NBA Draft Reactions – Pick No. 18, The Washington Wizards Trade Walter Clayton Jr. To The Utah Jazz!

pick number 18 the Washington Wizards select Walter Clayton Jr out of Florida then promptly trade him to the Utah Jazz dion we’ve talked off air about this walter Clayton Jr is someone who I still believe in as an NBA prospect i know the archetype in terms of this undersized two guard it works against him but he was such a bucket getter who came in during clutch moments throughout his career especially this past year i always go back to that moment against Texas Tech in the Elite 8 we pulled the ball out shot a contested step back three to give the Gator the lead with just under a minute to go and a game they were down by as many as 10 spurred them to the national championship won the MP there but again it comes back to some of the athleticism concerns the size concerns uh I think he’s a better athlete than he gets credited for but it’s just it’s it’s all going to be a matter of can he fulfill this role as like microwave score backup point guard type uh and and emerge as like a really good sixth seventh man where are you at on Clayton and what he’s what
pretty out um pretty out his fit in Utah I I think is non-existent because fits don’t exist in Utah at the moment we’re just shooting for the fences right now if we’re Utah and I I don’t hate that by any means by the way like I think Utah’s in that position where you just hope for the best with everybody and Walter Clayton is a boomer guy i see a lot of people comparing him to Jamal Murray good luck that’s a that’s a really good basketball player who was also like a one and done too um in college uh but you know overall like I I see some vision in what he could be in the NBA he’s an incredible shooter
um not very athletic undersized two not the greatest ball handler for a one in my opinion not the greatest defender either and that’s putting it lightly um I think there’s a lot of uh negatives to his game in terms of like the the upside in my opinion but I you know I think if everything goes right you could get Andrew Nemhart out of him
mhm i’m going just fill the viewers in we re we recorded this video already and I completely botched Jaylen Hans’s name so now we’re re-recording it jaylen Hans was a little bit rough on my part like that’s probably like going a little too far raone Sessions
okay uhhuh
raone Sessions charlotte Bobcats legend of course who could forget
los Angeles Laker legend he had a phenomenal two and a half weeks for the Lakers when when he played i think Kobe was still on the team back then too um Raone Sessions could be what we’re getting out of Walter Clayton and that was kind of shortlived if we’re being completely honest but hey if everything goes great maybe Jamal Murray maybe Andrew Near
yeah I think Murray is still too that is too rich for me when you consider like the one and done pedigree murray was a reclass guy as well who was lights out when he was young for his his class when he was at Kentucky clayton was a late bloomer i mean he started out playing high school football that was where more of his pedigree was was a really high high-end safety recruit who had a ton of like big program offers like Florida Georgia Tennessee all wanted him loved Hoop got to respect it started out at Iona before moving up rather back to his home state that I guess is probably the cell that like maybe he could buck the trend for the undersized two guard or combo guards whatever you want to classify him as that he does have this work ethic he has been someone who has exceeded expectations every every step of the way but yeah I I even though I like Clayton Jr Nimhard feels like such a good archetype to stri uh to strive after but just knowing that like Nimhard turned himself into this I would say borderline lockdown defender this past season a legit defensive differencemaker that’s where I see like Clayton has a Clayton Jr i think has a ways to go to get to that and that’s not even that he was a bad defender at the college level like Florida was a top five defense nationally i think they were all pretty good positionally but yeah I just I don’t think uh I don’t really think Clayton profiles as like an impact defender unless some large strides are made on that end
yeah I couldn’t agree more i also I think what he did great was hit big shots right like you said he was clutch um you know I always make the joke I kind of watched the final four and I always say like from what I kind of saw he disappeared a lot i think the problem Walter Clay’s going to have is those big shots he hit he won’t have the ball in his hands at the NBA for that he has to figure out how to do everything he didn’t do in college to actually stay on the court right like he’s not going to be able to sleepwalk through the first half and then turn up in the second half because if he does that he just won’t get to play in the second half and I think that’s probably going to be the biggest adjustment is like where we saw him shine isn’t going to be where he plays at the next level actually
that’s a really good point yeah he’s not going to be asked to make clutch time plays nevertheless I think just the the three-point shooting I am a big believer in because you know everybody who’s on the court can create off the bounce which he can do so it’s not going to set him apart for people in the NBA level he’s also like a lead off the catch too and I think the shooting should translate immediately i believe in his ability to create his own offense and create separation and just be able to get his shots off that I I think will get him time and look you know you’ve been saying it in terms of Utah they’re they’re going to be in tank mode like he will get opportunities and their guard room as a whole is just very very mid from Keonte George to Colin Ston who I mean maybe he’s even on the move within by the end of the week uh like they just have a bunch of dart throws at guys who were somewhat talented that they hope stick usually in this range maybe Clayton’s the one that emerges from it maybe he’s never more than like a a low-end role player regardless got to give respect to the career got to give respect to his path
