Is It a FAILURE if the New-Look Spurs Miss the Playoffs?

spurs don’t have any pressure to win i will give you I disagree with that a little bit h I disagree with that they don’t have pressure to win right now well listen if we’re talking about a championship you’re right they don’t have a pressure to win a championship they have a pressure to make the playoffs they have a pressure to make a massive leap this year victor Webbyama is getting that thirdyear itch right like that that that’s a real thing that’s coming about this dude is focused on winning and I think people within the organization this is not a report this is a thought i think people within the organization are starting to recognize that we’ve got to do things to lay the foundation that we’re doing everything to not kick the can down the road that we want to that we are serious about winning yes we can bring in young players yes we could develop but at the same time we got to focus on the bigger picture and the Spurs better make the playoffs this year and I would think that they would even want to be a team that’s that’s that’s outside of that playin realm right they want to be a top six team okay look and I don’t know if that’s realistic but but they Victor Wyama wants that of course everybody wants that Jar now here’s the thing here’s the thing we got to be careful about remember everybody was looking at Oklahoma City a short three years ago and saying “What’s happening there you guys have two losing seasons in a row you’re are you going through the process and then all it took was one year to get into the playin one year in the second round and then you’re in the NBA finals they had two losing seasons there in the post massive difference massive difference shay Guiltrus Alexander today was not Shay Gilus Alexander back in those backto-back years when they won 46 total games okay victor Wanyama is today what we think he’s going to be there’s a difference right victor Wyama has the chance to to run away for the next 10 years with defensive player of the year and compete each one of those years for MVP right you’ve got to make sure you’re committed and doing everything possible to surrounding him with the best possible cast of characters that he can lead to the playoffs year in and year out we can talk about championships later right this doesn’t have to be a black and white league that everybody tries to make it out to be where it’s either championship or top pick in the draft there is a middle ground and the Spurs have to be there they’ve got to get themselves out of this lottery conversation to appease Victor Wemyama now Jared I’m going to ask you two questions are you ready and I’m not going to treat you like a hostile witness but I’m going to ask you two questions because during our last podcast you treated me and my audience like hostile witnesses so I’m going to start here was there any water boarding cuz I don’t remember this no no no water boarding okay how many games did Big Vic play last year like 40 something 46 games right so he’s got to make sure now that was you know blood clot weird stuff i’m not saying he was on He was on pace to play over 70 games right right right right right but you’re saying there’s the urgency there we got to make sure that he can stay on the floor like you have to make sure that everything’s being done so that he’s available i’m not even saying that’s on him i’m saying that’s organizationally i think they were doing they were they were going to be fine secondarily didn’t they make a big trade last year yeah of course they they traded for De’Arren Fox last year so it’s not like they were kicking the can down the road they saw an opportunity they saw a disgruntled De’Arren Fox we had a trade request and they made a move to go get him now we didn’t get a chance to see it all coming to fruition because of the injury but they’ve been trying you got the rookie of the year Steph Castle they had Chris Paul last year what are they going to do with Kell Johnson and Devin Viselle and Jeremy Sohan yes those are questions but those aren’t nobodies i think they came into the number two pick they weren’t out here stumbling they’re not the Charlotte Hornets i think just because they got the second pick by virtue of a lottery not by virtue of having the second worst record in the league gives Lacrosse the wrong impression am I right 100% i’m not I’m not trying to be a uh revisionist of history here what I’m trying to do is look forward with this and simply say that Victor Webbyama is good enough to be the best player on a playoff team year in and year out and he’s going to grow tired of not being in the postseason if this team continues to fail and all I questioned simply was should they have entertained the idea should they have taken a more serious look at acquiring a veteran somebody who could come in and guarantee them that they can contribute to a playoff push this year and next year as opposed to Dylan Harper who may have a higher ceiling who than said veteran but it may be three or four years between before you see the fruits of that labor i’m not necessarily saying I’m against you i will say this in the 20 in the uh 46 games he played last year the Spurs were 21 and 25 now that’s nothing to write home about that’s not Western Conference playing territory but they they were competitive with Victor Winyama and you look at the years of maturity that you’re going to do in natural roster construction that’s going to change i don’t think that in today’s second apron NBA and you are the small market San Antonio Spurs that you trade a costcontrolled number two pick for a proven veteran if you want to get a proven veteran you can go trade the Sohands the Kell Johnson’s one of those guys and maybe package him with something that you got you don’t give up the number two pick that is far too valuable and I give you another reason why another piece of evidence excuse me the Brooklyn Nets who had five first round draft picks Yeah were looking to get to the number two draft pick from everything that I was told leading up into it but the Spurs wouldn’t budge now are you telling me that you would rather have Dylan you wouldn’t have Dylan Harper but you would take you would go down and say “I’ll take eight and 22 or something like that.” No no no no i wouldn’t have done that i I would good i I you know and I know we’re gonna talk Boston later but like the level of deal I’m talking about here is you know some sort of package of of the number two pick and those and those young guys you know that you’re talking about for Jaylen Brown yeah like and I’m not saying Boston would do that i I’m saying that’s the level of of deal that I’d be thinking of right got you yeah i’m not I’m not taking I’m not taking the the things that helped the Nets become one of the worst teams in basketball back for me you know i’m not talking I’m talking about a guy that you know you could plug into that starting lineup today at the three spot at the four spot depending four or five depending where you want to play Vic and and help you get to be at the very least a mid-tier western like would you agree with this statement it is a failure if the Spurs don’t make the playoffs this year failure in the Western Conference this is a disappointment it would be a disappointment i think you can have the expectation we’re talking about the dude who’s going to walk into this season as the odds on favorite to win most to win defensive player of the year and be I would I would imagine I’m not a gambling expert but I would imagine he’s going to be in the top five mix for MVP like preseason as he should yes right you’ve got that guy that’s gonna be in contention for two of the biggest awards in the NBA heading into the season and you don’t think it’s a failure if they miss the playoffs now you just said you don’t want this to be this very binary black and white thing and yet when I said it would be a disappointment you Well that’s semantics you’re making it semantics now no no cuz you’re you’re a wordssmith you know you you think you’re a fancy writer that puts together all these big- time words and you know colloquials and all these things that that make us people feel like we’re dumber because you’re smart i’m not a smart man but I know this that if the Spurs don’t make the playoffs in Victor Wemanyama’s third year it will be a disappointment a failure whatever word you want to use

Victor Wembanyama is entering Year 3 — and the pressure is rising in San Antonio. Vincent Goodwill and Jared Greenberg debate whether the Spurs should have pushed harder to win now, if drafting Dylan Harper was the right move at No. 2, and what it means if Wemby still can’t reach the postseason.

📈 Should the Spurs have flipped the No. 2 pick for a veteran?
🏀 Is it playoffs or bust in Year 3 for Wemby?

  1. Wemby is not already the player we think he’s going to become how do these dudes get jobs to just yap and say anything lol I need his job id give better takes lol

  2. This is a silly opinion. Yeah Wemby is going to look around the league and choose to leave the Spurs when they have Harper/Castle/Fox/Bryant/Sochan? Forget about the other guys, few teams and compete with that level of raw talent in the league. Wemby is not anywhere close to thinking about leaving the Spurs. Is there a desire to get to the playoff? Sure, but you earn that with you play next year getting 45-47 wins in the West. That doesn't come from just trading and picking up salaries. You have to think long term and no player is wiser at his age than Wemby so he gets that completely

  3. Dude obviously really wanted Boston to get Harper and is upset they didn't take the awful Jalen Brown deal. He wanted to come here and cheer for the Celtics for getting Harper and now he cant

  4. As a Spurs fan for almost 30 years now, barring injuries, yes it is playoff time. Spurs will probably never get in the lottery again with Vic so now is the time to stop fiddling around and make a serious push. I believe Harper and Bryant will help get us there, we just need a solid defensive big man to allow Wemby to do what he does at the 4. Trade Devin and Keldon if necessary along with some of the 7.34 billion future picks we seem to have.

  5. Media = you have Wemby so you better take a shortcut. You think the Spurs are going to listen to the media on how they should get back to playoff contention after they had 22 years straight appearances in the playoffs and 5 championships. They know how to get there and how to sustain better than anyone else.

  6. Jared sounds like a guy that has been listening to too much Kendrick Perkins and not enough to his Spurs sources (if he has any) 🤷🏽‍♂️

  7. Would've won 40+ had Vic and Fox not missed the last third of the season. Zero reason to not be in the 4-6 range this year.

  8. Wemby affect is real, however, what helps is Wemby's humility and patience. Plus …his health scare. Wemby feels that he let the Spurs down….because of the health scare in my opinion created an extension to the timeline for Wemby. I believe if no improvement in the team after year 2026, then it gets real. By the way that will be the year of his second contract "the Max"

  9. All these people who feel we shouldn't have drafted Harper because we are guard heavy, I need the same energy when Harper ends up being a All NBA first team guard.

  10. Not play in is a failure in 2026. Playoff 1 or 2 win series is a success this year.

We are not better than OKC even with a Giannis or KD anyway. Sure we would have been playoff team but at what Price fir the future

  11. The Spurs will be better than the Nuggets next year. Calling it. They were in the playoff run last year 40 games in with a 40 year old CP3 at PG. With Fox and the depth now added, they'll be a top 6 team.

  12. If the Spurs were to miss the playoffs It would be an absolute failure. The Spurs have been in last place since Duncan retired.

  13. Brown can’t use his left hand, can’t dribble, is a below league average shooter, who can’t play off the ball defense, & would cost the team it’s depth due to both the cost of acquiring him + the $60+ mil it’d put on the books during his age 32 season. That’s the guy that’s going to get Wemby to stay in SA & in return the Spurs only have to give up the far superior skill set in Harper? This isn’t the East. You better bring the Justice League. Not just Robin. & just because Harper won’t be the best version of himself as a rookie, doesn’t mean he can’t be a major boost to get them to the playoffs. Manu won a Championship his rookie year, while Parker was in year 2. Both players got much better, but they were still crucial to winning in 2003.
