“There’s so much more to come ” for the Phoenix Suns
this is the extra point an arizona’s family originals podcast sponsored by your phoenix suns well the nba draft is in the books man it has been a whirlwind of a day it has been a whirlwind of a 26 months since the phoenix suns traded for kevin durant so let’s go out and phone some friends and get some rapper reaction let’s start with the man who told us kevin durant was coming to the valley and now kevin durant is out of the valley and they’ve got a whole new roster flex from jersey zooms in here and i guess uh the draft’s in the books man were you uh were you kind of glued to this thing wondering how they’re going to put back together the roster yeah man all over it um i i was pretty confident they were going to do some pretty cool things during this draft and there’s still a lot more work to do they’re far from done i’m gonna warn people and let them know this is this is just phase one of what’s going to be an exciting off seasonason so yeah man glue to it uh been i’m in south carolina i’m on the east coast and uh it’s been non-stop my phone has died on me literally about four times in the last couple days uh because of the traction man but really exciting but a lot to talk about
all right so let’s let’s take a look at kind of the personality of this roster built around book jaylen green how do you feel like first of all those two guys fit together when it comes to scoring i love it i love it right now listen i think people are a little uh more down than i am on jaylen green i actually love the kd deal um i think you get you get jaylen green and deon booker a dynamic back court devin booker’s in his prime jaylen green is 23 leading score in the houston rockets former number two overall pick and i keep telling people everybody who wants to push back on whether jayen green is a is an asset that’s depreciating or is not a good nba player at 23 uh my my first thing out my mouth to everyone has been tell me who’s the best player he’s ever played with and then somebody appalls and then they’ll think about it and they won’t have an answer because he hasn’t played with any good offensive players so uh i heard a lot of fred van dies and i’m like well that’s why he takes bad shots that’s why the stats don’t look great that’s why the splits don’t look great never had anybody better than him offensively so he’s got to create the offense and that that leads to a bad statistical and analytics but i i think the kid’s explosive he’s probably the second most explosive guard in the league in that category with john morant um and so i like the i like the combination i like the back court and uh there’s a lot more stuff they did so i’m i’m excited brother this this is looking promising
all right so do they it looks like they lead the league maybe in like three guards and big men fair to say after day two of the draft yeah right now as currently constructed and i’m going to warn people we this is this is going to be a long summer but yes tonight when we go to sleep we got a lot of very good two guards we got a lot of very good centers and i don’t think that’s what it’s going to look like down the road um we’ll see some shaking up but man um again devin book and jay and green look like a rock solid combo that will more pieces will fall into place to make this make more sense down the road and then what they did last night with the big man oh my gosh i mean i’m excited brother they got two they got some two really big boys that uh going to make a lot of people forget those that time that we didn’t have a center and and rim protection certainly was an issue last year do you see a scenario that brian gregory talked about where they’re playing they’re playing two bigs a lot how much have you seen that around the nba
absolutely we’re seeing it it’s evolving and and jonard you know coming from cleveland hanging around my guy uh kenny aerson from new jersey shout out new jersey gota got to do it new york new jersey guy right um yeah i mean he likes to play the bigs they had mobly they had jared allen right and we’re seeing more teams do it we saw minnesota do it we’re seeing more teams lean that way um i don’t know that uh malawatch and and williams will be playing much together um them two guys because they they i don’t know if that’s a a great combo in regards to some of the shooting and spacing um but i know those two guys are going to be on the phoenix suns they’re going to be back there anchoring the defense and there’ll be some other positional stuff at the four that will will complement both those guys so either way even if you play them together malawas can shoot so let let me just make that clear that that kid can shoot brother um so if you put williams in center and you move him in spurts as a really big forward um yeah man they got they got some weapons brother
and the two guys they drafted today obviously moving up and getting the kid out of st joe’s uh that that looks super athletic and looks looks super mature as well and then another shooter another shooter from kentucky that’s worked out pretty well here um can you grade the draft for us what sort of grade do you give the tr do you give the suns bro a+ and and i wish i can give extra credit because i i’m telling you listen uh kaman malawatch was easily a top five guy on my board he was by far the best center in the draft that guy goes top five no question unequivocally on in any other draft the suns got lucky because the people at the top of the draft didn’t need centers okay so so that’s just one of them lucky breaks you catch and then let’s talk about the kid uh uh rasher fleming man from st joe’s listen another jersey guy camden new jersey high school right i know a lot about him this is a dynamic guy that was in my top 20 on the board okay he he was a shorefire first round pick and they get this kid who is super dynamic um can can do so many things on the court i mean you if you like guys like herb jones and stuff like that you’re g you’re gonna love fleming so that’s an home run and then i always say this um there’s three schools uh that i don’t doubt when it comes to talent right i i i never doubt kentucky guards and that’s what you get in in kobe brer right and i never doubt villanova guys and i really high on marquette guys so uh those three schools are when they produce ball players they’re pretty darn good so you got another six seven guards from kentucky that can shoot the rock he can do some dynamic things he can pass the ball um man i’m telling you this is an a+ this is a home run this is the best draft the suns have had in a very long time i think this fan base should be really excited does this put them in position in your opinion to what matt ishbia laid out at this end of the year news conference to be competitive for a playoff spot next season
absolutely and i’m telling you uh mark you know i love you and my brother and i’m a straight shooter with you always man we’ve been doing this for a long time right going back to 2 am calls by kb okay you remember that heck
i’m telling you i’m telling you brother this
we we nailed it right because you you gave me the platform and you you kept you kept telling me uh come on and we kept talking about it and so we nailed it man um but i’m telling you to answer your question absolutely man i mean this team is going to be very good very scrappy and this is going to be a team that people are going to go to the arena and they gonna say “hey man we won tonight we lost.” whatever the outcome is man that was fun that was fun these guys ball they hooped this is a this is i think going to be a playoff team and again i’m going to i’m going to say this again right here on your show and i’ll come back in studio and we’ll talk about it more they are far from done bro they are far from done there’s so much more to come and when it all comes into place and it all falls into where it’s supposed to fall into you’re going to realize why i’m saying this is an absolute sheriff playoff team because uh what i what i believe to be coming is going to really put a stamp on all this stuff
and oh that’s a tease that’s a tease to have you sitting right next to me uh maybe in a week or two when you get back into town um when should we expect the chaos free agency like is it going to go into the summer is it going to go into september when when are we going to when we going to be able to uh make some real projections here um i i i would tell you this my phone has been ringing off the hook for the last two three days okay and i’ve heard all the scenarios i’ve heard all the options um the people i talk to i trust um these are the same people i’ve been talking to since way back when we were talking about chris paul right um so i i’m i will say this that is one of the toughest things to answer because they are so active and they are so busy that you could be hitting me up tomorrow and saying “hey brother did you land yet we got more to talk about.” like i’m telling you it’s moving that quick and that rapid and so if i had to make an educated guess i would say don’t rule out anything going forward but stay within the next two to four week range to be safe you say within the next two to four weeks round summer leave you should start to get some real ideas about the identity and that’s really pushing it based on what i’ve heard
