it’s official One of the Boston Celtics that had a team option will be brought back here by Brad Stevens And this is a very intriguing piece for the Celtics as they still look to potentially shed some salary and get involved into some free agency moves So what does this mean for the team and JD Davidson the G-League standout that absolutely deserves this contract now going into a system with Joe Mazula for the full season we’ll be diving and exploring all of that and more on this episode of Celtics Digest I am Bruce Vez and you guys have been absolutely fantastic You guys have been showing uh with the deadline for JD JDavidson being today I definitely is going to be interesting to dive in and explore what this means for the Celtics So without further ado let’s get into that Make sure to grab that snack and let’s explore this very nice contract for JD Davidson and the Boston Celtics here as they had a little bit of a deadline coming into today but made it known that they would be picking up that they would be picking up JDavidson’s option for next season and it will be non-garanteed preserving some flexibility for both sides For JDavidson we all know him as a main Celtics standout for these last couple of seasons drafted in um from Alabama and had a lot to work on with this game but was able to showcase his ability to be a creator going down to the basket in Maine also being a fantastic passer Steeler and guy on getting steals on the defensive end and much more He has multiple records for the main Celtics and those are going to stand pat I do believe for a while because for the Celtics in my opinion he should have already been called up or had a spot at the end of the bench but since they had so many guard so much guard depth with you know having guys like Derek White Drew Holiday Payton Pritchard and even before that having guys like before they got Drew Holiday and Marcus Smart and Malcolm Brogden There was never an opportunity for a guy in JD Davidson to really get up there and compete for the Celtics until this year right and even last year dating back on the channel if you dive in I was vocalizing how he should have gotten a spot at the end of the rotation Now name Kada was the one that eventually got it which was still good But for JD Davidson this time did shine He got to play for the Celtics for some times at the end of the year and even though didn’t get to make a key impact I think is well deserving of sticking in the NBA go to show you goes to show you how hard JD Davidson has worked putting in those hours grinding in the G- League to eventually get to the spot and the Celtics are rewarding him with that by keeping him on the team by picking up his team option But the interesting part with all of this is that it is nong guaranteed Now JD Davidson when he signed this contract this was going to be known that if he did pick it up it would be non-g guaranteed and this is something to look at As I said I love this for JDavidson It’s a great opportunity for him in the back court but also it could be used down the line in a potential move for the Boston Celtics if it comes to plan with them regardless if it’s a trade that could help them with some flexibility or potentially even taking some contracts on it Waving a guy in JD Davidson could also help out Now I don’t see Brad Stevens and the Celtics waving him I would see them you know trading him to a different team to give him that opportunity and either taking back no salary in return or you know taking back a salary and waving that salary similar to what the Thunder did yesterday with trading away Dylan Jones for Kobe Jones But for JD Davidson to start off the season he’s going to have some opportunities As the Celtics we do know have Derrick White in this back court have Pton Pritchard in this back court now have JD Davidson alongside of them Baylor Shyman There’s still some question marks revolving around Anthony Simons as the reports and rumblings have come through that the Celtics will still look to potentially shed Anthony Simons’s contract to drop below and shed and to drop more money and hopefully try to get below the first apron into the tax threshold so they can have the money to offer the non-ax midlevel to Luke Cornet and can lock him up long term alongside Alford That is what the Celtics are prioritizing over these next couple of days And we do have a little bit of an update around Al Horford as well that we’ll get into here regarding for the Celtics future But that’s where contracts like George’s Nang get a little bit weird right or maybe Sam Hower I know that some reports have led now to believe that Samar will be staying with the Celtics because of the trades that they were able to do which is nice but maybe they try to trade Anthony Simons Maybe they try to trade George’s Nang Maybe they look to move off of one of these guys that is that’s a big that’s at the end of their rotation right xavier Tilman or Neuscada so they can go and pursue another big if they do lose Luke Cornet or Al Worford like I mentioned there’s going to be a lot of discussion still revolving around this Celtics team but for JD Davidson kind of now in this rotation here being the fifth guard currently but most likely with Anthony Simons being on the way out being that fourth guard in that rotation could see himself logging some backup point guard minutes through some stretches or even with some injuries if the Celtics do bolster their guard room could be still someone that they see in flashes here and there We saw guys like Drew Peterson and Necada on those two-way contracts with Joe Mazoula get uptake and get some run when the Celtics were healthy So imagine with Jason Tatum being out and with this roster being a little bit shaky now with no Porzingis and no Drew how many opportunities are going to be available for these young guys it seems like guys like Shyman JD Davidson Jordan Walsh Sam Hower are going to have those opportunities to really thrive in this Celtic system And if they can right and they can stand pat throughout the top tier the top half of the season then the Celtics will keep them We’ll still you know work out their contracts and try to figure that out But potentially if the Celtics are contending and those guys aren’t panning out maybe they do look to flip them Ultimately like I mentioned the Celtics main goal is to get underneath into that first apron They’ve achieved goal one which was getting out of the second apron currently right now now with JD being brought back think they’re roughly around if you add that $2 million contract 205 but take away the 32 uh round pick value so I would say probably 204ish right now 203 204 so still underneath that second apron here for the Boston Celtics with still that flexibility right of Anthony Simons $25 million expiring deal George’s Nang $8 million expiring deal Sam Hower’s contract and also the expirings of Xavier Tilman as well I do think the Celtics got those second picks and trading back for a reason for additional moves down the line and who knows that could be striking any moment with this team As you know Brad Stevens likes to get busy on those phones But before we sign out because today is obviously the contract update days as everything is surrounding around that We did see JD Davidson come to play for the Celtics but as we all know Horford Cornet and Tory Craig alongside Drew Peterson are all free agents And we did see this from Adam Himls box saying told Al Horford continues to mold potential options for next season and at the moment appears unlikely to have a final decision on the first day of free agency tomorrow And yep free agency does start tomorrow at 600 PM Eastern Teams will be allowed to negotiate with opposing players to kind of feel that out Now the free agency pool I’m not going to lie ladies and gentlemen isn’t that spectacular And once again for a Celtics team that is in the second apron isn’t going to have a lot of money to get those kind of contracts brought in So keep an eye out on them on the trade market into tonight going into tomorrow because they want to have that flexibility to offer a guy like Luke Cornet that contract right away But if they cannot and they lose Luke Cornet potentially lose Al Horford this team still is going to need some help in the center department So looking to trade a guy like Anthony Simons for a center maybe in the long as a filler center or potentially to get some salary off so they can go out inside one of the other centers that are still available could be something the Celtics do But ultimately Brad Stevens is the man to trust and what Brad Stevens does do I will believe in Last year or two seasons ago when they made the moves to get Porzingis and the moves to get Drew I ultimately wasn’t the biggest fan of the Christophs Porzingis deal and look how it changed the Celtics team I have to put my trust in Brad Stevens and I will put my trust in Brad Stevens that he will get the Celtics to that land of promise once back again Even if this year is a little bit of a middling year we’ll be okay with that So how will the Celtics be able to manage these things and try to get some back of their free agents well we’ll have to stay tuned and check up with the latest updates as like I mentioned free agency starts tomorrow and I wouldn’t expect maybe all the bigname free agents to go Maybe the Celtics do make some moves tomorrow but if they don’t if they lose guys if they bring in guys we will have really do like him for this Celtic squad Even though he’s a young untapped piece I don’t think necessarily he’s going to pan out and be this all come superstar who could be some depth guy for the Celtic squad especially in a season with injuries that can kind of fill out for them as a downhill threat being able to go aggressive to the basket His three-point shot has developed pretty solidly as well in the G-League He’s a pretty decent passer as well Has that hustle and heart that the Celtics love on the defensive end and I think he’s just someone that’s just very deserving of getting this contract So even if he’s not going to be playing that much I do wish JD Davidson a big congratulations on getting this deal and I hope he has a great time in the green and white next season So let me
