing but this is pure reckless speculation right now i have not done digging into it but it is a thing that I just wonder that is where my mind went when they traded for Chris Apps Porzingis on Tuesday night i instantly thought well I wonder if this what this could mean for Larry Nance Jr and if that could mean something for the Cleveland Cavaliers but I will be back tomorrow we’ll talk a little bit of the first round of the draft any moves the Cavs make any moves that happen of course that affect the Cavs plus we will take a look who could be on the board for the Cavs in the second round if they still have both those picks by the time I go record on Wednesday night so thank you for making Locked on Cavs your first listen today On this episode of Locked On Cavs, Danny Cunningham (The Inside Shot, 92.3 The Fan, Cleveland Magazine) examines recent NBA trades reshaping the Eastern Conference landscape. He analyzes the Boston Celtics’ moves, including trading Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks and Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers, and their potential impact on the Cavaliers’ standing. Cunningham explores the possibility of a significant trade for the Cavs, discussing past unexpected acquisitions like Donovan Mitchell and Max Strus. He also previews the NBA Draft from the Cavaliers’ perspective, despite the team lacking a first-round pick, and speculates on potential moves involving their second-round selections. The podcast concludes with thoughts on Larry Nance Jr.’s possible return to Cleveland and the evolving dynamics of the Eastern Conference as the new season approaches.

  1. Duh. Garland, Allen, Okoro must be traded this summer… These media members & fans act like we are a dynasty when in reality we haven't even came close to making it past the 2nd round. It's truly mind boggling… they overvalue our players & undervalue other teams and their players…. they will say anything to justify running it back and losing in the 2nd round again bc they are emotionally attached to our current roster and can't accept that our roster isn't built for playoff success. They'd rather lose with the current roster than make the major changes that are necessary to make if Cavs want to compete for a title.

  2. Hawks are soaring…and they're NOT done…they have a large trade exception..pick 13 in a deep draft…the full mid level.exception…Look out for the Hawks. Cavs need to make a blockbuster with the NETS for Cam before the Hawks do!!! All eyes on the NETS..they have a TON of picks in this draft..and Cam…and the HAWKS…who are in WIN MODE NOW in the gettable East!

  3. It's strange to read the comment section, as it looks almost identical to last year's at this time. It feels like no one has learned anything, and everyone is stuck in a repetitive cycle with their opinions.

All these changes suggest that stability will have the advantage; life isn't like NBA2K, and in real life, personalities and skill sets must mesh.

I believe we may lose Sam and Ty to better offers, and that's okay. I am grateful for their contributions. I could see trading Okoro for draft capital, and I believe the answers to our roster questions lie within our current team. I'm willing to wait and see how things unfold.

For the fourth year in a row, I'm not calling for major changes; I just hope the Cavs will stop shortening their rotation for the playoffs. It hasn't worked the last four years, so it's time for some fresh tactics.

    Go Cavs!

  4. The Cavs shouldn’t be worried about the Celtics. Next year the Magic and the Detroit are gonna be scary. But then again it wont matter if the Cavs still hold on to the smaller guards.
