a bucket and a pop breakaway IO oh meet me at the rim and don’t be late give me a hot shot did you not get the memo derek B can go upstairs oh this the steal wait for the lead big time big time skinny for the win my god i cannot believe this improbable all right everybody the pick is in the Bulls got a guy that Stacy and I were both very excited about he is 6’10 inch forward from France Noah Essen he’s going to be a guy that is going to take a little bit of time to develop but you love his athletic potential really off the charts stacy I’ve seen all kinds of comparisons uh Pascal Seakum is one Scott even compared him to Scotty Pippen with his athleticism and his ability to run the court what do you think about the pick
i think it’s a great pick i think it’s good value at 12 uh you know a lot of people thought the Bulls were going to take a guard i was praying that they wouldn’t take a guard uh so you know to be able to get a kid who’s the second youngest player in the draft has a huge upside and and you know you’re talking about a Bulls team that you know they have one foot in rebuild one foot in we don’t want to rebuild you know what I’m saying so they’re kind of in you know in the middle and you know they like to call it basketball purgatory but they’re reloading with young talent you know and they’ve already got young talent on the roster i think he right now defensively Mark and I said this on our Give Me the Hot Sauce podcast show defensively he’s ready to play right now you know he can go out there and and play one through four uh he’ll be able to switch on defense he can get out and run in transition he’s a type of player that Josh Giddy will love to play with with him and Modis you have two young forwards that can get out in the open court and run cause havoc with their defense this is a kid I think Bulls fans are going to be excited for i think they don’t know him right now they don’t know who he is right now but if you follow the French basketball uh program and you see Wimby and you see the kids in Atlanta you know these guys were all lottery picks now this whole French young team come together they’ve been playing together since they were little kids so those guys are coming over to the States right now they they took the dream team to to the brink of elimination and so this is this is a a French you know international team that I think in the next Olympics they could win the whole thing
and right now he as you mentioned he’s the second youngest player in the draft next to Cooper Flag 18 and a half years old but he measured in at 610 he’s a guy that can play that small forward position you’ve got versatility now with Modis who can play either forward spot you still got Patrick Williams who can play either forward spot and Julian Phillips so now all of a sudden you got a deeper front court billy wants to play fast and these guys can run with Josh Giddy and and Lonzo Ball and catch lobs as you mentioned and really be forces on the fast break
well you hit the nail on the head Mark they got more depth now at the wing position one of the things that the Bulls lacked was quality depth you know with long athletic wings you know you know being able to draft Modis last year you know people say it was luck you know him falling all the way down to 11 the Bulls were able to get him but you saw what he brought to the table when they gave him consistent minutes uh this kid is a future star in this league and you want to surround him with other you know playmakers guys that can make his job easier and that’s what you have in Josh Giddy that’s what you have in Kobe White Lonzo Ball you know the Bulls have a surplus of young talent that they didn’t have you know say two years ago you know I do the G- League games and and Modis played once down there and and and people were like when is he going to get his opportunity and once he got a chance to play regularly he wasn’t going anywhere you know now he’s labeled himself as a foundation piece i think SNA may get some minutes in the G-League to start off as he tries to develop because he is so young and so raw well one you know I like to joke a lot you know the best defense M has faced this year was Billy Donovan billy Donovan had him on lockdown the first half of the season bringing him along slowly you know not getting consistent minutes and then when the trade happened they started freeing up some some minutes for him i think you’re going to see you know some something like that with Noah in the first half i mean that’s been Billy’s track record since he’s been here as a coach he did it with uh you know IO when I came in and I was an experienced player it wasn’t like he was a one-year player you know he spent you know his whole career at Illinois and he had to fight and scrap to get in playing time and he didn’t play like the first I want to say the first 15 or 20 games of the season he wasn’t even getting any run at all so Billy is tough on rookies um I think that what’s going to get him on the floor quicker and I’ve always said this and I used to tell I this what’s going to get these guys on the floor quicker as rookies is the understanding of NBA defense understanding where you’re supposed to be in rotations what the defensive scheme calls for when do we switch when we don’t switch that’s been the big the hardest thing for for any rookie to come in and and and really grasp NBA defense because you’re used to playing zone you’re used to staying on your man you’re not switching as much uh you’re starting to see a little bit more Mark in college basketball where guys are switching a little bit more the good teams are learning how to switch but that’s not a you know when you see big guys big guys are not comfortable doing that we’ve got we’ve got some big guys now mus can switch you know uh San can I mean these guys can all switch and it’ll make the Bulls a better defensive team yeah it’s going to be interesting to see how that all pans out so we look forward to summer league the reports are that he’s going to go back overseas to finish up with his team in Germany and then he’ll be here for summer league so we’ll get a chance to see what he can do at that point some of the early developments in round one before we wrap things up the one big story uh the power play by Ace Bailey he was trying to steer himself to the Washington Wizards and Danny A in Utah said “Screw that i’m taking you at five i’ll get used to being in Salt Lake City.” Well the these young players man they’re you know this is a whole different league now you know this NIL has created kind of a monster where guys are getting paid a lot of money they feel like you know they can dictate where they want to go this is a business and and then for Ace Bailey who’s a very talented young player probably has all-star you know potential later on down the road for him to to not go work out and interview with teams it was an injustice to himself it cost himself probably you know being a top three pick he still went five he’s too good of a talent to pass up and I and I think Utah recognized that um I think if Utah doesn’t draft him you know maybe Washington drafts him down the line maybe that was the play don’t go work out for anybody we’ll pick you when we come up um and if Washington was doing that what they probably should have did was trade up to guarantee that they were going to get him so they they were playing the long game thinking “Oh it’s gonna scare teams off because here’s a kid with 18 years old with attitude.” but it backfired because Utah recognizes like hey this kid is too talented to pass on at five and they drafted him
speaking of trading up New Orleans traded a 2026 first round pick which could be a really good one to move up 10 spots they took Derek Queen right after the Bulls made their selection derek Queen has gotten mixed reviews a guy that can score good low post scorer in college but he’s a little bit undersized to play center in the pros and he may be one of those guys that has that high bust factor but New Orleans went all in to get him and some Bulls fans are saying “Well we should have taken Queen.”
Well and you know listen at the end of the day the kid is a talented kid he was on that Mount Verdie team with Cooper Flag and I mean Ace Newell all these these kids that are going to be in the draft right now um he’s got a huge upside he’s a great rebounder great offensive rebounder he may be a little bit undized but where he makes up for that Mark is he got high basketball IQ they call him the the baby yach uh that’s a compliment they give him um you know I think what happens when you go to some of these workouts uh they look at a kid and say “Okay look at his body it’s not where you know he looks like he’s he’s out of shape or you know if he he can be out of shape and we have to worry about that.” And they overthink things they most of these organizations overthink things it’s like “What’s the eye test what did he do at the high school level what did he do as his first year in college he dominated.” So you got to keep that in mind a lot of these guys you know they love him during the school year Mark but then when they have a chance to talk to him and they pick him apart then they start to question whether he’s as good as they thought he was when we saw him say in January
last thing before we wrap it up the Bulls almost got really lucky the seven foot center from Duke Kaman Maluatch was dropping he was all the way down to 10 when the Phoenix Suns who got him that pick from Houston in the Kevin Durant trade they went in and grabbed him then they made a trade with Charlotte for Mark Williams so all of a sudden a Phoenix team that was all guards now has a couple of centers they can rely on mal watch at 71 a shot blocker who who has a nice shooting touch he might he might have looked nice in a Bulls uniform he almost got there mark I was sitting there watching it and I’m like oh my goodness like Houston doesn’t need him because they got Sangun so I’m thinking okay they’re going to pass on they’re going to go probably get you know Ace Newell or Queen or someone that can play power forward alongside Sangun and I’m like there’s no way and then Portland already has Clling on and and and they have also they also have uh Deontay Aiden so they don’t need him either so I’m like okay he’s gonna fall right to the Bulls and we’ll big man for the next 10 years but the basketball gods didn’t bless us and they said we we gave y’all something last year wait till next year maybe maybe we’ll get lucky next year Mark and we’ll get in those top two picks maybe win the number one pick if if Adam Silver is listening listen you help Dallas out we know what you did we know what you did
i thought the Bulls are making I thought the Bulls are making the playoffs next year they won’t even be in the lottery listen listen Mark mark I don’t know about all that all I know is
next year’s draft is supposed to be better than this year’s draft i know and there’s a bunch of game changers in that in that draft there’s three or four players that are really big time players and if you want to be if you if if if it’s a year to be bad next year’s a year to be bad
well the Bulls have one more pick coming up they will have the number 45 overall pick on Thursday don’t be surprised if they take an international guy that they can just stash because the roster is really crowded right now and they really don’t have room for another young guy so we’ll see what happens on Thursday
and then also you know Javon Carter just you know opted into his player options so that also throws a wrinkle into it i don’t think the Bulls are done making any kind of making some moves i I think they’re they’re waiting to see what their draft situation was they probably tried to you know see if they could move up in the draft to get a higher pick um teams probably said no but you know you still got Visas out there you know you got Lonzo Ball’s contracts very friendly i don’t think the front offense is done all right so free agency begins starting next week we’ll see if the Bulls make any moves there make sure to follow us every week with brand new episodes of the Give Me the Hot Sauce podcast for Stacy i’m Mark thanks for tuning in does anybody know how to post videos to Facebook that’s a huge three lonzo Lo able to swerve bend that corner that’s the last time I’m going to say it williams straight on look out [Applause]
