with WSB in Atlanta welcome um basically back to Atlanta um what was your reaction uh when you you heard your name getting called um by the Hawks and and did you have a feeling you were coming to the Hawks or was this a surprise to you
no I definitely had a feeling it’s a team that I really wanted to go to um and you know just being a kid from Georgia you know it means a lot coming back to the city you know trying to be that hometown hero you know going to the University of Georgia and now going right up the road to the you know to the Hawks you know growing up as a Hawks fan having a Kyle Cor jersey you know it’s it’s a blessing we’ll go to Jamaa Johnson hey Asa congratulations welcome to the Hawks um I just wanted to ask you for those of us who may be unfamiliar with your game what do you think you can bring to the team and contribute to the team yeah you’re going to get a lot of contagious energy on the offensive side and the defensive side i’m a lead at rim running spacing the floor with my three-point shot and also being able to guard multiple positions i can take a smaller defender and po in the post and you know take a larger matchup off the dribble lauren Williams
hi Asa welcome to the Hawks um I’m curious what was that workout with the Hawks like um prior to the draft and sort of what were your meetings like being able to speak with uh people in the front office yeah I was really good i knew they were really excited about me you know going into the workouts and the meetings and you know the interviews i always had a good feeling about Atlanta and you know I really killed my workout um so it’s not really um you know a surprise to me because I know I put the work in surprise to me because I know I put the work in any other questions uh Lauren um Asa Lauren Williams again from the AJC i’m I’m curious about just what you’re looking forward to bringing to the Hawks especially working with Trey Young and you know some of the young core that they have here
yeah I really can’t wait to play with Trey he can you know hit the three-point shot but also throw lobs and he’s an elite point guard and you know I just can’t wait to be in a way
alison Asa when you talked about being a fan of the Hawks and having a Kyle Corver jersey just talk to me a little bit about that that fandom of when of Kyle and and what does it really mean to be a part of this team and and what is it really
yeah growing up you know Kyle was really my favorite player and the reason why I really wanted to start shooting threes just seeing him get hot um being able to knock four or five threes in a row um was just it was crazy to see and I just fell in love with that um growing growing up I went to you know like four or five games and you know just seeing the atmosphere and you know the fans and being able to play in State Farm Arena um one time this season with UG um you know I just always had a good feeling about it

2025 First Round Draft Pick Asa Newell (23rd Overall) spoke with the media via Zoom following the Atlanta Hawks selection on Wednesday, June 25.
The Atlanta Hawks acquired the draft rights of Asa Newell, the No. 23 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, from the New Orleans Pelicans, as well as a 2026 first-round draft pick (most favorable of New Orleans and Milwaukee), in exchange for Derik Queen, the No. 13 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
