🚨 Lonzo Ball TRADED to the Cavs + Bobby Marks’ Free Agency LOOKAHEAD | NBA on ESPN

all right a happy uh Saturday afternoon Greetings from Los Angeles We have uh rerouted from Brooklyn New York and we are in LA for um start a free agency that’s somewhat has already started already Um I would say a a tempered free agency period here So I figured we would do a video Uh we’ve got a great article out and it’s probably uh going to change over the next couple days Um but real first so I know people don’t want to hear this and it bores people but we had like train any of you watched the movie Trains Planes and Automobiles It’s a great movie in the 80s John Candy We had that situation yesterday and for me traveling out here to LA where traveling out of New York airport is a complete cluster You know what uh flight gets canceled at 8:00 p.m Get on a JetBlue flight I’ve got literally two hours sleep from doing TV and draft coverage Figured I want to take us sleep the whole way out here And sometime mid-flight somebody in for in uh on the plane lather themselves up in Ben Gay like you know that smell of Ben Gay and it was like smelling salt for me like midair Um and it was not pleasant So all right enough Let’s go back to the video So we have an article up on ESPN.com If any for everyone who’s followed me in the past nine years we do this big free agency primer and we it’s really a lot of detail stuff We decided to change it up a little bit this year where we we took a little bit of the primer and we took a little bit of the spending tiers article that we’ve done forever and we combined it together You can go on espn.com We’ve broke it up into all different tiers based on Brooklyn the cap space team um teams that could create cap space but at the cost of their own free agents when you look at Detroit and um Detroit and Memphis And it goes on and on and it’s it gives you an understanding of the apron rules as far as what teams can go out and spend It goes from I think we have six or seven tiers The final tier is the uh second apron teams There’s the biggest group of course is the tier 2 group which is like Atlanta and Charlotte Those in between teams um you know teams that potentially could have the non-tax mid-level exception like Golden State and Indiana is dependent on Jonathan Kaminga and Miles Turner So if you’re on ESPN.com it is a comprehensive article where as I said we break it down by tiers We have a nice little write up about 150 words on each team We look at um what each team has moneywise to go out and spend what players could be the what free agents could be the best fit um what other team needs and one move I would make for each team I’m sure there’ll be like highly like aggregation speculation about that It’s just we’re just kind of doing different examples as far as what we would uh what we would want to see There are some like we did cle in the Cleveland section We had to go back and adjust it Uh one of them was to sign Sam Merrill Um one of them was to sign Ty Drrome We took the Drrome section out um because the uh they made the trade with Chicago for Lonzo Ball We’re going to get into that in a minute Uh so I would highly recommend going into espn.com and reading that article because as I said we’re not going to do a video on every team but it really gives you an understanding as far as what uh what the market’s going to look like If your favorite team is the Philadelphia 76ers and this has come up a lot you um you can’t go out and sign Quinton Gerson Yabiscelli to the tax mid-level exception because that triggers the um the second uh the more than the $5.7 million tax mid-level exception because then it triggers the first apron and then you can sign Quinton Grimes But it explains everything in there I would recommend going out and um doing that uh couple let’s just go around bing bang bang as far as some of the transactions that’s happened um the last couple days and thank you everyone for the support we um we had a really good draft I thought um you know certainly the first round I thought the second round was awesome the uh the group we had out there Bob Meyers and myself and of course Malikica who’s our quarterback and and Wendy um who’s a character in himself and Jay Bilis we had a terrific time Thursday tonight Um it was as enjoyable um from a TV standpoint that we’ve uh that I’ve been a part of um in my eight or nine years at ESPN It was really it was like we did a podcast for three hours of just talking basketball and it was uh it was really terrific Um all right so we got some free agent signings and we’ve got a trade and we’re going to just go around the room So we’ve got Nasreed comes off the board He had a $15 million This happened Friday night This might have happened mid-flight during the uh the Ben Gay incident Uh he had a $15 million player option He declined and he signs for five for 125 It’s a rich contract because there is a part of you and I know you want to reward the player and he’s a really good player but there is that part of you and you’re thinking like well who are you bidding against right when it’s just Brooklyn on an island by themselves with cap space and yes there could have been maybe some signing trades but that takes the cooperation of uh of uh Minnesota Now it’s what happens with Julius Randall um who’s got a player option 30 millionish um by Sunday All player options have to be done by 5:00 PM on Sunday June 29th There’s a bunch of them in this pocket Uh so what happens with Julius i think if you’re Minnesota you would prefer for him to opt in I think the 30 number fits where you are I do think there’s a chance that you were going to lose Nquille Alexander Walker to free agency And that’s why when we did the Timberwolves video we said how important it was going to be for Terrence Shannon and Rob Dillingham for your younger players to u to take a big big step They are basically have uh the veteran minimum besides bringing back Julius Randall in uh in free agency They’re they’re basically um where are Minnesota let me pull up that thing They’re they’re over the first apron and their tax bill is their tax bill is not that bad because there’s a and if if you go on sports business classroom I really implore everyone and I know it’s a big document What I what I’m saying about like they’re catching a break with the luxury tax You can go in there and read it as far as why the tax bracket levels are getting lower If you’re between zero and 11 million over luxury tax they won’t pay as much of a penalty for prior years Um so that’s a little bit about Minnesota as far as where they are Um let me just pull it up here as far as what they have Sorry about that kids Minnesota 26 million They’re right at they’re right below the second apron as far as where they are So that’s a little bit about the Timberwolves there We had a trade which was um interesting um to say the least and we have Lonzo Ball going to Cleveland and we have Isaac Aoro going to Chicago The ball trade for the Cavaliers gives them immense protection in case they lose Ty Jerome to free agency and I think the likelihood is they are based on signing Sam Merrill to a four-year $ 38 million contract Um you know listen Lonzo and I know it’s the knee Um he ends the season last year with a broken um with a broken wrist Um Lonzo was really good in Chicago last year Like really good like defending if he has if he um if he’s healthy he will help uh Cleveland out immensely His contract is terrific It’s an NFL style contract He just signed that extension and because of that the trade doesn’t go down until July 6th It’s an NFL style contract where there’s what we call a prior injury exclusion which is an exhibit three based on protecting a certain part of your body which is the knee that if you miss a certain games the guaranteed amount basically becomes decreased and there’s a team option in the second year there is a no risk well let’s say minor risk move as far as going out and getting um getting Lonzo Ball and U with Isaokoro it basically what happens is you have to prioritize what your needs are and for Chicago they need front court depth they get rid of Alonzo the likelihood is you bring back Josh Giddy and Trey Jones I do think it is interesting and this I heard this a lot and I’m not going to give an opinion on this and I heard this last year when Caruso was dealt for Giddy and I heard this today from a lot of team executives like why didn’t they get that couldn’t they have gotten a pickback from Cleveland Lonzo going to um from to the Cavaliers probably the better player so that’s a discussion for my friends in the league to uh to figure out here we’ve got Sam Merrill going uh signing in Cleveland four for 38 remember although they are a second apron team you can resign your free agents you just have to be prepared to pay the cost They were already $12 million over the over the second apron So there wasn’t a period where they were like$2 million and then can they get back over you know what if you’re over you might as well blow right through it At least for this year projected luxury tax penalty of 145 million In all of Dan Gilbert’s years of owning the Cavs the most they’ve ever spent in tax penalties is 179 They have not paid the luxury tax since um LeBron’s last year I think that was 201718 They bring back Sam Merrell Certainly improves your bench as far as getting that shooter You get Lonzo and as I said the likelihood is that you probably are going to potentially lose Tai Jerome to free agency The Ty Jerome Nquille Alexander Walker show is going to be free agency here Um barring you know some trade activity which I think we’re going to see here we’re going to run chalk on a lot of guys You’re gonna LeBron opt in probably Randall opt in Um what some of these restricted guys were in a holding pattern Kaminga Cam Thomas Uh who else is out there miles Turner We’ll watch we’ll watch what happens in Milwaukee situation which will be interesting But you could have a listen Milwaukee at the end of the day could have the same roster that they ended the season with last year here And that’s why we’re going to be interested Denver how did they get their depth a lot of fascinating storylines Lakers and a center A lot of fascinating storylines We had DaVon Mitchell go back to Miami two for 24 Um they are right below the uh right below the first apron as far as where they are from a salary standpoint They’re over the luxury tax Um they do have some flexibility with that Duncan Robinson contract There’s $9.8 million becomes guaranteed if Robinson exercises his option which I would think he would do unless there’s a deal out there That makes sense Um and did I miss anyone yeah I mean that’s it for Saturday It’s It’s 12:00 Been stuck in this hotel room I need to go to Target because I’m running at a close Um so that is uh that’s what we’ve got We’ve got that article Go out and read it We’ve got a lot of content coming We’ll continue putting those slides Thank you to my 19-year-old son Jake for teaching me how to do Canva I do all this myself We don’t have a graphic arts person or uh this is all me We put everything on Canva We update things and it’s a we uh we appreciate everyone’s your support and we will talk soon [Music]

  2. Lakers could’ve given up Vando for Lonzo based on this trade. Tragic misstep by Rob not calling or is the lakers tax this real? Suns definitely gave up WAY less than Hornets wanted for Mark Williams.

  3. Strus for a center is next

    Garland/Ball/Porter
    Mitchell/Merrill
    Hunter/Tyson
    Mobley/Wade
    Allen/Portis ????

More Mobley at 4 and better length to protect the undersized Mitchland

  4. Bobby Marks reporting for ESPN get his 19 year old son is producing the graphics on Canva? We knew ESPN was struggling but they don't have a graphic design department?

  5. CHICAGO BULLS ARE 1 OF THE 3 WORST FRANCHISE IN NBA HISTORY. If it wasnt for the luck of Draft Jordan it would be clear. Aka The CHICAGO TRASH CANS

  6. 2 yrs too late on Okoro trade. Never liked him as a prospect pre draft. Turned out to be a Josh Okogie of sorts as a figured. Never draft an offensive liability player that high in a draft especially. They rarely ever pan out. Okogie, Tybulle, while both later picks, same archtype you stay away from. I personally would always only draft guys that can shoot. In my opinion it is an innate skill/trait. It cannot be learned you can improve it "some", but not enough to warrant you being a really good shooter. Use your draft assets elsewhere!!! Not a Cavs fan or Bulls fan either!
