Joan Beringer selected No. 17 overall by Timberwolves | 2025 NBA Draft Grades & Instant Reaction
back here on CBS Sports HQ on the clock presented by Jeep there’s only one oh how about this we’ve got some video yoan Baringer yes I know French barren big baller uh he led the Adriatic League in blocks per game last season uh I’m I’m kind of excited about this adam Finkelstein um are you excited about this yan Barren heading to the Minnesota Timberwolves so you got Rudy Gobear and Baris yeah I I am excited about it he’s 6’11 without shoes on so for all intents and purposes he is a 7-footer he’s got a better than 7’4 wingspan and as you just saw in those highlights he is an extreme athlete now Rudy Gobear is not getting any younger but he’s been arguably a generational type defensive talent and now Barry Jay gets to learn under him and then presumably have the opportunity to take over a few years down the road but I think this is a great succession plan if you will for the Timberwolves at the center spot as is the case with a lot of young players it’s an upside play he’s only been playing basketball for about three or four years so needless to say he’s very raw relative to a more well-rounded prospect but um the athleticism is there he projects as somebody who could be a versatile defender down the road but you saw the video he’s thin he’s going to have to add weight get stronger and develop some skills because maybe once upon a time being 7 foot and athletic could get you by in the NBA but it’s harder now than it’s ever been avery what do you think here about this selection from the Minnesota Timberwolves Yawan Baron yeah I like this pick when you look at the NBA right now especially it’s a threes league and a layup league uh on average it’s not really a mid-range league even though Shay Gilders Alexander loved the mid-range so with all the analytics and advanced analytics and stats you need shot blockers and rim protectors uh to be able to protect your team against your opponents in terms of points in the paint beer this is what he does he can protect the rim he’s a shot blocker uh if you talk about a succession plan you know Rudy Gobear who knows how long he has he’s had a a great run with all of his defensive players of the year and maybe this kid could develop into a little bit more of a refined offensive player down the road so that you don’t have to sub him out especially uh in terms of your offense defense substitutions so again this is a kid that um Tim Wolves are going to develop uh and I think give him two or three years he could potentially be a solid NBA player all right Avery Johnson there in Dallas where it was Flag Day continues to be Flag Day as we take a look at the last five selections Adam Thinkkelestein uh certainly the surprise there uh Yang Hansen from China the sevenfooter um but your overall thoughts here on these last five selections in the draft where these guys have landed well you can see that size is at a premium and uh they’re they’re trying to find big bodies in the lane what’s interesting about this draft is that there’s been different kinds of big guys so you’ve got Barry and and Malawatch guys who are the rim running shot blockers you’ve got guys who are like Queen who are highly skilled danny Wolf a name we haven’t called is another big name like that big man like that and then you’ve got uh Hansen who’s I I think a a skilled type of big and people are saying you know I’m getting texts right now and saying well if he hits he’s going to be a Gasol brother who knows if he’s going to hit but that’s the you know is he a Jokicage type is he a Gasol type only time will tell but it’s different kinds of big men and you can see size still matters in this league yeah to me the pick that stands out there is Carter Bryant going to San Antonio like I mentioned you know they’ve got the star pieces theoretically in place whether that’s Dylan Harper Stefon Castle De’aran Fox Victor Wimyama now you just want to find perfect role players to surround them with and Carter Bryant has a chance to be one of the best role players in the NBA in time are we surprised here that uh Yakonis is still on the board i mean I thought I am I wrong i thought he was at least a top 15 pick i I think most people thought he was a top 10 pick and I will tell you this I had heard even at the beginning of the week that Brooklyn was hoping to come away with him and a big man now no one thought that Demond was going to be in play here but we’re starting to come on the place like maybe Brooklyn can get him the other way around and going into this night if you said they were going to take Yakonis first and then Jaor you said “Yeah that’s a good outcome for it to be flipped.” No one would have anticipated that yeah we’ll see what ends up with that selection at 19 the Brooklyn Nets coming up but the
Adam Finkelstein, Gary Parrish and Avery Johnson join CBS Sports HQ to grade Joan Beringer being selected No. 17 overall to the Timberwolves.

I tried to recreate a scene from a steamy romance novel for my boyfriend. He walked in just as I slipped on the satin sheets and face-planted onto the bed. Who says reality can't be as dramatic as fiction🔥
Twolves nation be like: who?
🌲🐺
i'm so happy. Go Wolves!
Really wanted Walter Clayton Jr here. Hope this kid is special cause I believe we just passed on a future all star point guard
Wolves just drafted Rudy's eventual replacement.
best pick wolves did great
No…. Yall draft a kid that started playing at 15…. Ant needs to leave MN ✌🏾
These comments are so clueless we needed a win now player like Walt or Wolf
A project who probably won't be NBA ready for years is an "A" grade? lmao By the time he's ready to meaningfully contribute to the team Ant will have forced his way to the Lakers or etc.
This pick is whack. Ive been a wolves fan since 1998 son. Hes too young for anyone to say hes going to be good. There were 5 guys on the board better
T-wolves have more centers than any other position- None considered good scorers. Thin at the 1 and 3. No consistent 3rd scorer. Edwards CAN take over games. Randle can too from time to time. The team is light on guys who can approach 20 a game consistently.
so it's pronounce yo-an berry-jay
Rudy for sure a generational defensive talent. Ain’t no argument about it. Four time DPOY
Not going help them anytime soon if at all need to trade the pick to get a ready player really not done anything to get better in the off-season. The thunder is still a lot better than the timberwolves.
Terrible decision, the wolves just lost in conference finals cause they had no one that could dribble the ball, period!!! How the hell is a development piece who "might" be good help them? If they dont have some plan to get an actual starting quality point guard they wont even make the conference finals. Conley is done and Dillingham was a bigger mistake than this pick. Funny how the worst channel for draft analysis thi8nks this is such a good idea.
The French Freak. Minnesota got there own Antetokounmpo
I dont think the fanbase realizes that this team is not good enough to win a championship right now, its so much smarter to set up success in 2-3 years when our core players are reaching their physical peak (Ant, Jaden, Naz) by that time Rob will have gotten minutes and figure out his game more and this pick should have years to learn under Rudy and play his role perfectly. What happens if we mortgage our future and dont win a chip? It's not the play. I understand the excitement since the last two years were the closest we've ever came to winning it all. It's just not in the cards rn so its smarter to build the team up gradually.
