love draft when you fall in love with a guy because if there is one person who I think the majority of Grizzlies fans have truly found themselves falling in love with over the last few weeks leading draft night yet And then he’s pumping it into existence jb speaking it into existence the Grizzlies training up to get their guy Cedric Coward and we do have Mike Wallace on the phone who Sorry Mike working out i know you spoke with Coward yesterday what do you think about his fit here in Memphis Fit is phenomenal he had all great things to say about this Grizzlies coaching staff he talked about how the assistants talk trash during his workout but I will say this there are some things that he still has to do he’s coming off of rehab from the shoulder surgery that ended his season at Washington State after just six games but this is a guy and Devin look at this guy’s chain though man as he goes to the stage you’re gonna love his bling his bling look at that his grandfather was a 1976 Olympian hey that’s that change fit in well Memphis mike Wallace that’s what I’m saying and he loves Memphis he talked about how much you know the city meant to him in his short time there he diverted his plan to get to New York by making a late workout in Memphis on Monday then got on a plane and came up here Tuesday i talked to him Tuesday afternoon man he’s going to fit right in his story is very similar to you know Jaylen Wells you know this is a guy that started off at division three he was in on the division three level at will college and then he went from there to Eastern Washington and then from Eastern Washington to Washington State played six games there was going to go to Duke but this guy fits in he’s the dog that Zack Climman talked about wanting because of his defensive tenacity his ability to shot he could also be an athletic mike the Wi-Fi connection so excited go track him down got Cedric Coward you go track him down we’ll catch up with you later on the Grizzly let’s go in terms of what you hope for in a a moldable player 3 and D versatile can defend multiple positions can shoot true shooting percentage 71% in college he’s a mature player you watch his highlights i know we’ve talked about the bit of a mystery that goes with him from only playing those six games at Washington State however he has had a hearty career at at Eastern Washington at at Will Ammit before that a division three school in Oregon the question like as far as how will he translate to the next biggest level he’s ever played on in the NBA gary Parish and I talked about this on the podcast we did you know he had signed with Duke he was going to play at Duke this season john Shy believed in him john Shier yeah john Shy is not going to waste a scholarship on a guy who a can’t play at that level and but b John Shy is not going to waste a scholarship on a guy who he thinks isn’t going to be at Duke like that that shows you the leap this guy made like no one thought he was going to be in the NBA this year duke thought he was going to be playing at Duke this season but he showed up at the combine and the thing with when you just the eye test with Coward he looks like someone forgot to take the coat hanger out of his shirt his shoulders are giant he’s got that same kind of upper body shape of like a Shay Gilis Alexander long arm 72 reach you saw he had a 40 inch leap at the uh at the combine everything in the combine was off the charts and his shooting was amazing at the combine uh and you guys talked about I saw Deon on the Chris Vernon show we can ask Chris about this you guys were talking about his interviews and just watching him talk and hearing the way he processes and thinks about things he sounds mature he sounds smart he sounds like he gets it i kind of I kind of love the the real CC as they say jessica Benson i I got one complaint i got one complaint though they just showed him can we figure out where the NBA put the hats on our guys I hate that come on okay go ahead my bad sometimes they’ll they’ll bring him back out later and swap the hats real quick uh the Grizzlies uh in this move they’re sending number 16 a 2028 first round pick um one of the Orlando picks and two seconds to Portland for Cedric Coward yep take it this is the kind of player that you make a swing on because when you look at Cedric Coward he has the potential to be plugged into the wing instantly for this Grizzlies team it gives you a guy who can stretch the floor be part of a fast-paced system like the Grizzlies are going to be running under new head coach Tomas next year you’re not going to ask him to be a creator no you know like he doesn’t have to be anything that he is not naturally fit to play he’s physical he’s an impact defender could not love this pick more for the That’s my only I talked about that today is like I know you he’s a elite shooter good athlete but I want to see I mean when you get into the system with this with your coaching staff figure out a way to put a little put a little wiggle in his dribble put a little wiggle on the dribble because in the NBA we know how it goes if guys know that you can’t really handle the rock they’re going to push up on you a little bit so I’m pretty sure he going he going to develop that a little bit working with the training staff and all that kind of stuff but yo we got our guy bro i’m happy right now i’m I’m I’m pump my guy so just remember that the Grizzlies they kept the Phoenix first round pick next year which which as the the Suns keep making moves everything that pick looks like it’s going to be even better than we thought two weeks ago so the Grizzlies still have they traded next year that the Orlando pick next year they still have their own pick they still got a Phoenix pick next year they still have a lot of different things they could package and do stuff with uh I I think Coward’s going to be awesome man by the way I got Cougar Gold running through these draft pick coming out of Washington State tied with Klay Thompson we don’t like him though no we talked about Jaylen jaylen Wells is our Washington yeah yeah yeah we don’t we don’t know yeah that’s our representation now we got two more pack 12 forever pack 12 baby we lit hey Sedic Cow you are a Grizzly but obviously they they really did think that they could not get him at 16 this was their guy they identified it and as he continued to shoot off draft shoot up draft boards they were not going to wait and risk him not being there which would lead you to believe there was significant buzz that he was not going i I got to ask you a question JB cuz is there going to be a battle for number zero He’s 02 yeah is we got two Washington State guys that were number zero Who J rookie Well the rookie is going to probably have to give it up just don’t go jaylen Wells has immediately become an old head that’s what I’m saying bro so like are you officially vested as do I get to keep my number zero Talk about Coward and and the Grizzlies having to trade up to get him when Gary and I did our mock draft june 25th no that was the day that’s today two weeks ago we did this mock draft we had Coward going in the the mid 20s cuz And even that felt like a little high for him cuz two weeks a two three two months ago I’m sorry no one knew who the guy was he has slowly and kind of consistently made his way up the draft we heard earlier this week him kind of getting thrown around at 16 clearly the Grizzlies were like “We’re not going to wait any longer we’re going to go get this guy and take give whatever it takes to get him.” And they did just that i am obsessed that we have a Wamut University to the 11th pick in the NBA draft story in Cedric Coward that is pretty cool
