go go go ahead go ahead i was about to say
I said to hit him with a topo we got the topo in the chat topo of the morning topo of the afternoon topo jeff Peterson making a deal
doug’s excited and it’s because as I just mentioned the Hornets traded for Colin Ston and a 2032nd round pick they come over from the Utah Jazz in exchange for center Ysef Nerkage who the Hornets acquired in a deal with Phoenix last year and basically what was a salary dump for Phoenix and they also got the less favorable of a whole bunch of different first round picks but they got another first round pick on top of it so now they flip Nerkach for Colin Ston and a 2032nd round pick ston at 26 years old spent the past three seasons in Utah he averaged over 18 points a game over four assists he led the Jazz in total points each of the last two seasons he recorded careerh highs and three-point percentage 41% and free throw percentage 87% this past year fun player always been in the double digits really scoring the Hornets have a backup point guard before we get started into what this really means for this year’s squad Doug I want to go back to 2018 the Cleveland Cavaliers were coming off a year having just played without Kyrie Irving as LeBron’s running mate he had forced his way out in a trade to Boston cleveland got Isaiah Thomas in return it didn’t really work out all that well cleveland had to figure out the future of their franchise after that and really they had to figure out whether LeBron James maybe maybe the best basketball player of all time they had to figure out if LeBron was going to stay with the Cavs he doesn’t he ends up leaving the for the Lakers in free agency of 2018 and meanwhile in Charlotte Hornets land we’re trying to figure out what are we going to do with Kimell Walker well reportedly the Hornets were willing to trade him but there wasn’t anything worth pulling the trigger on there was however something floating out there about a possible trade with the Cavs that never really materialized and I go back to Zack Low on ESPN October 16th 2018 quote Kimba Walker he may not quite be worth upending your franchise for unless you are one player away from a shot at Golden State these the Cavs for instance would have flipped the number eight pick for Walker had LeBron committed to resigning league sources say who did the Cavs select with that eighth overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft it would be the guy that was mocked to them the entire time yes point guard out of Alabama Colin Ston the prophecy is fulfilled colin Ston is your newest member of the Charlotte Hornets doug what are your thoughts um I thought really I could sum everything up into this jeff Peterson ain’t no Mitch okay he’s out there ready to deal i knew that would get a I thought I would get a snicker i thought it would at least get a snicker out of that smile
here I had to grab an lollipop for this by the way get your
That would have gotten a Cheers at the low bar that would have gotten a cheers at the low bar i’ve got a I’ve got a um Imagine it’s an lollipop
um I because I drank all my lollipop because they’re so good so I was take I was taking a nap like half an hour ago in fact you know what’s funny i was listening to a podcast to get myself to sleep because I needed I need a little 20-minute nap to get the because my mind was hazy i’d been working all Sunday morning i just needed to knock the cobwebs off and I was listening to this podcast and the podcast said that there’s research scientific research that taking a 20-minute nap was uh would would give you a Eureka moment would would would stir your brain in the same way that just getting a good night’s sleep so I said “Great 20-minute nap.” And I wake up and I said “Eureka the Charlotte Hornets just made a significant trade.” I don’t even know what it means honestly i know I know that it means that the Hornets move Ysef Nerkach and now they’ve traded for Ysef Nerkach they’ve dealt Yousef Nerkach and out you know outgoing what they’ve had to send in doing those two moves is a second round pick Cody Martin and Vasameich what they’ve gotten in return for those two moves is a 2026 first round pick Colin Ston and a 2030 second round pick um that’s that’s incredible that’s incredible return for dealing for a player and then dealing that player i know that they don’t have enough at the center position i know that Colin Ston is going to if he remains with the Charlotte Hornets if this isn’t some like crazy first move of like 15 he’s going to give the Hornets something that they desperately need and that’s downhill scoring i think he’s an effort defender but he has some issues defensively that hopefully Charles Lee can work with him on and the entire staff can can help turn him into a better defender than he has been because he’s been playing on a bad team in Utah and he didn’t really get to experience the the the great version of of the Cavaliers that we see now so I you know I have a lot of questions about what his role will be on the team and how he’s going to react to possibly going to the bench if that is his ultimate role just a lot of questions here but but here’s the thing i would rather have questions than the answers that I had before and the answers that I had before were this is not a roster that makes a lot of sense to me if the Hornets are looking to compete this I think was a step in the direction of competing
okay what does it mean and I think it’s a great question perhaps that’s where we should start on this emergency podcast it could mean a bunch of different things i do know that he’s our best bet to be the backup point guard because out of all the guards that the Hornets have accumulated during this offseason process so far the draft we’re about to figure out what the Hornets are going to do in free agency the negotiation process starts tomorrow and then they’ll officially be able to sign their free agents come July 6th but there are a lot of guards on this team as it stands currently so let’s go through the names shall we you have LaMelo Ball
i can I can pull up the I can pull up the rotation station document while you read them off as well
yeah please do lamelo Ball Brandon Miller if you want to count him as a two you have Josh Green that’s still on the team you have Nick Smith Jr you have Colin Ston who you just traded for those are all backup starters all backcourt players right now we’re not done yet they just drafted a few guys and Coniple that’s six seion James that’s seven we still need to figure out if this Leam McNeely thing is gonna become official anytime soon i know a little little worried you know a little worried but Liam McNeely
hold on hold on hold on let’s let’s slow down for a second because I did see all over Hornet social media
they had to go back to some of these Liam McNeely post and put a little asterisk you know essentially like this deal is not done they’ve agreed in principle and I was just like oh my god don’t tell me don’t tell me that Mark Williams is going to fail another physical and the Phoenix Suns are go because at that point there’s no there’s no going I mean you could go back on the deal I guess but there’s no going back to a Mark Williams future anyway okay so let’s just let’s just assume I don’t know if that’s the right thing i’ll knock on wood let’s just assume that Liam McNeely is on the Hornets so that would mean eight guards yet there’s a few names that you didn’t hear because they’re technically not on the team but they’re definitely much so much into the Hornets atmosphere at least at this time trey man Jeff Peterson just told us in press availability that he’s a priority that he doesn’t see any reason as to why he wouldn’t be a member of the Hornets he’s been working out with all those guys this off season okay there’s Trey Man to consider there’s KJ Simpson to consider who is was on a two-way contract last year not currently under contract so KJ Simpson you got to figure him out seth Curry was on the team last year and Josh Aogi who has the non-g guaranteed deal I didn’t see anything reported on him over the weekend i know we were kind of waiting on the qualifying offer i know we were waiting on some AOI news i didn’t see anything maybe I missed it um but it’s a lot of guards Doug it’s a lot of guards
no Kogi no Kogi news yet uh now they do I think they have through the 30th they have through tomorrow
to guarantee that deal july 1st he would become uh I guess at that point he would become an unrestricted free agent if they didn’t guarantee the deal or no the deal would become guaranteed excuse me that either becomes guaranteed by the by them virt by virtue of them doing nothing um or they they wave it and they save some amount of dollars i’m not sure exactly what’s guaranteed and what portion of it’s not guaranteed um but I’ve so
I’ve officially moved Trey Mann i had him in the reserve slot
but with this move Colin Ston Canipple I still have Josh Green at the wing spot but I’m not as sure and I don’t know how sure you are but I’m not as sure that he’s going to be ready for the beginning of the season and all I’ve heard is shoulder surgery timeline unknown so I don’t know and maybe this could all be a signal that maybe they don’t know i I at this point Josh Green big question mark probably need to ask Jeff Peterson and company the next time we see him what the what their timeline for Josh Green is because I’m I’m a little unsure but I I’ve moved Trey Mann now to the question mark column in this document because I just don’t and KJ I think it’s a bad day to be Trey Man it’s a bad day to be KJ Simpson probably a bad day to be Nick Smith Jr if you’re any of these smaller developing guards on this roster uh you know Colin Ston and Conimple have just leaprogged you
they did so let’s take a look at the names okay so the guys that are most likely to be off this roster now josh Kogi it was a real one man we’ll always remember your point of attack defense it just is too easy to let you go seth Curry I valued his veteran leadership i valued his halfcourt bailout offense i valued having another Curry with the organization it just makes too much sense to have him gone kj Simpson small guard you already just traded for a backup point guard and Colin Ston who’s making $19 million very similar to the salary that Yousef Nerkish was making doesn’t make a lot of sense in my opinion to keep KJ Simpson unless you just are desperate for a third string point guard like strict point guard but that would be another name that’s easy to leave off and then we get to Trey Man where that’s not so easy because we talk about how much we love Joshi we loved Trey Eye after what he did once he was traded from OKC in exchange for Gordon Hayward he finished that season real strong way at the beginning of this season my god it was the whole 90s early 2000s aesthetic with AI he looked like him he was legitimately good he was defensively anticipating passing lanes and stealing the basketball and helping us score and you thought you might get him on the cheap because not a whole lot of teams in the NBA have money right now and Trey man was hurt last year he played like 13 18 I think it was 13 games just played 13 games and so maybe this signals that they don’t feel like Trey is healthy maybe that’s right maybe they just want to have a whole bunch of guards out there they do bring Trey back for the cheap if he’s only going to cost like $7 million then and that’s that’s a good enough player to have on the roster for 7 million that’s fine maybe that’s what they’re thinking but it does go to your point of we got a bunch of guards on the squad right now and anything could happen especially with Trey what does it signal for Colin and LaMelo minutes i’ll leave it there but there are a lot of questions surrounding our back court
well for sure but what I don’t know if you saw this but uh I believe it was either Fischer or Stein on the Stein line said that the Hornets were one of the teams interested in Tai Jerome so I think that interest is probably out the window probably would have taken the full mid-level exception non-t tax midlevel which was $14 million which then again so they’re about $22 million from the tax i still don’t think this team is going to pay the tax until they get into the playoffs you get in the playoffs and then you talk then you talk to the ownership group about hey can we go above the tax can we spend a little money to keep this train moving at least that’s the hope that’s not what they did in 1516 they decided not to do that u but you’re you’re definitely not going to do it until you make the playoffs uh so I don’t I don’t now I don’t think they’re going to go after Tai Jerome now I think they do have to address the center position someone in the chat just jumped in and said the Brooklyn Nets declined to tender Don Sharp his one-year $6 million qualifying offer so that puts him into unrestricted free agency uh also we talked about Jared Allen there could be a little sign and trade uh stuff there and how about Donovan Klingan because if you’re Portland you just you just spent a lot of draft capital uh you get to 16 you take uh Young Hansen a somebody that you think maybe maybe they think he’s a project but
I thought the Grizzlies took him i’m pretty sure they didn’t take him i thought the Grizzlies did
nope trailblazers traded into the pick to take Young Hansen so big question big question marks and I asked um our guy uh the the host of Locked on Blazers i said our guy is my I’m telling guys my mind is is is going crazy crazy here he’s the pass first point guard unlocked on Blazers i asked him like what’s with the center rotation now that you’ve got this new young center to deal with plus DeAndre Aton they’ve got to figure something out either Aton or Klingan somebody’s got to go in that rotation and so there are going to be possibilities for the Hornets to figure out their center rotation i also had my guy Hayes from Lock.NBA text me at jokingly “Hey do do you guys just not want a center or do you guys don’t care about not having a center?” And I texted back “The Charlotte Hornets have not had a center since Big Al Jefferson Walker you started this by saying let’s go back to 2018 let’s go back to 2017 when the Hornets were desperate to make moves to keep whatever playoff dreams they had alive and they traded for Miles freaking Plumbley that was their answer compare that to now when you’ve got Jeff Peterson trading for one for a player that I think could be in the category of most underrated players could be buried in Utah playing trash basketball colin Saxon’s a good ball player and he has he has had to just be subjected to what’s going on in Utah now he gets to come to Charlotte and probably play a role that he should have been playing all along which is coming off the bench and just being a microwave heater he gets to do that here and I love it and then if it works out great you try to find a contract extension for him and if it doesn’t he just comes off the books and you find another answer it’s perfect
uh Cody Zeller you’re by the way we apologize Cody we apologize our our bald beloved center let’s go to some Colin Ston stats i talked a little bit about it in the intro there but he averaged 18 points per game each of the last couple of seasons in fact he’s never been below 14 points per game the lowest he ever put up per contest was 14 ppg his first year with Utah he spent the first four years of his NBA career with Cleveland got hurt only played 11 games in 202122 and then was traded to Utah i think he has kind of reclamated a lot of what people thought of his game except people aren’t really paying attention all that much because he is playing with Utah a team that’s actively been tanking and been punished for actively tanking for each of the last couple of seasons but man you start to look at the three-point percentage it’s a little misleading when writeups have hey he just posted his careerhigh in three-point percentage because that means he’s been quite bad at it each of the last couple of years that’s not the case no misleading here with Colin Ston shot 40% this past year 39% the year prior 39% the year prior to that and in fact the last two seasons he’s been shooting 39% or more from distance on four attempts per game so pretty good you look at the 48% overall field goal percentage we’d love to see that the 85% uh uh free throw percentage is very good we’d love to see that you look at the driving stats you mentioned that Doug you look at what he was doing in terms of getting to the rim he gets there quite frequently he got there less so last year just in the 45th percentile but we’ll take that that’s totally fine actually shoots a lot of mid-range jumpers compared to a lot of the other combo wings that are out there in the NBA was in the 98th percentile and all mid-range jumpers which runs counter to what you usually think of with the Charles Lee offense but I think with a backup point guard you you can have everybody else spread out and then you can start to run your Colin get to his spots put some rim pressure on the defense and then kick out to Khan Canipple in the corner brandon Miller LaMelo Ball Colin Ston minutes that sounds sexy to me i really like what you got there and uh once he does get to the rim by the way just finish up with the accuracy rather than just the frequency he does get there and he shoots 62% once he gets to the cup which is 44th percentile but that’s fine like we can’t be picky around here when it comes to the frequency and the accuracy colin Saxon’s a good player he’s on the books for a couple of years at 19 mil Doug and it feels like Utah could have gotten a lot more for him and all we had to give up was uh Nerkach and that’s fine with me i I I feel very good about this trade well salute Nerkach came here and and you know brought some physicality and and brought a little bit of interesting center play that they haven’t had in terms of actually just putting up a three-point shot salute to him super professional hopefully now look if you’re Utah and you just gave up Colin Ston and a second round pick they gave up a second round pick too when I first read it I thought “Oh the Hornets gave up a second round pick to get Colin Ston.” And then I did I had a double take again i just got it from an app i went the Hornets got a second round pick out of this as well are you freaking kidding me this is amazing okay so Colin Ston also correct me if I’m wrong super athletic player right
yeah i mean I think Colin Ston is powerful i think he’s like a power athlete and finishes with strength which is what we would love to have around here
again it’s a contrast uh I don’t mean to do the con play on words uh as often as I think we’re going to do but okay actually I do mean to do it yeah I mean it’s gonna be a thing we do it’s a contrast to Khan Canipple it’s also a contrast to Brandon Miller and Leavello Ball this gives them something that I think even more so than Trey Man trey Man had a had good wiggle like he could get to spots and and that little burst that we saw before he hurt the back like he could get his he could get to his spots via his dribble and his wiggle colin does it with power colin does it with probably a really nice first step and so like I’m I’m just super excited about this move and and I’m excited because it opens up it opens up so many possibilities i’m not you know I think there would be certain moves that I wouldn’t be excited about but I think it would not surprise me at all if we see other moves that restructure this lineup and this kind of does align with something that I was hearing pre-draft which is that both the ownership group and Jeff Peterson were frustrated with the losing they were a little bit more ready after what happened last season they were a little bit more ready to compete than maybe the second inning of a nine-inninging ball game thing that we’ve been hearing all along that they were getting a little impatient too and I think that that makes sense like you watch this lineup you were ready to do an evaluation and once again you get hit with the injuries and it’s like at some point you have to say “Okay enough waiting around enough evaluating enough dealing with these injuries we’ve just got to restructure this roster and put a winning product on the floor sooner rather than later.” And I think this is step one actually step one was a draft this is step two
yeah and I think that stuff was kind of out in a public way after a while you know Matt talked about that with us terrence Oglesby talked about how Rick Schnull was ready to win and put that out there like we need to start competing and I think it’s because the noise was so loud from the fans that we just weren’t as patient anymore jeff Peterson as answered a question along those lines when he joined Kyle Bailey after the draft and said “Look we’re talking about this every single day i understand that the fan base is impatient i understand that other regimes have talked about the sim something very similar trying to give them a winning product we’re talking about it every day and doing our very best this is the first time that a move has in my opinion overwhelmingly been in favor of the Hornets upon first review because Doug you know the the way that Utah wins this deal right quote unquote i don’t even know it it’s the argument that you would construct if you wanted to say that Utah wins it but the way that they win it is if Colin Ston’s game goes completely down the toilet to where you’re carrying a negative asset into next off season but even so you only have one more year left and you have a Nerk type contract at that point which that’s all you had to give up to get this person so okay even even there you probably just have an equal value type of trade utah uses this cap space that they’re going to save because this is the last year of Nerkach’s contract it’s two more years left on Colin Ston’s deal so you know Danny A is probably going to do something else right um if he does something else that’s really impressive then maybe you could argue Utah wins it there but if they win it in that vein it doesn’t mean that the Hornets lost because everybody is looking at this and thinking “What the hell that’s all you got for Colin Ston somebody who I think has steadily improved every single year he’s been in the league i think the decision-m has become a lot better from him that was a real weak point for him coming out of Alabama and I despite all the three-point percentages that have improved so much and the points per shot attempt and I won’t you know gloss your eyes over with all these stats except for one more the assist to usage percentage that’s never been higher for him in terms of compared to other guards and it was around one even two years ago I should say i’m just talking about comparatively like he he’s making better decisions on ball even with him turning it over just a little bit colin has become I think a guy that isn’t thought about as a good player as much because of what his reputation used to be kind of a good stats bad team guy you go to Utah for your reputation to die n man if you’re paying attention Colin is a good player and now we have a backup point guard with a lot of juice to him in a way that we have not had in god forever i I just we have not had a backup point guard with this kind of juice in in since Jeremy Lynn probably in the playoff year
i I legitimately don’t understand it i’ve been texting David Lock of Locked on Jazz and founder of the network and he is processing the deal as we speak and and trying to figure it out all out the only thing that I can think
is that the Jazz know that they are going to be lottery hunting next season they’re going to be lottery ball hunting again and so and they’re going to be giving a lot of shots to Ace Bailey and so they had to get rid of the one guy that was soaking up all the shots and probably helping them a little bit too much to win i think this was just about getting worse and I think there’s some questions about Walker Kesler’s future there and so if if they can if if something happens there well now you have Yousef Nerkage to at least again do something at the center position i do feel I do feel bad for Yousef because I think Ysef wants to play on a winner like I think he’s a
he told you no look I asked him during Eggtoday interviews what’s most important to you as a member of a team he said minutes straight up he said there’s a lot that goes into it but it’s minutes that was his answer and
okay maybe not then maybe not maybe he’s good with it then maybe he’s okay all right he wants He wants to play he wants to play
all right so let’s uh go out to the chat uh here on YouTube and um
Yeah let me scroll scroll scroll
let’s hear from the sickos what’s up sickos
yeah I mean a lot of people love this deal i don’t know that I’ve seen one single person uh not love this deal all right
yeah i’m trying to think you know you can gather him just a little bit i’ll make a you know it’s not going to be rapid fire but the case against it the case against it is what that we try too hard to conform Colin Ston to the offense and he’s uncomfortable in this system
that you just drafted Khan Canipple and would this mess with him in in some way
yeah so you take away uh Khan Caniple minutes once the Liam McNeely trade is official it will be official we’re talking it into existence knock on wood once the Liam thing is official people might argue wait why is our first round pick in in Greensboro and not playing over Colin Ston um you know I I don’t think Colin is a catch andoot guy necessarily like he’s not somebody that I envision playing off ball a ton i I think he can you know like you you skip pass Colin can attack closeouts and again the the shot is pretty good from what he’s done the last couple of years again 39% uh you know up to 41% this past year people will question the assist to turnover ratio with him it’s not good i did talk about the assist to turnover uh excuse me the assist to usage percentage that was uh very good or it was better this season he’s gotten better the last couple of years just think though man he’s passing to guys that are playing for a team that’s actively tanking so you know there there’s a lot on his shoulders does he become even more efficient does the decision-m become more efficient as he’s distributing to guys that you feel good about shooting on the perimeter uh yeah i I I it’s tough it’s tough to make the case against throwing Nerkich out of the organization and welcoming a backup point guard with a lot of firepower all right uh Woohoo TV likes this move says “Sexton is a hooper i see the vision um we’ve got hard hoopers gritty defenders and three-point shooters hornets DNA i finally see it um H8 Davis says “It looks like the Hornets missed out on Lonzo.” So Lonzo got moved for Isaac Agoro that was just a one toone swap between Cleveland and Chicago
uh two guys that we certainly have talked about both of those players for sure
and they get swapped for one another
um and then someone here there’s there appears to be a little bit of a Lonzo Ball argument breaking out uh then you have this from Turtlemaster 4 how we feeling about this lineup ston LaMelo Ball
Coniple and Caulk Briner how we feeling about that lineup
oh just all four of them um I Well I feel so it was all the play on words i feel like Eric Collins is in trouble that he needs to be careful he needs to be very careful
um it’s all we we love We love Eric Collins we want him to remain uh in in the seat so he’s got to be very careful here he’s got a he’s got a fine line to tow particularly if the Hornets go 19 wins again because late in the season that’s when things get a little choppy they’re they’re hunting for things they’re fishing for things they’re trying to keep their energy up and sometimes and they and not a lot of people are watching so it can get a little goosey just be careful here well and and remember when Colin Ston was selected by the Cavs and they had Darius Garland we tried to relationship name their back court and we called him Sex Land when LaMelo and Colin share the floor there’s all sorts of runchy nicknames that you can give to that relationship on the court between LaMelo and Colin Ston so I’ll let you guys think of those nicknames maybe maybe another case against this real quickly because we do we do need to talk about this maybe for quite some time
cuz we’re fair
we’re fair the case against it too is well I liked Nerkich enough to just not get rid of a big man that we already had on the roster and now we have Musa Dabbate and we have Ryan Caulkrunner well okay that doesn’t make me not like the trade what it does force you to do is look for at least one other name out there on the market and they’re going to they have to add another big guy it has to happen because as much as I would love to leave the gate open for that beautiful big strong massive energetic moose to run free you can only let him run free for so long and then you got to put him back into the fence what I would or back behind the fence what I would say is Kulch Brener Musa you got two different styles of center that’s great ryan Caulkrren is older than your typical rookie coming into the league okay that’s nice you still need a veteran center here Doug that you can really have as an innings eater almost like just as somebody that can be serviceable as a big brute to play against and they don’t have that guy anymore nerkich was that guy that was going to play quite a bit and then you would deploy Musa and Caulk Briner during matchups whenever you deemed fit now I I don’t know if it’s a big move at center i don’t know if it’s just hey let’s just go get a vet that again plays 25 minutes a night but you do need somebody like that on the roster and and that that’s what this move does force you to do
like Andre Drummond is it still get out of here Andre Drummond or is it now get in here Andre Drummond
get in here it’s a it’s a different era it’s a totally different era there are different possibilities now with Jeff Peterson at the helm uh so because a lot of people in the chat are asking like what are the free agent names u available and I think so again you’re dealing with what can you get for $14.1 million a year or less so you’ve got that exception and then you’ve got uh 5 something or other by annual exception and so like I think guys like Yabiselli they’re going to make more than 14.1 Mo Vagner Clank Capella i just take the big names i think LA is going to go after Brook Lopez somehow in some kind of sign and trade with uh Milwaukee because they’ve got issues with getting things done miles Turner I think he’s just going to end up back in Indiana
and it’s going to cost 30 right i mean like Well that again that would be a signing trade you’d be dealing with sending them stuff and I don’t know that they want to do that u
they’re just trying to keep Ben Matan I would think like I I hope they don’t salary dump right that that’s the question salary dump miles or math i don’t want to do that so just keep him luke Cornett yeah that’s the guy
then at least you know that Cornet the Hornet killer is in your camp you cannot be killed by Luke Cornett any longer
uh I I I think 14.1 I think the full mid level that that could get it done for Cornette for sure
oh it that Well it definitely could right am I wrong like I Luke Cornet seems like everybody’s favorite third string center how many how much do people like him as the backup/starter i think we’d still like him as a backup as a starter
boston certainly valued him i’ll tell you that from listening to John Carales all year long on locked on NBA like they really valued his presence underneath the basket i mean
no for sure it’s just like you know they were
Yeah he was a third string center he He was getting minutes in a playoff playoff game though he was getting getting
Regulator said Mason Plumbley is an unrestricted free agent i thought you were laughing at Cornette yeah Mason Plumbley bring him back so so you you either bring back the lefty jumper or the guy in Luke Cornet who jumps at the dunker spot to block shots and alter your vision when shooting from the corner um yeah look they they got to make some move and I don’t know what they’re going to do out there but those are some of the free agents that you bring up and they’re going to have to be wise or maybe they swing big with all these guards just the Trey man stuff i know Jeff Peterson said he was a priority i I did believe him it just made sense that was the default answer that you would bring him back it made sense to say it but you mentioned that they were in on Tai Jerome
there was a report from Mark Stein that said the Hornets are now out of the Chris Paul sweep stakes but the word now I think means that they were once in and now it looks like Chris might want to go play closer to home there was that report too wanting to go out to LA so if they were in on Tai Jerome they were in on Chris Paul those are backup point guard style guys where Ty Jerome can kind of go both i I do wonder man like the Trey man thing I don’t think it’s 100% that he’s not on the roster but you certainly have a lot more doubt now that you trade for someone making $19 million daniel Gaffford another name he just signed an extension with the Mavericks but I’ll tell you this uh and this is again what my work on Locked on NBA I just listen to all these shows and they they get into all of these details what makes this network so great the interesting thing about the Danny Gaffford deal is the way that so it I think it was originally reported as a total $60 million deal by Shams and then they had to go back and like correct that because I think it’s like for three or four million less doesn’t sound like a lot but it makes him still tradable there’s some rule I don’t I don’t know the exact rule but essentially Daniel Gaffford it’s just under the line that makes it still tradable after the extension and so a lot of people were thinking oh Gaffford to LA you know would there be some kind of trade to get uh to get the Lakers a center but Danny Gaffford can go anywhere so um yeah that they’ve got a lot of big they’ve got a lot of big men
there um in Dallas so that’s certainly a possibility as well
i I’ve always been a huge Daniel Gaffford fan uh we got to see him score what was it 40 i think it was more close to 30 but on Mark Williams that was among the the games where Mark had that rough rough stretch where he was allowing 40 to everybody i I would love for Gaffford to score 40 in a Hornets uniform yeah really that’s the big question now it center and it they’ve done this a couple times to themselves right it’s they trade Mark Williams okay now you only have Yousef Nerkage
they’ve done that a bunch of times they’ve done that about They’ve traded Mark Williams a bunch of times
yes they’ve done that too so now you only have Musa and Nerkage and Musa is even kind of like a power forward center hybrid then they draft Ryan Caulkrren okay cool all right I’d still like a veteran center but these three guys okay I I’d be fine going into the season with them now you trade Nerkich and now you need to find the other guy because clearly you can’t go in like this yeah I think it’s more if they do go for a center I think it’s more likely that it’s some kind of sign and trade situation and not and I don’t think it would be for big dollars but I I think it would be that maybe rather than the $14 million but you could do a little bit more but again you’re up against that tax so $22 million really total to play with according to Bobby Marks so it can’t be too much higher if you want to make some other moves as well although I honestly like when you look at the there are a lot of guys on this roster right now you know between the four picks you know so I I don’t know that there are a ton of moves that they can make but I think they could certainly shuffle some things up via a signing trade so that’s where that’s where things get interesting we’ve got to monitor the AOI thing but people on this chat they’re super excited um because the Hornets are finally finally doing something
okay one other thing all right i I keep saying one other thing and then there’s not going to be enough meat to on the bone to eat tomorrow but
we’re up to 2,000 views baby let’s keep it going this is going to pay for my kids college
well keep it coming tell a friend tell a friend to tune in right now you know another big reason to go after Colin Ston and somebody this dynamic i’m reminded of what we had um what we talked about last year do you just spend a decent amount of money on a backup point guard because LaMelo has not shown himself to be healthy that’s a big part of this that we have not mentioned that’s a big part of it that we haven’t mentioned so now let’s just say
you know unfortunately LaMelo suffers another injury now you have like again a a real dynamic player at point guard when LaMelo goes down and we are disappointed we hate seeing it but at least you have somebody in Colin that can now play alongside Brandon Miller and now Brandon Miller can continue to grow even when LaMelo goes down instead of having to rely on KJ Simpson and Wendell Moore and all the G-League backup minutes the big difference here though is their style of play right like Colin and LaMelo are very different type of players and that’s something to consider we had this conversation a little bit with Chris Paul are you okay bringing a backup point guard in that is so different than what your starting point guard is my answer to that is no i actually like the contrast in style i think it puts pressure on opposing defenses i like the fact that you can play both of these guys together because LaMelo is so malleable he can play alongside Colin maybe more so than Colin can play alongside a LaMelo if that makes sense maybe not but you get the idea lamelo is the malleable piece in all of it so it when Colin is on ball running the show it’s going to look a lot different than what uh the offense looks like with LaMelo on ball running the show but you can still do a bunch of fun stuff with them on the floor at the same time even if it looks different with Colin running the second unit or the starter unit when LaMelo’s out it’s still going to look competent so different but competent it is still competent and I’ll take it
yeah I think it’s it’s interesting because I do think there are more moves and so we really can’t even talk about what those second uh unit dynamics are because I don’t even know if we fully know what the second unit’s going to look like well the other thing you you said that that’s one thing we haven’t talked about the other thing that we haven’t talked about which is you brought now a point guard shooting guard combo guard who was starting for another team bring him over here does that signal a possible bigger move which would be trading LaMelo Ball i don’t think it does i think they’re committed to seeing this thing out for another season with LaMelo Ball but here’s what I also think i’m ready to see anything at this point i am ready uh for a full reshuffleling of this roster because one move makes anything possible once you start to use every available tool in your tool belt now anything is possible with the right urgency and the right will i I don’t think they’re ready to leap off that cliff yet but also like if I wake up if I take another nap I maybe I just go need to go to sleep again but if I take another nap and and that happens I would still be I would be very surprised but now I wouldn’t be shocked
you know you know what this looks like to me cuz it it it’s hard to figure out as to why Utah
would not look for anything else more than what they Danny A is now gone it’s it’s a son it’s Austin Age now see Danny Ah there was reportedly he stepped back he’s letting his his son uh do this thing now and now you know look first move son what have you done what have you done son um I wonder is this just the Ang looking at everybody’s payroll and seeing what contract is closest to Colin Ston and seeing oh Nerkich is making almost identical money let’s just trade for the guy that’s making identical money except for one less year let’s go after that guy here’s the second round pick here’s Colin Ston we want Nerkage because it’s identical let’s just go ahead and do it and the other reason is after they see that contract how much does Jeff Peterson’s networking prowess grease the wheels on some of these trades that we’ve seen so often those those are just some thoughts floating around in my brain
no son listen to me Austin you don’t trade with the Hornets you ask for everything and then when they laugh at you and reject you you go to the media and you say that you gave them a Godfather offer and they refuse that that’s what you do son you don’t actually trade with the Charlotte Hornets and give them something of value why have I taught you have I taught you nothing
where’s Sam where where’s some of these Boston reporters we need to get the word out sam where where you at all right i’m trying trying to figure out how to spread this message anyways you need to get him on speed dial son i thought you were calling me son for a second i was like that’s a different approach on the podcast
austin H runs the show now in in in Utah for his for his father
final thoughts before we end today’s show what you got
jeff Peterson ain’t no Mitch i’m going to stick with that it was my first thought it’s going to be my last thought he ain’t no Mitch got a backup point guard folks hey last time we had Last time we had a great backup point guard what happened what happened the last time the Hornets got a great backup point guard what happened

  1. Sexton is a starting guard, stop referring to him as a backup guard.Y’all just got the most underrated player in the league. He’s not coming off the bench just not happening

  2. With all these injuries in the nba and lamelo, it makes sense to load up on solid guards and let lamelo have a load management schedule to try to keep him healthy throughout the season. That’s what I think they will do and it makes sense.

  3. One thing this trade does for sure signals Vasa Micic won't be on this roster next season. It also gives the Hornets leverage re-signing Tre Mann. Hornets should jump on Day'Ron Sharp now a free agent to round out their center rotation.

  4. Like Sexton alot ..and this is a good trade . WHY? I think you both ignore probably the biggest reasons the Hornets did this. Lamelos propensity to be hurt. Sexton plays the backup pt guard, and it is not an if Ball gets hurt its when. And when he does, we have a legit point . At this point we only have rookie Kalbrenner as our Big. Why some are putting Diabate at center is not a BIG…he is a PF clearly. We need a starting center.

  5. Show love to the Young bull. he has really grown with utah – 3pt shot has developed – more awareness with his passing . still get tunnel vision driving in the lane a bit but he'll hit a lot of tough shots like that. He is a G i think him and Kon will bounce of each other well and hopefully they both learn a bit of each others game. Kon is nice smart pick. GL guys

  6. Hornets pickpocketed the Jazz with this trade 😂.

Not a full on robbery, but a minor theft 😂

  7. I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop here. And as a sicko that makes me real nervous. Could they be shopping LaMelo? Sexton’s been a starter his whole career. Maybe they are taking him as backup, I sure hope so. And giving up Nurkic makes me worry Mark’s coming back lol.

  8. CHA fan from Durham LETs gooo this team COuld be crazyyy fast. LOved the draft SION BEtter play 30 minutes or more we NEeded defense ANd shooting ANd they addressed both of those I’m sooooo happy🔥🔥
