Weird Jusuf Nurkic-Collin Sexton Trade: What are the Jazz and Hornets doing? | NBA News Reactions
what the what is this Colin Ston Yousef Nerkage deal where the Hornets and again big theme of the draft coverage was I think the Hornets front office is really good Um that’s like my take on this right now The Hornets front office is genuinely very very good They get Colin Ston and what projects potentially down the road in 2030 to be a potentially good second round pick for Ysef Nerk Question mark Who like honestly like it’s not news that like Nerkach isn’t always the easiest guy to be around it feels like for his teams And then on top of it like just isn’t very good anymore What am I What am I missing here because Colin Ston is like at the very least good Like he he’s good at basketball He averaged 18 points and four assists on 48 41 87 last year There are limitations and he’s probably best coming off the bench for sure but he’s definitely good at basketball Yeah I mean so I I’ve tried to look at this from every angle First I don’t understand why Utah had to give up a pick in this deal Like that that makes no sense to me Like
you traded away the better player Like whatever Um
and then it’s like there’s no contract Like there’s no advantage contractwise You know what I mean like they’re both expirings So it wasn’t even like oh if we’re Utah we get you know Sexton has two years and so we’re you know now Nerk is only one and we have a backup center I’m like if you wanted a backup center you could you could have got it way easier than giving up Sexton with a second round pick I I I don’t like this for Utah Why is this better than not just cutting Colin Ston
so that’s what I was going to say
Second round pick
That’s what I was going to say Just get rid of him like I I don’t know Um for Charlotte it’s interesting Um like I would bring Ston off the bench and if you want to Here’s what I will here’s what I think Saxon will help the Hornets do He will help them play competitive regular season basketball games They will play more competitive regular season basketball games than Nerkach would have helped them play competitive regular season basketball games And I think that’s important for the evaluation of Brandon Miller Coniple Liam McNilly hell LaMelo Ball you know now they got to figure out their center situation Um like I just said that Nerkish wasn’t going to help you win games He may have in Charlotte because they don’t have a whole lot else They got to figure this out in terms of if they want to play competitive games they need a real starting center But I I don’t mind this flyer for them You got a second round pick and Ston Like maybe he’s really good Maybe you find something here Maybe he loves being your third guard and you you know sign him to a longerterm deal this off season that’s manageable
Here here’s the thing that I can like I feel confident in for sure Right Colin Ston is definitely going to be tradable at the deadline
Sure Right
Yeah Like if a team you know is dealing with injuries and needs another ball handler in the same way that Dennis Shruder was like tradable deadline and turned into a pretty useful player for the Detroit Pistons down the stretch
Colin Ston’s going to be tradable for like a second round pick or two
You know what I mean And there are limitations Like we don’t want to overrate what Colin St He’s super aggressive and like tries really hard on defense but he doesn’t cover ground super quickly I don’t love his offball defense And then the ball can stick We’ll go with that The ball can stick in his hands a little bit Um but yeah man Like I This is one where I’m like “Okay what what is Utah cooking up?” Because why would you feel like you need to go get a center is kind of my question when that guy’s making the same amount of money why do you feel like you need to go out and get a center so much that you’re willing to give up a pick for with including a much better player in the deal to go get Nerkish like this makes me think like okay what are we doing with Walker Kessler here just point blank That was what my immediate reaction was is do they have something cooking with Kesler yeah I I guess I mean the easy answer here is also like that that back court was just going to get crowded right and they added Walter Clayton So like I I’m okay with them move I want to be clear I’m okay with them moving Colin Ston Totally
I actually would encourage it I just don’t feel like this is the right value in terms of a center that I don’t necessarily love and having to trade out the second with it If I was going to have to give up value to get off of Colin Saxon I would just keep him Like I I like fine And I guess if nobody values him around the league I’ll just keep him It just seemed like weird value for him Yeah So like again my question is why aren’t you just cutting him instead of giving up the second round pick with it like if you really feel that way why don’t you just cut him then but like feeding into the next point here is they make about the same you know Sexton 18.9 Nerkish 19.3 Do you know that maybe like Nerkitch is more willing to take you know less money in a buyout situation like is Nerkitch like if you talk to Nerkitch’s agents and you’re like “Okay Nerk is willing to take 5 million off of his deal to hit the open market.” You know what I mean
sure
Like is that a thing that’s there
yeah could be Is that worth Is that worth a second round pick could be If it’s like five million that’s about what a second round pick costs right if it’s if it’s a real dollar figure I can see it And they have a million of them like it’s whatever But yeah nothing about this deal on its own made sense logically So there has to be another shoe to drop
Sure
In some way It’s just what is that shoe I I don’t know what it is
This was very much a what like what who is getting traded for who and there’s draft capital Yeah I was going to say it’s not even who’s getting traded for who It’s Wait where is the draft capital going
yeah Yeah
Who’s getting the draft capital
i I I would have bet a lot of money it was going to Utah Like I I would have bet And then I may have questioned like Charlotte do you really need to be trading draft capital to bring in Saxon like as as much as I like it Um
well let’s talk about that real quick in terms of what Colin is for them right nerk is either a backup center or he’s like not on the team for Utah It’s whatever But I would imagine that like Charlotte really wants Sexton and thinks he’s like somewhat useful right because he’s a good basketball player Limited but a pretty good basketball player who can score and can at the very least run a second unit Honestly I’m wondering if he starts for them And if they go La La Lton Brandon Miller bring Con off the bench to start That’s kind of interesting
Sure And then like maybe you you know pull one of LaMelo and Colin early
to run the second unit
Maybe you pull Colin after four minutes You bring in Khan right and then you pull LaMelo at like the two-minute mark remaining in the first quarter and you bring back Ston and that’s the guy who’s running your second unit That’s kind of a pretty cool That’s a cool thing to me that works I I I noticed you stopped at the fourman whenever you were doing the starting lineup and and didn’t didn’t round that thing out with the center yet
I mean it’s going to be Miles Bridges and it’s going to be you know whatever they do at center Be another team that could do Don Sharp another team that could do Aon like whatever you want to do right
yep No
but yeah at this value I love it Absolutely love it Um I think he’ll he he makes a lot of sense Then again maybe there ends up being a role here that they like and it becomes a longer term thing Worst case scenario is you got a second round pick and nothing But I think most like like you mentioned earlier maybe you get another second Like you almost could end up netting two seconds for Yousef Nerkage which is good
And you already netted a firstrounder by taking him from Phoenix
I was going to say that Yeah So good business to your point right
no seriously I think the Charlotte Front Office is very good at this Like I I want to be like I’m not saying that I think they’re like no longer a bad front office I actually think the Charlotte Front Office is a good front office now They are doing everything right in terms of accumulating draft capital in terms of getting picks making sure that you handle assets in the right way And more than anything what I think they do really well is they time it really well They they seem to understand when a guy is not going to get more value than what he is going to get on the market and decide all right let’s do this right yeah And to be clear if we were doing our superlatives tonight and you ask me some of my favorite team drafts I liked what Charlotte did I liked their draft Sam Um I I liked all four picks to be quite honest with you and I thought all four were pretty good value
Yeah the the only thing that like I disagree with with this front office so far and what they’ve done is the Miles Bridges deal I think it was super gross to resign him frankly
But everything since then I think they’ve kind of just nailed it They’ve done what you’re supposed to do as a rebuilding team You accumulate assets You moved Terry Rosier for a good first round pick You are willing to take on the Nerkage deal You double dip on Phoenix by the way You pick the sucker at the poker table and you go “Okay we’re going to get three second round picks for uh Nick Richards and then we’re going to go back to Phoenix and we’re going to get a first round pick to take on the Nerkage deal right?” Like that was super smart I thought And then you look at this like they’ve done super well like all of this tracks to me I think they’ve done super they’ve done very smart work uh with this across the board
Yep Yeah And then the draft like you said go get winners Go get like real winning basketball players like Pon Cadel Liam McNeely Seion James Brian Kulkrunner all those dudes Kulkrunner like real defender who at the very least has potential to shoot as a big that’s a winning basketball player Seion James great defender unbelievable character from everything I’ve been told about his character like great human being Home run Khan and Liam are like two of the most competitive dudes you will find uh in terms of like trying to be great and willing to do what it takes like for the team in order for the team to be great I think super smart I think I am a I am a big fan of this front office now in Charlotte
Yep I as soon as they get rid of Miles Bridges Yeah I will say that once once that’s done I will feel better about what their front office has done

Pacers could use Sexton
Really odd deal. As a Jazz fan, I'm hoping it's part of a larger trade to come.
Whaddayaknow… according to the internet, both players have the same agent.
Having this discussion without factoring in the agent at hand(Klutch Sports, Rich Paul) is negligent at best – that likely answers 90% of the questions posed here and opens up a more nuanced discussion about agent control and politics in the NBA
If the Jazz fall out of the Top 8 in the 2026 draft the pick goes to the Thunder. They’re trying to suck without getting fined by the league. And if you waive Sexton it stays on the books.
Some of the reasons are counter intuitive why this makes sense. All predictions, as in most years, are that the Hornets are predicted to be one of the worst NBA teams. The Jazz want to develop players while at the same time lose games so they don't lose their top 8 protected pick.
The Hornets were a very bad team who made the Jazz work very hard to avoid winning games this past season. If there is any team in the league besides the Wizards whom the Jazz want to be more competitive and win games it is the Hornets. Collin Sexton definitely makes them a better team and the Jazz definitely know, when he is in the game he can help you win the game, so if you want to lose games like the Jazz, you have to bench him. He typically will help you raise your win total by 4 or 5 games in a year if you give Sexton the playing time he justifies.
The payoff for the Jazz will be when the Hornets most assuredly win more than 30 games this coming season and the Jazz maintain their position in the 2026 draft by not being forced to do a hard tank to lose more games than the Hornets. Part of the trade is not what you are getting back but making one of your likely chief competitors in the 2026 lottery better. From the Jazz' perspective, if they could put John Collins on a team like the Nets or Wizards they would also have a hard time losing more games than the Jazz.
Sexton PR is in the mud. Utah Jazz are another team ruining careers.
Jazz held on to him for too long and then teams know they gotta trade him
This was the promise made to them by Utah for not taking Ace Bailey. Duh.
Utah paid a tank tax. Their tank got stronger and it made it harder for the Hornets to tank.
As far as "why not just cut" I would imagine Sexton wasnt agreeing to a buyout and they had to trade him because Sexton didnt want the stigma of being waived and signed to a small deal, plus the Hornets have his bird rights.
I have never heard that before this year. "The hornets front office is really good" thats so refreshing as a hornets fan. Jeff Peterson for GM of the year.
I think that the jazz are trying to make room for their young players. Especially their young guards. This is a dumb trade but I think that's the reasoning. Why they had to give up a pic when they were giving up the better player doesn't make any sense and never will. I watched Bill Simmons this morning and he thinks it's part of another deal. He's pretty good at figuring these things out so maybe he's right.😊
Jazz had too many guards and wanted a backup center. The money is nearly identical, IDK why the pick was included. But this rebalances the roster in Utah
Never in my life did I think I’d hear the words “the Hornets front office is really really good” Go ahead and build the Jeff Peterson statue
Klutch orchestrated the Lonzo deal on Saturday and the Sexton/Nurkic deal on Sunday. They rep all 3. Sexton entering the last year of his contract. I have no idea why Utah gave away a SRP except they lost all leverage after drafting another guard?
Maybe it was a deal to make your draft work beforehand. I owe you
This was just perfect for Good Old Sexton 👍
As a Hornets/Bobcats/Hornets again fan. Thanks for the praise of our front office. Outside of that, mind your business. Miles is our guy. He has been our most consistent player and we forgave him for his personal moment of indiscretion. You can take your fair weather support and stick it where the 🌞 don't shine😂
@9:23 "No longer a bad front office" is right because it's not the same front office & ownership. This new regime is just getting a full year under their belts.
It's supposedly "super gross" to resign the most consistent, injury-free player to the most team friendly contract on the team? Like some other team won't pick him up, smh. 😒
Dudes keep on hating on miles, dude has paid his dues
Jazz main motivations:
– Give more minutes to Keyonte George, Collier, and Walter Clayton Jr
– keep an expiring contract so that they use it to take on longer salary at the deadline?
Id also assume that Sexton's Agent (Rich Paul) used his influence to get Sexton moved to a different team if contract extension negotiations weren't going anywhere.
So basically the Jazz are paying a 2nd to maintain an expiring contract with the hopes of using it at the trade deadline? And with Sexton off the roster those younger guards can get minutes right away to start the season instead of waiting until post all star break. That's honestly my best guess at their angle on this.
Charlotte helped Utah get Ace Bailey so they owed them by not trading back to Washington
Where is this notion he’s best coming off the bench when there’s nothing to suggests he’s best coming off the bench and everything suggest he’s best starting. That’s weird . He’s. A starter
Jazz gave him away, awful trade.
