2 minutes ago Shams told us to watch out for the Pelicans and the Wizards we’ve got some breaking news the Pelicans are trading CJ Mcum Kelly Olinic and a future second round pick to the Washington Wizards for Jordan Pool Sidq Bay and the number 40 pick his sources tell ESPN what do we think guys well I’m crunching a little numbers right now i listen I think for Washington you get off Jordan Pool and Siddiq Bay had two years left on their contract they take on the expiring contracts of CJ MC and certainly Kick i look at it from the wizard’s perspective it frees up a ton of playing time for their young players they potentially could be a player in the summer of 2026 as far as where they go the goal for Washington is to retain that pick also that’s important so last year the Wizards were one of the worst teams in the history of the NBA through the first third twothirds of the season they sense have wanted to get grownup veterans in there they traded for Marcus Smart they traded for Chris Middleton now they traded for CJ MC they’re clearly wanting those veterans to mentor their young players and maybe not be the worst team in the league anymore i’m with you i think the underrated part uh for the Pelicans I know they get J pool but Sadq Bay that’s underrated right you watch around the league and we watch these NBA finals and again the most important position in the NBA is the wing position so you get a guy that could shoot his hard nose i believe Troy We had him down haven’t seen him in a year because he’s coming off that injury
so Troy Weaver was in Washington he took Joe Dumar’s top lieutenant role in New Orleans and immediately we have Washington players coming to New Orleans yeah interesting you know we were We have breaking news out of the NBA where the Wizards have acquired CJ Mcullum from the Pelicans that is per multiple reports the trade will also send Kelly Olyenck and a future second round pick to DC in return New Orleans will receive Jordan Pool Sad Bay and the number 40 overall pick in this year’s draft the trade will give Washington nearly $1 million in cap space in the 2026 season allowing them to make a big splash in free agency let’s welcome in our coach here Avery Johnson all right Avery uh we’re going to start getting these trades fast and furious what do you think about this one going down this has Joe Dumar’s name written all over it joe Dars is the new sheriff in town as uh president of basketball operations for the New Orleans Pelicans and he basically wants to resurrect this team and get this team uh and he’s starting by getting rid of some pieces that he probably believes underperform cj Mcum you know terrific score but very inconsistent uh not that great on the defensive end so you can you can see Joe Dumars because he really loves guards that can defend uh their position so this is this is Joe Dumars uh putting this imprint on this team trying to revamp this roster uh we’ll see what happens as it relates to Zan Williamson if they’re going to retain him or if they’re going to move him on but this is going to be the start of moves that Joe Doars is going to make to really try to uh position the Pelicans to be a playoff team ok so this is step one um obviously we have the draft tomorrow a lot of people excuse me I’ve talked about what they’re going to do cuz there’s a number of positions uh that they do need to fill what should the second step be for this Pelicans team if they do want to resurrect this team to get to the playoffs well the Pelicans um made a deal with the Indiana Pacers and they have Indiana’s first round pick uh late in the first round so that gives them two first round picks but I I think at the end of the day the Pelicans are going to really look for more shooting on the perimeter that if they’re going to retain Z Williamson he need space he needs space to operate they need quality depth you could can tell with Indiana and and also the the world champs OKC those teams are 9 10 11 deep so they going to look for quality depth with this move uh but again this is a situation where they want twoay players they just don’t want offensive players they they want players that can play both ends of the floor yeah of course though in Oklahoma City San Presti uh took a couple years to acquire basically every draft pick uh for the next decade or so avery Johnson we appreciate it we will talk to you actually very soon mhm cuuse we have the parade today in Oklahoma City so this is my first time seeing the pictures the images look at the buses in use this could have been one of the all time face pa moments what were you not aware that they uncovered the prapp buses the championship celebration buses before game 7 tipped off no I didn’t know that i on social media was making the round on social media had they lost this would have been disastrous but they got to use them today as the Thunder win 84 games this season only the 96 bows and 16 warriors won more games than that

despite game 7 being the most watched NBA game in six years the finals on the whole the least watched since 2007 you see a steady decline in viewership over the better part of the last decade from 20 million back in 2017 to 10 million this season viewership cut in half on average so with more on that we welcome in former NBA champion Avor Johnson and former Marlin’s World Series winning president David Samson david we’ll start with you on this because of your past in the business side of things on the bottom line of things in that front office how are you feeling about the ratings and that decline over the last several years if you’re in the NBA offices right now i am feeling great my tail is wagging like Snoopy because I’ve got TV deals that guarantee me billions of dollars over the course of 11 years and there’s not one clause in any of those deals that says you better have ratings increases it’s not relevant to the TV deals if I were in the last year of my deal without anything negotiated I may be a little nervous but in truth be told Chris ratings do not drive value or revenue yeah I totally agree if they were in the last year deal they would be in trouble right now but they sign that deal with under networks and I I think you know moving forward this may be the bottom of that deal because you’re going to have so many more networks involved with the new TV deal you know they’re bringing the guys over uh Barkley and those guys uh to have the whole new halftime show fans now I think as the summer goes on uh they’re going to have a greater sense of appreciation for a team like OKC and because of what happened to Tyr Hberg there’s a not a heavy chance that uh guarantee that Indiana is going to be back in the finals and if they’re not back in the finals that opens up doors for big market teams like the New York Nicks moving forward so I I agree with David this is uh this is all good news for the NBA cuz I can’t see their ratings going any anything less than what they received this year i think they’re going to have a little bit of a an increased bump next season avery would you say based on those numbers though that that fans are more interested in uh say a dynasty or a super team than they are watching a team like the Thunder with a bunch of uh young guys and not a real super superstar leading the way yeah I think fans do love the the storylines of the big three or you know when LeBron went to Miami with Wade and Bosh but at the same time I think fans are going to continue to get to know how special this thunder team is and as they continue to be great fans recognize greatness you know Jayen Williams you know he’s positioning himself to be you know the kind of the Scotty Pip to there Michael Jordan and SH Alexander so I I think as this story continues to over the summer and the new TV deals take hold uh in the fall I I think it’s going to drive more fans to to watch the NBA the reason why you want larger markets is because you have a better opportunity to get people watching finals games who don’t otherwise watch games and the question is for this series why was anyone going to watch who didn’t have a particular true interest in the NBA or in players who may not have huge national appeal when you look at your list Steph Curry LeBron James they basically you don’t have to like basketball you don’t have to know anything about basketball you don’t have to appreciate defense you just have to appreciate stars and the reality is that without stars it’s hard to get people to watch who don’t otherwise watch and that’s going to be the big difference and when you hear Adam Silver at the end of the playoffs giving away the trophy telling the fans “You just witnessed the next generation the new faces of the NBA what he’s saying
