These bas give you a participation trophy No the rookies All right So look it was I will say expected that I would get tremendous feedback on the Cedric Coward interview because we had talked about in the past when we had watched many of those things leading up It was this rare instance where it wasn’t like I was hearing the guy talk for the first time So I knew what we were getting into on Friday when he came into the studio I knew I had seen enough of the interviews and we had even played them on the show when I told you how impressed I was with him But even with that it was overwhelming the amount of people that reached out to me that had something to say about Cedric Coward being on the show and how either teams people saying I wish my team would have taken him or just obviously astonished that that is not that is not what a rookie sounds like And you guys know for the last 25 years I’ve brought in all manner of rookies right i’ve sat in the from from the OJ Mayos and the Hashim and the Deari Carols and the Sam Youngs to the Will Wade Baldwins to you name them right i’ve interviewed most of the draft picks right after they get drafted That has been common place and he’s he’s at the very very very top
It was so it was so crazy that I ran into somebody Friday night when I was out and they were like “Yo I watched an interview Is he just like that off camera too?” And I was like “Yes
he really is.”
It it was like that it was that amazing that they were the person was like “Yo is he really like that in real life?” I’m like “Yeah he’s
It’s not an act It’s not an act.” It just And obviously got to meet his family They were great and uh he talked about how great his support system is like his agent his agent and his his family and everybody and they were all they were all wearing coward jerseys They were all excited to be here Um and so that was super cool And so we had family coming in uh over the weekend and I didn’t get to come down They made the press conference at 6:00 on Friday night which made it very difficult to attend So I was not there You did go

All right So that was I did see some of the clips of Javon Small and uh Meshach Jamai Mhack from uh the University of Tennessee There is the picture of the three guys People immediately said “Well guess Luke Canard’s gone because Javon Small has got Luke Canard’s number.”

All right So yeah one of the things you mentioned he passed over was uh Tumasola the head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies is going to be coaching summer league this year We did get news this morning that said that he has added to his staff and I told you guys to try to Google this guy Penny Collins who is the head coach at Tennessee State is stepping down from his post at Tennessee State to take a job with the Memphis Grizzlies which just seems incredibly strange right like I mean What is the connection there and then you guys went and looked it up and sure enough evidently Penny Collins played with Tomas Eola in Finland
Yep They played together years ago It just so happened the head coach at Tennessee State University was a former teammate of Tomasa And so now he is leaving his post at Tennessee State to become an assistant with the Memphis Chris kind of a cool story Like what are the chances what are the chances that the head coach of Tennessee State was a teammate in Finland of some Finnish guy that played professionally over there

I mean he’s from Nashville too So he’s kind he’s kind of like be assistant coach for his home state team

where did where did Penny Collins play in college where was his college career cuz he went and obviously played overseas post college

I’m very pessimistic and and and it’s not about necessarily the running into screens or anything like that It is the strength of his arm his shoulder that is coming back right building up the strength there because it’s not as much running into things from what I gather It’s more of you go up for a rebound and somebody grabs your arm and pulls it back and it’s like that left arm is not that left shoulder is it have you built up enough strength to be able to withstand somebody yanking it out of the air because those kinds of things can happen and and you know that they’ve always been they’ve aired on the side of caution when it comes to So look I think we’ll do it like this right if he plays it’ll be an amazing surprise I’m not counting on it

uh he brought I he’ll be here tomorrow But the first thing he brought up he said when I was younger I was I watched Tony Allen highlights He said other kids were watching like scoring stuff like this is a synopsis but like he was like other kids were watching scoring stuff all that kind of thing And I was watching Tony Allen highlights and I was like okay I like that
And it seems believable
Yeah Like the way he plays you know what I’m saying like it’s not just I’m in Memphis kind of thing He was like I I was watching Tony High on and someone asked him about kind of being a dog Like where do you get that kind of mentality from he said I’ve always been like the guy like it’s never been like doing the little things never been like an extra thing for me I’ve always wanted to do those things
And I was like okay th it this is the kind of mentality they they’re starting to get around here where it’s like doing the diving for loose balls and it’s just in it’s just in my DNA And the other thing is this sometimes when you draft guys that have already been used to being a role player there’s no like one of the hardest things that we and we talk about this all the time It is there are stars and there are role players right and it is very difficult for the guy that has to defend rebound and stand in the corner That’s see that’s not an easy transition when you had the ball in your hands all the time Just not And we’ve seen all manner of players not be able to hand it handle it all that well right it’s hard to it’s hard to s as they say in the NBA star in your role right and Lord knows with every wing player they brought in here whether it was David Rody or whether it was Jake Laavier or whether it was Zire Williams or then even Vince Williams who struggled with it last year right what how can you play when the ball doesn’t go to you very much when you’re getting four shots when you’re getting eight shots right that is one of the things if this kid can grow into being a player you know he is comfortable not being the guy with the ball in his hands

great moments of the second round of the NBA draft Whether that was the whether it would have been the Grizzlies or whether it would have been any other team that moment was going to happen
And I’m glad it happened for uh for a player that they drafted

Number two uh Grizzlies Free Agency So the reason I’m mentioning this is because as you guys know I am a subscriber to my old buddy Mark Stein’s Substack And sure enough he put out uh a article that details all manner of like different rumors that are going on I’ll give you a couple that he had mentioned in there Full credit Uh he says the Hawks are now being frequently projected by rivals teams to be in pole position for Nquille Alexander Walker Um which wow it’s been a hell of a couple weeks for the Hawks

And rebuilding that as something that could really win around Trey Young Um you know they get Jayla Johnson back and they got Porzingis and they got Dyson they got Reese and they got a I mean if they go and get Nikil Alexander Walker as well another like guard that you could put next to Trey Young that can guard people um but can also do it on the offensive end So that was one they mentioned The Pistons he says uh are strongly expected to focus on Caris Levert That was one he mentioned Detroit uh Dennis Shruder uh coming off a deal and that he is expected to pro uh maybe go become the point guard in Sacramento
for Shruder He mentions he’s got a bunch of these on here Um some of them are super interesting But then as I’m scrolling down he says “Two significant potential surprise outcomes have materialized involving free agents as coveted as Nquille Alexander Walker Numerous rival teams have pinpointed Memphis as the team poised to enter Monday’s business at the forefront of the Tai Jerome chase
Ty Jerome Todd Jerome though was intent on securing a deal that starts at the full mid level after a breakout season in Cleveland So it remains to be seen how much the Grizzlies are actually willing to pay Jerome given their well chronicled determination to maintain sufficient financial flexibility to renegotiate and extend the contract of Jiren Jackson Jr and match any offers for restricted free agent Santi Aldama Okay first things first he’s hearing that from all this is the way this goes right uh the way this goes is you’re making your calls all around and they say “Where’s he going where’s he going where’s he going?” And he even says numerous things So people are telling him like “No Jerome’s going to Memphis
