Breaking: Pelicans Trade CJ McCollum To Washington | Jordan Poole to NOLA

welcome to In the in the [Music] [Applause] [Music] Welcome to In the No uh Schmidt here talking about the CJ McCullum trade the Pelicans have traded CJ McCullum and Kelly Olen to the Washington Wizards for Jordan Pool Sadique Bay and the 40th pick in this draft the Pelicans are also sending a future pick in this deal that I’m told is going to be heavily protected so we’ll see what year that pick ends up being but it’s probably one that’s not likely to convey the key thing to know about this deal is that the Pelicans can absorb Sadi Bay in the trade exception that they created for Yonas Valenunis a year ago in a sign-in trade with Washington there was a $9.9 million trade exception they generated at that time bay will slide into this trade exception because it expires on July 6th so they will be utilizing it to its fullest and now that will allow them to create another trade exception for the size of about $13.4 $4 million which is the Kelly Olinic salary amount so they will be going into this off season with the ability to use their mid-level exception or hold on to it uh the ability to use the trade exception that was generated by the Brandon Ingram trade which was around $12.1 million and now a trade exception that is $13.4 million this overall trade saves the Pelicans about $6.1 million under the luxury tax so they’re not going to be able to use all three of them they have a year basically to use them from once they’re created so the MLE will will last a year i think that one gets prrated out um the Brandon Ingram one they have until the trade deadline this new one that they will create will last another year till next July so they’ll have some tools in their in their uh belt to absorb some players for example if if Boston wants to get rid of Sam Hower he can now slot into one of those trade exceptions and he’d be a really good fit uh with the Pelicans so there’s a number of different directions that they can go there i like Sadi Bay uh he’s probably the most intriguing piece uh in this deal for me because he’s coming off an injury um I think he can be a rotation player he’s a replacement on the wing out off the bench that they haven’t had uh since Naji Marshall and if he can shoot well obviously he’s a a good fit there um Jordan Pool very similar player to CJ he finishes well at the rim uh maybe a little bit of an underrated playmaker he is been he’s been quite efficient as a as an individual player outside of his as uh outside of I think that first year in Washington last year he was around 59% true shooting he’s younger there’s two years left on that deal so I I would say like that deal you know it holds some upside it gives him some steady guard play and just goes in a different direction than CJ uh and now they have the 40th pick in the draft so they will have 723 and 40 maybe they package 40 and 23 to move up a couple slots uh if they’re really targeting a guy that they like uh unclear on how that’s going to unfold but I will be in Brooklyn to uh cover the draft i will be um at the draft interviewing the players and hopefully I can bring you some more information from the ground in Brooklyn as things are progressing so good trade i’ll have a write up on it uh soon we’ll see what the next moves are it seems like the Pelicans are likely going to target a big in some capacity either through one of their draft picks or through uh free agency or through trades one way or another don’t be surprised if there is a different starting center on the team coming up thanks for listening [Music]
