Would you ever consider it uh like I’m not really passionate about that Like I’ve never been like I’ve never wanted to jump even to the WNBA Like I I there’s something about college basketball like being able to be a dream merchant for young people There’s something about that that that’s you know that’s that that stays with me Like I’m I’m really not done with it yet If I was done with it and I was searching for something else but I I’m going to give you a story too Like I did interview for the Portland Trailblazers job like it was a full-blown interview and I took notes because I I wanted if if there’s another female that wanted to to go that route like I got the notes I got what they asked I got I do I I I I recorded it Seriously I did
So you was the fans you was the ops Okay Um you know but a lot of it was analytics Like they they’re big into that And then a lot of it was they asked me questions like you know how would I handle a superstar it’s like I mean I I got superstars on my team now Like I treat them like people Like I really I there’s a relationship Instead of joining the NBA Staley signed a seven-year extension with South Carolina in 2021 worth around three million per year And now she’s in her 16th season and is the highest paid coach in women’s college basketball and has built the Gamecooxs into a national powerhouse of South Carolina Don Staley said “I built this program in South Carolina and I don’t want to hand it off to someone who wouldn’t white glove it.” She’s not ruling out the NBA entirely folks But she’s made her stance firm If you’re going to come for me you got to come correct She said “My passion is here Would I consider it i don’t know It would have to be the right situation.” Steely has had plenty of opportunities to join WNBA franchises as a head coach Several WNBA teams including Chicago and rumored Philadelphia expansion teams have been linked to Staley over the years Yet she’s repeatedly turned those opportunities down Staley has publicly stated she’d like to help own a WNBA franchise particularly in Philadelphia her hometown If there was a team in Philly would you ever consider coaching it
