The Spurs RARELY DRAFT BIGS Anymore!
spurs fans I’ve been doing a lot of research and even I was shocked with a lot of the stats I’m about to show you what is up San Antonio Spurs fans hope you’re having a great weekend there have been seven NBA drafts since this channel’s inception on April 5th 2019 with the Spurs passing on Zack Ed last year and not even trying to draft a big like Maxim Reno or Ryan Caulk Brener in the second round this year it really got me thinking are Spurs have really become allergic to drafting bigs did the research online some sites say the average NBA height is 6’6 some sites say 6’7 we’re just going to use an average for this video of 6′ 6 and 1/2 all the Spurs draft heights I’m about to show you are from the NBA combine when available we’re just about to see how our Spurs are drafting guys below the league average start us off with 2019 the Spurs drafted Lucas Smadage to sandwich himself 6’9 and a half so we’re starting off with a player above the league average next up Kell Johnson i was shocked to see this his NBA combine height is listed as 6’4 and 3/4 i thought for sure Kelman was 6’6 must be a shoe thing again unfortunately this Johnson is not as long as we thought it was and last but not least and if you’ve been here long enough you’ll recognize this nickname Garbage Time Q Quindary Weatherspoon 6’3 so two out of the three players below league average height but it’s just one draft right surely we start drafting some bigs moving forward TSR right no well in 2020 we drafted Devel who was 6’5 and Trey Jones whose combine height from what I found said 6’2 and a half i thought for sure Trey was like 6’1 if that’s wrong please let me know however you slice it both players under the league average okay surely we’re going to draft some bigs moving forward right this is probably the worst Spurs draft in team’s history at least the worst draft in the channel’s history in 2021 the Spurs drafted Joshua Primo who’s 6’4 and Joe Mama himself Joe Whiscamp 6’5 and 3/4ers continuing a streak of drafting players under the league average 2022 a curse is broken we took Jeremy Sohan who I could not find combine stats i don’t believe he attended the combine but most sites are listing him as 6’8 some 69 some of you have said he’s 6’7 just going to go with 6’8 for this video he’s above the average however you slice it malachi Brandom under 6’4 blake Wesley even shorter 6’3 up next we finally crushed the league average and there’s no way the Spurs were not drafting the unicorn the alien himself Victor Wemanyama 7 foot three and a half per the Spurs couldn’t find any combine stats but the Spurs around draft time reported that was his height of course he is not that height anymore spurs fans he’s easily seven foot six maybe seven foot seven please stop growing WBY and then another shocker for me City Soko i could have sworn he was 6’7 no combine 6’5 and a half another one of those i must have seen his in shoes height not his actual standing barefoot height all right last year rookie of the year current reigning rookie of the year Stefon Castle 6’5 and a half i thought he was 6’6 he’s just under 66 juan Nunes 6’4 and another one that surprised me Harrison Ingram i thought he was 6’7 he’s actually shorter than Castle per the combine stats I thought i have found 6’5 and a quarter what and then this year’s draft Dylan Harper 6’4 and a half which we thought he was 6’6 came in a little under that and then Carter Bryant who actually meets our league average in this video of 6’6 and a half and I’m not knocking this draft in any way i’ll circle back to this but if you take the 17 players that I just talked about all 17 guys 13 out of the 17 are below the average height we’re using this video 6’6 and a half 13 below the average height one Carter Bryant was the average height and then two were above the average height lucas Sonich three three bad math there three were above the average height lucas Somich Jeremy Sohan and of course WBY nine of the players I just talked about were six five or less guys we’re drafting Yodi size players no offense Yodi you know having guys that are shorter than the average NBA height might explain why we struggle in defensive rebounding at times i dug into the defensive rebound stats and we’re going to dig into those right now together there’s six here because well this year’s draft that season hasn’t happened yet but since 2019 our Spurs have ranked it’s not as bad as I thought it was but it is bad in areas our defensive rebounding the last six years 13th 16th 13th 23rd that was the Kelvin Johnson le year then we jumped up did a much better job in 2023 Wby’s rookie year and then fell off a cliff last year webby missed time sewing miss time rookie coach there’s lots of issues back in the 20s at 21st and to give you some perspective our NBA finals teams our six finals teams their defensive rebounding rank in the NBA for the year first six 11 four four four hey defensive rebounds stop your opponent from getting second chance opportunities which means you’re limiting their scoring and the whole point of the game is to score more than your opponent listen guys I’m not saying draft a big just because they’re big but if you look at our team and if you look at this year’s draft drafting players like Dylan Harper Carter Bright which I am happy with those selections but where it kind of makes you step back and look at the team is we keep drafting similar size players at similar positions you start getting a ton of overlap this is why you heard the fit thing a lot with the Spurs with Dylan Harper even with Carter Bryant we have a lot of guys that’ll play at the two and three the wing position and looking at this thumbnail I think in a year maybe up to two years three maybe four out of the players in this thumbnail will be gone naka Brandon might be gone before the season starts i think he’s worn out his welcome in San Antonio blake Wesley he’s fast he brings some defense i think the Spurs might keep him around and then there’s Kell Johnson and Deacell you guys know I like Kelman i don’t know if he’s going to be here longterm with the Spurs great locker room guy great community guy does whatever the Spurs ask went from being the guy in the season before We WBY to what the third option in Webmy’s rookie year to then going to on the bench that’s a that’s a huge drop to being the number one option to three to six and I haven’t heard boo about him complaining about it deacell’s another huge question mark he’s got a contract that right now at this moment in time he has underperformed for Harper Bryant Castle where is he fitting with all these guys i think he can be on as well soon maybe even before the season starts the Spurs desp desperately need size on the team when you look at the roster we’ve got Webby we’ve got our unicorn but we don’t want him bagging all these other bigs in the league all the time a bad choice of words right charles Barkley bumping into uh other big players we’ve also got possibly Bismac Bambbo he comes back sandra Mama Kelli who isn’t a traditional big and then Charles Bassie who unfortunately cannot stay healthy i see Bassie not coming back byambo probably not something needs to happen with either free agency or a trade or both if we have the cap room you guys have talked about maybe we can bring on a Yabuelli and a Lopez on the short term yavelli maybe three years to play the four a big four at least a heavy four and then Lopez maybe a year or two to be a backup five not a starter I I don’t think he should be starting but a backup five whatever the Spurs do if we’re not if we’re not going to draft bigs then we need to sign or trade for some this offseason because this just isn’t going to work out we can’t have Wem be the only big running around out there again i don’t want to see that i know a lot of you don’t want to see that yeah that’s all I got drop a comment guys you think this this is something that’s clearly this is something very different than what I normally do which I’m trying to do something you know a little more original content than just piggybacking off other websites and this is really something I hadn’t thought about we talk about you know we make the jokes together on the channel that we draft a lot of guys that are 6’5ish and now I’ve given you the proof since 2019 we’ve drafted more than half the guys are 6’5 or less drop a comment your thought on all this really looking towards some feedback do you want to see more videos like this in the future more original type stuff if you do hey hit the thumbs up that’ll let me know you liked it all right that’s all I got subscribe and thank you and as always go spurs go and stay
I dug into the San Antonio Spurs last 7 NBA Drafts. Quite shocked on the players heights!

Well dang it I got Tre's height wrong. Stupid measuring with shoes! Hope you enjoyed something different from TSR. Thanks for watching!
My point exactly. I've been complaining about this forever
it shows that our coaching staff is weak asf, and it is
Thank goodness for Keldon in 2019
yeah i dont wanna see wemby have to play extra minutes because he needs to just to keep us in the game, i noticed last season he had little rest and was straight back on the floor because our other "bigs" were just getting dominated by everyone on the other team!
Just my thoughts, I believe we continue to draft guards is cause the coaches know current players’ ceiling is only so high. Absolutely we need bigs, so that teams like Memphis, New York, Toronto don’t manhandle us. It’s not even their ability, it’s their physicality that wins the game.
As I said to you many time it's even crazier when you take into account they also draft the same wingspan over and over for their FRP: 6'9" to 6'10"… excluding Wemby (8'), Sochan and C.Bryant (6'11")
Frustrates the living heck out of me. For real
What??? They drafted Wemby.
You didn’t bring up Kai Sotto, not ONCE!!
I’m very proud of you, man. 🫡
The San Antonio 6.5 group, Lol Malaki and Blake are really guards not forwards, but being in the paint for rebounding is under sized.
To be very precise in 2024-2025 the NBA player height average was (without shoes) 6’6.17” exactly. the tallest team being Lakers at 6'7.68" and the smallest being Knicks at 6'4.31".
Without any surprise, the Spurs were near the end (and it's with Wemby and Zach Collins on the roster) at 6'5.73"…
Those measurements were made at the beginning of the season, so, of course it don't take into account a trade Luka<->AD (or Zach Collins + Tre Jones <-> Fox + Jordan McLaughlin) for example.
The League is all about the analytics. It's all about jacking up more threes, more possessions and the old adage, threes are worth more than twos. Everyone wants the 3 and D guy who can shoot and play defense but the problem is it's impossible to get into defensive sets because of the speed of the game and how quickly shots are going up. Brian Wright is a just a follower and following the formula of every team.
We have the most unique talent ever in Wemby and our Spurs had the chance to begin surrounding him with at least 6'8" to seven foot big wing talent who can shoot, rebound and rim protect and forge a team of big positionless players. I would love our Spurs to go against the grain and organically form a team of big postionless players but that's not in the cards and we might be wasting the most unique talent to ever play in the NBA in Wemby with the small ball formula. GO, SPURS, GO!!!!
Now look at the average minutes played against the league average. That might be a good indicator of a team’s ability to draft players. A lot of these players do t even play
Besides Harper, I think Khaman Maluach was the actual target and possibly the player they was really trying to trade up for and not Carter Bryant like Brian Wright said in the presser. We will probably never know though. Its always we got the player we wanted the whole time. Still extremely happy about getting Bryant btw.
Mr. Wrong has to come to realization that the spurs can't fleece every team and come on top on every trade. Sometimes you might have to sacrifice a little to get what the spurs need.
Sorry but i don't want a zach edey type of player in my team
Brian Wright lucked into Wemby Castle, Harper. This goes to show he can’t draft good when the picks aren’t high lottery picks
Victor not a big
It is mostly historical player heights being overreported/measured in shoes. That is why draft combine barefoot measurements suddenly make players seem short. On average I count all players reported height to be 1.5inch higher than their true barefoot height. I remember back in the day when Toni Kukoc who was always 207cm in Europe came to Bulls and was suddenly 6'11'' (211cm) in NBA.
Tsr when you get a chance there are some clips of Wemby on Kevin Harts cold plunge show and DANG! He absolutely jacked! His arms are starting to look like the admiral!
Brian Wrong needs to make up for blowing the Second Round pick. He screwed up BIG TIME trading their one SRP to the Pacers BEFORE KNOWING WHO DROPPED DOWN TO PICK 38? Spurs could have had Harper, Bryant and Raynaud on rookie contracts, and Wemby, Castle STILL on rookie contracts. Think about it…you'll get it. I did.
our whole team is severly undersized. Not a single player over 6'6
Those measurements are totally wrong . Everyone and their GMA knows that wemby didn’t come in at 7 ft 3
