the Grizzlies just fleeced the Portland Trailblazers of course moving up from 16 to 11 to select Cedric Coward hello everybody welcome back to Grizzlies Digest tristan Harland here with you live reaction here for the first round draft selection for the Memphis Grizzlies cedric Coward who I called i I said possibly was going to be the guy the Memphis Grizzlies selected out of Washington say also was going to be going to Duke in the fall had he stayed in college but his draft combine looked so good here we are talking about the 11th draft choice in the 2025 first round of the NBA draft now of course before we begin I want to remind everybody that 95.6% of you guys are not subscribed so if you enjoy what you see like what you hear want to keep talking about the Grizzlies with your the Grizzlies acquired the 16th pick when they traded Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic on Father’s Day for Contavius Cowwell Pope Cole Anthony a plethora of first picks and of course the 16th overall selection choice in the 2025 first round but the trade was announced prior to the selection from Sham said the Grizzlies are sending us the number 16 pick a 2028 first round pick via Orlando in two seconds to Portland for Cedric Coward of course originally he just tweeted the one on the bottom there i thought we had both the the 11th and the 16th i was kind of freaking out there for a second but evidently the Grizzlies ended up sending the 16th in the in the package for the 11th pick to move up to take Cow Hard now what does that mean for the Grizzlies now again last time I was here talking with you guys on Grizzlies Digest I was diving into some potential uh replacements for Desmond Bane through the NBA draft with the 16 pick a lot of fans on Twitter also known as X wanted the Grizzlies to trade the pick away to possibly work work on a trade with the Pelicans for Trey Murphy um wanted others wanted to call about Devin Booker but this is the best case scenario for Grizzlies fans and let me tell you why now again we talked about his draft combine results last video but this video I want to kind of go into what role this guy is going to be playing within the Grizzies now again he just got drafted so a lot of things could change he may even get traded be by the end of the night who knows but what this means to the Grizzlies right now is that they have found a missing piece now missing piece is a very loose term because we have not seen how his game translates to the NBA yet but a lot of fans and a lot of supporters for for him in college are calling him a kind of one forone replica of Kawhi Leonard again we have yet to see how his game translates to the NBA but it’ll be exciting nonetheless now where he starts his professional ball that’s yet to be seen whether he goes to the GLeague whether he plays in the summer league or whether he’s just right on the original roster from the get-go uh we’ve seen players get selected in the first round not play in the summer league like John Morant but if he does play in the summer league you’re looking at Jaden Wells Gigi Jackson my fantasy notification just went off i apologize uh but you’re looking at a potential great summer league team and again the Grizzlies won the summer league championship back number of years ago i believe it was uh around around two year 2016 17 maybe when Brandon Clark originally got drafted don’t fact check me cuz off the top of my head I can’t tell you i’m more I’m more kind of excited about this draft choice but leading up to this draft I mean there there was three or four different prospects that people were mo putting in mock drafts to the Memphis Grizzlies and nobody thought Coward was going to fall this far some people had him higher higher the top 10 some people had him as low as 23 but moving up to the number 11 draft choice and getting a getting rid of some of the uh draft capital that the Grizzlies had with the Orlando trade is probably for the best because the Grizzlies are in a win now situation of course the West is over competitive i mean the Mavericks just drafted Cooper Flag and Cooper Flag was a stud at Duke so who’s who’s to say his game doesn’t translate very well and they’re a threat in the Southwest division again the Spurs they’re also a threat because they’ve got an alien on the roster named Victor Webbyama uh the Rockets Kevin Durant just went there so the Grizzlies are kind of scrapping at the at the table bit right now because they’ve got to fight and they’ve got a claw and they’ve got a no pun intended but they’ve got to gr they’ve got to grind up to the top because the West is arguably the most competitive it’s been since Kobe Bryant was in the league and you’re looking at a team where they finished in the eight seed they didn’t the season didn’t end the way they wanted to john Morett gets hurt in the OKC series which allowed OKC to win okc goes on to win the championship by the way congratulations to Oklahoma City Thunder fans and all of my friends and family here at Digest Media that are on the Thunders Digest channel hope you guys celebrated and went to the parade and did all that but the biggest thing here is that you have a guy that you could possibly move to the three you could start Contavius Cwell Pope at the two or if Jane Wells is healthy you could have a super young rotation make KCP your six-man kcp possibly could have a sixman of the year caliber caliber season not only that but Coward he can learn from Contavius Cowwell Pope he can learn from Jaw he can learn from just the overall system that the Grizzlies have going right now and don’t forget they still have two more picks in the second round to select so who’s to say they don’t go out and fill fill some more holes in the offense or the defense that the Grizzlies have had this last season that a lot of fans have been talking about on Twitter on social media now possibly looking at the 56 selection I would love to have Norad Omir again I I rambled on this before but Dorchad Omir he’s a dynamic player not talked about as much coming out of Baylor but if you put him in the right system I think he’ll thrive very well for being a second round draft choice but overall Cedric Coward I mean I I can pull my sheet up right here that I that I jotted down from his draft combine i mean he shot 76.6% 6% off dribble 72% spot up and his three-pointer he was shooting over 60% there too and he was 90% from the charity stripe he has he’s 6’5 without shoes desmond Mains the same height 32 and a half standing vert ranked ninth with a max vert of 38 12 i mean this guy this guy possibly was the best prospect the Grizzlies could have taken at the 11th spot now again would it have been great to take Cooper Flag at one or trade a little bit more of your draft capital get to that one spot and possibly take uh Cooper Flag sure would it have been nice to try to getting higher in the draft draft uh selection order to take a bigger name prospect absolutely but what the Grizzlies did here are smart because they didn’t trade a lot of the draft capital away they didn’t trade another All-Star they didn’t trade another viable piece of the roster and they didn’t overpay for the 11th pick i mean yeah they get rid of a second round pick and some other capital but it’s not like they gave up that 2026 first round choice from the Suns that is going to be super valuable because of how how that’s going to end up working with Washington and Charlotte and all that so overall Grizzlies fans should be happy they should love this pick they should love what the Grizzlies did here because hey it’s 9:00 right now the draft’s still going on possibly move back into the first round highly unlikely but by the time this video goes up
