well let’s talk NBA draft we’ll talk a little bit about the top players on the board a bunch of them fell the way I thought they would and then there were some surprises and then there were some weird questions that were asked uh Dallas obviously everything has changed with the Mavericks in the aftermath of the Luca Donsk trade the injury to Anthony Davis the catastrophic injury to Kyrie Irving and then all of a sudden the Mavericks get the number one pick on the lottery and they get Cooper flag and there has been boom just tremendous outpouring of support for the Dallas Mavericks so it looks as if they’re about to embark on a new era san Antonio which has been building with good players gets two more really good young players in the draft they wind up getting Dylan Harper with the second pick he of course is a a scoring guard he comes from Rutgers later in the first round they got a really good defensive forward by the name of Carter Bryant from the University of Arizona they are just stockpiling assets like you wouldn’t believe in San Antonio third pick in the draft as I projected VJ Edge i think he’s got great upside oh no did we lose you Lee lee are you there i think we lost him in this St lawrence Seaway lee are you still with us well friends um I don’t know if you’re following the live stream but it looks like uh Lee Hacksaw Hamilton is uh little sketchy internet there way up in upstate New York so I’m not sure if we’re gonna be able to pull off this live stream today let’s give Lee a moment maybe he’s gonna swing back we are back we were talking about first round of the draft we’re moving pick Conppel three-point shooter from Duke got so many good young players there he g a dimension that have not had the fifth pick was the first surprise pick why did you do the pick utah Jazz picked up Ace Bailey the other scoring guard from Ruckers he did not work out did not visit with any teams he was trying to project where he to go and it was not Salt Lake City i got to believe that we’ve not heard the end story there’s going to be happening I think with Ace Bailey aka I don’t play for you but Utah said “We’re taking the player you’re our player you’re going to play here.” This is going to be very intriguing to At the end of the day this guy can be a player because he’s got skill or he could be a bust because he’s so gross immature so that was Utah at number five washington at number six really good guard from Texas Trey Johnson new Orleans at seven really good point guard from Oklahoma and Jeremiah Fears and then another strange pick if we thought Utah was weird then what Brooklyn did at eight with their first pick was really off the radar they took Eorman he’s a Russian player who played half a season at BYU he’s really raw has hardly played at all and why would you reach that high that early for a guy that was an unproven commodity Toronto at nine took a really good defensive guard i think that Colon Boils is going to play very good at South Carolina and then the Phoenix Suns by virtue of that trade they made Houston they go out and they get Kaman Maluatch the big center from Duke shot blocker very good pick portland at number 11 took a really strange pick cedric he played a few games at Washington State had been with three different had injury chicago took the German guard many people was going to be a really player noah Sange atlanta at 13 and again the Hawks have been very active in the trade market they get Queen the only the only question about the big kid out of Maryland he’s 69 widebody can Can he hold up as a real post guy in the NBA he went 13 to Atlanta we talked about Carter going to San Antonio at 14 and then another strange pick cuz this doesn’t fit what they do oklahoma City at number took Thomas 7 foot center from Georgetown University he’s big he’s a plotter he’s not a guy that runs the floor and what does OKC say do they championship running the floor later in the first round I’ll just throw some other marking names at you i really liked Washington Wizards got Walter Clayton i think this this guy is a player oklahoma City got Nick Cle uh kid from Colorado State uh Orlando which had already made one big trade they got Jace Richardson from Michigan State brooklyn at the end of the first round took Michigan’s man and Wolf and then Charlotte by virtue of got Liam Milly uh he of course is an outstanding freshman from Yukon so there there were some real surprises some real are you picking that player question san Antonio really themselves a great deal so John that’s that’s kind of a thumbnail sketch of what happened the draft board it it it was a wild first night no doubt there’s there a couple good big men some teams very well others I didn’t think did very well at all you sat there you watched it reaction
well well first of all Lee loving your analysis but for me you’re breaking up on the live stream so if you’re watching for those of you that are watching if you can just drop us a a little something in the live chat to tell me how you’re hearing and seeing the live stream just to make sure it’s working okay but I’ll tell you what I I watched the whole thing and uh it’s great seeing these young men up there this is a big moment in their life you know Ace Bailey seems like a character he seems like like a guy that’s going to be interesting to watch um you know it’s some of these guys were young it just was a very freshman dominated kind of a draft wasn’t it Lee it really was and again all drafts have really become young one and done type guys that plus the infiltration of you know more and more players from from Europe but there there’s no doubt that people got some really good talent there boy there you have as many picks as we had in the 15 i just I just don’t understand that and this a daily thing like I say boomer bust i don’t think we’ve heard the end of the story about him not wanting to go to Salt Lake City so we got that second top NBA John
yeah we were talking a little bit about some of these trades and the the trades were just wild they just seem to be happening all the time it’s hard to keep track of them all well let’s just kind of look real quickly here i guess that’s great line you got there trades are just salary bumps uh the Houston Rockets obviously made the blockbuster Kevin Durant trade that changed the whole chemistry of the Phoenix Suns by letting them get uh Jaylen Green Dylan Brookke etc uh Boston those were salary cap driven deals the Celtics trading Chris Zingis winds up going to Atlanta atlanta winds up getting Terrence man uh I should say Brooklyn winds up getting Terrence man and then proven deal olen went to the Washington Wizards Pool he winds up going to the Republicans and then after the first round was completed at 11:00 at night Suns made another trade phoenix traded two number one picks get Mark Williams mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets that was the big man the Lakers tried to get at the trade deadline and could not get because he failed his physical now he winds up in the division anyhow he goes to the Phoenix Sun so I mean you look look at what the Suns Green Dylan Brooks plus Mark Williams plus the center from D is probably had the best 24 hours of any any team in the NBA but those those were the trades some of that were obviously driven because of the salary cap most notably in Boston yeah just uh if I can for the fans listening and watching Lee you’re breaking up on me and I’m not sure if everyone else on the live stream is hearing Lee or seeing Lee correctly so if you could just drop a note in the live chat on YouTube on X um or on Facebook and we’ll see it here and you guys can let me know what you’re hearing um but um I’ll tell you what the the trade like I said the trades were confusing you’d see a guy he get picked up by a team and you’re kind of getting locked in and then suddenly there’s there’s a trade pending or something like that it was just really hard to keep track of yeah it really was some of these trades cames out of field normally you find out you know you hear fine this being shot this transaction’s about to come down and some of the stuff just came out of the clear blue sky i don’t know any that knew this Mark Williams trip was going to happen in Phoenix and you know Boston was obviously shop Porzingis and shopping Drew Holiday wound up going to different destination we thought they would and there still may more trade now the round of the NBA draft is underway so John we go from the draft to the trades let’s talk about teams here in Southern California yeah let’s do that and and by the way we are getting some updates from some of our uh followers online and it is a little fuzzy and choppy for you there Lee right there on the St l Seaway well we apologize it’s the first time in years we’ve had technical problems we’ll try to just grind through this talk about help wanted Los Angeles another good headline there uh you know the I’ll give you the positives and the negatives with the Lakers uh report is that Luca Donsik is gone into this off season for the last month like a man possess uh he’s doing unbelievable cardiac work doing a whole new nutritional offseason program i’ve been told he’s lost 15 to 17 pounds already they have to put him on a weight training program which will strengthen him in the upper body so obviously the message finally gotten to Lick you have great skill but need to take better care of yourself this kind of fascinating i the next time we’ll see Luca Donk he may look like a very transformed very different guy uh Lakers are they’re trying hard to make a deal to get a a guy to protect the rim and I like Walter Kesler i don’t know that he’s a perfect fit because he’s more of a a big guy who blocks and score get some rebounds but don’t run the floor at all he slows your offense down what they’re talking there today trade worms surfaced that the Lakers have offered ruin Hamora to the Miami Heat for Andrew Wiggins i don’t understand that hatchima has had flashes where you say “Boy is he a contributor he plays really well.” Wiggins is a scorer and a defender but he’s been more of an in-n-out guy over the course of his career there also the Lakers were attempting to trade up into the second round they’re trying to go from 55 to maybe 45 for the Chicago Bulls pick and the other Labor story that just broke before the second round began rejected a year million deal he’s out the final year of his contract then be eligible as an unrestricted for a max fiveyear contract a lot more money he’s not turning the contract down because he wants out he’s turning the contract down he’s going to bet on himself to have another banner year and then get the fiveyear max deal rather than a four-year deal that would have paid only at about 20 million dollars so what’s going on the Lakers are making a lot of news have yet to make a significant acquisition in terms happening across the hallway with the Clippers I don’t understand this they they do want a different type of backup center to Zubac uh Ivika has really made himself a very rock solid player but they’re talking when they drafted a 7 foot center from Penn State kind of gangly runs the floor name is Yanikerhauser he’s an athlete but he’s really raw he’s really grim kind of surprised that Clippers spent that pick in the first round on him a guy from Penn State clippers were a little bit stunned they thought they had the inside t get all things NBA okay i again my apology i couldn’t hear everything you said but I just want to check the second round is going to start here real soon right i mean are there are there guys out there in the second round that might be able to help the Lakers or the Clippers uh you know this coming year they must have their heart set on trading up that’s say there must be somebody that they’ve earmarked in the middle of the second round which is why they’re trying to trade up with the Chicago Bulls maybe to get as high as the 45th pick but I I don’t understand the other room that’s out there that they just offer Guru Hatchim to Heat in a deal for Andrew Wiggins i think Hatchima is more upside because he’s a defender and he’s physical wigs is a defender and more of a shooter uh but he’s not a warrior per se so it’s gonna be interesting lakers are obviously hitting a lot of different buttons trying to get somebody to make a transaction with them
yeah it seems like Andrew Wiggins was a guy that’s always sort of bounced around he wasn’t he a number one overall pick yeah I mean he was a really good basketball player coming out of Kansas but there have been some injuries and sometimes guys go to teams and they just don’t necessarily where they wind up getting drafted i think he’s on his fourth or fifth team now and Pat Riley is trying to trying to move him in I’ve been told is all a Hatchima guy but Hatchimura John has never been able to really harness consistency which is is kind of a surprise there so that’s what’s what’s going on all things NBA we got halftime our podcast we’re on the road trying to get through it today we apologize again because we just had some real technical snafuss this podcast is brought to you by Dixieine Lumber and Homeowners nine locations to serve you San Diego john Dixie Line is known for a lot of different things but I the more and more I’m around them it’s just not doors and windows but what they’re doing with kitchen counters what they do with elevations in the home in the kitchen the room the family room etc it’s kind of dynamic and people can get a firsthand look i’m really enthralled with the Salana Beach display that they have put together just explain for all of podcast on live stream how Dixie Line helps them renovate their home well I mean take a look at this video here i mean Dixie Line one of the things they do besides helping out homeowners contractors and builders they do a lot with custom home developers and here’s a video of a home being built a custom home being built they’re putting in a stairway and you get all you know Dixie Line provides all of this lumber all of the building materials you can see the the windows that are being installed in this custom home so you know whether you just need just a replacement window for your kitchen or your bedroom something to seal up and be something that looks clean or if you’re building that dream home somewhere here in San Diego County Dixie Line’s got it all for you been in San Diego for 100 years

yeah mlb notes problems on and off the field let’s talk breaking story waiting for an announcement out of the Dominican Republic tonight on the future of Franco he of course is the once star shortstop Tampa Bay Rays judge promised a vision by Thursday night on the sexual trafficking sexual misconduct case in which Franco relationship with 14year-old girl for four months paid the girl’s mother $103,000 to allow the daughter to have this intimate relationship with Franco before found out about it uh if found guilty by the judge Wanda Franco faces four to 10 years in prison the mother is facing her daughter facing 14 years in prison so as we went on the air this hour we’re still awaiting the decision the announcement from the judge in the Dominican in Pittsburgh they’re having a tough time they got the great great young pitcher Paul Skins he’s got a he’s got an erra of like 2.26 he’s got a four and seven record because they don’t score any runs for him now they got another problem in Pittsburgh John with young center O’Neal Cruz i don’t know if you saw the video of this he just he just does not seem to be focused he does not seem to be intense there was a a Texas fly ball hit in front of him just this past week he tried a shoesting catch failed to catch the ball ball ricocheted by him went all the wall he stood there and looked at it had his right fielder go chase it down terrible play and then the next day hit a ground ball into a double play he thought there were two outs in the inning he didn’t run just kind of a couple steps up from the batter’s box promptly he got benched by the Pirates they got a real attitude issue with a very O’Neal Cruz so we’ll see where that how much long this to go on and on talk about the Red Sox and these guys the Dodgers and what they did in postseason boy both are on real rough road right now walker Buler who started in 5-2 in Boston is now 5 and5 he’s got a 6.9 erra he hasn’t lost his velocity but his mechanics are all screwed up they’re talking about yanking him the rotation and putting him in the bullpen and they gave him a one-year contract at 15 million flity who pitched the Dodgers into the playoffs beat the Padres’s etc he’s being out of the Detroit rotation and he’s he’s got a year contract signed as a free agent he’s got a 4.83 erra and he’s just not dominating getting anybody out like he did last season isn’t it weird how well those guys pitched in September and October when the Dodgers really needed him and right now both of them are in trouble really bad story in Arizona i don’t know if you’ve seen the video of this shortstop catel Marte game was start stopped he started to weep as he walked to the pitcher mound tory Lo came and embraced him a White Sox fan in Chicago made some slur remark uh while M was walking out on the field about his mother who died tragic auto accident the White Sock security got the guy pressing charges of disorderly conduct against him he’s been barred from all major league ballparks and the white socks publicly apologized to Catel Marte yesterday just a really ugly story white Socks trying to get better they’re looking for pitching anywhere they can get they just signed Noah Synergard remember him uh outstanding starter with the New York Mets he was one of three or four young guys all arrived simultaneously and that was supposed to be the core group for the New York Mets and he’s had arm problems shoulder problems lat problems and it’s just bounced all over the majors he’s been out of baseball since the end of last season white Sox have just signed No Guard colorado Rockies guess about this bud Black is back with the Rockies fired after that 21- nothing defeat at the hands of the Rays what maybe a month ago bud Black has been rehired as the director of pitching operations for the entire Rockies organization so as bad as are not a bitter partying for Bud Black he’s back in Denver and how about the Mets and how about the Yankees boy are they scuffling and struggling the Mets just went through a stretch where they lost 10 of 11 again they got a lot of pitching problems sodto is starting to hit but right now the Mets Mets have hit a kid and the Yankees lost nine of 12 down and got problems we’re waiting on Wander Franco how about the Arizona story how about Bud Black going back to Denver hey the podium belongs to you yeah well Bud Black going back to Denver is weird i mean if you get fired it’s just why would you want to go back to work for that organization so I know Bud Black wants to stay in the business but I just thought that was a weird move you know just a couple other quick comments the O’Neal Cruz stuff I saw him when that ground ball got past him at center field rolled to the the fence and he just turned around and looked at it he didn’t even try to go get the ball and there have been other cases where O’Neal Cruz has not hustled down the line to first base on plays just that dude is just blessed with such athletic talent why isn’t this guy’s head screwed on straightly very immature and you know he came up and was a flash in the pan but he’s not hitting he’s hitting 156 right now he swings a lot of bad pitches there’s a nonchalance to his game which just absolutely blows me away i don’t know what the Pirates are going to do and they’re taking heat every minute of every day from the fans and the media and now one of your one of your prospects one of your stars of the future is just acting so immaturely and so lazy so just really weird story okay we go from those baseball topics on the table let’s talk about Padres’s Dodgers dodgers Padres’s because road trips are coming and h starting starting to see the standings get a little separation in them there John
yeah yeah the Dodgers are pulling the way you know the the Padres’s are going on the road to Cincinnati so yeah we’re the the easy part of the schedule is supposedly behind the Padres’s right or the hard part is behind them
the Padres’s go to Cincinnati then they go to Philadelphia this will not be easy reds are playing much better baseball and the Phillies Rice Harper’s been hurt the Phillies still have I don’t know 42 43 wins on the season that’s still a team that hits the hell out of the ball and the have to play the beginning of the series Cincinnati without Robert Suarez who’s obviously serving the aftermath of that being suspension for Otani good piece of news for the Padres’s i think U Darvish is ready to be activated uh he went to Lake Elsenor on an extended simulated game they pitched the effect at three innings uh was clocked at 94 miles an hour threw 51 pitches set back so far so I don’t know whether or not they’re bringing him back and maybe use him like the Dodgers are using Otani john let him start a game that’s becomes a bullpen and let him build that way let give him one inning and see how he does give him a second inning the next time the third inning and see if they can grow that they want they want to control Otani so that he does not get stressed out get into bad situations and maybe that’s the way to do it but it’s the most positive piece of news on Dar we’ve seen uh in a while the Dodgers you know they’re playing O i think the Pres might take a page from Dodger notebook with U Darvish Roi they are now talking that he’s gone for rest of the season he’s got this impment in his shoulder they gave him an injection he’s not been to throw they had rebuild all of his mechanics etc and one other Dodger note Epipe Mizohara remember him the personal aid of Sh Otani who sto $17 million was convicted uh tax evasion he’s just been transferred has just begun a 57month prison sentence he asked for leniency the judge said no he asked that he be allowed to be serve the prison term in the state of California the judge said no the judge just sentenced him to 4 years 9 months in Allentown Pennsylvania which is a really tough prison for somebody to go to and then the judge signed the documentation that when his prison sentence is over Mizuhara is going to be deported from the country back to Japan even though he’s a US citizen that’s just that that’s an amazing story so John was the Mizuhara story that’s wild i mean that just kind of goes to show you what’s going on in America with immigrants if Misuhara is a citizen why is he being deported or maybe or is he just a legal resident lee what is it
i think illegal resident may be some type of visa
yeah maybe that’s what they’re going to do they’ll probably just let that visa expire um nice to see you Darvish coming back the Padres’s could use him the um you know Michael King I know has been doing some long toss and he was feeling encouraged I had heard but you know those those kids like Burger and Vasquez and Kolic have done a great job even though Burger got hit in the by the line drive you know you like to get Darvish back but right now pitching I don’t know if pitching starting pitching is really the problem for the Padres’s they’re just not hitting so they got to get that straightened out they’ve got problems of both ends of the spectrum too many of starters can’t get into the fifth inning an issue where in teractor in the bullpen that’s a big issue and obviously holes in the batting order and you know if and Machado don’t do it then hardly anybody else ever does it on a consistent basis i still think there’s going to be a transaction i still think there’s going to be a trade coming but this this first piece of realistic decent news I think we’ve had on the Darovish situation that’s all things baseball john we go from that got an NFL store it’s going to blow you away yeah this was wild about collusion amongst the owners let’s just walk through this process remember four or five years ago when the Cleveland Browns gave Watson a full guaranteed contract 230 million every minute every second every dollar nobody had ever done that in the NFL and a huge uproar well the NFL management council sets the guidelines for how you negotiate what you negotiate what you pay management council recommended to the NFL owners do not give any future quarterback a guaranteed contract again the owners try to control the cost well what happened was Lamar Jackson contract came up and he the board he didn’t get it from Baltimore same thing with Kyler Murray same thing with a couple of other quarterbacks so then a grievance was filed on behalf of 594 players whose contracts came up none of them got the full guarantee grievance was filed an arbitrator held a hearings arbitrator late last week story finally leaked out the arbitrator accused the National Football League Management Council of creating collusion now it’s one thing to say it another thing to prove it and then there’s a paper trail and this blew me away as part of discovery in this grievance they found out that Dean Spanos sent a text to Michael Bidwell the owner of the Arizona Cardinals congratulating Bidwell on getting a contract deal done with his star young quarterback Kyler Murray that did not include very many guarantees and Spanos in in essence said “We’re going to take your framework and that’s what I’m going to do with Justin Herbert you connect the dots on all this John.” And the word that comes out is collusion and all the NFL needs to do is look at what happened decades ago in Major League Baseball when Detroit Tiger pitcher Jack Morris when baseball colluded against giving him the kind of contract he wanted thought he deserved and they wound up having to pay $220 million in damages to a whole bunch of free agent players from that era because of collusion and the NFL management council told these owners “Don’t give your guys guaranteed contracts find a way not to do it.” And then Spanos spills the beans in a text and it gets out there paper trail shows there was collusion you got 594 players who were damaged during this segment of time i guarantee you there’s going to be another grievance filed on the union is going to go after them just like baseball’s union did on behalf of Jack Morris and all those other free agents we’ve not heard the end of the story john this this thing just blew me away and I don’t know whether it’s the stupidity of Spanos or the arrogance of Spar Spanos or the incompetence to think you could collude and not have somebody find out about it wow john your reaction well two parts to this part A is is it definitely looks like collusion it definitely looks like something that someone’s going to file a grievance you know we may even get you know politicians involved in this whole thing but according to the standard here in America that seems to qualify but in my opinion this shouldn’t be a big deal i mean because first of all owners are going to talk amongst owners and they’re you know talking they’re giving each other advice is that evil plotting collusion you know behind closed doors well it is but I think they’re all learning their lesson not to give out these Deshun Watson contracts that are guaranteed when some of these quarterbacks like Watson barely played at all so I I mean it’s technically collusion but it doesn’t bother me at all i think this is something that even in the private sector we see people do this all the time where businesses will talk amongst themselves or at a trade organization they’ll kind of get a sense for what kinds of jobs are in certain pay ranges to me this is a big nothing burger and nothing burger could be worth $300 million look what that nothing burger became in Major League Baseball and I guarantee you there is going to be a grievance from the players association oh I agree
we have not heard the end of this and there’s a paper trail there is hard documentation just I’m just stunned by this story okay that’s that’s a big story in the National Football League you want to join us in fans form we’ll try to get you up here you got an opinion on that hey this has been a big week in the NBA and we got a big weekend coming in the NHL john next topic
yeah big weekend coming in the NHL and by the way the live stream quality is taking a boost up it looks good Lee
okay content’s been damn good let’s talk about what’s going on with the NHL we got the draft on Friday we’ve already had some significant trades and the deals are not done let me just jump around here edmonton Oilers I thought they’d get rid of this guy what I don’t understand is why Vancouver took this guy edmonton traded controversial Evander Kane and all his baggage in his 5.3 million contract to the Vancouver Conucks for a mid-round draft pick kane has had a history of junk off the ice and a history of erratic performances vancouver’s got huge problems with their roster in terms of guys they traded guys they had to get rid of guys are going to lose that’s a big issue in Vancouver edmonton their general manager Stan Bowman said a week ago Friday there will be changes well that that’s the first big one and there’s more to come florida Panthers I don’t know how they’re going to do this they’ve got a fistful of free agents each one of those guys raised the Stanley Cup a week ago florida sam Bennett who won the K Smith Trophy MVP in the playoffs wants 10 million a year brad Marshand who saved him with big goals in all the different playoff series he wants 8 million a year and I don’t know where they’re going to come up with the money for the third unrestricted free agent Aaron Ecklad this bear is watching i think these veteran players want to stay in Florida they love the culture but Florida can’t pay all these guys toronto free agent window opens July 1 send Mitch Mner’s mail somewhere else now it’s a huge debate how good a player is Mitch Mner yeah he scored 221 goals in his career in Toronto he’s been surrounded by pretty good talent toronto has never won bleep in the whole Mitch Mner Austin Matthews John Tiveres era and Mner wants to be the highest paid player in the league hot Rumor LA Kings Carolina Hurricane and the San Jose Sharks and Las Vegas all interested in Mitch Mner anaheim Ducks another big trade this one with a little bit of controversy attached to it trevor Ziggress the former number one draft pick the teenage sensation he’s shipped to the Philadelphia Flyers this comes a week after the Ducks traded for Chris Krider uh of the New York Rangers this is a big big set of deals with the Ducks trying to change the culture of the team dallas Stars interesting story they’re trying to move some payroll they’re shopping Jason Robertson former 40 goal scorer jason Robertson is could be coming to the Ducks there might be a third major deal involving Anaheim and the general manager Pat Verbique and John one last story that just broke within the hour the NHL is about to announce a new four-year collective bargaining agreement and the NHL is announcing they’re going to an 84 game schedule next season 84 games as much as I may love hockey the reality is the season’s way too long the wear and tear of these players is too much and they’re going to 84 games now they’re going to cut back in the preseason but I just get the sense the NHL threw more money on the table and the players association said we’ll take that money and make these guys play 84 games in a regular season that’s going to be announced tomorrow an expanded schedule in the National Hockey League john fire a slapshot and don’t kick the puck into your own net do you have an opinion go ahead
well first the question um right now is it isn’t it an 80game schedule
yes
okay so we’re talking about adding four games i don’t think that’s going to be the end of the world especially if they trim down some of those preseason games but let’s talk about the Oilers because you said there’s going to be changes in Edmonton okay evander Kane gets shipped out they still got the problem with Steuart Skinner i don’t know if they they have a strategy with the goalkeeper i know they were talking about Gibson coming over from the the Ducks and do you think there’s any chance that superstars uh Conor McDavid or Leon Dryside will get dealt not at all actually they’re trying to create I think space their budget will m David’s got one more year to go on his contract and to stay there uh but they they got to fix some of the components and they they themselves a three million by getting Kane off the roster in Vancouver people shaking their say why him we need help why him he’s got so much baggage we’ll we’ll talk about that another segment the history of the junk that involved in and he’s not the player that he used to be when he first came the Chicago Blackhawks okay moving on we go with the highspeed sports wire let’s bring it up here talk a little 12 Mountain West yeah we got a lot there’s a lot of stuff breaking in other segments let’s just hop around the road map pack 12 conference July 1st have has to announce the addition of another member that would get them to eight full-times member is going to be Texas State texas State just over the weekend announced they were withdrawing from the Sunball Conference they’ll pay a 5 million B texas State comes on the 12 pack i don’t think it moves the needle i don’t think it has a big impact in the state of Texas that’s the way it is mountain West Conference is involved in this litigation this mediation over the past 12 you know the rules were San Diego State Boise State all those guys wanted to leave you had to pay $18 million as an exit fee but then as part of the scheduling thing the Mountain West cost you uh a total of $66 million in poaching fees well Pac 12 is has filed litigation against the Mountain West saying that’s unfair that thing is in mediation right now it’s been going on and on and on and have not been able to solve it big Sky Conference which just lost Sacramento State we talked about them going independent in football they’re not going to get division one they’ll continue to be an independent at 1A but the Big Sky which is a really good conference the Montana the Montana States Idaho Idaho states Big Sky has just announced they’ve expanded they’re adding Utah Tech and Southern Utah State which will be competitive in a in a conference but they’ve been able to keep all their anchors you know Montana Montana State Idaho Idaho State have not jumped from the Big Sky Conference uh this is a really cool story morehead State Morehead State University it’s not a football power used to be division two now it’s division 1A the greatest football alumni was Phil Sims phil Sims played there in the 1970s he was an option quarterback small town kid from Florida who wound up going to a school in the Ohio Valley Conference and it went on to the NFL and had an illustrious career with Bill Parcels anyhow Phil Sims network commentator he’s done some enormous things for his alma mo raising money they just announced Morehead State that they are naming the football stadium after him that really really special uh USC first time they’ve spoken about what happened i’m talking about the basketball player the son of Gilbert Arenas the longtime NBA star couple of months ago John we talked about this terrible auto accident that happened to Elijah Arenas at 3:00 in the morning in Chadzsworth he was coming back from a shooting basketball practice it was it was not speeding it was not drugs it was not alcohol what we found out he broke his silence elijah testified that he was driving the computers his Tesla froze he lost the ability to the vehicle and he lost the ability to slow vehicle down the vehicle went off the street over a fire hydrant head-on crashing tree caved in the whole front of the Tesla vehicle it exploded he got seat he could not get out because of the mechanisms and the computers he was sealed inside the vehicle and he he had smoke inhalation he got burned on the back climbed into the back seat tried to kick out the window they say he was in and out of consciousness for about 10 minutes and two passers by who saw the accident stopped bust out the back window and dragged him out and he was unconscious they put him in a pool of water to the fires out anyhow he’d been to two different hospitals he was induced into a coma because of the severity of the smoke inhalation he has recovered he is back on campus going to summer school classes not cleared for basketball yet but an absolutely amazing detail of what happened to the young man and he got trapped he did nothing at all except the computers in that Tesla vehicle froze and he he closed out his interview by saying “I really believed I was gonna die.” Absolutely amazing story the last story on the spire how about them SDFC soccerers they go to Vancouver they beat the first place Vancouver White Caps last night the rookie Milanki scores goals in the first game in Powway think about that this team is 113 and five this is a team that SC started from ground zero absolute square one as an expansion team and they’ve got 11 wins and they played a chunk of the games without their leading scorer Chuki Lozano what a phenomenal job of roster building and coaching by Mickey Varys and a bunch of guys that are dedicated to the task so John a lot of different stories there from Pack 12 to the mounts to Phil Sim to this story USC how about the guys kicking out soccer ball well I mean I I saw the highlights of the of the um San Diego game and good on them and I I’ll tell you what I’m still getting used to this soccer schedule because I normally think the games are on Saturday sometimes Sunday but they have these midweek games that kind of catch me off guard especially since the season had taken a break you know for this club World Cup tournament and everything else that’s going on it’s just it’s just hard to keep track of it i got to pay closer attention but what a thrill you know they’re in first place now in the Western uh Conference or Western Division which I think is just fantastic but the story on this arena’s kid at SC now you know obviously a tragic situation a terrible car crash he was burned smoke inhilation i understand that we want to extend our condolences to him and his family and hopefully he recovers and can get back on the court but I know I’m a little suspicious by this because this all happened like at what 3:00 in the morning 5 in the morning and I don’t think you don’t usually see these kinds of incidents with Tesla vehicles where they suddenly lose control and you can’t control this the steering wheel you can’t control the accelerator just something smells a little bit fishy here Lee well this whole story obvious the timing of it was weird 3:00 in the morning kid working out uh the other people who have indicated that yeah the the young man has been fanatical about his preparation as an incoming freshman at USC i guess I give him benefit of the doubt but I mean the the I saw the video i I can’t believe that the kid walked away actually didn’t walk away got dragged out of the car and did not die but he opened up and he talked extensively about it and so did his father the former NBA star Gilbert Arena so I don’t know if there’s another page to the story that we’re going to find out in the future but that’s that’s the story that they are presenting right now and the fact that those two guys stopped and saw the car ablazing and found out somebody was in inside it and then busted through the back windows to get the kid out of the car it’s just amazing yeah just unbelievable yeah i mean so I’m happy that he’s getting taken care of hopefully he’ll be ready for the season
it is time fans form chat box open for business this podcast heading towards a great sports weekend brought by Dixie Line Lumber and Home Centers nine locations Dern San Diego if you got projects they got materials you want ideas they can help you just go to dixyline.com and see all the things that they have to offer john we got people they’re going to fire us some questions hopefully we’ll keep this thing going this thing won’t self-destruct and melt down like it has a couple times during the course of this afternoon broadcast go ahead where do you want to go
all right well let’s let’s we’ll kick it off a little bit of fun here this is from Jason S he goes “Hey is Saw using an original iPhone what’s going on no that’s it’s a rotary phone circa 1972 no it’s not a rotary phone i Yeah and this is weird because I’ve done a lot of these remotes abroad um and you know you use hotel Wi-Fi or my computer air card i’ve we’ve never had problems this is the first major problem and remember we did our podcast when I was based in Oregon and he was in Ireland and we did the podcast when he was in the Panama Canal and I was back in San Diego we’ve never had these problems except it’s happened this afternoon and of course I’m up on the St lawrence Seaway up in upstate New York near the Canadian border we’re trying we’re not taking any vacation time so we do ask you to give us some bonus points for that
okay murphy’s law all right hey let’s go to our friend Matt that always gives us a couple of bucks thank you Matt hey people forget there was hope Sodto might resign i think most fans would think differently of the trade or excuse me Sodto might resign i think most fans would think differently of the trade if you told them it was just a rental only one divisional series well understand this that when they made that transaction AJ that Prescott said “We are renting for three pennent races.” Th those are the exact words there was no ability nor intent because John who was he represented by
scott Boris
there you go so the Padres’s knew what they were entering in but they thought they were close and he would put him over the top he had a lousy first season second season he played well but then they were facing the reality he’s going to walk and we’re just not going to take draft pick compensation that’s why they executed the trade uh with the Yankees and of course the end deal is they they got talent in the Yankee deal and part of that talent then became a bargaining chip uh to make the trade to go get Dylan cease um I guess I guess I’d call it win-win but they knew all along this was a three-year rental it actually only wound up being two seasons so I’m not embittered by it but at the end of the day if the Padres’s don’t get close to the World Series for a third year in a row I’d really be disappointed yeah i mean that whole trade when that went down I was thrilled and I knew we gave up a lot of talent um you know McKenzie Gore James Wood Robert Hassel III CJ Abrams um you know this kid who Susanna who’s a great pitcher in the in the minors but you know you got to go for it sometimes and you got to put your chips into the table so I don’t really fault AJ for that but you know there was that talk oh maybe he’ll sign with us long term it seemed pretty clear very early on that he had no intention of signing long term and even there was talk I guess that Sidler was still wooing him to to get a deal done before you know he became terminally ill at the end of the day that agent always takes his players on the open market period exclamation point end of discussion okay let’s move on next one okay um let’s go here to the next one and we’ll go to uh John and he says “Hey good series between the Nationals and Padres’s game one showed what could have been after Burger got injured the Padres’s really seemed to have buckled down and played some disciplined baseball.”
Yeah they did and I think at the end of the day veteran pitching staff young batting order they made those kids chase you know James Wood just kind of disappeared after that first game because they pitched differently and he’s just going through a learning curve and Abrams had that good first game he didn’t get very many hits after that point in time washington’s just not there they’ve got they’ve got really good young cornerstone players some of the guys aren’t hitting but they’ve got a lot of good young players they desperately need more pitching and that’s that’s an ownership situation i wish the franchise would be sold because I think the one thing that’s come out of everything we’ve experienced here in San Diego it’s a message that everybody from you know Pittsburgh to Tampa to Miami they should pay attention to John if you build it people will come look at what what the experience of Padre baseball Petco Park has become you you can do that same thing in Washington and they’ve got some cornerstone players there so maybe new ownership’s going to allow them to open up the checkbook so they go get some veteran free agents to plant next to all those young kids that came in that that Padre trade it sound like a game plan to you
yeah I think so i mean you’d love to see them bust out you know spend some more money but I just believe if if the Padres’s can play to their potential they’ll be fine you know if Croninworth can hit like 270 you know and have you know some productive RBI’s have an ops like in the high 700s I think that’s fine but you know all these guys except Manny seem to be playing well below what their potential is well below what their I guess their career averages are i mean that to me seems like where the focus needs to be
the other factor is this has just not happened in the last six weeks it’s been going on for two to three years
so I just I don’t know that Jake will ever be the Jake we saw when he first came up and I’m sorry to say this because I happen to like the guy’s work ethic but Xander Bogart’s contract sure looks like Albert Puhol’s contract with the Angels does it not
so yeah there there’s issues here that just by sending him out there every day does not mean it’s going to change it
well he’s playing a little better right now so hopefully he can keep it going hey let’s go ahead to Casey we’ll talk a little uh hockey he goes “Hey good afternoon guys hacksaw do you think uh Conor McDavid gets traded this off season as he goes into the last year I assume of his contract
no no a thousand times no you’re not going to do that what they have to do though is they have to move some money around and that’s a byproduct of they found somebody Vancouver sucker to take a Vander Kane so that’s 5 million off the cap right now uh if if they move Steuart Skinner and they go a different direction with a different goalender maybe they’ll create some more space there scotty Bowman’s son Stan Bowman the general manager said there will be changes said that last Friday and already boom there’s one trade there but no there they going to keep those cornerstone guys and they’re just going to try to get different type people to surround those cornerstone guys i
think Edmonton fan would just come unglued if if the McDavid got traded could you imagine and I mean they’re just so disappointed right now
have to check check the area code is Casey King messaging us from the 406 is that Calgary is that Calgary Flim’s fan infuriating Edmonton Oiler fan in the province of Alberta
you you you’ve got to get as good with IP addresses as you are with area codes you know to transition into the 21st century hey here’s another quick note from John breaking news uh Franco guilty well we were expecting it and now it’s just come down while we’ve been on the air this we talked extensively about it i don’t know if there’s an appeal process in the Dominican Republic but he was looking at 4 to 14 years uh this a really seedy sleazy story about somebody that’s made a really bad decision his career is over i mean think about that he had just signed a $182 million contract with Tampa Bay after two phenomenal seasons with a raise and he gets involved in this off the field just just an awful story okay John next topic
next one let’s go back to Matt who gave us some more money thank you Matt he says “Uh hey maybe it’s easy for me as a Dodger fan to say but it does seem like Tis has a maturity problem merryill seems like he’ll be a steady hand.” Well in terms of Tatis we don’t know because they won’t tell us if he’s dinged up you know he really got plunked on the forearm and then he wound up hitting 188 for an extended period of time now we lose Merryill he’s had two injuries had injuries this season so that’s that’s a concern too but he comes back and he just he plays well and you know he like Tatis and Leado they’re just grinders they’re just ballers they’re they are really really good players tatis not reach the superstar stat level compared to where he was when broke into the game you you know what’s interesting is there’s a lot of guys like Tatis that are these these big tall athletic guys from the Dominican that kind of have the the long dreads you know it’s like him Tatis and O’Neal Cruz and um the the the guy for the Cincinnati Reds what’s his name um
yeah so it’s interesting
cruz yeah so there’s a lot of just really talented guys coming up boy if Tatis man you he should be like just killing it and he just can’t seem to pull it all together i I don’t know what it is we’ll continue to track it continue to talk about it
john let’s uh do some social media real quick here because we’re having in-n-out problems again yeah let’s just do a few of them and then kind of wrap this one up a little bit short and uh
let’s talk here about the villains between the Padres’s and the Dodgers this is from Joe and uh Joe says um was there a villain in all of this actually there were a few number one the Dodgers minor league pitching why does this championship team use 34 pitchers this season which isn’t yet to the halfway mark number two Mike Schilt earlier in the game Pahace was hit by a pitch he stared at the pitcher and Shilt was immediately out of the dugout yelling at Pahes schult clearly wanted a confrontation and villain number three is Manny Machado his postgame sanctimonious thuggish threat they better pray Tatis isn’t hurt was typical Manny well I guess I could sign that memo i kind of tend to agree with all those things uh the managers really fueled the incident i mean I like Schult but at times he’s a hotthead i like Roberts roberts though acts like a red ass and there’s no way Dave Roberts should put hands on Mike Schultz body i thought Dave should have gotten at least a twoame suspension schult deserved the one game because he’s the one that made the run in the move go towards the Dodger dugout um it’s it’s really intriguing though we we know Tatis got hammered with that pitch inside he didn’t respond everybody else did otani got plunked and that was really scary because he got a hitund mile pitch in the upper part of the back just below the neck he had gone five inches higher something really bad would have happened and he never responded except he gathered himself walked down the line and then he he joked with a rise and he talked to the Padre Dugout and he kind of diffused the whole situation so hopefully cooler heads will prevail and we won’t have these problems August 15th when they meet again okay yeah i I don’t know to me the the a lot of it was just weird circumstances in the way that game went down i mean I I didn’t sense that the Dodger pitchers were throwing at the Padres i mean to to try to plunk him i mean I think they just were throwing high and tight to Tatis because that’s what all the pitchers are doing uh but it did get out of hand and uh boy it’s this series is going to be great when they re resume in August let’s keep moving on here
yeah we got a few social media questions and comments all Dodger Padre related man there’s a lot of opinions in the parking lot about this
okay you want to stay with Dodger Padre okay let’s go here and uh this is with uh Ryan and uh Ryan says “The Dodgers throwing at the Padres’s was unintentional the Padres’s hitting the Dodgers was very intentional proof is the Padres’s pitchers got suspended and not any of the Dodger Dodger pitchers did.”
I agree uh and even when you know when Pahes got hit early in that series I didn’t think they were throwing at him that was just pitchers not controlling balls or trying to jam jam pitches i do think Suarez intentionally plunked him and then walked off the mound there was no never any barking over the ejection or anything and usually if guys guys think that they’ve been treated badly by the umpire they will they will have a conversation with him suarez just walked to the dugout so I I tend to think it was intentional major League Baseball thought it was intentional too that’s why he got he wound up with a twoame suspension but hopefully nobody’s going to get hurt because that’s the one thing is you don’t want somebody to take a pitch in the face you don’t want somebody hit in the back of the neck and those two things could have happened in the in that that four game series eight eight hit hit batsmen in four games but I think seven of them were accidental i think there was one intentional
yeah i mean it’s you you can see the body language of the pitchers and and so um yeah it was Vasquez that hit Otani and that definitely seemed to be on purpose but I think when Pah got hit for the first time I think wasn’t it Steven Kolic that that that hit him and I think immediately Stephen was like you know hitting his chest like you know my bad I’m sorry but Pes didn’t want to hear it at all
yeah concur some of these guys are real fire brands too and they’re going to respond that’s that’s the the DNA of some of these guys okay next one John
okay let’s do a little bit of hockey here and this is uh this is from WBJ and he says “Mitch Mner is the most overrated player in the NHL ever he is an epic failure during the playoffs anyone who pays him over $10 million is clueless even $10 million makes him overpaid.”
Well everybody’s getting payraises because the collective bargaining agreement and the gross revenues in hockey have just really rocketed and that’s that’s great for the players and the sport right now is just at a peak zenith of of interest uh the TV ratings have just gone through the roof so star players deserve it i guess the question I pose is he a difference maker on a team u there’s no doubt he can score goals i mean 221 goals in his course of his career in Toronto but at the end of the day bottom line Toronto has never won Bleep and that’s that’s just not with Mner that’s that’s with Mner at Austin Matthews and John Tiverus and Nelander it’s just absolutely stunning where they are i mean they haven’t gotten one of Stanley Cup since 1967 so that’s that to me is a big issue but there may be somebody out there because they got capac thinker might be the difference maker that puts us over the top um you know the the window opens July 1 they can sign free agents the big issue is he’s saying and he’s going to make visits he’s not going to sign July 1 historically in recent years guys signed contracts the first minute that window opens he says he wants to go meet with some of the teams that he would think might be finalists for his services so it’s going to be a fascinating story the first week of July
now Lee if you were to look at all the offensive players in the NHL does Mitch Mner rank in the top five or the top 10 i mean where where do you have him
well he’s not McDavid he’s never scored 60 goals like his teammate Austin Matthews has he’s not the complete feisty guy who makes every type of conceivable play like Dryidle i would say he’s top 10 but does does that mean he has to be the highest paid player in the league no probably not now maybe he won’t get 14.1 million maybe he won’t get the kind of contract he expects but there’s always somebody out there that thinks like this last acquisition is going to put us over the top so you know I keep hearing Vegas i I heard the LA Kings San Jose for some reasons of the opinion they have a lot of cap space but does he want to go play on a team that’s not winning now that San Jose much like the Ducks are stockpiling a lot of young players but you know I don’t know if San Jose and the Ducks would view themselves as being Western Conference final why would he go join one of them so going to be really interesting and again so we’re talking right match and then we’re talking 14 mil for him he’s Good but is he a differencemaker nah okay keep moving you want to get some more in here
let’s do a couple
okay let’s uh let’s go here talk a little San Diego sports this is with Al he goes San Diego is a dead sports town in in basketball lost the Rockets and Clippers NBA and the concistadors and the sales of the ABA lost the Chargers to LA almost lost the Padres’s to our nation’s capital in 1974 yeah but the only difference is this is a hell of a baseball town and this is becoming a very vibrant soccer community so what we have when we don’t have the full breath of all the franchises John we got two pretty good franchises that put good products on the field and therefore are getting good response it’s I’ll be honest with you there’s a hole in my heart we lost that NFL team because that greedy owner pulled it out of here i don’t think San Diego from a psyche standpoint has ever recovered from the loss of the Chargers you know we obviously have got a great college basketball program but the football program has just lagged so far behind and there just seems that they’re running uphill are we a complete major league market no we’re not but we what we’ve got they got some pretty good franchises here you know I think San Diego gets a bad rap for all this because granted it is a small market you know or a medium-sized market because of the geography and the way we’re set up but we’ve had a lot of crap owners here i mean because you know even when the Chargers were playing I mean the people would still show up it But it was the whole stadium thing the way Dean Spanos conducted his business you know he wanted to go to LA the whole time so did uh Sterling with the Clippers he wanted to get out of here we’ve had so many terrible owners and even if you go back what to 1974 that was before Ray Croc I think and then Yeah so there’s just been so many bad owners so I think it reflects poorly on San Diego unfairly concur um you win you get support what the Sidler family has done on behalf of Padre Baseball has made it a destination point and just a good night out in addition to seeing a lot of electric uh baseball hey John this has been interesting again we’ll just apologize uh that we had such connectivity problems at the front end of this podcast thank you for sticking with us hope you’ll tell your friends what we’re doing Mondays and Thursdays on this podcast uh check my website i write on it every day of the week uh also want you to subscribe when you do all the alerts we send out when we put stuff up on the YouTube channel john take a deep breath here comes the rest of the NBA draft then we got the NHL we got a Padre road trip too so we got a lot to We’ll be here doing it again i’ll be at my cottage in upstate New York on Monday hopefully with better connectivity there there i told you not to use that phone it had batteries in that old cell that 1979 cell phone you had had dead batteries in it too John no I’m only kidding
it’s a good thing we don’t have one of those old school modems where you take the handheld phone and put it on the little suction cups to get it to to deliver the message but I’ll tell you what Lee it’s great that we can do this while you’re on the road next time you’ll be up in the aderondex so be some nice scenery behind you
john have yourself great sports weekend we’ll catch up on Monday
