76ers Rumors Before NBA Free Agency On Quentin Grimes, Guerschon Yabusele, Sixers Free Agent Targets
[Music] welcome in to 76ers now i am Jake Chipper nba free agency is just a matter of hours away so on today’s show I’m going to tell you everything you need to know to be ready for 76ers free agency who has accepted their player options guys that decline their options guys that are free agents that Philadelphia needs to bring back and players they could try to target in free agency to bring in and bolster the margins of this roster we’re going through everything here on today’s show so you can be fully informed as we head into tonight’s free agency speaking of free agency we will be live on the channel right here on 76ers now tonight for our live coverage of 2025 NBA free agency we’ll be live about an hour before that kicks off free agency officially begins at 6:00 p.m eastern so we’ll be live around 5:00 p p.m eastern again it is 100% free we’ll be talking Sixers but also talking every single move that is made across the NBA and in free agency so come hang out we’ll have a good time hit that sub button and turn on your notifications so you are notified when we go live you will not miss a thing all right let’s get started with sort of everything that’s happened in the past few days to a week regarding the Sixers and some of their free agents so a lot of players for the Sixers either had player options or they had team options that the player had to accept or decline or that the team had to accept or decline starting with Kelly Ubé had an $ 8.4 $4 million player option that he did accept so he will be returning to Philadelphia next season on that $ 8.4 million number i think it makes a lot of sense obviously a fan favorite someone who plays hard he’s athletic a little bit inconsistent offensively at times but makes sense that he does accept this option don’t think he would have gotten too much more money uh on the open market and the Sixers will be happy to have him back andre Drummond also accepting his player option at about $5 million and makes sense again to me why he would pick that up probably wouldn’t have gotten more than that in the open market in free agency on the Sixers I don’t know if I necessarily want Andre Drummond back on this roster next season i like what Autumn Bon showed in the back half of the year drummond was pretty inconsistent and injured last year i’d rather get a new fresh body and free agency that you can bring in as some backup center depth but as of right now Andre Drummond is returning to Philadelphia a bit of a surprise to some people as Eric Gordon did decline his $3.4 million player option but if you’re watching the show you would have known this wasn’t really a surprise because Eric Gordon because he’s played in the NBA for so long his minimum contract is actually higher than 3.4 million i think it’s about $3.6 million a return to Philadelphia has not been ruled out but with obviously BJ Edgecom being drafted by Philadelphia hopefully Grimes is returning we’ll talk about Quinton Grimes here in just a moment you have Maxi you have McCain i don’t really think I need Edwards back daryl Mory said he wants to get younger get more athletic eric Gordon doesn’t really fit that mold but maybe he does return on a minimum deal he showed some good things around that January mark before he got injured and ended up having to miss the rest of the season then a couple guys who had their team options declined this is up to the Sixers whether they want to bring him back or not lonnie Walker at $2.9 million was obviously signed near the back end of the year this past season and played decently for Philadelphia in pretty limited action but at $2.9 million he will not be returning kind of makes sense sixers really need every dollar they can get at the moment and so Lonnie Walker again in that heavy guard rotation the Sixers already have just have to see him getting minutes same can be said for Jared Butler who also had his team option decline by Philadelphia at about $2.3 million he also won’t be returning i liked what Jared Butler showed in his time with Philadelphia after coming over in that Reggie Jackson trade from the Washington Wizards but unfortunately he will not be returning neither of these guys there’s hasn’t been talks of them possibly coming back so more likely than not they will be hitting the open market and they will probably be heading elsewhere kind of wish they could have figured out a way to keep Butler at $2.3 million but I do understand why that was the decision that was made also if you missed it a pretty big move happening uh just a few days ago for the Sixers regarding Justin Edwards of course a former UDFA from the 2024 NBA draft ended up signing a standard NBA contract with the Sixers when he was really playing phenomenally down the stretch for Philadelphia and he had a team option this offseason philadelphia declined that to give him this new three-year deal according to Shams Gerani reported that a few days ago averaged 10.1 points and uh in 26 minutes excuse me last season from for Philadelphia he will receive two guaranteed years on the new deal so that third year of the deal most likely a player or a team option he’ll earn $2 million next season again after Philadelphia declined his $ 1.9 million option shot 45% from the field 36% from three really those last 20 or so games when he got a chance to prove himself with all the injuries Philadelphia had i thought he did a great job of showing he can make an impact on this team in this rotation and I think getting him at $2 million starting next season is an absolute steal for Philadelphia and glad he you know got some long-term security on this deal and I’m glad the Sixers were able to get what I think is going to be a steal of a contract for the years to come so this is what the roster is looking like as of right now with all the guys that are under contract for Philadelphia this does include the rookie deals of VJ Edgecom and Janai Broom which are not official yet they’re kind of just capold at the moment and we’ll factor that in the salary so they don’t have official deals yet but for all intents and purposes they are on the roster you have Tyrese Maxi BJ Edgecom Paul George Kelly Ub Joel Embiid as well as Jared McCain Ricky Council Justin Edwards Janai Broom Andre Drummond Adam Bona that is what the roster is looking at right now don’t worry too much about where I put guys bjh Gomez is starting to kelly Ubres is starting four just know these are all the guys that are currently under contract for Philadelphia before we head into free agency in just a little bit speaking of heading into free agency what are the Sixers working with in terms of salary cap space and money because it’s a little bit tight for Philadelphia and this is going to be very important when it comes to resigning some of their own guys so right now with all the players on the roster including VJ Edge come Sixers are at about $179.8 million in current salaries that is well over the about $150 million salary cap so they have no salary cap space but they are still under the aprons as of right now they have about $13.6 million under the first apron and about 25.5 under the second apron that second apron number is very very important to monitor especially when you consider how much money Quinton Grimes might get because if the Sixers use the taxpayer mid-level exception on a player for about $5 million they will be hardcapped and cannot go over the second apron so how much money does Quinton Grimes get we’re going to talk about that here in just a second but important to remember about 25 million until that second apron is going to make things tough for Philadelphia as they try to work through some of their contracts now when you talk about what players the Sixers have in free agency guys on the roster last season that are going to be needed to be resigned or moving on to their next team of course Quinton Grimes we talked about he is restricted so the Sixers can match any offer he gets we’ll see how much money he gets there’s reports he’s asking for a little bit of money that we’ll get to here in just a minute gresian Yavelli an unrestricted free agent so the Sixers don’t really have his rights they would have to use an exception to sign him that’s going to be tricky kyle Lowry unrestricted and then Jeff Jeff Doutton Jaylen Hood Shafino also unrestricted free agents as well we’ll see if they end up returning to the team kyle Lowry more and more it kind of seems like he’ll be back for one last season with Philadelphia we know he wants to be back does the team want him back we shall see now we’ll get into all the latest on Grimes on Gershon Yabellle plus some free agent targets for Philadelphia guys they could bring in external free agency to add to this roster and round out their rotation but first we had a great deal going on with our friends at Fanatics right now tyrese maxi jerseys these sick city edition jerseys from this past season are on sale on clearance 50% off they are now just $60 all sizes available right now at chatsports.com50 again 50% off this deal is not going to last forever i imagine they’re going to start going pretty quickly here as people get their hands on these maxi jerseys so if you do not have a Tyrese Maxi jersey or if you want to get the new City Edition jersey that they released this past season you do not have one of those yet now is the best time to go get yourself a Tyrese Maxi jersey again 50% off go to chatsports.com/maxie50 i’ll have that link in the comments and description of today’s show so you just go down click it it’ll take you to Fanatics and you can get your Tyrese Maxi City Edition jersey today all right let’s get to the latest here on Quinton Grimes so officially now a restricted free agent philadelphia tendered that $ 8.7 million qualifying offer on him really just a formality to ensure and make it official that he is a restricted free agent and the Sixers can match any offer he does get now according to Mark Stein this was back a few days ago i believe at the end of last week the Sixers were feeling pretty confident that they could retain Grimes again because they have that restricted tagline they can match anything and they felt like whatever money he get they would be able to match that but then we got a report from Tony Jones of the Athletic and apparently Quinton Grimes looking for $25 plus million on this new deal you go back to what I said about the second apron space only having about 25.5 million that’s going to put the Sixers right up against it so I was hoping Grimes would come in closer to that 17 to 20 million range i understand why he wants to cash out and get this big bag but if he really is demanding $25 million that’s going to really hurt the Sixers in their ability to sign other players this offseason but I don’t think they have a choice i think they kind of have to bring back Grimes cannot lose him for nothing so I do fully expect Quinton Grimes to be back we’ll see what the number ends up being hopefully it’s lower than that $25 million mark because that would again be expensive and really hurt this team’s ability to resign some of their own guys especially Gershan Yabaselli which we’ll get to in a second so we will see but again I do fully expect Grimes to be back i’m not worried about him going to another team the Sixers not matching i think he will return hopefully today as we sit here on day one of NBA free agency predict it for me how much money is Quinton Grimes going to cash out for 25 million 20 million i’m going to guess right now and say he gets $20 million a season average annual value but you predict it for me let me know in the comments section right now now we can get to Gershan Yabaselli of course he’s an unrestricted free agent so the Sixers really are going to have a tough time bringing him back they don’t have any cap space so they’re going to have to use one of the mid-level exceptions if they want to bring him back but unfortunately they can’t really offer much more than the non- taxpayer or excuse me than the taxpayer mid-level exception it’s about $5 and a half million dollars so if another team throws him a bag he’s most likely gone philly Sixers Galaxy had this to report on Twitter the other day that multiple playoff teams specifically from the Western Conference are planning to pursue Gershon in free agency yabasilia has loved playing in Philly there is mutual interest in a reunion but the Sixers have expressed little confidence in their ability to resign him i share that sentiment i am not very confident Philadelphia can bring back Gersian Yabaselli again all the team has to do is really throw him somewhere from 9 to 10 plus million dollars and unless Gershon’s willing to take a discount to play here in Philadelphia he’s probably going to be gone i’m going to guess he ends up in San Antonio playing for the Spurs reuniting with Victor Webbyama of course played with him on the French national team in the Olympics just not enough money for the Sixers because they need to bring back Grimes to bring back Yabasel wish we could have seen him play some meaningful games some meaningful playoff minutes for this team he was one of the most consistent players for Philadelphia last season after they brought him back to the NBA but I understand wanting to get a chance to cash in after he was out of the league for multiple multiple seasons go get your bag Gersian Yoselli i’ll always be rooting for him hopefully they can figure out a way to bring him back but it’s really not too realistic at this point that there’s an avenue for Gershon to return to Philadelphia one last prediction here i do think Kyle Lowry as I briefly mentioned earlier does return to the Sixers he said he wants to play one more season he wants to play that season for the Sixers his hometown team of course and they decline Jared Butler’s option they decline Lonnie Walker’s option they have four guards on the roster assuming they bring back Quinton Grimes but assume they want one more guy in there that kind of fifth guard and I I’m going to guess that’s going to be Kyle Lowry going to be on the veteran minimum of course i kind of wish he would just take a coaching role at this point so they don’t have to use a roster spot on him but makes sense with him wanting to play one more year and the moves Sixers have made up to this point now to round out today’s show we’re going to look at some free agent targets for the Sixers i did a whole extended video on some different free agent targets for for Philadelphia so I’ll kind of go through this a little bit more quickly uh as the Sixers again don’t have too much money to play with so guys they might be able to sign in free agency starting today going to be pretty cheap for that mid-level exception or even for the veteran minimum as they try to find ways to upgrade on the margins that’s kind of how it’s going to be for Philadelphia not quite as big as when they brought in Paul George last off season so a few guys that have really caught my radar and sent out as options for Philadelphia clint Capella is one obviously play for the Atlanta Hawks for a while previously with that the Houston Rockets he is not coming back to the Atlanta Hawks you would think so what is his market like again it’s hard for role players to get as much money as they might deserve because of the new CBA so he might be looking at that mid-level exception number for about $5 million if the Sixers like him better than Drummond I think he’d be a better option than Drummond you could bring him in luke Canard i saw people not loving this option but look he’s not gonna play a whole lot just a specialized skill set off the bench for a cheap contract one of the best three-point shooters in the NBA amir Coffee bit of a doit all wing player for the Clippers he’s really not a great defender and operates mostly with the ball in his hands not a great offball player but I think you know as a little bit of a bigger wing out there you could use some depth in that area and then a couple other big men Precious Achua Chris Bucher are options kind of four or five hybrids give you some positional flexibility bush can shoot the three a little bit a little bit better than a Chua I think a Chua a little bit better of an interior player so if you’re looking for some of that four or five positional flexibility because Clint Capella you’re not running him out there at the four one of those guys could certainly be an option now some intriguing news that’s happened within the last 24 hours in the NBA just something to monitor for Philadelphia was started here with DeAndre Aton of course a center for the Blazers former top pick of the Phoenix Suns now in Portland until late yesterday when he finalized a contract buyout with Portland so he will be an unrestricted free agent assuming he passes waiverss on Wednesday so he can’t officially sign with the team until Wednesday but no one’s going to claim him and his big contract on waiverss we’ll see you know what kind of deal he ends up getting he was paid pretty highly for Portland but I expect him to get more of a one-year prove it deal for a team looking for some center minutes and then try to cash out next off season we’ll see if Philly is that destination for him and is that place where doesn’t really look to be you know the starting guy with Embiid but maybe he looks at Embiid in the injuries and he says you know what I’ll come in here hopefully get the Sixers get off Drummond and then you can see if Aton could provide you anything as you know that flex starter backup big of course you still have Autumn Bona to play a bunch of minutes as well also wanted to bring up this that happened with Malik Beasley he was due to get paid this off season had a really really good year for Detroit and was in line for a pretty solid contract he’s now being investigated for gambling allegations related to NBA games and prop bets some serious developments surrounding one of the top NBA free agents so you know not going to speak too much on you know is he guilty is he not whatever we’ll see what the results of the investigation are but this is definitely going to hurt his free agency could he be a player who sticks around in the open market for a little bit while this all kind of goes out and then has to sign for cheap late in the cycle could be something to watch out for again not on day one here but as we get deeper into the cycle someone that the Sixers could maybe try to snag for cheap depending on what does happen with his situation of course provided he’s not suspended or something like that some other free agent targets to round out the show Jake Laravia get sort of this doit all wing player who can shoot the three a little bit as well larry Nance your athletic big men four or five hybrid did have a knee injury last season only played about 20 games though torian Prince a veteran forward he’s been in the league for a million years didn’t have a great playoff run this season for Milwaukee but you know veteran three and D wing trey Lyles your typical stretch four there been in Sacramento for a little bit and then Delano Benon’s an interesting player he’s 6’9 plays like a guard um has good handles has good court vision never been able to develop that shot but another player with size where if the Sixers are looking for some more playmaking from that wing he could certainly be a good option as well the Sixers do want to make a trade of course you know with Andre Drummond and Kelly Uber’s contracts there’s a chance you could package those to make a move what picks could they attach the Sixers have five tradable first round picks right now they can trade 2026 if it’s top four so they can trade like that top four protection to another team they have 2028 they can trade either their own pick or they have the Clippers pick as well in 2028 then they can trade either 2029 or 2030 not both of them only one or the other and then they can trade their 2031 first if they keep 2030 they can trade their 2032 first if they keep 2031 because again you cannot trade your own first round picks in back-to back years they also have a bunch of second round picks they can move about eight tradable first round picks at the moment or excuse me second round picks at the moment that they could move if they would like to in some of these trades uh they have a 2027 Warriors Phoenix second round pick that’s the best of those two another Warriors in 2028 detroit in 2028 as well though although that’s top 55 protected so unless it’s a bottom five pick in the second round you’re not going to get that they have their own in 2029 Washington in 2030 a Phoenix Portland in 2030 that is the best of those two and then their own in 2031 and 2032 so really all this to say Sixers have some decent ammo if they do want to make a move in the coming days as the trademark market we’ve we’ve seen some moves happen really over the past couple of weeks they could look shake things up since they can’t really shake things up too much in free agency i wanted to bring this up really quickly before we hop out of here there’s just rumors kind of circling around right now that LeBron James could be looking for a trade out of Los Angeles he accepted his player option for this upcoming season and then Rich Paul his agent had this to say lebron knows the Lakers are building for the future he understands that but he values a realistic chance of winning it all we are very appreciative of the partnership we’ve had for eight years with Genie Bus and Rob Pelinka and consider Lakers as a critical part of his career i don’t know about you kind of sounds like something you say when you’re on the way out right so I’m not going to sit here and say LeBron’s 100% going to be traded but look it’s certainly an option something to at least keep your mind on as we move throughout the free agency cycle sounds like maybe he’s not in love with this sort of rebuild of sorts that the Lakers are going through although this could also just be leverage and a push to try to get the Lakers to really improve this roster as we head into the season maybe a Paul George for LeBron swap though you never know sixers do have some picks as we showed that they can play with all right free agency again just a few hours away name a player you want the Sixers to sign could be one of the guys you Get rid of Embiid, all $ problems solved
Don't see the sixers signing Grimes or Yab…
My mission is to get one person in the future draft 2029 or 2030 and the is the next center close to Chamberlain Mohamed Dabone 13yrd right now set to in the 2029 or 2030 draft!
The next Wedby
We're not going nowhere!
If Grimes wants to average that much, or even $20m/y, they'll have to back-end the deal. Which is very doable.
We still need a Young PowerForward 6'8 and a young Center 7'2 thats all
Yeah I think it’s time for imbiid to go
Paul George is not convincing at all. He is pretty replaceable at this point.
