Denver Nuggets NO PICKS MADE in first round of 2025 NBA Draft
coming up we’ll break down Nuggets draft night in detail all the decisions the prospects what did they have to say why were they so quiet because the Nuggets didn’t do anything like we knew that they weren’t but we will go around the NBA and talk about the decision not to get into the draft and if the Nuggets will get into the second round all that and more on No Jinx on Locked on Nuggets you are Locked on Nuggets your daily Denver Nuggets podcast part of the Locked On Podcast Network your team every day welcome to Locked On Nuggets your daily Denver Nuggets podcast part of the Locked Onet your team every day thank you so much for tuning in today’s episode where we are with you every day especially when there’s so much news so many things going on always an interesting except except for tonight there wasn’t that much interesting to happen tonight for the Denver Nuggets and we’re going to cover that anyway my name is Ryan Blackburn i’m the host of the Pickax and Roll podcast on MHS writing for MHS over there he is Matt Moore senior NBA writer for the Action Network host of not a host of buckets as well and doing the HP basketball and Denver digs substacks make sure to subscribe to those today’s podcast is brought to you by Monarch Money take control of your finances with Monarch Money use code lockdown NBA at monarchmoney.com for your 50% off on your first year matt I had heard kind of at around pick 10 that the Denver Nuggets were probably not going to do anything tonight and yet I stayed anyway down at Ball Arena just gritted it out pizza and all we had a we had a fun little time down there but didn’t have much high expectations for the Nuggets actually doing anything lo and behold they didn’t do anything i don’t know what there was to do you know I asked Swipa this today and I’ll ask you the same question would you have done Strawler and Payton to try and get into the back half of the middle 10 so 15 to 20 if you’ve been able to trade into that range would you have done it i listened to the episode very good episode by the way people should listen especially to the third segment um I would not have done that there’s a part of me that thinks that it would be good financially if the Nuggets considered that given that Pton Watson is one year away from being paid Julian Strawther two years away from being paid but that’s the unfortunate reality that the Nuggets are facing that until they address the issues with the financial structure of their core four they’re always going to be running up against the money issue they’re always going to probably have to kick the can down the road with the rest of their roster so uh I probably wouldn’t do it it’s not a good enough value and it makes Denver worse yeah and like uh you know they could have gotten the backup center but I don’t necessarily know that a rookie is going to be the solution for your backup center problems right because it goes Yang at center at 16 Baron at center at 17 Clayton at point guard which you I don’t think you maybe you need I don’t know I don’t think you need may maybe I don’t know um at 18 You missed uh Thomas Sorber at 15 it was actually very interesting three Northwest Division teams all in a row take centers you were never ever ever ever going to get Sorber out of Oklahoma City they were you were never going to get that because uh if Sorber goes to San Antonio I think that the Thunder take Carter Bryant i think that could could you have uh could you have leapfrogged San Antonio had them do the same thing that they did with the Rob Dillingham pick last year with Minnesota and send your 2031 first round pick that’s the only way I think you could have done that they are not doing that for Payton Watson and Julian Strawther yeah no can’t do that so wasn’t really it didn’t really make make any sense here uh with what how the draft kind of played out um you know and I think fans don’t hate the the FOMO of missing out but it’s also like hey you don’t have a pick this year because you got Aaron Gordon i think that’s also something to always remember in these situations it’s like hey you have a pick next year and you don’t have one because you you got Aaron Gordon who’s been pretty good who’s been pretty awesome and pretty good to have around so it’s like you didn’t get return on value for that pick the final terms of that trade by the way Aaron Gordon and Gary Clark for Gary Harris RJ Hampton and Jace Richardson uh I think Denver does that 20 times out of 10 uh they they won with that deal it’s a great deal it’s exactly what you needed to become to become a contender and they did it they got it even with them winning the title because they traded for Aaron if Jace Richardson turns out awesome you know people are going to be like “Nuggets traded that pick.” Yeah uh the obviously the issue that I have with Denver and the way that they’ve used second round picks over these last like this last off season was frankly a travesty um it was especially with the the video coming out of Calvin Booth bidding against himself against the Suns to try to move up and select Don Holmes uh so hopefully the front office is not doing that this time around that’s my that’s my goal that’s the hope and uh I think it was pretty fine for them to not be active in the first round people People mischaracterize the idea of Denver not having a first round pick this year with them not doing enough not doing anything i don’t think that’s true and especially with the way that Denver’s roster is right now they don’t really need another first round pick in my opinion i I don’t I don’t see that as their need it took me like five years but I finally reached a point where everyone is with me and doesn’t want any more young guys it’s so nice to finally be at a spot where nobody wants any more young guys um you know I think next year will be important i think it’ll be important next year to get one i think that Let’s talk we have to live in the moment with Jokic because it’s so important but like if we take a step back and we look at many years for the Denver Nuggets I think one thing is looking ahead of a year um none of us on the show think that they should run it back i’ve made the argument of like why that why you can make that as an as a logical argument right but if you were still like “So do you think that they should be like “No I think that they should make trades and change up the roster.” And I’ve I’ve explained why because of the CBA and everything else but if we take a step back even if they run it back this year there will inevitably be change after because of the apron because of contracts expiring because of various things like they will just be different and so I think like next year you will be in a position to be like okay who are the Nuggets going to draft who do they need what kind of talent can they build um what I think is is kind of a bummer is that I would have thought like Christian was a huge hit christian was a huge huge hit and it’s still possible that Payton or Julian have really good seasons coming up but it is disappointing that they haven’t had anybody else pop except for the fact that when I look back you know who is considered to be like an elite team at developing talent was the Raptors and then they went through this period where it was like Chris Bucher and like um Gary Trent Jr grady Dick Jacobe Walter like you could on and on grady looks looks pretty good and I think Jacobe Walter’s actually gonna be pretty good looks fine like all right sure but they’re they’re definitely in that same tier as I’m like hey I think Peyton Mat’s gonna be pretty good so I don’t know if it’s maybe it’s not reasonable to expect them to just like pop off home runs every single time when they’re drafting in the 20s it’s probably not i think it’s fair to and maybe Christian Brown was their one hit for a starter like they got their starter and maybe that is just the expectation that people should have is that over the course of a three fouryear period it’s really not fair for a team drafting in the 20s to generate more than one starter in those situations and who knows maybe Don Holmes turns into that we still haven’t seen him play a minute of basketball but I do think that like for me it was not just like a talent thing it’s a roster thing denver has 12 roster spots that they’ve committed to and if they’re going to run it back for the most part I want them to spend all three of those roster spots on veterans that they can add to the team right now and because the team needs to be good right now and if they don’t do that uh and they trade into the second round in this year to be cheaper and to spend more money against the tax uh I’ll be a little bit disappointed but not surprised given the I think the verdict and the repeater tax increasing and things like that uh but we’ll see we’ll see what ultimately happens with it but no picks for Denver in the first round uh when we come back we’re going to talk about the rest of the NBA some of the other eventful things that happened around the league and interesting things that we saw that we want to talk about we’ll be right back here on Locked on Nuggets back at it Locked on Nuggets thank you so much for tuning into the show Matt there were some other things that happened around the NBA it was mostly chalk I thought for the first kind of eight or nine picks or so and then some things went off the rails in the middle of the draft what was the most kind of intriguing interesting thing to you that happened tonight uh Ace going five to Utah when it didn’t seem like that was the team that they that he wanted to draft him was interesting i’d heard Danny Ang really was high on him and then it was like “Oh Boston Ang is in charge now and he’s not really that.” And it turns out no Austin was was probably in line with with Danny on that um that was interesting trey Johnson going to Wizards and then Atlanta kind of doing the moves that they did like Atlanta’s had like a really interesting offseason like they just had like a really fascinating offseason brooklyn keeping all their picks baffling really baffling yeah none of us really understand it i think they probably got caught where they didn’t want to and were just like can’t move them so guess we’re taking these guys um those were interesting malawash falling to 10 was interesting to me because I thought he was going to be the first big off the board i think ace going five meant that New Orleans had Fears when I think they thought Fears was going to be gone because like the Raptors didn’t think that Malawash was going to be there and the Raptors passed on him to take Colin Murray Bole so that was interesting the run on Bigs in that late in that mid first round was interesting i thought that was uh interesting one not as much player movement as I thought i thought we were going to have like a really wild night of a lot of like this guy’s being traded for this pick and it just seems like it does seem very much that you can’t do player deals on draft night and I don’t know why that is but we just don’t see it very often for players to actually get moved on draft night anymore we used to see it so much more i was really waiting for that to happen with all the discussion that hey this one could have some fireworks this could be really crazy watch out you don’t know what’s gonna happen and then uh well 30 picks in and we’re like the best player that was moved tonight was Mark Williams and unfortunate for for our guy uh our guy Meech uh who has to go back to the Charlotte Hornets who didn’t didn’t seem like he was very happy there and I I doubt that he’s long for there either uh with them adding Trey Johnson and and getting back Brandon Miller and LaMelo Ball for this year uh our guy CT Fazio in the chat that Pelicans trade was bad despite getting fears and queen what did you think like what do you think they were doing man 2026 unprotected pick most favorable of the Pelicans and the Bucks are you kidding me like that’s crazy yeah yeah i don’t I don’t think the front office changes are going to be positive for the Pelicans i like the new combo it’s just giving up like Yeah so you know I was talking to to my guy Brandon Anderson on Buckets and he was railing against it because of the fit with Zion and I was like well well let’s say that Zion’s just like not around for for one reason or another you know and you get Fierce Herb Jones Trey Murphy Derek Queen Eve Mei that’s like a good fun lineup with Trey with Trey as like your guy if you believe in Trey the way that they do I think it kind of makes sense so but the problem is just like yeah the unprotected pick is is is too dangerous they think they’re closer than than everyone else does and we’ll see what happens like if they if they finish if they surprise everybody and they wind up because like this team was a playoff team two years ago so no like they Yeah but they were eight seed and they like they in a down year for the entire Western Conference they were an eighth seed and it just like they were they were surprising hang on because that year the Pelicans were had 49 wins Ryan like I’m think Okay I’m thinking of a different year my bad okay i mean they were still the eight seed that’s they were 49 wins in the eight because that’s the West yeah yeah that’s that’s that’s what we deal with where you can take stock in Washington and and actually not be laughed at that that much for taking stock in the 18 win Wizards uh because like they play in the Eastern Conference they actually are they actually do have a lot of talent but um yeah the Pels I just think that’s the thing is I think they they think that they’re closer to that team and that last year like okay I’m playing devil’s advocate here okay i understand if it’s just like Yeah what are they doing and it’ll probably work out disastrously because nothing New Orleans never gets to have anything good think about this like they draft Anthony Davis yeah and they go for it by putting instantly talent around him and then everybody’s like “Why’d you do that why why’ you give up all these picks and assets when you could have built slowly when then if they don’t do that it’s like why won’t you go make a move?” Um they have Anthony Davis he’s constantly hurt they finally make the playoffs they beat the Blazers he immediately asks out like Rich Paul gets hooks up with him that summer and that’s it uh they get Zion and then this this nightmare happens like it’s one thing after another with them it’s just one thing after another but I will say if you’re if you look at last year and you’re and you important thing for me when evaluating injuries is oftent times less about who was hurt and how much money was hurt and last year a lot of money was hurt and that to me is like an argument for look we’ve moved some of the money around we’re expecting to have our guys more available and that’s going to get us in a better position to do this now I don’t have any confidence because they still they keep having these injury problems and a lot of that’s because they don’t put the their facilities don’t seem to be good enough but you go from it from that perspective and you that way the pick doesn’t look as disastrous it’s still bad return like it’s still there’s no way to adjust it like it’s still just bad this pick is worth excell because I’ve said this that um players don’t really have there’s not like a market for players and that’s why you can’t be like well he went for this so this is guy’s got to go for this that’s not how it works but picks are different like picks definitely have like a value and going from 23 to 13 and giving up the 26 it’s a bad deal in general yeah we we’ll see how it works out and and whether they whether they make it happen but Atlanta obviously capitalizes on that in a big way they had a very very interesting few days um they are they’re a team to obviously I think take stock in like Trey has never really played with a pick and pop big before and I’m not exactly like thrilled about the idea of Chris Porzinga staying healthy for an entire season for them either like I was with Boston but they have an identity now that I think you can really center that around and we’ll be interesting to see what else they continue to add to that group um other teams other teams anything interesting else that you thought that happened no like I I’m not very I’m not very blown away by what happened tonight i’m just kind of like okay all right cool yeah like I think it’s a bummer that VJ went to Philly it’s a really good pick by them it’s just like I liked him a lot as a prospect and now I’m like well he’s in there with Maxi and McCain and Grimes and PG and Embiid and Maxi so it’s like could really sympathize with Ace Bailey I think and his his viewpoint there like what opportunity is is is he gonna get you know uh Kibble to me was a very uninspired choice by the Hornets i was just kind of like “All right it’s fine it’s safe i get it you don’t want to blow another draft pick the way you have so many times seems like he’ll be fine.” Um the Grizzlies going for Cedric Coward I thought was really was interesting it was like a very like being aggressive and going again relying on their draft acumen is probably smart even if I’m kind of like I would like it if you guys got some the ability to win now because he could win now but Jaylen Wells was immediate impact player last year zacked was an immediate impact player last year so Coward can definitely do that as well uh Yakonis falling to 20 that was the weirdest win for me i like Yakonis a lot and I thought that was a I think people missed out and they’re going to regret that and he’ll probably be very good for Miami i’m not going to pretend to know much about him he just strikes me as a backup he strikes me as like not a ceiling razor for them and they kind of are in the need of ceiling razors but who knows maybe they’ll just trade for Giannis next offseason like they like they’re definitely not going to include Yakonas for so we’ll see um what was the like what was the one thing you wish happened tonight that didn’t actually happen like from a Paul George yeah Paul George getting traded to either Utah or Brooklyn I don’t think that the I think the Jaylen Brown stuff was never as serious as it kind of got burbled about um I don’t think that was ever going to happen i think Boston was always going to hang on to Jaylen and as long as Jaylen wants to be there I think Jaylen’s going to be with Boston and but Paul George I think is like an opportunity like I want good things for Paul George and so I kind of want him to find a spot however it’s necessary however it happens i’d like him to have one more arc of his career that’s a little redemptive because Paul George really has had a tremendous career and it sucks the way that he’s kind of like viewed now as a punchline i think that sucks for a guy that I don’t think he’s done i don’t think he’s nearly the kind of personality or obnoxious as some entities that signed three-year extensions today have been yeah I would uh I would concur um it’s going to be hard in the second apron era for him to find the right fit it just is like especially at this at this stage but hey anything is possible and a team just has to be willing to try okay let’s take another break when we come back we are going to discuss uh whether the Nuggets can get back involved in this draft and if they actually should we will talk about it next here on Locked on Nuggets all right now it’s time for everybody’s favorite ad read our sure to check out Skims we will be right back here on Locked on Nuggets i hope you enjoyed that great locked on Nuggets thank you so much for tuning into the show final segment here very excited we’re going to talk about the second round Matt any uh any second round prospects that dropped here that you you you had your eye caught on that you would hope that it seemed like the Nuggets would really eyeball and try to get in there get in there for [Music] you can say no by the way because like I at the second round hey like they’re only showing Taco Bell commercials at this point I don’t see any way that you ever have any success drafting in the back around as an organization spending opportunity spending draft capital to do that just taking a chance on some guys uh would you have any any any thoughts any ideas on on some guys that they could get uh how about on the Ringers draft guy next the second best prospect available is Kulk Brener from Kraton um wingspan 76 he’s 7 foot one i just I am of the opinion that they should stock at least if DeAndre does not return that they should stock at least two centers and then rotate through them and I think it’s fine i think backup center is honestly maybe the one position that I wish that they would use the two-way spots and second rounders more on i think that that’s like how to do it is just like rotate through them non-g guaranteed deals keep it moving chew through those kind of guys um if they take guys later in the draft i know a lot of I was actually a little surprised that Rashier Fleming did not go in the first round i heard that there was a lot of smart teams that really liked him so he’s a guy that if there was an opportunity to get into I do kind of wonder just what is the what is the upside of Denver adding a player in the second round what is the what is the purpose of that like what does it do it’s a great question i don’t know i think that Denver like if if they are going to very much focus on internal developments and if that’s going to be a part of their program going forward then I do think that that it is something to actually consider because we’re now talking about David Ottoman we’re talking about uh John Wallace and Ben Tenzer and the idea that they have and and the way that they’re going to kind of I think revamp a little bit of the player development as you’ve kind of talked about uh if that is a massive change to the organization then having young players to take advantage of that talent I do think is very important uh so we’ll we’ll see what they ultimately do i do like Kog Brener and the theory of adding a big man uh it’s just somebody who is a young sevenfooter that they can continue to invest in and at least like you don’t have to play a guy like that every night and that’s kind of the point in investing in the second round that’s that’s very very important so I don’t know can I ask you something sure would it be worth them trading a swap for multiple seconds in the future who are they trading it with because if it’s in if it’s like a team that’s in relatively the same range with them I would say yes it’s an Eastern Conference team let’s say it’s only they’ll only do it in the East okay uh I mean of course I I would be one of one of the problems that they’ve run into is they just don’t have anything they they don’t have anything to get themselves activated again on this front so if you told me that you could get three second rounders including one in this next year’s draft and two in the future for a for a first round swap that is like we’ll say top four protected then I would I’d be willing to do that absolutely like if if Brooklyn wanted I don’t think Brooklyn most of Brooklyn’s contracts I don’t think they want they don’t they don’t have anybody they’re like trying to dump right but if Brooklyn wanted to send a contract out and gave you four f four seconds for a 2029 swap Dario especially if they take the money yeah I was thinking like the other way where you take back a contract from from Brooklyn may maybe it’s both maybe you you send them Dario yeah you send out Daario he goes overseas you save the money on that that that makes sense right because I that would be a very easy way to kind of refill the coffer here because one of the things is just like we can’t even diagram hypothetical ideas for this team because we’re just like well they need seconds to do that and they don’t have any you know and it’s like it’s debilitating at this point so they are they are in this position by their own valition of course like nobody’s nobody’s acting like it’s anything other than that um but they are in this position where they need to revitalize themselves they need to revitalize the end of their bench and I think what you were talking about with the late first round picks and whether those guys develop or whatever I think is fair but if you have a whole bunch of expectations for late first rounders to eventually develop into starters or develop into stars or whatever that’s that’s a that’s a tough cookie to crack like it’s that’s not going to happen if you’re developing second rounders and trying to turn them into role players try to turn them into a seventh man or an eighth man or a ninth man that’s way more viable it just is so I I love the idea i actually think that that’s something that they should do now uh CT said it here I said it earlier in the show for this particular year may not be the right call because they are so bereft of roster spots in general and I do think that they need to add veterans in the free agency market as much as they possibly can but like that’s the difference between minimums and second round picks it’s not it’s not that crazy yeah Charlotte’s like an interesting one so Charlotte’s definitely willing to take on contracts for assets and they have players that definitely I don’t think that they are attached to like Daycoon Jeff nick Smith Jr right um I don’t know how attached they are to Musa Date they should be he’s good they should especially after they traded all their centers right um so like those are but they have a bunch of second rounders partially from Denver so doing a deal with them to get a bunch of second rounders back probably makes like a little bit of sense here do you So the problem is is that if you’re taking on a couple of those guys like are those guys going to spend time on the end of Denver’s bench or are you going to wave them hm because that’s the you’re running into the same roster spot problems i think Well I mean I think you you got to look in you got to look at it and be like are any of these guys guys that you can talk yourself into nick Smith Jr i could talk myself into as an off the dribble kind of scorer some some spacer but he’s a little small daquin Jeff I just I don’t know much about him i think that like he just strikes me as the ultimate end of bench guy like if you took back Grant Williams coming off the injury and you sent Sarich and whatever else was necessary to complete the deal yeah the Zeke for Grant Williams is the question here um the question is just like how valuable do they think the swap is that’s kind of the key here maybe you give them the option maybe you give them the deferral option 2031 2032 of being like you get to defer if you don’t want to in 2031 and like if I was on the phone I’d be like look we I if I’m Ben Tenzer I’d be like I am absolutely getting fired by 2032 this is a horrible deal there’s no way like we are there is like we are toast when Jokic retires we know that by that point LaMelo is going to be a four-time all-star brandon Miller’s on his third no don’t try and Don’t They’re actually smart now don’t try and do that to them um I think Peterson’s actually smart you can’t do that you could have done that to I think Mitch to Mitch but not not not Peterson could Nipple’s gonna be making a making a play i actually think that that might that that’s something that they should definitely look at is just being like “Yes we’ll give you the option of 2031 2032 on the swap.” And like you need to understand if you do that it’s like look you might be giving them a top four pick like this could be catastrophic in terms of what it looks like at the moment but it’s like this w opens your window to compete for a title with Jokic which is what everyone agrees you have to do that’s the type of move that I think I think that they they honestly need to do and like that’s the type type of move that I think is very difficult I think probably at this point for for ownership that has kind of made the point of like the Nuggets are going to exist after Nicole Joic like that was a you know we you know Swipe and I kind of talked about that today is like I’ve got I’ve got some qualms with the way that you framed it i understand what you’re trying to go for i do uh but I I also understand Nuggets fans knowing that this is the window and they know they’re going to be real bad after this maybe you never know that’s true so you heard it here first folks uh the Nuggets are going to like Charlotte’s got the 33rd and 34th picks tomorrow denver’s trading for both of them for Not now not now you don’t do it now you do it for Just throwing it out there here’s the ones you want you want the 2026 back from Denver yeah good call you want the 2027 from Miami okay you want the 2027 from Portland or New Orleans and you want You can’t ask for both of yours back you want the 2029 second rounder from Phoenix definitely that one i think Charlotte’s going to rather give up their own than that one yeah and you and you’re basically being like “Hey you got most of our seconds we only want one back you get to keep the rest of our seconds and and you get one of our swaps so you get to really fade us.” I like this this is a good plan call it in Ryan i I’m I’m Guys I’m already down there we’ll see what happens i’ll I’ll I’ll float the idea to Ben when I see him in the hallway everybody that is going to do it for this episode of Locked on Nuggets thank you so much for tuning into the show uh Swipe and I will either be back tomorrow night or Friday uh if Denver obviously if they make a big move then we will react to it in the moment if not we will probably wait until Friday in order to give kind of overarching thoughts on the draft and everything that happened uh but very excited to continue to give you guys great coverage looking forward to it thank you so much for tuning into this episode of Locked on Nuggets [Music] oo Denver trade

New Orleans is buggin. Portland took Yang like 25 picks early lol
A lot of missteps. VJ doesn’t make sense with Philly at all. He’s not even a kind of good pick for that roster.
Chris Vernon of ringer and memphis media fame wanted them to pick Coward. I’m stoked for Verno
Kasparis is probably gonna be a lot better than Egor Demin.
Would be great to get more Matt Moore solo episodes
Paul George made his contract dispute public then went and signed the contract he wanted to casually play retirement ball. I don’t think his personality is terrible either, but his lack of self awareness is astounding
24:29 yuck yuck yuck
25:30 i agree. Teams are gonna have to become draft savvy and cycle through talent in shorter contracts. That will be the norm by 2028 when a couple of teams are completely crippled by the cba. Hopefully we aren’t one of them. Better break ground on a training facility soon…
27:35 Cal Booth nuked us. Such a jag-off
Ryan- cheer the fuck up dude. They won a goddamn championship. You think Indiana would trade our “situation” for theirs?
3 and d wing number one priority, then backup center, then role player shooter and backup PG (given Russ won’t resign)
Well, this front office will continue to be Tim Connelly aggressive 😂
Nice haircut Ryan !
I hope they dont take anyone from draft. Because we just keep stacking these young semi-useless players and paying them, but when we need them to play they shit themselves.
