NBA Draft Reactions – Pick No. 23, The New Orleans Pelicans Trade Asa Newell To The Atlanta Hawks!

coming in at pick number 23 Asa Newell stays in state going from Georgia to the Atlanta Hawks kind of feels like a Hawkian player to me i think of Anka and Congo and it’s like that is who Asa Noel’s best case scenario is he was someone who I loved coming out of Mont Verde i think he showed some flashes at at UG the the jump shot to me is the swing skill here because he’s a super high motor kid who’s a great rebounder always gives it 100% plays above the rim just a little bit undersized i’m not really sure if he’s a four or five don’t think he’s at this point doesn’t have the handle or quite mobile enough to be a four he’s a little bit on the shorter end to be a five nevertheless think he can carve out a role based on his motor and some of the what he can do defensively alone but yeah Dion where are you at once new and how he fits with the Hawks
i don’t love New’s game but let’s give Atlanta some credit here there was a rumor where they were going to take him at 13 they ended up moving 13 to New Orleans falling back to 23 gaining a pick later on for New Orleans to move up to take Derrick Queen i don’t really feel like New Orleans traded a bunch to get Derrick Queen if I’m being honest however if you’re Atlanta and you gain assets to get the guy you wanted anyway that’s a great value pick and I think Atlanta did exactly what they set out to do tonight they got the player that they clearly wanted at 13 10 spots later added assets saved a little bit of salary too which like when you’re trying to compete that makes sense they have Porzingis now they have on Kungu i’m assuming Capella Capella has to be a free agent uh
yes you’re right he is okay i was going to say like there’s no way Capella isn’t a free agent with all the bigs they just got but you know Ana Ku I’m a big fan of porzingis who I’m a massive fan of i know there’s the injury concerns but seven foot big man he can put the ball on the ground to shoot threes and block shots are you kidding me like we I’ll take my chances and then you add new to that core along with everything that else they have trey Young Zachary Reach Dyson Daniels um there’s Billy don’t forget my guy V Kry out of Czech Republic
who
v Kryie he’s like the 68 point guard can play a little two guard as well did he Did he play any of that last year yeah he was like their backup point guard
really he’s got he’s like a super flashy passer who can get to the rim he’s got a he’s got a sleeve of tattoos i can’t believe you never watch V Krchie v Krchie’s electric
no good for him good but I I like what Alen is trying to do here i I like what they’re trying to do i don’t know how what the the result it will yield but they’re trying to do something
also I just realized I originally mentioned that he’s a little oneka Konglooi i was looking back at our NBA comps when we did the scouting report for him my best case for him was John Collins so it’s like hey you might have gotten the guy who you let go to Collins is Khan still on Utah
he is i I think if you told me you can get John Collins at 23 i love that
i think there’s a lot of that in Newell’s game with like the explosiveness and a streaky jump shot but you see a jump shot there um but he’s still most comfortable just crashing the glass and catching lobs and having the highlight plays i I think Newuel he could be a fan favorite pretty quickly because I just I can’t stress enough how hard this dude plays and in a season that lasts 82 games that we know is really long like you can endear yourself to a fan base pretty quick by doing the dirty work i mean Newuel played on that Mont Ver team that went 33 and0 where he must have been probably the third or fourth option you’re saying he’s playing with Cooper Flag Derek Queen Liam McNeely like he got used to doing the the dirty work and letting those dudes take all the shots you know he’s not going to complain he’s been a career winner he was on a Georgia team that made the tournament under Mike White like I’m not a Mike White guy at all i’m not a Georgia basketball guy at all they had Georgia ranked for half the dang season man like I I think Noel can do a lot of good things that more on the intangible side but there there’s plenty to work with on the court as well i mean five-star recruit from Mont Verde by that pedigree all day every day
yeah no I couldn’t agree more i think super cool mom verd having four dudes drafted though right like obviously I’m speaking a little bit into existence with McNeely little ways to go
got picked as we as we’re recording this
oh so four dudes drafted in the first round officially and we’ll have another video on McNeely up on the channel as well but uh that’s crazy i I can’t believe he went that low but anyway
well four dudes from the same high school picked in the first round all one and done right
yeah yeah all one and done
that’s really impressive
yeah I if there’s any there’s any knock on Newell just to to bring it back to him it is the size that he’s a little bit of a tweener and I I want to see him continue to refine the jump shot i think the form looks good he’s a lefty shot i think around 29% from three so that obviously needs to go way up didn’t really handle much or pass much at Georgia this past year that’s the those are those are the swing skills right there if he doesn’t ever get a consistent jumper or can’t playmake at all or handle his ceiling becomes way diminished and we’re looking at a guy who’s you know playing eight minutes a game and really just in there to grab boards as opposed to someone who’s a legit rotation piece and gives you flexibility in the front court
yeah i mean I I I think no matter what you’re getting something right like that’s that the way you describe is best in a worst case scenario you’re just you’re getting a rotation piece and I I think that’s important for an Atlanta team who needs a good amount of stuff but they have their star in Trey Young and it’s like how can we build around him to where he doesn’t want to be moved every move they made this off seasonason I think is kind of trending towards him sticking around which is a good
