Johni Broome selected No. 35 overall by Sixers | 2025 NBA Draft Grades & Instant Reaction
back here on CBS Sports HQ on the clock presented by Jeep and Janai Broom didn’t have to wait too long to hear his name called he goes 35th overall to the Philadelphia 76ers SEC player of the year he was in the running for national player of the year that of course went to Cooper Flag who went number one overall this is the landing spot where a lot of people thought that Janai Broom would go your grade for this the 76ers and Janai Broom uh You know it’s a B+ i mean it’s all right yeah he’s got a chance to make the team i’m happy for Janai Broom because coming out of Morehead State went to Auburn had an amazing college career exceeded all the expectations and now he’s got a chance to do the same thing in the NBA we talked about this in the opener he’s not your traditional NBA caliber athlete he doesn’t have the mobility of an NBA caliber big man what he’s done at Auburn is def uh expand his skill set to the point where he can play in NBA actions he can play out of dribble handoffs he can play out of short rolls those were things he couldn’t do a couple years ago even when he was putting up monster double doubles so his game translates better offensively in the NBA now than it did can he defend an NBA center can he defend an NBA pick and roll uh can he provide rim protection at the NBA level those are questions that we’re going to have to answer but in Philadelphia where you need some depth and you need some big bodies because you never know what Embiid status is this is worth the risk in the second round
but aren’t you concerned about his injury history as well and you already have injury history here in Philadelphia
yeah I mean he’s had some of that stuff but it always cuts both ways zack Edy had no injuries at Purdue in four years of college
yeah good point and is now going to have to miss the start of the upcoming season because he’s had multiple injuries with his ankles since becoming a member of the Memphis Grizzlies i’m less concerned about that than I am just like how does he stay on the floor in the NBA incredible college player incredible story let’s just keep this very simple before we nitpick it to death when you start your college career at Morhead State and then you’re the 35th pick in an NBA draft that is amazing he should be very proud of this accomplishment but now we start talking about where does it go from here and I don’t doubt that he can operate within the confines of an NBA offense he does know how to play uh on the defensive end I’m my concerns would be who does he guard and what happens when he gets switched on to to smaller players because he doesn’t move well he doesn’t jump much he’s a great college player but a flawed NBA prospect not every franchise would take him in the top 35 but for a place like Philadelphia I kind of understand it they are not using this pick to try to identify somebody they can get in at 19 years old develop and see where they’re at in 2028 they’re trying to push for it next season in theory in a perfect world healthy Joe Embiid healthy Paul George healthy Tyrese Maxi that roster is good enough to win the Eastern Conference and what they’re hoping is that Janai Broom regardless of how high his ceiling is or isn’t they’re hoping he can be a part of helping them do that next season
would you be willing to say that this could be could be a steal for Philadelphia considering his ceiling um anything could be on draft now let me I’ll say that it could be sure i think that’s unlikely um I think he could be a long-term NBA player uh if he is willing to grind it out and be that rugged backup candidly maybe third string big i will also say this I would have taken Maxim right on
that’s what I was going to ask you next because he’s on the board a big guy and you skip him for Jani Broom so you have footer who can shoot from three so he could back up Embiid or he could also theoretically play next to him the other point I’ll make here too is Andre Drummond is in the last year of his contract he’s the backup center there’s been speculation that maybe they’re trying to move off his contract if they do that now Janai Broom is your backup behind Joel Embiid who’s not reliable i would have taken Reynold and that’s a completely fair point i would have taken Reol as well um but on the night of the draft everybody has strong opinions and I’m always open-minded enough to try to let these things play out before I speak in absolutes once upon a time if I’d have been sitting in a studio and I might have actually the during the night of the draft that TJ McConnell could have been picked in
I would have told you if you brought up TJ McConnell for any reason well that’s not an NBA player and I could have broken it down and sounded really smart and then I just watched him in game seven have a a franchise in position to maybe try to steal an NBA title on the road so the TJ McConnell lesson is a lesson for all of us sometimes people don’t look like they can play in this league yeah perform in this league and they end up sticking around for 10 years perhaps that’s the Jai Broom story but back to Reno to me that would be the better fit because he at least projects more of a modern NBA player than Janai Broom does at this point in their careers

the dude in the middle is a RETARD lol
๐ญ๐ญ
We just drafted Jahlil Okafor ๐คฆ๐พโโ๏ธ๐คฆ๐พโโ๏ธ๐คฆ๐พโโ๏ธ
I like the pick. Not very athletic but I like what he brings !
Derik Queen was a lottery pick why not
This was a wasted pick. This dude will get hunted on pick and rolls. He can't shoot and will dominated on the court. Jokic can't jump either but he not even 1% of jokic skilled. Passing and maybe rebounding. But rebound are not promise because of the better competition. And tou have Raynaud sitting there.
Good pick by the 76ers in the second round. I am am Emboid fan ans just understand the teams need to build depth. Embiid had seasons rebooted like the best center since O Neal and Ewing ro come in tye league. If he can't run it back, yiu have Drummond ans Joyni that can spell 48 minutes a night at the center position.
I can't stand this notion that people can't get hurt or injured. It's a sport. There's always risk for injury, no matter who it is.
Dude just won SEC Player of Year, and SEC Defensive Player of Year in the NBA toughest conference and you talking about Maxime Raynaud who played in 5th worse conference and cant even defend? Is this a joke?
Raynaud donโt even play like a C and has same wingspan as Broome.
Broome dominated Duke and Michigan who both have a NBA starting front court.
I donโt even watch college ball like that but that guy was talking so negatively about someone who just achieved a life goal. Whoever that dude is should talk about the player drafted instead of thinking they are a gm. Buddy should stay in his lane and respect the game and players
The hawks need him he need go to team wit shooter so can jus grab an dunk rebounds
Play embiid at stretch 4 with Broome low post
Drafted 2 prospects that play great defense and have big offensive upside. If JB was 19 he would have been a 1st rounder in my opinion. He is mature, high basketball IQ, a proven leader and had to work extremely hard after HS with playing D2 before going to Auburn and getting a chance to level up. I love that pick at 35 and I think he helps day 1! VJ is gonna be a NBA stud one day, he knows what it takes to start from nothing and have to work super hard to get to this point. He has the drive, determination, and seems to me the kind of person that will give this team and city everything he's got every time he's on the floor or practicing to improve his game. He is a humble dude that will not take this opportunity for granted, he is not selfish and will do anything it takes to help his team. He will be a relentless defender and will fit nicely next to Maxey and TM will go off offensively because of it, he will not have to worry about opposing players getting behind him going the other way, which seemed to be a issue last season and in turn he wasn't as aggressive offensively. I love this draft and I think both players will be a huge upgrade a for this squad now and in the future and help reduce Embiid and PG min to hopefully help keep them healthy throughout the season. VJ can play the 2 or 3 because of his wingspan and length especially on defense and will be a problem with his speed and athleticism combined with TM lighting speed, they can possibly be a problem for opposing guards and sf with that alone. Just my opinion, but what do I know, I'm not exactly Quasimoto ๐ค
Healthy Geriatrics for the Sixers that have a chance to ein the East. Please!! These geriatrics dont make a full season without injuries.
WE, CAN USE HIS REBOUNDING, YOU HATERS ๐๐๐๐คฃ๐๐ฉ๐ซธ๐พ๐๐พ๐ก๐ค๐คฎ
Look this isnt personal, honestly no decent person wants to see someone failed, but its just my opinion that there better options available. As a fan of the 76ers i hope to be proven wrong. People stop comparing what he did in college versus the nba. Some people are just better college players. It does not always translate. Example Adam Morrison … Football Example Tim Tebow. Sometimes you are just better in college, just like some people make better pros than college players. I thi k most Philly fans would love for him to become the second coming of Jokic. Thats definitely the guy he should model.him game after. Work on that jumpshot.
Wish these NBA analysts did their homework and were aware of Adem Bona before criticizing depth at the 4 and 5.
JHONI BROOME GONNA BE BETTER THAN MOST OF THE PLAYERS DRAFTED IN THE 1ST RD .. AND .. HE WAS THE BEST PLAYER IN CBB ๐ LAST SEASON .. HE JUST DIDN'T FIT THE NARRATIVE ..
We shouldโve drafted Maxime Raynaud how you past on that ๐ฏ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐คฆ๐พโโ๏ธ
A+ put some respect on Johni Broome's name
Bad pick
I'm thinking this is just bullying because of his hairline
Drummond is done embied i love to death but with the knee injury i think he's done he probably will be good for 35 or 40 games a season
