and they’ve made their selection with the sixth pick in the 2025 NBA draft the Washington Wizards select Trey Johnson from the University of Texas trey Johnson the 65 guard out of Texas sharing this moment with his dad Richard his mom Priscilla and of course his younger siblings as well trey actually wore number 20 in college because his dad wore it during his collegiate playing career and this is just a incredible special moment for this family a really heartfelt moment together trey’s coach at Texas Rodney Terry he compared his work ethic to Kevin Durant one of Trey’s favorite players in the NBA and says “You literally have to drag this kid out of the gym he’s someone who wants to be there all the time he shot 40% on threes led the SEC in scoring as a freshman but what are your thoughts Jay on how his style will translate to the next level?” Well it translates really well because he’s got an elite NBA skill he can really shoot the ball and I think he’s the best overall shooter in the draft conanipple is the best catch and shoot guy and it’s not close with the percentages he shoots but look at that suit i didn’t notice the uh we have to show off your short shirt top he looks like a banker down low he’s like a guitarist for AC/DC we won’t tell everyone that you’re actually wearing a short suit right now but but he he’s an outstanding shooter and he shoots it equally well off catch and shoot situations and off the dribble who’s 41% catch and shoot 39% off the dribble he gets separation he’s just a a gifted scorer that is a natural shooter he gets it off quickly you know he’s got a wingspan of 610 quick release quick release and he’s got beautiful form and he really does a good job of moving without the ball he can do it off of screens he did it there in a a pick and roll situation but he’s just natural as a scorer i think he can improve his defense but as you mentioned Malikica he led the SEC in scoring at just about 20 points per game the last two freshman to do that were Cam Thomas and Brandon Miller uh he had a 39point game earlier this year that was uh the most by a freshman in division one and he 89 threes also the most by a freshman uh in division one he had 15 games of 20 points or more i think the the main thing for him is to become a better defender and to get stronger both of which he can do yeah and I had a lot of time I had I got an opportunity to spend a lot of time with Trey Johnson you know one of my best friends was his assistant coach Brandon Chappelle and allaround great kid those nothing about it’s all about basketball with him but when I look at Trey Johnson I see a lot of Chris Middleton the way that he’s able to create off the dribble get separation the floers in the lane and like Jay just highlighted the best shooter overall shooter in this draft and quite the history here when you look at the highest drafted players out of Texas
