76ers NBA Draft Grades: VJ Edgecombe Drafted With The 3rd Pick + 2nd Round Targets | NBA Draft

[Music] round one of the 2025 nba draft is in the books appreciate everybody who tuned into our live coverage right here on philadelphia 76ers now and we did an instant reaction video once the sixers took vj edgecomb with the third overall pick that video is up on the channel here on this show we’re going to give out our draft grade for round one with what daryl my nick nurse and the sixers did we’re also going to take a look ahead to round two at some of the top prospects available as the sixers will next be on the clock in the second round with the 35th overall selection and so the draft with the first three picks went chalk in my opinion we knew cooper flag was going to get selected by the dallas mavericks we knew that dylan harper was going to get taken by the san antonio spurs and as we got closer and closer to the draft there was a lot of buzz a lot of momentum behind the sixers taking vj edgecomb the guard out of baylor and a lot of that happened because ace bailey declined to work out with the 76ers he had some bad people around him in my opinion in the pre-draft process that rubbed a lot of teams wrong and what did danny a do he took him with the fifth overall pick the utah jazz were not a destination for ace bailey and now he’s going to go to utah which is going to be boring not a lot of people like to live in utah it’s not a great basketball destination if you like hiking and being out in the outdoors it’s one of the most beautiful states in america they do have a passionate fan base but as far as a basketball situation goes for ace bailey he gets to go to an organization that is on stable ground they extended their head coach danny ang is running the front office they took walter clayton tonight they have some decent building blocks on that roster so ace bailey might be bored out there but that’s what you get when you mess around in the pre-draft process and you tried to determine and force where you go when you don’t even work out for any teams the player empowerment era this is a negative component of that and so some of the teams being rubbed the wrong way by ace bailey that clearly included the 76ers because ace bailey has superstar potential i don’t know if vj edgecom has superstar potential daryl my said tonight he thinks that he can develop into an all-star and be an excellent two-way player as for the latter of that i think that vj edge can become an excellent two-way player and he brings a lot of intrigue and excitement to the city of brotherly love do the sixers have a bunch of guards on the roster yeah they do tyrese maxi jared mccain quinton grimes who was mentioned by name by daryl my restricted free agent but clearly the sixers want to bring him back and now philadelphia’s vj edgecomb as well arguably the best athlete in this draft super uber athletic and that athleticism it shows up as a finisher on defense him making highlight reel worthy plays he’s gotten some comps to a young victor oladipo a young dwayane wade i don’t necessarily see that but i do see a player who can be an elite defender at the next level because of his activity and athleticism and hopefully he can develop and grow into a better offensive player 15 points per game last year for baylor five and a half rebounds more than two steals 43 and a half% from the floor when he runs the floor it’s electrifying he plays with great energy he plays with a lot of swagger he plays with this tenacity and sixers fans are really going to enjoy the play style and the guy character it’s important regardless of how you slice it up and clearly the sixers too and passing up on ace bailey taking vj edgecomb value character tyrese maxi great character good work ethic he doesn’t develop into an all-star without that the sixers have drafted a lot of losers and a lot of duds who don’t have a love for basketball who don’t have quality character and so that is important for a sixers team by the way that has had a pretty dysfunctional culture for a majority of my lifetime and for those of you worried about the offensive game i’m with you there were some good trends toward the end of last year after struggling with his shot to start the season bj edgecomb did average 17.1 points per game he shot 46% from the field 36% from three over his final 17 games that’s a pretty good sample size and that’s a lot of volume there so you have that he looked very dynamic with team bahamas last summer playing alongside deandre aton and buddy heield and he was able to get up in buddy heal’s grill buddy heield is a solid offensive player at the nba level i think that vj edgecom also could really benefit from nba spacing so he’s going to sprint up and down the floor throw down hammer dunks he’s going to have post rising plays he’s going to have some dunks that’ll be on sports center top 10 and hopefully over time the work off the dribble creating for himself and others that comes with development you can develop a dribble drive hopefully the shot becomes a little bit more consistent what i do like is that the form is good it’s tight it’s clean it’s not a clunky ben simmons form where he’s literally shooting like this with the side rotation and his elbow popped out it’s a good form and he was the safer play for the sixers at number three i think that ace bailey has superstar potential as i mentioned he’s gotten some kevin durant comps it wouldn’t shock me if he ends up being the top player in this draft but it came with a lot of risk daryl mory nick nerz they know that they’re on the hot seat with what happened last year their jobs are not certain to be in place for the 2026 2027 season and vj edgecomb is going to help them as a team in that rotation right away at the very least on the defensive side of the floor kind of reminds me of amit styel and andre aguidala and hopefully on the offensive end of the floor he can become a lot more than that so myself and chip we put together a grade for the edgecom selection we’re going to rock with the b and chip i think that’s a good grade i’m not going to go as far as a c because i like the selection and i like the player i don’t love it but i like it and you can see where the sixers are coming from with the potential with the pick here yeah that’s why i think b makes a lot of sense we both kind of looked at each other we were like b grade makes sense yeah because it’s not a home run it’s not a slam dunk it’s not a steal of a pick at number three so and it’s not like you’re getting a cooper flag level player so it’s not an a dylan harper yeah exactly dylan harper at three that would have been an a right vj edgecom not a reach i don’t think and not a pick you’re looking at right now saying “oh man that is just not a good pick they’re going to regret this for sure for years to come so it’s not a c necessarily for me b makes sense it was the safe pick right i would have gone ace bailey i would have taken the risk because for me if you’re the sixers you’re not going to be picking in the top three again for the foreseeable future right one you don’t think you’ll be that bad again hopefully but also your picks are owed to okc so if you’re going to be in this position where it’s a very unique position to have a talented team with talented players at the top of the draft i would have taken a swing for the fences and i would have gone to take ace bailey darl my said earlier that and again is it how true is this i don’t know he said the pregrif workout stuff didn’t impact them not taking ace bailey is he telling the truth is he lying i’m not sure but if that’s the case do they really look at this and say they think vj is the better player than ace look i like vj a lot that’s why you know i’m still agreeing with giving the pick a b here he can hang his hat on defense and he’ll be athletic he can play in transition but the offense does have to come along at the nba level and that’s where it does concern me a little bit it’s not like he’s guaranteed to be good offensively right away so we’ll have to come in we’ll have to make a good impression but you know by all accounts in the meetings and in the pregab process he impresses sixers so get him in the building and uh hopefully that offense does come along and we’re talking about a player in a couple years here who is a very good starting guard maybe on his way to making some all-star games like daryl mory hope so i think a b solid earned grade here for vjho and this is a player who’s gotten it out of the mud like he’s from the bahamas his family lived off a generator for a long time he’s had to face a lot of adversity in his life he’s tough he’s rugged i do worry a little bit about him being nervous for that workout not sure if that was true confirmed or not you heard what chip said about what daryl my relay it does kind of make me sick that danny a a great basketball executive who fleeced the sixers and that markel folultz jason tatum trade took ace bailey with the fifth overall pick that does worry me a little bit but i think that vj edgecom can become a very good player so grade the pick for us abcdf share your to kyle lowry if he comes back give up the number seven you old dusty veteran to the rookie and let edgecom wear his baylor jersey number seven plus it’ll look pretty clean as for the top players available sixers will be on the clock and have their second round pick at 35 overall that is the only round two pick that they do have obviously that could change because once round two comes around so many teams just decide to wheel and deal trade picks you have rashir fleming wing out of st joe’s right uh bill simmons was saying that he really wanted him to go to the boston celtics aduro wing out of arkansas noah penda wing france tyrese proctor the guard out of duke cam jones guard out of marquette ryan calbrrener big out of kraton maximald big out of stanford sion james wing from duke those are our best players available according to our draft expert nick roloff who’s been crushing it here at chat sports chip you look at that list and you were looking at some of the top players available and you said “man some really good players available.” day two round two who do you like for philly there at 35 overall yep so again draft will pick up at 31 so sixers five picks into that second round and you know i showed you that top group of eight there so there’s really three names in that group that i’m like “wow those would all be great picks for the sixers.” rashier fleming is the first one i think it i’d be surprised if he doesn’t go off the board before 35 to philadelphia he’s a guy i thought was a lock to go in round one he’s someone who a bit of a late bloomer but you know we saw a lot of guys in this first round we keep saying this word three and d right every nba team’s looking for guys who can shoot the three and play good defense and rasheed fleming can do that he’s got great size at 68 69 he’s a great three-point shooter right around 40% on the season and he can play defense and again he he kind of doesn’t know how good he is yet right he’s still kind of coming along being that late bloomer so if he is there no question that should be the pick if he’s gone which i expect him to be both of those centers ryan calbrunner maxim reno i would love either of them a little bit different calburners more traditional you know back to the basket big not super athletic but has won defensive player of the year at kraton i believe three times and he’s going to be a good defender when he comes in the nba not much of a floor spacer not a super great athlete but should find success in the nba and then maxim reno a little bit more skilled offensively can take you off the dribble a little bit not quite the same vertical defender that uh that cal brener is but a little bit more skilled offensively he can space the floor he can shoot it either of those guys i’d be totally fine with along with rashier fleming so some talented options still on the board uh should be exciting the sixers can get an impact player in the second round here at number 35 so still a very very important pick here for philadelphia not just oh second round pick whatever this pick’s going to matter a lot hopefully they can nail it yeah chip has been pounding the table for the sixers to take a big with this second round pick daryl my saying tonight they expect joel embiid to be ready right around training camp look we’ve been doing this for a decade we don’t know when joel embiid is going to come back yes the sixers did draft ambona last year and i thought that whether he was playing for the delaware blue coats or with the sixers he displayed some potential but you could go with another big i agree with chip there just to get some more depth there and you’re just not sure how joel embiid is going to fare how he’s going to look how he’s going to be able to hold up after
