last night in the NBA draft they didn’t select anybody in the top 30 picks however what they did do is trade into tonight’s second round they already had the 54th pick now they’ve got the 38th pick as well they like the way the first round kind of shaped up and the p the person that they can get with that 38th pick we’re going to see what they can do with 38 that’s going to be kind of interesting the difference between a first round’s pick and a second round pick especially in that first 10 player area in the second round is kind of similar to the way the the NFL draft works mostly it’s not about the quality of the player quite as much as it is about the cost of the player in the first round you’re paying three plus million for a player in the second you’re playing you’re paying one plus so if you can get a first round talent at 38 which the Pacers have done in the past for second round money do a little bit of good work with Herb Simon’s cash which I know Herb Simon really appreciates we’re going to talk about that a little bit we’ll also talk about the way the Indiana sports kind of climate has turned upside down it’s inverted back in the day when we would do research about Indianapolis sports and what was popular what moved the needle for Indiana Sports Talk Radio in this market you found that the Colts and the Hooers basketball hooers kind of led the march as the only things that you could talk about that really kind of galvanized an audience not anymore it’s completely flipped on its head over the last uh month especially with the uh with the Indiana Pacers but really over the last year things have changed marketkedly in this town as far as what’s popular and what’s not it’s not that the Colts and Indiana Basketball aren’t popular anymore but they have been uh kind of vaulted over by other entities and other concerns we’ll talk about that too cuz I think it’s kind of fascinating i didn’t see it coming right like the Pacers have always sort of languished not anymore like th this is now it’s sort of a Pacers town right now Pacers are hot having just played a sevengame NBA final series the first in the NBA since 2016 all of a sudden they’re hot indiana football is hot they went to the college football playoff they’re hotter than the basketball program i didn’t think that was ever going to happen we’re going to talk all about that we’ll talk about the Cubs winning in St louis yesterday 8- nothing they got a chance today to earn a split over the Cardinals in that four game set in which the the Cubs lost the first two and we’ll talk let’s talk about the Indiana Pacers kevin Pritchard and Chad Buchanan little bit of business last night in trading into the second round again they’ve had they have their own pick at 54 they traded with the Spurs to acquire the 38th overall pick in the second round and uh so you know you’re going to get the 38th best player in the draft i guess they like the way the draft has fallen they think that at some in the first eight they’re going to find a player that the eighth pick tonight they’re going to find a player that they like at a bargain rate and that’s a good thing kulkr Brener maybe I don’t know is he going to last to 38 who knows uh Danny Wolf would have been and McNeely would have been available at 23 last night and I think both those guys pretty damn good uh we’ll see a super senior out of Florida State pretty good player we’ll see if the the Pacers kind of lock in on him that the only problem with that kid is he can’t shoot kid man been playing B college basketball for a long time uh but we’ll see what they do and we’ll see if that helps moving forward the the Pacers are in a position roster-wise where they really don’t need a lot of help i mean Hallebertton’s down you don’t know what’s going to happen with Miles Turner but everybody else is under contract for the most part uh Thomas Bryant the only other rotational player not under contract here we go sports says “Do you think the Pacers are looking for a temporary guard or somebody to replace uh temporarily Hallebertton i think they’re looking for somebody to make him better i I don’t think you’re going to replace Hallebertton with the 38th overall pick in in this draft i I think you’re going to have to make some kind of a deal someplace to acquire another guard if you want to replace him.” And and really what you’re likely doing is not replacing Hallebertton as much as you’re replacing Nembard who may slide to the one and and even at that if Matine moves to the two then you’re you’re kind of replacing Mathine as sort of that that scoring piece off the bench does that make sense so you’re kind of you’re moving guys and this is assuming that Nhard kind of slides into the Hallebertton role and Matine slides into the Nhard role better scorer than Nehard but slides into that role what you’re looking for is somebody then to fill that void on the bench that’s created by Nehard and Mathan taking a step up that makes sense uh but 38 I I think you can get a good player in the 50s you’re not going to get a great player in the 50s here’s what the Pacers have gotten in recent drafts um AJ Price George Nang Hugo Besson Isaiah Wong Enrique For Freeman so uh the best uh Pacers draft pick in the 50s maybe ever but certainly in the last 30 years Fred Hoyberg so that kind of tells you what you’re going to get in the the 50s uh we talked about Nemhard nemhard was the second round pick in the 30s so that tells you kind of the difference between drafting in the 30s and drafting in the 50s in the 30s you you got a pick where maybe you get somebody who’s sort of a first round talent but slid out of the first in the 50s you you’re not getting a first round talent ever that’s not going to happen so it it’s quite a bit of difference but 38th and 54th tonight we’ll see what they do with those picks they could make another move kevin Pritchard is a really really adept trader of assets and acquirer of assets via trade he is a great trader not good great uh let’s talk about the new paradigm in Indianapolis sports like it’s always been Colts and Indiana basketball that’s what it’s been forever now you can make the argument that this is a Pacers town and that the Colts take a a backseat to the Pacers the NFL is king in the United States but the Pacers with the last year’s run to the Eastern Conference Finals and this year’s run through the Eastern Conference Finals to the NBA Finals kind of galvanized this community uh back you know even a a year and a half ago you would see no Pacers swag out on the streets now it’s everywhere colts not so much things are a little bit different down in Bloomington indiana football is king kurt Signetti has revolutionized Indiana football in a single year they went from the doormats of the Big 10 under Tom Allen to college football playoffbound under Kurt Signetti and not to crap on Tom Allen because that year where where Indiana in the COVID shortened gear where they were like six and one and and Michael Pennock got the the stretch and score against Penn State to beat the Nitney Lions you know what um that team would have gone to the college football playoff if it had expanded to 12 then so uh there is that we don’t want to just like Tom Allen was a buffoon and it’s not that it there was a good team under Tom Allen but Indiana football sustained success under Kurt Signetti can happen so uh that has become kind of a uh the focal point of sports fans related to Indiana University over the top of basketball now there’s hope for basketball because Darren Dere is replacing Mike Woodson under Mike Woodson there was no hope under uh Darren Dere there’s absolute hope we don’t know what this team’s going to be nobody returns as it stands right now anthony Le and Luke Goody are still waiting for their the disposition of their medical red shirt appeal but we this could be an entirely different team are they going to win our hearts quickly like that is Darren Deere going to be able to put this thing back on the tracks we’re gonna find out but and and then the Colts the Colts are kind of the big question mark but you can make the argument that the Fever are the second most popular sports team in this community because they went out and got kind of the uh women’s basketball’s Elvis women’s basketball’s Taylor Swift is now with him and Caitlyn Clark and and so people love the fever people are coming to town in droves to go see Fever games because every kid in America every girl in America loves Caitlyn Clark every girl who plays sports uh but it’s kind of it’s flipped on its head and it’s fascinating to me that it’s done that because I didn’t see it coming colts can they get back this is going to be interesting like they’ve kind of just sort of done what they do for a long time and and so they haven’t won an AFC South back to 2014 they haven’t finished last since 2011 they finished second or third for 10 straight years that’s incredible who Who would have thought wouldn’t it be nice if they they finished first or fourth for 10 straight years that’s kind of where the money’s at right if you’re finishing second or third in the AFC South year after year after year what you got you got a lot of mediocrity right first or fourth you got fans that are either cheering like hell or booing like hell and that’s kind of what you want what will the Pacers do to try to reenter the Indianapolis sports scene as a uh uh kind of that that team on a hill at the top of the hill that I’m not sure they’re on the hill right now the Indianapolis Colts hopefully they can get back there but yeah no AFC South championships since 2014 uh Indiana basketball no Big 10 titles since 2016 no Sweet 16s since 2016 fascinating cubs hammered the Cardinals last night 8 nothing ian Hap still raking three run or uh three RBI’s last night a home run tucker with another home run they can uh uh earn a split of this four game set in St louis with a win this afternoon that game at 2:15 Eastern time fever tonight against the Sparks sparks are 4-1 sparks have Kelsey Plum she’s their star uh Caitlyn Clark the last three games how about this for cold shooting one of 23 from beyond the ark she has averaged 12,4 and 10 over those last uh three games all on the road all on that West Coast swing let’s celebrate some band off the stage into the audience i said “Julie let’s go.” And so we went into they formed a circle they got John Tesh playing the keyboard as you can see you have a uh you have the bass player here you got another guy playing something here and I joined the circle they had a circle of like five guys and I’m in the middle of the circle clamping along what an idiot might have had just a little bit a few beverages that fortified my courage to join the public display of the John Tesh band i apologize for none of it it was fantastic i said “Julie take a picture.” And she did what a boob
