Boston Celtics Draft Grades From 2025 NBA Draft Ft. Hugo Gonzalez, Amari Williams & Max Shulga

[Music] what’s going on green teamers You’re watching Celtics Today by chat sports I am your host Tyler Smith and on today’s show we are going to break down all three Boston Celtics draft selections give each pick a grade and then grade the Boston Celtics 2025 NBA draft as a whole They made three selections one in the first round two in the second We know we did went over some pick cuts Hugo Gonzalez to the Boston Celtics Amari Williams to the Boston Celtics but also Max Schulga of the VCU Rams was picked by Boston at pick 57 We’ll break it all down in just a moment But make sure you are Hugo Gonzalez a wing out of Madrid And a lot of Celtics fans upon the selection made here were not exactly giddy about this pick heading in but I really do believe that Hugo Gonzalez is one of the more slept on players in the 2025 NBA draft Yet Jonathan Gavone way back when when he did a way too early mock draft in January 2024 had him mocked as a top five pick in the draft He comes in at 66 solid size decent enough athlete as well can get above the rim and sky above defenders for offensive rebounds 19 years old and you know I I think he’s going to be a solid connecting piece for the Boston Celtics He’s not going to wow you with his outside shot or scoring ability just yet but he does all the little things that make you you a lot of money in the NBA Look at what Derrick White has done Obviously he’s a 40% three-point shooter but the little things are what you know makes him as valuable of a piece as he is for this team And I think Hugo fits that bill as well He’s a standout defender who plays with intensity and intellect A very high IQ basketball player He’s been with Real Madrid since he was 9 years old So he’s been in a professional environment for a long long time He can finish around the rim coming off of cuts screens or drives He’s a really good back cutter like always has available hands and is a sure-handed player as well Can finish around the rim through contact not much of a shot creator or a maker but I don’t think the Selters need to be picking any of those types of guys at this point They have a Jason Tatum They have Jaylen Brown They have Payton Pritchard Even trading for Anthony Simons is an elite shot creator So this is a good player here that fits the Boston Celtics mold Look he’s not going to wow you with the numbers that you see on screen but the international stats for a 19-year-old who’s playing behind multiple M former NBA players they’re not going to tell the whole story Like he didn’t play enough uh in his time at Real Madrid this past year So as far as the the in between the ears things and the overall intangibles that Hugo can bring to this game diving on the floor crashing the offensive glass getting deflections blocking shots and you know just being a connector on offense a great thing that he does is when the the the floor gets clogged up on one side he has the awareness spatially to find another spot on the court for it to to move his body to which opens up the rest of the floor for the rest of his teammates Really high basketball IQ player and I think could really surprise a lot of people down the line with the Boston Celtics So Hugo Gonzalez at pick 28 for Boston Kevin Oconor had this little write up about him Gonzale Gonzalez is a high motor wing with great defensive tools and a slashing style on offense If his jumper and handle develop he could be a versatile two-way starter but he barely even played off of the bench overseas I don’t expect him to jump into this Boston Celtics lineup immediately this this next season But down the line as he develops I think he’s going to be a really really solid NBA player on a lot of winning teams I think that that’s going to be his you know role Just gamer winner Make the little plays in between and uh that’s going to make him a lot of money in this league What do you guys think Grade the pick of Hugo Gonzalez A B C D or F down in the comment What’s the grade of Hugo Gonzalez Let me know what you guys think down in the comments section All right I’m going to give it a B minus here for Hugo Originally I was more on the fence of like a C C minus maybe uh type of selection here but the more I kind of think about the player that he is um and and the archetype that he you know has on the out there on the floor the more I like this pick for the Celtics and the more I think that he can be a contributor down the line They need a player off of the bench who’s going to make those winning plays night in and night out And I like this selection a lot Um hopefully he can contribute sooner rather than later Uh he’s going to be coming over this season for the Boston Celtics Not a draft and stash player like previously reported He will be with the seas in 2526 but not yet confirmed if he’ll get be on the se summer league team in the middle of July Next up for the Boston Celtics in round two pick 46 after a big trade with the um who ended up getting the Celtics pick here The Phoenix Suns Phoenix Suns Phoenix Suns Phoenix Suns traded up or they say they trade up to pick 31 Regardless it was the Magic It was the Magic the Celtics trade with regardless they take Amari Williams here the big man out of Kentucky And I think this is a really really good fit for the Boston Celtics His calling cards as a 7 foot one player potentially with 265 lbs of frame He is a shot blocker down low He has an elite wingspan at 7 foot five So a plus a really big plus wingspan there elite rim protector but an also a dominant rebounder as well Last season at Kentucky in the SEC after playing his previous four years at Drexel he had a 29.7 defensive rebound percentage That means three out of every 10 shots that came off the rim he was grabbing the board And then on the flip side offensive rebound percentage He had a 10.3 in the SEC last season And that means every every 10 shots that get shot up by you know the Kentucky Amari Williams is coming down with an offensive rebound if that shot missed So this guy is a glass cleaner He can defend the rim But an underrated part of his game is his ability to pass the basketball out of the short roll the high post One of the more underrated passing bigs in this draft And Mike Xarin Celtics assistant GM was very uh vocal about that in the post-draft press conference talking about Amari Williams as somebody who could fill that role potentially as a Luke Cornet kind of you know type player uh who can pass the ball out of the short roll hit the open man of the corner and potentially even be somebody who could run in the open floor for Boston Roley scouting reports says that he uses physical tools to his advantage as an elite rebounder and blocker A solid passer for his physical profile He’s unlikely to offer much as a scorer even on the interior Like he’s not going to be much of a postup guy Uh really just a lob threat and kind of just cleanup guy Offensive rebound put backs like though that’s going to be where he kind of makes his money in the scoring department not going to be a creator but honestly can move really well in the open floor And I think that’s going to work well for a Boston Celtics team that probably wants to run and gun And we know the Celtics like to um have bigs that have high IQs and have the ability to pass the basketball And I want to temper expectations a little bit Like obviously pick 46 overall isn’t going to be the end all beall the solution to the Celtics problems in the front court Obviously Al Horford Luke Cornet still impending free agents here I know the Celtics want to prioritize at least bringing one of those guys back but Amari Williams is a really good fit for Boston This tweet I’m reading right now comes from Jared Weiss He says “Considering how well they develop bigs with good passing feel he can push in transition and may be good in the open floor as a seven-footer What I like about him is his ability to fill the Luke Cornet role running delay handoff actions and passing in the short role There’s a bit of Hartinstein to his game if he can develop be a solid screener and he turns 24 in January So there’s a chance he could factor into Boston’s center rotation this season I’m pumped up This is a cool pick and I think it fits a lot of what Boston needs here Jason Tatum probably gonna be out for all of next season They’re going to need somebody to clean the glass as JT was easily the best rebounder on this roster Grade the pick of Amari Williams for me A B C D or F Pick 46 overall And as far as what the Celtics needed I I thought this was a really really solid pick You let me know what you think Grade the pick of Amari Williams ABC B C D or F I’m giving this one an A minus man And that’s tough to do in the second round And look there are some aspects of Amari Williams game that are not the most glamorous Like he’s not a good scorer He’s not going to be a floor spacer by any means but he’s going to make the right plays when he’s asked to He is a high IQ and very sound passer spent the five years in college So he’s going to be a guy who I I think could contribute fairly right away but probably expect him to compete with Neas Kada for the backup center role uh given whoever uh ends up getting resigned or brought in by the Boston Celtics in free agency here to be the starting center to start draft pick 57 They end up taking Max Schulga the big guard wing 3 and D prototype out of VCU I was fired up about this pick man I did not expect Max Schulga to come off of the board in the first 60 selections of this draft And I am so excited that Brad Stevens believes in his in this vision He was a 15 five and five guy over at VCU last year really good passer dominated the ball for them in a lot of scenarios and shot a blistering 38.7% on pretty solid volume for the Rams as well I watched a lot of Max Schulga this past year and he could provide a lot of things for you on both ends of the floor A really good defender and a really good knockdown shooter Not the reason that he maybe falls this far down into the draft he is an older player and he’s not the most explosive athlete on the floor Roloff had him ranked as the 23rd overall guard with the 69th overall player here and he’s a sleeper 3 and D prospect with consistent shooting production Also he is poised with great rebounding numbers for a guard and his issues creating you know shots off the dribble H I don’t think we necessarily need that I think we need somebody who’s going to be a sound rebounder can be a connector and can handle the rock a little bit and be a decision maker and be a good off-the-catch shooter The pull-up jumper is a little bit um there’s a lot left to be desired in his pull-up shot but I I like Schulga a lot as somebody who can kind of plug and play in any scenario He could play the one he could play the two he could play the three uh at 6’5 and yeah he doesn’t have the most plus wingspan out there Uh only at 65 and 3/4 but he is a stick uh as far as being um an onball defender here So yeah he’s not going to wow you athletically but was that 33 or 53 from long range It’s not terrible Could be could be a little bit better uh from those NBA combine numbers but we watched this guy in college I watched him uh probably at least five six seven games uh this past season so I I’m a believer in Max Schulga Again though it it’s the 57th overall pick so I’m not going to put too much stock into him being an immediate contributor for Boston But if he was and that would be a great problem to have if he was NBA ready and uh the Celtics had confidence in his ability to get out there on the floor pretty much day one he will be on the summer league team So I’m very very pumped up to watch the Celtics summer league squad uh come the middle of July And Scholga is probably going to be a big focal point on that roster 6’4 Um but he plays bigger than that and he plays with a lot of IQ He is from Ukraine originally He’s 22 years old Then look man the Cells took a couple of players in the second round that project to be instant contributors and guys who can provide a role in this league without a lot of development I like Amari Williams I like Max Scholga a lot What do you guys think Great This pick 57 overall Max Scholga A B C D or F You let me know what you think in the comments section about the Celtics final pick of 2025 I’m giving this one a B+ And I got a little bit of bias in my pick I can’t I can’t lie I watched this guy a ton in college I think this is a really sound player overall two-way ability and he doesn’t really lack on either one of those ends like you know the the no ceilings NBA draft guy was talking about you know what’s the selling point in Max Schulga when well when a lot of people come into this league that as three and D prospects they usually lean more one way or the other and kind of you know let let the other side of the floor take a backseat does not do that he’s going to give you 110% effort every single time out there on the basketball court on both ends he’s going to put fear in into the eyes of defenders is his ability to get downhill hill or pull you know have that outside jumper He also is a threat to pass the ball as well to open open players He’s got solid vision and on the defensive end he can guard some of the best players at his position as well So I like this pick a lot B+ 57 overall maybe not be a contributor right away but who knows if he ends up developing I would love to see him in Celtic Green in the regular season and beyond With the Celtic selections in 2025 they go as follows Hugo Gonzalez round one pick 28 overall out of Real Madrid Little bit of a project player but he’s already got the stuff in between the ears to be a productive NBA talent Amari Williams the shot blocking rebound and solid passing big out of Kentucky 7 foot one He’s got some girth to him too I like that pick for Boston And then Max Schulga my Atlantic 10 boy there at 57 overall out of VCU So with that being said the 2025 NBA draft is in the books officially Grade the Celtics 2025 NBA draft class for me Mario Williams Hugo Gonzalez and Max Schulga A B C D or F What do you guys think the Celtics did in this draft Did Brad Stevens cook Did he not Let me know in the comments what you guys think Overall I’m giving the Celtics draft a B+ And maybe I should have given it a B You know holding a little bit more weight to the Hugo Gonzalez pick there in the first round but the more I I I see that pick the more I can kind of talk myself into it And uh you know the Celtics had a little bit of an identity with this draft in my opinion They took guys who make winning plays and they took guys with you know real fits on their roster Amari Williams good passing big and they fill a need there on the offensive and defensive glass Max Schulga do it all knockdown shooter and can provide a lot of different uh you know skill sets to his game So kind of a 52 player there 57th overall though is he going to contribute that much And then Hugo Gonzalez makes the winning plays in between diving on the floor offensive boards deflections all that good stuff that you need to get in the win column in these in the in the NBA So I like this draft a lot for Boston as it all fleshed out Brad you’ve done a great
