Philadelphia 76ers NBA Draft Grades: VJ Edgecombe & Johni Broome | 2025 NBA Draft
[Music] welcome into Philadelphia 76ers now Chase Senior here with you Producer Chip here as well The 2025 NBA draft is over so you know what time it is Time to hand out our 76ers draft grades Daryl my Sixers making two picks in this year’s draft VJ Edgecomb the guard out of Baylor taken by Philadelphia with the third overall pick And then Janai Broom selected by the 76ers with the 35th pick in the second round Let’s begin of course with VJ Edgecom There was a debate for weeks in the leadup to the draft Should the Sixers take a chance on Ace Bailey obviously a lot of risks there So many red flags with how him and his camp handled the pre-draft process He has tremendous upside You can end up being a star player but that boomer bus potential very risky I don’t really like how he handled the postdraft process him going to Utah There was chatter today about him potentially holding out with the Jazz Now it does worry me that Danny An took him because Danny An is a great basketball mind That was the case with Boston It’s been the case with him trying to rebuild Utah But clearly the Sixers didn’t like the player all that much and they’re going to say that they weren’t rubbed the wrong way by Ace Bailey him cancelling the workout and all of the shenanigans They probably were Also keep in mind that Daryl my Nick Nurse know that their seat is hot going into 2025 2026 because of how disappointing they were last year The Paul George deal blew up in their face The Joel Embiid extension awful Daryl Moy didn’t need to do it Andre Drummond did not work out And while they hit on Jared McCain Adam Bona has potential they are locked into some max contract extensions with PG with Embiid that don’t look promising And then they went out there last year and they won less than 30 games And so they take VJ Edgecom who they like better they rave about his character everybody does and he can help them more so right away What type of player is he going to be on the high upside train you’ve seen comps of Dwayne Wade Victor Olipo when he was young I’ve seen some other comps like a Christian Brown of the Denver Nuggets For me he kind of gives me shades of an Andre Agodala maybe a Matis Styel hopefully better He’s gonna have to develop elements of his game How can he create for himself off the dribble and trying to get to the rack and create for others with passes how does this shot come along now he’s an explosive athlete and that shows up as a finisher and on defense in transition on the fast break He will have some highlight reel worthy plays and we’re probably going to see it right from the get-go during the NBA summer league in Las Vegas He’s also shown the ability to develop into an elite shooter on the perimeter I really like the form He is still working on that creation off the dribble but that is something that you can develop over time Last year with Baylor he was playing on a senior laden team and so sometimes he deferred to some of those other players 15 points per game five and a half rebounds more than two steals and he shot just under 44% from the floor After a slow start to the year shooting the Rock in the last 17 games the points per game went up to 17 18 points and he shot around 36% from three and the field goal percentage also went higher And so I think that right away he will be an elite defender playing off ball He’s going to be very exciting in transition if he can develop the dribble game and he can develop a jump shot He has so much potential Some people were saying today “Oh man Anthony Edwards that’s a potential comp.” I’m not going to go that far But I like the mentality I like the work ethic I like the character in the city of Philadelphia We love players who get it out the mud Him and his family lived off a generator for seven years He’s developed scholarship funds for kids in the Bahamas and everybody seems to love his personality I also got this message from a buddy who went to Baylor and obviously follows that program closely I want to pass it along VJ is a freak athlete with raw talent I don’t think he knows how good he is sometimes He was often trying to be a team player Baylor had a few seniors that were running the team He could have driven to the basket every possession if he wanted to but sometimes he would give it up to those seniors because he knew they were leading the squad When we would be down in a game he would click into another version of himself pull out an insane dunk or a deep three that no one saw coming He may not have looked like the best in all categories but his potential I think is the highest in this draft class So myself and Chip going to give this selection of VJ Edgecomb a Bgrade and I’m rooting for the kid I’m really excited to see him on the floor with Philadelphia and NBA Summer League which is coming up here very shortly in the start of July And Chad your thoughts on VJ Edgecom a highlight reel worthy player You just hope that that shot comes along Absolutely And that’s really the big thing for him Will that shot come along but I do like this pick for the Sixers And I’ve seen some people and honestly more people than I would have thought that aren’t huge fans of the pick Some people say all they can do is dunk and play defense I think he’s more than that His athleticism really does show on both ends of the floor I mean Chase mentioned it like the defense is really special It’s really his calling card He’s not just a good defender in terms of like being able to stay in front of guys and keep guys away from the basket but he makes a lot of special plays defensively too generating turnovers rising up for blocks like stuff that you just don’t see a whole lot of guys do right because of his athleticism and the shooting which is again is really the swing skill for him I’m confident that that it can come along I’m confident that it can at least be average to slightly above average Do I think he’ll ever be special in that regard no I don’t know if he’ll ever be a special shot creator But look on this team I think he fits right in And with the mentality that he plays with the edge that he plays with the the high character guy that he is he clearly loves basketball He knows how much he’s going to have to put in and how much work he’s going to put in and the time and the effort it takes to be the kind of player he wants to be He already seems to have a good relationship with Tyrese Maxi They’ve already been talking a little bit So seems like he fits in very well with the culture and for a Sixers team that say has had some culture issues over the years just a great pick from that regard in particular So I know some people are out on it They’re saying another guard he can’t shoot this and that I’ I’d encourage you to to give it some time Even if he doesn’t reach superstar upside and maybe one day will be a better player I still believe in what VJ can be as a very very good starter on this team one day Again even if he doesn’t reach that ultra high upside Couple more things 6’4 but his wingspan is 6’8 His max vertical 38 12 in His last two years in high school according to Synergy data he shot 42.8% on threes on 208 attempts There’s a lot of volume there And something that I’ve said a couple of times the stroke is very smooth It’s not a clunky bad mechanically put together jump shot The form is something that you can build off of and that’s a great foundation and base And then Chip alluded to it too For a majority of my lifetime real ones know the Sixers have been a very dysfunctional organization You look across the sports complex of the Philadelphia Eagles they’re always a well-run team Jeffrey Lur Howie Roseman great culture there They’ve now won two championships since 2017 The Eagles should do or the Sixers should do everything that the Eagles are trying to do or have done excuse me in developing building a good culture And I think the Sixers have a couple of guys who help this culture fortify Tyrese Maxi the pulse of the organization always smiling always positive Jiren McCain make fun of his Tik Toks but he has that vivacious personality He too is always positive VJ Edgecom has that to his personality as well He also has this intensity this competitiveness this confidence that I think will help him He said after the draft I’m great at every single sport that I play And that’s going to bode well for him playing in a pressure cooker that is the city of Philadelphia Also he was working out today and the clips that I saw really impressive shotmaking ability on some contested shots in the drills that he was going through already wearing a Sixers shirt Before we continue to push forward Jai Broom coming up next Be sure to hit that subscribe button 76ers news analysis rumors all year long Keep in mind free agency is coming up here at the start of next week If you want a VJ Edgecomb jersey get yours today chatsports.com/v-j You see that link down below you read that chatports.comv-j You plug in that link it’ll take you to Fanatics Fanatics will know that chatport sent you edge right now because Kyle Lowry expected to return and wear the number seven Gonna wear number 77 for Philadelphia Iffy on the number It is the Luca number But Lowry you’re an old vet It’s your final year Give up number seven for the rook He’s going to be here for longer than you were All right To a controversial pick at 35 overall Jai Broom the big out of Auburn SEC player of the year first team all-American arguably the best player in college basketball last year All that being said Chip and I did not love the pick We thought it was a reach Here’s why Janai Broom is a big who is too small and too slow to play the four not big enough to play the five His vertical leap was non-existent He’s not a good athlete He’s not twitchy His most elite trait is hustle having swagger being a dog and toughness And I just worry how his game translates to the NBA level He is a crafty finisher but how’s he going to be able to finish as a tweener between a four and a five at just 69 he’s not that fast He might struggle to guard in the pick and roll The twoman game he could really struggle be put in a blender I love how he brings NBA ready experience to the Sixers I like how he’s going to be able to play right away I think it’s good that he brings confidence and will help add to the Sixers culture He shows a lot of emotion He leads with effort He runs the floor hard He hustles He communicates In the Elite 8 there was a sequence where he hurt his elbow came back hit a three and then blocked the shot grabbing onearmed rebounds He’s a very hard-nosed defender Has good timing on that side of the floor He did average two blocks per game last year but is he going to be able to block shots at just 69 he’s a bad free throw shooter He can’t really shoot the three And Chip and I just thought there were better players available who could have helped the Sixers more right now and been more upside selections He is a savvy passer out of the low block and high block He has good vision to hit cutters and to kick out to shooters The production last year was not an issue at all Almost 19 points per game almost 11 rebounds That’s fantastic But at 69 going up against superior athletes I’m just not sure how he’s going to be able to be productive He’s gonna have a very difficult time Another thing people have said the Sixers just got their own Draymond Green That’s disrespectful to Draymond Draymond is a top five defensive player in the history of basketball Jai Broom is not an elite defender He might give this team swagger and toughness a chip on the shoulder He might be intense He might lead like Draymond but Draymond Green could handle the basketball Draymond Green could run the offense Draymond Green could operate the DHOs He could shoot the three earlier in his career and he was a spectacular defender and still is He’s an allNBA defender still at this point of his career Jai Broom doesn’t have that type of defensive upside Only made 31.2% of his threes in five college years 61% on his free throws So if he can’t reliably space the floor and he’s not knocking down shots hitting free throws that’s an issue Not elite at switching Seven foot wingspan is solid not great and he’s not really that nimble to handle some of those switches So the pluses college production great college player but great college players aren’t always great NBA players I like how he can add toughness leadership and another culture fit for the Sixers And we’ll know more in the NBA summer league because I want to see how the lack of athletic juice translates to NBA caliber play So we’re going to go C-grade here C-grade I think is very fair D I think would be too harsh I’m not going to go anything higher than a C Another issue if the Sixers would have made this pick at 55 totally fine with it At 35 though that’s within range where we’ve seen in recent years Jaylen Brunson go Nicole Joic go Chris Middleton Draymond Green they all kind of went within that range You can get impactful players there I just thought it was a big reach Chip your thoughts i have to agree You know when when this pick was made I was just shocked the Sixers went this route And you know for Broom I’ve I’ve seen the comments already you know on our live show when we’ve been talking about him as a player that we’re too harsh on him that you know saying all these things that he’s not as bad as we’re we’re saying And I want I want this to be clear like he was obviously very good in college and Chase brought up you know the culture fit the mentality fit I do appreciate that he’s a guy who you know has had to work hard in his career Started his career at Morehead State for two years then transfers to Auburn So obviously not very highly recruited at the start He had to work himself up as a player and develop himself up as a player To go from starting your career at Morehead State to nearly being the national player of the year at Auburn and almost winning a national championship like that obviously takes hard work dedication I can respect that a lot out of him right and so I think from a culture perspective he plays hard He plays with a fire under his ass Like he’s definitely you know a Philadelphia kind of guy right But at the end of the day that’s all good What can you do on the court you know and I’m just worried that what he excels at and what he did excel at in college is going to be difficult for him to excel at in the NBA That’s that’s really what it is for me very good offensive rebounder at college Yeah But is he going to be able to do that in the NBA against bigger opponents against better athletes the passing the vision out of the low post that should play right and then that’s something you you can get excited about But and Chase you know Chase brought this up If you’re going to play his style of play which is style of play you expect out of a center but you’re only 69 that’s fine You got to have some athleticism Horrible athlete not a great defender and again can’t space the floor So can he develop a three-point shot i would seriously doubt it If he does that does change his outlook because all of a sudden you have a guy now that you can space out the floor He can play the four where I don’t think he can play right now because I think he’s too slowooted defensively and he can’t space the floor Yeah But if he can maybe that’s a little bit of a better outlook I’m going to be rooting for the guy 100% no matter what Obviously had the success in college We’ll see if he can take that mentality he had to the NBA now being a second round pick but I really just thought there were better options at the time Doesn’t matter now Who was the big that you wanted i wanted Maxim Reo He ended up getting drafted by the Sacramento Kings He’s a center who can space the floor He’s very skilled offensively Not a great defender Yeah But he’s still big He can still He dominates on the glass More of a traditionally sized center who also fits in the modern NBA because he can space the floor and he can do some things with the ball Broom kind of a throwback style player Honestly I don’t really look around the NBA and see a whole lot of guys in his kind of mold right usually guys in his mold who aren’t these great athletes are usually really good defenders and he’s not a really good defender So I’ll be rooting for him no matter what for sure Excited to see him play hopefully for this team and we’ll see But right now not very high in the pick Yeah So those are our draft grades Uh Chip will do a UDFA video tomorrow We know of one as of right now and it’s after 11 pm Eastern According to Shams Wake Forest Hunter Salis has agreed to a two-way NBA contract with the 76ers If he was in the draft last year probably gets drafted averaged 18 points per game shot 40% from three went back to school shot it poorly went undrafted Great pedigree five-star guy who struggled at Gonaga He is another guard but that’s a name to remember once summer league comes around Sixers get him on a two-way contract Our overall draft grades for the 76ers We’ve warmed up to Edgecomb Janai is so interesting because Daryl Moy loves upside selections He’s kind of tapped out and so the C-grade there balances us to a B minus But obviously we’re hoping for the best for the one two three four five sixers Grade the 76ers 2025 NBA draft Are you with us higher lower you let us know That’s the beauty of our platform here The broome pick isn’t that bad. He’s a role player who is great at rebounding and plays defense
Broome lead the SEC in scoring and rebounding…
Yall hate Ace because he didn't kiss the ring and still went top 5…
The NBA is not the NFL. You can pass on a 5-star talent and not have a job in 2 years…
Love the pick. He is an old school Buck Williams power forward. He is on the block grabbing boards and getting tip backs. Joel will be playing on the perimeter and when the guards go to the rim they will be passings the ball to him for a layup or he grab a rebound and put it back in the bucket. Ready for the summer league. And the end to this stretch four crap.
B plus but it doesn’t matter I’m still frustrated from this process garbage
VJ is going to play real hard I actually really like that pick
I’m taking a wait and see approach with Broome. His measureables are very similar to Onyeka’s and O is a good Center. I think athleticism is the main thing, but not everything. I need to see how he does with NBA comp.
A
Bro this dude
Is so down on broom this is alil wild
I hope he works out
At least a solid role player
So he can eat his words fr
Sound alil hateful
Both of this selections make the sixers tougher and mature. I’ll give them a B+, I can’t wait till summer league
D ….why draft another guard 🤔
Wonder why they don’t win
EPN analyst rates Broome as a B+ he was considered the second best player in College basketball. I think the common draft theme is THEY HAVE good work effort. I think that's why they were picked.
These guys are going to do what ever Nick Nurse coaches them to do. Unlike aka Cookie Crumble Jr. KELLY O…….. GIVE THEM TWO YEARS TO DEVOLP
Solid B; added two productive players for the second unit!
