BREAKING: Philadelphia 76ers Select VJ Edgecombe 3rd Overall | REBOUND for Philly?

the pick is in the philadelphia 76ers have made a selection in the 2025 nba draft i’m tanisha batist joined now by host of locked on 76ers mark farzetta and the sixers have selected bj edgecomb shooting guard out of baylor with the number three pick mark is this where you thought the sixers would go at three yeah keith pompeo who i do the show with of course on locked on 76ers we ended the show with our desire versus our prediction our desire was ace bailey a guy that i think in this draft who was going to be available at that point would be the have the best nba career of all these guys but the prediction was that the sixers are going to take vj edgecomb the reason he was not the desire is because he is as good as i think he’ll be in his nba career right now there’ll be some small steps forward he’ll continue to be a great athlete he’ll continue to be a more than willing defender a a flatout very good defender already and he got he has to improve his shooting the athleticism is going to be there uh the the aggression will be there in attacking the rim but that’s who he will be in five years ace bailey could be into perennial all-star by that time so i just look at it as the sixers made the very very safe pick i like a lot of things about vj edgecomb the only thing i don’t like is that i don’t think i’ll have the same nba career that an ace bailey will have
sounds like you think bj was is more of the person with the floor the high floor if you will but ace bailey more of that high ceiling and certainly like you said it could be one of those where let’s just be real about it we know all the reports that have come out of recent with canceled workouts and uh declining workouts etc about ace bailey and ultimately mark it sounds like maybe and i’m sure we’ll hear more in the days to come but maybe the sixers just said thanks no thanks to the potential drama
yeah and the another narrative that started to get out there as well was that a gm that’s going to take ace bailey or in the sixers case a president of basketball operations in daryl my ace bailey is a gm that is safe in their job that feels safe and secure in their job that is not daryl moore that is not who we’re looking at right now in philadelphia so i i my also my prediction was also went into it was the idea that he needed to have somebody that he knows could help him right now lessome project certainly and someone that i do but here’s one thing i love about ace bailey and has nothing to do with what’s uh what the stats or anything like that it’s everything to do with the the mentality that he has this guy loves the game of basketball there is no doubt that he loves the game of basketball and not what the game of basketball brings him for instance so that’s one thing i could say for sure you can at least have a sigh of relief in philadelphia about is you can’t doubt the mindset and determination of vjo yeah yeah and i tell you you look at some of the things that maybe helped him to become or helped him to improve his not just the approach to the game as far as physicality but also the mentality after a revealing summer playing alongside nba players for his bahamas national team you kind of really started to see where he could go where he could grow and of course a strong season at baylor finding ways for him to improve in some areas maybe as a secondary ball handler if you will but what are some of the areas let’s let’s just start with the good what are some of the things that as you kind of alluded to already that you really like about him but what are some of the things where you’re saying “hey the sixers need you to improve this immediately?”
oh i mean it overall i think it’s uh slot selection when when it comes to his offensive game i mean the the the ability to attack the rim is is right there i mean you talk about being nba ready in that regard it’s right there you talk about again being more than a willing defender being a very good defender with a defensive-minded head coach uh like nick nurse then that’s one thing that they’re going to tee off on immediately but when it comes to improvement i think about shot selection i think about overall court vision if the sixers need to him to take over a a point guard role at all in the near future here tyrese maxi of course more of a guard he had the transition to more of the point guard responsibilities and now you’re looking at vj edgecom having to make sure that he takes that big leap forward when it comes to his overall offensive game he did say something before the draft during the uh last night as a matter of fact that the uh the draft eve if you will media sessions where he just said the sixers and i basically feel like we’re on the same page when it comes to the defensive aspect of the game that’s great the sixers have had somebody in the not too distant past named matise thyel that was a very good defender had no offensive game whatsoever unfortunately and never really developed that here in philadelphia and look i’m i’m hoping he does in his nba career but i think a guy like vj edgecomb comes to the nba already with a great mindset as far as attacking the rim so that’s something that you can look at with him coming into the nba and being ready to play in that regard the step forward overall uh slot um shot selection uh when it comes to his nba career well mark i know the sixers want him to hit the ground running because they say that the east is wide open of course with the unfortunate injury to tyrese hallebert with the knicks still in a kurfuffle about who’s going to be at the helm with the departure of tom tibido it’s going to be interesting to see if the sixers and bj edgecom can take advantage and actually make some noise in the east this upcoming season appreciate you mark and of course for continued coverage of bj edgecomb check out locked on 76ers on youtube or wherever you get your podcast part of the locked on podcast network your team every day
