[Music] d you have done it again [Music] oh M with a block and the Blazers win the series for the first time in TV what is up guys welcome back to Rip City Rundown draft recap and this is as of 7:41 uh Pacific time so it’s we’re around like the 22nd pick right now but we wanted to just go ahead and jump on i don’t think the Blazers are going to be jumping back in in the first round tonight um the Blazers traded down from their 11th pick we’ll get into what they got and if that was a good trade or not and they drafted Hansen Yang i really hope I’m pronouncing his name right hansen Yang out of China a 72 center that not only was shocking for us Blazer fans but just NBA fans around the league um he wasn’t even in the green room he was sitting in the crowd um cool video of him getting drafted I’ll say but uh so many ways we can go why like that is the main question why i’ve totally spa you’re right i spaced on the fact that he was in the crowd that’s hilarious um All right this I’m just going to I’ll tell you just my just my process tonight right so Blazers have 11 right we’re like I think it was like Carter Bryant Fleming Yakos Jonas it was potentially Derek Queen it was like a new as Newell it was even like we but so anyway god so many thoughts draft goes how we thought honestly Jazz with big stones to take ace of five like kudos to the Jazz um the next couple pick I think the first shocker was uh Demen at eight and then the Raptors passed on Malawak and at this moment I was like wow that would be great value for the Blazers why would the Blazers take a center though you don’t you don’t need a center you don’t need a center little did we know right so we and the Suns end up doing taking Malok which by the way they also trade for Mark Williams so size is just Well it seems like that’s a thing tonight um teams that missed the playoffs in the Western Conference uh just want to stack up on centers apparently so then we have the 11th pick and all our guys that we thought we were going to get are pretty much still on the board because of teams and like the Nets and the Raptors maybe quote unquote reaching a little bit like we never I mean Demon I guess was an option everyone was an option for us at 11 um so we trade back we trade 11 to 16 with Memphis who trade up to get uh Coward cedric Cowell yeah cedric Coward from Washington State played at Willck College East Washington kind of a Pacific Northwest guy so I think there were some people who wanted him just for the story but guys we’re not here to write books we’re here to build a basketball team um sorry anyway um and I think that trade we got in return a magic believe it’s unprotected i’m not 100% sure 2028 first from Orlando as well as two seconds so if you want to do the transit of property thing we we recouped the stuff we sent out in the Simons trade if you want to look at it that way it’s a little overall hey good good trade to trade down like was very happy was smart then the zinger or should I say the Zanger came came in i don’t know huh the Yanger i don’t know what I’m saying yeah but like you got you got I don’t know anyway so Yang gets picked by the Blazers and I think everyone was super shocked still am still am uh I’m processing here and I think for people who just are listening I think this podcast will just be us like working out our thoughts on like why we did this and it’ll probably just naturally fall to towards pro Blazers and optimistic outcomes because why would you talk about like this guy’s a bus let’s just I’m I’ll set the scene he’s 19 years old 72 he turns 20 tomorrow in the I’m assuming just the Chinese basketball league the main one he averaged 16.6 points a game 10 rebounds 2.6 assists one steel 58% from the field 33% from three on three so he can technically he I watched a couple of his highlights like he has a good looking jump shot but he’s no shooter necessarily yet and let’s just start with the positives uh Jake Fischer is tweeting that a Nuggets executive or Nugget source texted him and said Chinese Jokic and uh that definitely piqued my interest and then you watch the highlights and you’re like you you hear that one thing and then you let your mind race when you watch the highlights and you’re like this is this this is kind of Yokuchi i’m not going to lie but like okay let’s do pros and cons of let’s go back and forth like pros pro and then a con you want to do like pro you want to do Okay you want to go back okay we’ll go back and forth or do you want to do like Do you want to do all the pros first and we just keep going we can do the pros first let’s do all the pros and we can both say both but let’s just go until we literally like let’s be super optimistic we can’t think of anything all right i’ll I I’ll start um Okay you started with Chinese yogic i will say um No I’m kidding mhm no I will say I appreciate I can’t remember ever the Blazers being that team that just shocks the NBA so if I like Mike Schmidz has a track record he likes his guys for context he’s watched them they’ve been on the Blade He’s been on the Blazers radar for over two years so I will say like I don’t mind taking a swing here it’s a swing you could and that could be a con too to be honest but that’s my first pro i will say my first pro is kind of going off of that the Blazers reportedly have been eyeing this guy for two years and have been to China to watch him brought him in for a workout when not a lot of teams did I would assume at least for like a big for workout so the fact that the Blazers are kind of like this is their guy I can appreciate um don’t don’t don’t don’t say but though we’re not we’re not at cons here i want to say though I’m going to try to go back on these last couple podcasts i want to say two or three podcasts ago i think I’m not saying it was my prediction because if I say prediction I probably predicted five or six different things that could have happened on draft night in the last six podcasts but I want to say I was like honestly because we’re kind of outside the top seven eight where it’s pretty sure we know who’s going then i wouldn’t be surprised if the Blazers just have a guy and overdraft and I said I wouldn’t be mad at it did I expect them to overdraft by like possibly 20 or 30 no but again this is the pro section so I will digress yeah uh my next pro is I think this is signaling a time lord trade which I like yep i would like to get them out of out of Portland respectfully i think they’re great players but we clearly have too many centers um my next pro for me as weird as this sounds I just kind of loved that he was in the crowd uh I feel like that shows that he’s like probably loves basketball because why would he be in the crowd if he didn’t expect to go i hope and it could be just one of those videos in three years from now when Blazers are playing playoff basketball and Yang’s getting quality bench starter who knows bench minutes we’ll say bench we we will temper our expectations he’s getting bench minutes because obviously clinging to starting and being a decoy um and he dunks on somebody and everyone’s going to be like remember when Yang was drafted 30 spots higher than he was supposed to go and he was in the crowd look how far he’s come so I don’t know that’s a pro I guess fair i’ll say a pro is he he at least fits the identity that we want to be which is huge defensive oriented wingspan shot blocking like he’s fits that that’s another pro um I will say pro honestly this is like a genuine pro i’ve just thought about this oh were the other ones not they were but well my most recent one was not a genuine pro probably him being in the crowd really doesn’t do anything i I like to see it the video was cool though like I will be rooting for him of course um but I’m pretty sure he’s represented by Rich Paul and I don’t think Rich Paul would just be representing some random Chinese prospect probably saw some potential in him and that’s just another big NBA name that sees potential in him so I mean that’s that’s something okay I can I have another pro i have another pro okay I don’t have anymore my last pro and this is we’re at the bottom here uh this would only become a pro if more information comes out and he isn’t like ne if he see of him again like hopefully he’s not a summer league and see you later kind of guy but he he won’t be obviously but no um what drake Powell got drafted by the Hawks that’s just interesting drake Powell interesting it’s a cool pick go ahead i was going to say that in if we look back on this draft like I’m just I’m curious if there were other teams in the vicinity of Portland in the draft order that were looking at him and you have to think so you have to think so at least one so I’m going to I’ll say a pro is the Blazers got who they wanted look the Blaz look as much as this is like this is where it goes in my first con is I’ I haven’t heard of him that’s my first con i’ll just say right now that’s my first con but part of that if you want to be honest it’s my fault so I’m I can’t Yeah unless I see with my eyes that he’s not good i’m not going to blame the organization for getting draft capital and then getting their guy like forget what the mocks say man and I mean if Mike Schmidz if that’s their guy it’s their guy and they get to live with the consequences if he sucks but I keep going mine’s irrelevant to the Blazers keep going i was going to say just as fans it’s a little disingenuous to be like “Oh I hate to pick because you didn’t want to go do your research.” And also I see fans all like the past two drafts in the second round were like there’s this guy like Chamch or something from like the NBA Africa Academy or whatever and people were like “Can the Blazers please get them at 55 never heard of them again.” So like I I f we don’t have the best opinion when it comes to evaluating talent so I we reserve the right to get upset when we watch our the games and we get to see if he’s good or not then I respect fans opinions because we see him but like it’s also like uh or whatever like how many people actually watched them and everyone wanted them so that’s a pro too like I mean if they like him then I like him for now until I see otherwise yeah and just for clarification Drake Powell is going to Brooklyn just for the fans just for if there was a Hawk fan that was watching this video powell fans out there okay new just went to Atlanta it’s time for cons because unfortunately there’s probably more at the moment and I think the first one of all of them is definitely like it is most definitely a reach even if there was one other team that you were scared of them him getting picked by that is still a reach um mock drafts as even though you can’t trust mock drafts because they’re never going to be perfect but especially these bigname ESPN the Jonathan Gavon u mockdrafts he’s that’s not just him giving his opinion that is him calling multiple executives per front office getting as much intel as he possibly can and I would be curious if we went back and looked at it and compared to how the draft’s going how many he’s getting right or how many he’s getting in the right area he was I think 35th on the ESPN big board i don’t know if that’s just a generic ESPN big board or if that is a arguably could be a first round pick I guess but I would he definitely 30 teams never mind yeah oh yeah he’s probably he’s he was projected to be a early to midsec round pick and that is a fact i don’t think mock drafts and big boards and all these insiders would be that off on somebody if multiple teams were expecting him to go here uh Brett Seagull said someone um uh texted him and was like “This is the wildest pick I’ve ever seen.” like and that is that’s a real thing that doesn’t make it a bad pick but it is absolutely a weird pick weird i got two things first just funny cuz Twitter’s funny um someone replied to the Chinese Jokic thing and said more like Teimu Yic yikes um secondly and this is just like a question for you I think as a fan or like as someone who’s watching a team go through like a rebuild for the like you know we probably became fans and like really when Dame took over is when we really started paying attention but like we have memories of like the the like baton late broy is probably the earliest memory I have like Jared Bailey’s era like we we went we went to yeah I don’t know why I remember like Nolan Smith like we remember those guys Jamal Crawford um at like if you’re the Blazers or you do you would you rather take a player who ceiling is the fourth option floor is the 10th option or do you want a guy who’s like top top four or bottom four no in between like are you okay with like cuz I feel like the blazers with sharp with clinging with Scoot hopefully I think Scoot um even with Ant like we haven’t had any like busts but no one’s like been a superstar and probably not projected to be so are you willing to like potent like get try to get one in this way where it’s like boom or bust or do you want to keep stocking like you know what I mean i would I I know what you mean um there’s multiple layers of that i would say of past of recent drafts I’d say Klingan and Scoot spec and like Chris Murray were picks of were just like picking the best the guy that’s expected to go there and it’s not like a risky pick or something i would say the sharp pick even though he was projected to go there like that was one where it wasn’t like oh we’re drafting on floor here um I would say the Ant pick was another risky pick because you’re drafting a guy straight out of high school so I would say there’s been picks of by the Blazers in recent memory uh where we do kind of go like it’s not necessarily boomer bust like this is true boomer bust but like it’s teetering on that i think to answer your question I since we don’t have a proven star on this team I like the idea of going boomer bust but here’s where there’s multiple layers you just drafted a center last year you have two more centers on your roster that you traded for in the Damen Lillard trade you brought in three centers that at one point during when you brought them in you said they’re a part of the team they’re we hope that they we can they can be on this team for the future and we want to build around them so it’s just like having centers and bigs is very important in the NBA but like I mean dude it’s so like you said it has to signal you’re moving on from Aiden time and if you don’t then it’s like what like you’re just you’re just turning this guard problem you have into a center problem and it’s like I agree with you and I I mean I just think there’s no way we start the season with five centers um like this is where you that like RJ Barrett to Portland for like something with even though Yeah they passed on Malawak man they took Murray Boils unless they love Purle but I thought he was in trade rumors until they were like “We don’t like Kevin Durant we like Yaka Purle.” Like what toronto is interesting but yeah I I just like I’m Yeah I No I’m shocked i’m shocked it’s It’s crazy we’ve we’ve made two moves this off seasonason and both of them leave you like scratching your head a little bit which like you know might not be the worst thing in the world because we’ve made plenty of trades in the past where we traded for Robert Cington traded for Norman Powell and our first instinct is like oh my gosh this is so awesome and those didn’t work out well when we traded for Denny we were like okay that’s that’s a solid move i I I I can’t be mad at it but I was a little like oh Denny um he has averaged 11 points on a bad Wizards team for four years he’s got a great contract but kind of odd move to trade your first round pick for Denny Odia and that turned out great so I mean the my only problem would be is like Cronin even though it’s Cronin hasn’t been drafting for long so it could be unfair to say you should have drafted someone good that’s like going to be a star by now but he hasn’t and maybe he has and he just the person he’s drafted hasn’t turned into the star but it’s just weird it’s just headscratching move it’s maybe we worked hard to continue to trade down and no one did and when we had to we were just like “Okay I guess we have to take him.” My question is if Malawatch didn’t get picked 10th and he was on the board for us at 11 were we like open to going with any center or was it solely we were going for this guy no matter what that’s an I That’s a question I would have loved to know the answer to that yeah like was there a guy that if he fell to 11 you wouldn’t trade out of the spot yeah because clearly you were you you were open to going with a center even if this was the only guy you were open for because you’re so open to him but was there were there people that got dra was this a backup plan i I want to know because the draft did get weird a little bit when Eigor went uh eight and CB went nine like was one of those guys on her i don’t know it’s weird i think if we took Kasparis at 16 I think it would have been from the outside perspective of like what experts expected teams to do like the Bladers would have read it perfectly like “Oh we we’ll trade back we think we know we know San Antonio and OKC aren’t going to take a guard like we could get our guy.” And then when you It’s just the hangup we’d be potting right now saying this was a master class by Joe if we did that just because that was the projected guy and no one expected Yakahonas to drop that low i think if we traded back one more time and took Yang in the mid20s we would be saying okay this is good we we got a lot of draft capital and we’ve clearly got our guy but 16 is like you can get really like 16 is weird on the flip side you trade back again and what if like Brooklyn takes him and then you’re like you’re you take now you’re I mean I guess with all the draft capital it’s like who gives you just take that’s available and see it’s also the reason why it’s shocking this I mean this is just the nature of taking these types of players at this slot is like it’s shocking because no one was reporting on it because the Blazers weren’t going to let it get out that they liked matter crazy is I I want to say that like that’s true but at the same time I don’t think anyone cared to report and on December 6 2023 NBA draft point tweeted “Y’all want to get deep into this prospect pool mike Schmidz exraft analyst and current Blazers head scout was in China recently to watch 18-year-old 71 foot center Han Hansen out of Quing Dao recently dropped 3116 four-4 against Shanghai look at those passes and then two years later he’s getting drafted um we got Yang if if you want to if you want to know who the Blades are taking in pre in future drafts just f follow Mike Schmidt around man i mean he did it with Klingan he did it with Scoot and he’s now like that’s so interesting bro dude dude we had and I get like value across picks is different we had three we had seven and we had 11 we came out with Scoot Cllingham and freaking Hansen hansen Yang then you go to the Spurs and they had like way higher picks so it’s not But like Victor Castle and Don Harper it’s just funny cuz like it’s way higher picks it’s not the same but like no one would be questioning this pick if it was if it was No if if we picked 29 or 31 it’s it’s well that’s no one would be questioning the pick from an outside perspective but Blazer perspective like the center center is weird it’s just weird to draft two centers in backto-back years and they’re for the most they’re different but in terms of like foot speed and size they’re the same like one is more offensive one is more defensive but they can’t play together no I mean it I mean well here’s here’s where it’s like I the here’s where here’s the vision which just requires execution on the general manager to actually move pieces which who knows if he does this but so Yang is 19 or turning 20 20 tomorrow i mean he’s 20 now klingan’s 20 he’s literally 20 because I guess he’s in New York right now i was going to say like it’s already June 26th in China right now so where’s how’s Klingan 2 probably he was there for two years he’s probably 20 or 21 right so you have two guys who are I’m 24 and I’m I’m considered young so like these guys are 20 years old and if you trade I mean the the you trade Eightton and Robert Williams or you trade Eightton and do like whoever your two centers that get traded are like yes they’re the same player but they’re both 20 so now you’re just doubling your odds that you’re getting a stud center for the future like think about how many like how many guys that are going to be drafted that got drafted tonight are going to be on this team that they got drafted to in five years probably not a lot uh yeah not a lot not as much as you would think not as much you would think like a lot of people get drafted every year and not a lot pan out and so I don’t mind like the position thing now again I’m only saying this if we trade some of our centers because then it doesn’t make any sense if we go into the season with five centers that obviously doesn’t make sense that’s that’s that’s stupid but what’s crazy what’s crazy is like is is Yang even could he even play minutes this year like I are we talking about a really raw prospect like to where we we actually do need two centers other than him on the roster like we can’t have him I don’t think we can have him be our backup and he can come and and play for a team that clearly is expecting to compete a little bit three centers on the roster i I I wouldn’t be shock I’d be shocked if like time lord isn’t traded but like I don’t think Aiden is necessarily just gone i I I don’t see a world where Yang plays really much at I I really think he’s a Rip City remix guy next year because he’s I you have to think he’s a raw prospect like it is interesting and like he he was playing profession I mean professionally but you know relative to the NBA it’s way different since he I mean he’s this is not like like you said two years ago we put up that stat line like he isn’t like bursting onto the scene out of nowhere um look I mean I think where I’m going to rationalize it is as a small market you get your stars through the draft and you this is like if you’re if you’re reaching at to this guy at 16 that means you see something you could be completely dead wrong but if you’re wrong you’re in the same spot and like I said like okay we take we take like Fleming and he’s like right now right okay you take you take coward or Fleming and they turn into like a nang like is that moving the needle for the Blazers at this point right like you know what I mean so I again like I don’t mind it it’s just I didn’t like he wasn’t on the board but guess what like I I would I I don’t want to speak out of my my butt but like I’m I’m curious what the like thought process was around like these players that have turned into stars and I’m not even going to name names cuz I’m not I’m going to name a name because I don’t know no I Yeah I was literally just going to say like where what was Giannis in the top 20 of the big board when he went 15th even as a raw prospect right i wonder if I can find that like please don’t please don’t i’m not comparing them at all i’m just saying this is an interesting way i’m trying to see if Giannis was anywhere on any KCP was fifth on the big board in 2013 well Hansen Yang is the highest rated international draft prospect according to BPM which whatever the hell that means yeah it’s uh one of those that I’m just just confused gosh yeah I don’t see Giannis in this guy’s big board at all so maybe he’s Giannis um but Chinese how different would the genuinely do you think you’d have a different reaction if we didn’t have Mike Schmidz or do you think the whole Mike Schmidtz thing and like everyone talking about how insane of a draft expert he is like I mean okay who who is our Well I guess Chris Murray is uh who is is Mike Schmidtz made a crazy unless he was a part of the idea to add Tummani Kamar to the Dame or to the Eightton trade like the Ryan Ryan repair it’s not like he shown anything but when we drafted him we were like Ryan Repair he could have gone 14 um true i’m I think I’m gonna I’m gonna say this because I think it’s part of the conversation is as like I said the Blazers needed to draft like at this point who cares about position and you need to like I what I appreciate about Mike Schmidz and Joe is they are building an identity they’re not just hodge podgeing talent like the Jazz or the Nets are like we have an identity and I think look the Blazers in the Dame and CJ era like they had an identity it was offense offense offense shot we want we want to be big and we want to play D yes and I I do think there’s a piece of this that’s like we haven’t seen many Chinese players succeed in this league it’s like Yao Ming it’s literally really So you see he’s like he’s from China and you immediately think like oh like like if he was French we’d I think we’d be excit more excited i think that’s fair to say i think I think that it’s it’s kind of mixed it’s like it’s such a since he is an Asian big man and you haven’t seen many Asian NBA players succeed like you said other than Yao Ming it’s such a shock that’s like you just expect him to not be that great but I do think if he was a college player and he was projected to go mid mid second round early second round and we drafted him and people knew him and they knew he was why he was projected there then I’d probably say people would be even more mad i think people are like so shocked but they’re also like because this is such a shocking pick it might be interesting you know and I think that’s where I’m at um I think it’s so out of left field so out of left field that you’re like it kind of it’s makes so little sense that it almost like there must be some sense a little excited yeah i don’t know i mean think of I mean Hassan Yang who’s uh who’s been picked as we’re recording this jace Richardson to the Magic so they continue to add shooting um let’s see nate Clifford to Sacramento ace Newell to Atlanta so he goes from high school in Georgia college in Georgia NBA Georgia the Knicks drafted Ben Sarif from Israel um and I know we have a lot of Israelian fans here because of Denny i see the numbers so it’s true shout out Denny um some guys still haven’t been drafted you know guys that the Blazers could try to trade back in for the second round tomorrow danny Wolf still hasn’t been drafted at this point you’re not drafting Danny Wolf you’re not getting another guy that’s that big uh Fleming still not drafted liam McNeely still not drafted um I’ll go specifically we’ll look at forwards specifically um I’m seeing two former Charlotte 49ers Bryce Williams and Igor Milichic or 13 and 14 on the forward big board um no one really crazy I’m seeing that I would want to get guard wise can you tell me the three players to be drafted from the CBA to the NBA yoing yaoing in 2002 yin Jing Lane or something ying Yang no this guy he’s the fourth there’s three before him is it another Chinese guy uh I don’t know i mean um he might he’s international I think but he’s black 2015 oh Moodier manuel Moodier yeah and Moody did not pan out so Oh no just Yao and yeah was like the golden child it’s so interesting um dude what I don’t I don’t even remember our reaction what was the reaction when we saw the pick like I I will be honest i heard the pick from You saw it on Twitter probably or something the stream that I was listening to I heard it and I thought I thought he got NBA sentel because I had never heard of the name i literally just like and then I had a smug look as I sat on the couch with you guys like they’re about to just be like the hell oh my gosh bro what a wild pick um but hey I’m going to be rooting for him and you know this this knight would be so much or this pick would be so much worse if we took him at 11 the fact that we still walked out of here with a pick like Yeah and B Yeah two to two seconds apparently since we gave it up in the Simons trade so people better be excited You got anything else or can we wrap um yeah uh I got nothing else i’m already prepared for the Twitter storm tomorrow or tonight or tomorrow morning uh begging the Blazers to trade into the second round to draft a certain guy the only guy I will be begging for is Ryan Nhard but that is just a personal thing not a team thing i guess summer league will be kind of fun now I I will be I genuinely will be so interested to see just what he looks like in summer league because he’s 72 man yeah it’s weird and if he can if he apparently can pass and move like that and again he probably looks that way because he’s playing in that league that’s my fear with overseas guys but you know the look the the league has been getting more international and I just I think overseas guys in general are a little more surefire than they have been in the past now ch Chinese players have some catching up to do to the like French and the Spanish and all that but my fear is uh this is just one of those
