The Spurs Are Building a DEFENSIVE MONSTER!

i gotta say spurs fans i didn’t see it before but i see it now and it is absolutely terrifying for other teams what is up san antonio spurs fans welcome to tsr sports tgif and i was thinking about our draft and prior players with their spurs and the direction our spurs are going and i was like you know what wait a minute tsr think about this follow me for a second david robinson former defensive player of the year first team all defense tim duncan i can’t even count how many first team and second team all defense has timmy got kawhi leonard two-time defensive player of the year what do they have all in common defense and with the selection of carter bryant i think our spurs have a plan defense defense with guys that can guard multiple positions and say what you will about defense it still wins championships the oklahoma city thunder had the best defensive rating in the nba and they’re the champions the other team in the nba finals the indiana pacers they finished 14th in the regular season eighth in the playoffs so they’re about average in defense however the champion the thunder were number one in the nba playoffs in defense too and oklahoma city thunder were running a lot of wings and yes two bigs at times as well but what i saw from them was defensive versatility players that can switch and i think our spurs are shooting for the same thing which would make sense who to better model off than the nba champions or sam preston chip england all right former spurs there moving right along let’s talk about who we have on the team right now victor wmanyama will likely guard the four through five i don’t know if he’s generally been tasked to guard the three but he is the best shot blocker in the nba not even close 3.8 blocks a game this season and his ability to cover ground and make up for his teammates missing an assignment and just blocking shots and not only blocking shots but his recovery time we’ve seen wy block a shot this way the ball goes this way turns around and then he’s blocking the other player as well he may have even done that three times in one possession i don’t know but what he can do is absolutely incredible in the paint yes a big part of that is because of his height and his reach but it’s also his basketball iq we have an extremely talented anchor on the defense a surefire defensive player of the year as long as he hits the 65game quota he would have hit it last season probably should have had his rookie season if we’re being honest but moving right along after whmy jeremy sohan a lot of spurs fans want to trade the sohandan i i know he’s got to work on things offensively but defensively he can guard the one through five ideally we don’t see a whole lot of center sohan next season but he has shown the ability to do so and he’s almost always on the opposing team’s best offensive player luca steph ant whoever and he generally does an amazing job jeremy so is one of the best wing stoppers when it comes to perimeter iso dean his defensive he anchor anchor that’s what i’m going this is another anchor looking at the rest of the team drafting carter bryant couldn’t get a good read looking at his scout reports on what positions he exactly guarded at arizona but appears he would likely guard the two through four i’m reading he’s quick enough to guard smaller players which would be the two but bigger players which would be the four so two through four seems more than likely he had a high steel rate in college and was good at contesting shots and i’ll admit guys i may have slept on that pick a little bit draft night we saw so many mods have us taking carter bryant when we eventually took carter bryant i was like “okay that’s that’s the guy.” what i hadn’t done though is look at more recent mocks leading up to the draft because i had looked at so many i was kind of getting a little burned out in the mocks as many of you were and i didn’t realize he was moving up on a lot of draft boards i saw one where he was move when he moved up to 10th but i was like “all right one scout analysis whatever has him going at 10th but everybody pretty much has him going at 14th.” so it sounds like he was a steal and i think i slept on a little i’m not afraid to admit that and there’s a lot of potential there we’re going to be using the word potential again here with our pick from last year reigning rookie of the year stephon castle the guard the one through three i know he’s got things he needs to work on i couldn’t find it online it’s either his offball defense or on ball defense needs work but i’m pretty sure it’s his offball defense is a bigger issue but there’s also yes potential there but versatility and with the four guys i mentioned i see versatility and i’m liking the direction of the team with defensive versatility the offense just needs to cook as well and this is where players come in like dearon fox dylan harper and for now demicel and kell johnson i don’t know how long either player to be honest with you will be on the spurs with the drafting and carter bryant with the direction of the team but they are here for now and i wish them the best and with maybe more of a defensive minded strategy with our draft wmy was the obvious no-brainer in 2023 but best defensive player in the draft so in the year before castle last year bryant this year i know harper’s not a defensive beast but that was the best player available position at the number two spot but i think we’re really working and brian brian wright has said this with the positionless thing i think we’re looking for defensive versatility and we really really have it with these three guys here plus castle maybe why that’s spurs fans maybe why with this defensive versatility we’re going for maxim raino was not drafted by the spurs maybe that’s why they drafted that or traded that second round pick before the draft even started and did not try to trade it back into the second round last night and you know my apologies for the language in the short i would have loved him at 38 not just because he’s wendy’s buddy but i read a lot of good things about him and he was projected to be a late firstrounder with him sitting there at 38 i thought “oh i wanted him i really wanted him.” but it wasn’t meant to be and i got to think the spurs have another plan let me just actually add this in here i’m shocked not just here in our community but looking elsewhere there’s a lot of spurs fans that are like “who cares about a second round pick i mean not every second round pick is going to be a mono jernobyl not every second round pick is going to be a nicole joic of course but as a spurs fan disregarding second picks i don’t think that not not it should not be coming from us you know what i mean as spurs fans would be like you could say “hey tsr reo reo wasn’t the guy so who cares whatever.” but to just disregard second round picks in general when it’s been such a huge part of our franchise come on man h that being said um this must mean we’re getting a big somewhere guys we have to get we we cannot we cannot cannot roll out wby yes roll out wmy followed by bassie and bambo that is not going to work i like charles bassie he has shown potential as well there’s a word we’re using a lot here potential as a rim protector and rebounder but he’s been inconsistent and more importantly he can’t stay on the court he’s been injured what three years in a row now with our spurs it’s time to move on thank you for your service once a spur always a spur it ain’t working cut ties with him bismbo you want to keep him on as depth as a 14th or 15th player on the roster okay how many spots do we have we had 10 guaranteed contracts we just drafted that’s 12 players we have three spots plus the 32a contracts i got to think spurs fans something’s got something’s got to be there somewhere where we’re getting a big i see with the recent pick that the sixers made in the second round i saw a filling website report that it seems like they’re going to be moving off from moving on from gershan yahoo selling is that a player we’re definitely going to sign it would make sense but it doesn’t really it checks some of the boxes but we still don’t have another big big a sevenfooter after whmy so i’m not sure what the plan is there i’ll do a video on that future maybe that’ll be tomorrow’s video but i like the direction we’re going i think we’re trending in the right direction we have our franchise player we have defensive versatility the scoring my my big question mark is will not the scoring per se but the shooting the shooting’s got to come around you right above me just be an average three-point shooter we see you working out in the offseason the weird hitch in your shot is gone keep doing what you’re doing stefon castle abysmal from three-point land last year shot what under 29% he’s working with the guard whisper who also worked with sga hey that’s good good good person your game after and if he can get his three-point shooting to a lot of ifs again but this is what when when you have young players guys this is what we’re going to have we’re going to have ifs and potential because we don’t know what their ceiling is castle’s been in the league one year carter harper haven’t played an nba minute jeremy so for all the slack he gets he’s still young he 21 right now we haven’t seen the ceiling those guys we have not seen victor webbyama ceiling we’ve seen about a season and a half from wby how freaking high is his ceiling i love the direction of the team even if i might get upset at times and be critical things much like last night during the second round draft reaction i like where we’re going and good times are coming for the opposing teams this is going to be scary when they figure it out and put it all together watch out nba here comes another spurs dynasty calling it out another dynasty drop a comment down below you think i’m crazy with what i’m talking about are you on the sohan no bryant no tsr you’re crazy we should have traded for durant should have traded for jiannis curious your thoughts this is a different type of video this made from the ground up i don’t do a lot of these usually i piggy back off of air alamo or pounding the rock or spurs tuck or or whoever i want to kind of give my own take on things and the direction of the team and i love the direction of the team i really do i think it’s going to be a fun season it’s going to be a fun next decade of destruction hit the thumbs up sports channel and subscribe to become part of our awesome spurs community i thank you and as always go spurs go let’s go a

The San Antonio Spurs defense just got another upgrade with the drafting of Carter Bryant!

  1. It is VERY hard for me to see passing on the 38th pick as anything other than a missed opportunity. Maxine, may or may not have been an answer to SA’s needs, but he would have been the only other 7 footer on the team AND he wouldn’t have cost you much. SA is now in the position of having to get a big in the trade market. Hard to see the reasons not to take a chance on Maxine given the cost of a 2nd round pick when your backup centers are Charles (Always hurt) Bassey, Biyambo and Sochan.

To be fair, I’ll reserve judgement until we see who SA gets on the trade market. But I can guarantee you that whoever it is, he is going to cost A LOT more than Maxine!!!

  2. To the front-court guys you have on the title graphic for this video, add Castle and now Harper. Wembanyama patrolling the paint, everyone else can switch on defense to any wing or guard, and even some bigs. Or heck, let loose the dogs of war and everyone switches vs. certain opposing lineups.

Yeah, I know there are "fans" who doubt Castle's and Sochan's shooting, but let's see if their hard work off-season pays off.

As for Raynaud, I'm really disappointed that the Spurs traded away the 2nd round pick that could have been used to nab him. However, he landed on the Kings, so when they need help again from SA to make a trade work, perhaps we can get him as a sweetner. 😀

  3. We're definitely building a defensive jaggernaut, but we also need more shooting. This team lacks so much shooting the only reliable shooters on the team are Barnes, Champagnie and Wemby some nights in my opinion hopefully Bryant can add more shooting into the team but we need more.

  4. I would really have loved Reynaud on the spurs for so many reasons but at the end of the day I am just a fan and I trust the front office to make the right moves as they have in the past.

  5. The Spurs are doing TOO MUCH good things that it's getting harder to get angry immediately at them like usual. Next season I'm gonna have to say "We didnt' win by 50?! This team sucks!"

  6. The last piece we need is a backup 5, like luke kornet. With that, I think we are able to start competing

  7. have you seen all the Castle clips on youtube hanging out with the streamer Faze lol its very random! look it up bro

  8. I think it will be the lineup, Fox , castle, Bryant, sochan and wemby. Harper would come off the bench. I think we gonna trade vassell for sure

  9. I'm glad you can see it now TSR! I saw how disappointed you were on draft night with the Spurs not drafting a big😂The big will come from free agency 😉

  10. This defense is gonna be actually pretty scary! Bring back that 48 MINUTES OF HELL!🏀🔥

  11. A quick question… why didn't Bryant play more at Arizona? Was he behind some really good upperclassmen or something? Then why are we talking about drafting THAT dude?

  12. Bryant better than Jeremy just wait and see.. fox will start but not for long Harper nice, castle will be our 2 guard I don’t like him at the 3 he 6’6. Johnson and Vassell getting traded possibly Barnes we need a backup pf or a starting center

  13. Completely skeptical. They've had yearly prototypes of defensive minded wings that do not pan out since 2015.

  14. I think the Spurs are being particular about the center that they want to put around Wemby. They did workout Maluach and Berringer twice. The big athletic floor runner, rim protector, rebounding, defensive minded center but also that can shoot the three. That is difficult to find and at a good price. Until then I think the Spurs hang on to Bassey and continue to sign the cheap vets like Biyombo.

  15. The thing with 2nd round picks, at least for the moment, is that they don't hold the same value. Everyone is hip on foreign players and are looking for the next Manu , Marc Gasol, or Jokic so players that might have gone 52nd in past years are getting snatched up in the 1st. Yang Hansen going 16th and Joan Beringer going 17th are perfect examples. Also due to NIL money, the 2nd round is going to be much weaker for the next few years because players would rather return to college and get paid then risk going undrafted. This is why they kicked the can down the road to 2030 when we should start seeing a ton of developed 4 or 5 year players coming out ready to be thrown in team rotations and not needing entire season or seasons in Austin to develop like all these one and down college players have needed.

  16. Second round picks is where you get second stringers. It was a head scratcher that we didn’t stick and pick one of the four or five quality big that were available from 30-42.

  17. Spurs tend to not bring in more than 2 rookies, so i dont totally dislike the trading out the 2nd round pick

  18. The main thing for me is: has Wemby fully recovered and if so is he ready to take the next step?.. I’m a bit worried since we haven’t seen any clip of him practicing… I hope I’m wrong :/

  19. But haven't we reached a point in basketball where defense is becoming more and more superfluous?
I love a good defense, don't get me wrong. It just seems for the past 10 years a top 10 offense actually gets you to the playoffs.
Also, you can be extremely talented on one-on-one defense and still have terrible team defense. That has been one of my loudest moans over the past 3 years. Go back and look at the tape and see how many wide open corner threes we have allowed. That's not effort that's system.

  20. They went and poached Sean Sweeney from Dallas. That alone should tell you how focused they are on becoming a defensive juggernaut

  21. Fox Castle Barnes Sochan WEMBY
Harper Vassel Keldon/Bryant Champ Center TBD. Would’ve liked if MAMU got play somehow but don’t see it now

  22. If Spurs can find a way to keep KJ and find a good backup center for Vassell, a bench player or two or some draft assets, Spurs will be looking VERY good and DEEP.

  23. I think we should and will get another backup big, but Biyombo is really good interior defender, and also sound offensively. We would be fine if he was replacing Wemby for 15 minutes.

  24. Brian Wright is an idiot GM. Trading draft picks a day before when you don't know if a player could be available!!! It's a second round pick!!! It's not guaranteed money and low cost for Reynaud!!!! I have no faith in Brian Wright and that's why even with Wemby we are going to have a hard time getting to the level of the Thunder just from the draft and trade aspect of building a championship team. Sam Presti has been playing chess while Brian Wright is still playing checkers!!! I feel your frustration!!!

I hate the word positionless. Anyone can guard anyone at any position but can they do it good and effectively. There comes a point where size and height comes into guarding anyone and Brian Wright obviously does not understand that!!! Size does matter in the NBA!!! I'm sorry but defensive monster with this squad. No. When Wemby went out, all I saw the rest of the season was the Spurs run and up down the court trying to outscore everyone and played no defense. Besides Wemby, Castle and Sochan, none of the other Spurs love to play defense and that's a problem to get to the level of a Thunder team that thrives on the defensive end. I hope Carter is the defensive stopper you think he is. We still have a long ways to go to be a defensive juggernaut the Spurs of yesteryear were. Go, Spurs, Go!!!

  25. I guess the front office might make zero move, or there would be 3 possible direction of moves upcoming, which would be very extreme case.

    1. Signing someone like Brook Lopez with 15-20M for 2 years, that wouldn't hurt our salary cap for Fox & Wemby contract renewal in 2026,2027. Or signing 2-3 lower price PF/Cs like Bol Bol or Luke Kornet etc with under 10M contracts, 2-3 years type.
    2. Trading out contracts like KJ with a 2nd round pick for a lower cost PF/C, which the contract cost also around 10M to save money.
    3. The craziest ever thought but possible, trading in Jokic or Bam. Jokic package would be like DV+HB+Sochan , with 4 future first rounders, 4 second rounders. These 3 salary adding together would be lower than Jokic , with the 8 picks in hand and lower salary pressure, and also HB is having an expiring contract in 2026, Denver can rebuild very quickly with making extra moves. For us Spurs, we'll be able to secure our upcoming 5 years to be extremely competitive like a contender level. With this move, we'll have to be very careful with moving KJ's contract too or we'll drop into a hole that Wemby, Fox and Castle's contract renewal. Harper new contract would be about the time Jokic's and maybe even Fox's contract expiring, there will be other moves require by then but now if we can get Jokic, that's gonna be awesome.
Bam's package might be smaller, and Pat might want to stuff in some players that we don't want to eat up and taking our cap space.
