2025 NBA Free Agency LIVE Watch-Along | What Moves Can The Raptors Make?

hello everybody Welcome back to Amateur Sports for tonight’s NBA free agency live watch along June 30th 6:00 p p.m Eastern That is when NBA free agency kicks off I think every year or so now It’s it’s about this It’s maybe I don’t know It’s always around this time whether it’s this day specifically or you know July 1st July 2nd whatever it is it is nearly time for NBA free agency to unofficially begin I I guess technically players aren’t exactly signing today It’s um it’s kind of stupid how it works to be honest I mean so NBA free agency begins July 6th at 600 p.m Eastern time but you have a week to negotiate those contracts in the leadup to actually being able to sign on the specific day July 6th June 6 sorry June 30th at 6 PM Eastern is when you’re allowed to negotiate with players that are not returning to their team So uh if you’ve seen any news today broken by Shamsania of ESPN if you’ve seen any news all of the news is of players resigning for the team that they are currently on or it’s players getting bought out by the team they’re currently on There’s no news of players signing for new teams All of that will drop early as 6 PM Eastern because that is when teams are allowed to start talking to free agents But like when a deal gets revealed at 600 p.m Eastern time exactly like we obviously all know what’s going on and there’s tampering But we kind of just allow the tampering to take place It’s just accepted that Yeah that’s fine As long as it doesn’t leak before 600 p.m Eastern no tampering So it’s kind of dumb how it works but essentially players can start negotiating with other teams at 6 PM Eastern time today They can make those contracts official on July 6th at 600 p.m Eastern time But when Shams breaks it it’s official I mean it’s going to happen I I can’t even recall a moment where Shams was incorrect about a player signing somewhere getting traded somewhere I’ve seen him incorrect about the NBA draft I remember when Brandon Miller went third overall to the Charlotte Hornets Uh he was saying for that uh or was it second overall uh yeah I think Brandon went second overall Uh he was adamant that it was going to be Scoot Henderson going second overall or um anyways whoever went second he was saying they were going to go third and WAN had kind of had a bit of a back and forth That’s the only time I can recall him being wrong So basically when Sean’s reports it it’s it’s gospel It’s going to be true Uh as for today as it comes to the Raptors well I got news for you guys Uh the Raptors have no money Like the Rabbs don’t have any money to spend So unfortunately like you you know we usually uh do these streams not thinking the Rabbs will do anything but at least like please maybe they signed this guy Maybe they sign this guy on the mid-level exception My understanding is they have no cap space and that like they can’t do anything unless they make a trade So you know they maybe they maybe they make a trade today but that seems unlikely So uh yeah I I I wouldn’t expect I would not expect much Uh I would not expect anything If the Raptors do anything uh then we’ll have some luck for this stream because I don’t a video about Elijah Martin That goes up uh Friday morning And Friday morning you know I’m sitting on my porch you know basking in the sun and then 9:00 a.m Messiah Jerry fired by the Raptors Oh [ __ ] And uh Messiah got fired by the Raptors right at the start of a threehour meeting at work So I basically had to just kind of follow the story while in a meeting Uh and then after the meeting I have half days on Friday After the meeting at noon I I I started going to work on that Messiah Jiri video But uh just when I thought I was out I had to do another video But uh so so anyways I probably would another video I would have done an amateur answers which has been delayed That will be out Might have to just maybe I’ll just do like two weeks Well that’d be a long I don’t know I I got to do one for the draft and I’ll probably do one for free agency We’ll see what the Raptors do But um I’m going to be uh do it I I I got I got a bunch of comments saved up from the from the draft which I’ll be reacting to and I may do a separate video for I mean the Raptors may not do anything So uh we’ll see I’ve got them loaded So if you guys were looking forward to an amateur answers I’ll do them It’s any would want to come here anyways Clifford Omarui uh Raptors did sign him as an undrafted free agent last night Yes Or not last night Um after the after the draft concluded Yeah Uh Raptors could wave some players I guess and make a bit of room You’re right They could wave AJ Lawson and Colin Castleton for no repercussions Do I think Chris Buché is gone i know Chris Buchet is gone Thanks again the need Honestly like I said after the draft for the backup center you know Barnes can do it Murray Boils can do it um Mobile can do it And the thing about those three players is that can not only can they do a job there they can play with Purle as well where if you sign a traditional center that guy cannot play in a lineup with Purle So I I can kind of understand like why the Raptors don’t want to get tied down to that backup C The issue is absolutely you know when Purle’s injured now you have no center So I’ve always wanted like the third choice center the guy who’s not in rotation really but is when Purle’s injured I just like you know rim protection Rim protection’s expensive That’s the thing It’s expensive to sign rim protection So that’s why the Raps have just never been able that’s why they struggle to do it yearbyear because they’re so close to the cap that they can’t really afford it So I understand why it I mean I to a certain extent I understand why it hasn’t happened I I still think they should have done something to to address it but for this year I wouldn’t count it and I can understand why Mitch Mart signed trade Yeah Apparently Bob McKenzie has reported that Um not exactly a well-kept secret some allegations that tampering will have has taken place but um the the Rap the Raptors the Leafs are apparently getting a uh who are they getting Nick acquisition phase They’re still in the talent acquisition phase They’re not finding the roster They’re acquiring talent So the draft needs to be treated in a vacuum of the Raptors finding the best player available at pick number nine and pick number 39 Right now now though that’s done We got the best players available at 9 and 39 Now you got to start roster building Now you have to figure out okay is the backup rim protection going to come from Barnes Murray Boils Mo if so okay now we have to fear our shooting cuz I I can I can I can believe that the backup center committee can get it done I I cannot and do not believe that there is enough shooting for this team to be successful Absolutely Something needs to be done not necessarily today but in the off season to get better shooting on he can also carry the ball Uh it fortifies your defense when you’re on 10 men as well It was just very strange coaching I’m a much lower Toronto team I support England World Cup I well my half my sure that’s how I explain it That’s how I’ll explain it the best I can Uh if RJ Barrett like R.J Barrett scored 21 points per game he’s making $27 million That’s like not a ton in today’s NBA and RJ is a guy making less than 30 million a year putting up over 25 and five You don’t think team value in that production versus contract that’s exactly what I’m saying That is like pinpoint exactly what I’m saying And if they did like it’d be a lot easier to trade him But I I agree There’s not a ton of value out there for him you’re getting more value by keeping him because he is still a good player But that’s exactly what I’m saying It it’s just teams that are trying to build Like RJ Barrett plays like RJ Barrett’s play style is that of your top guy He is not good enough to be your top guy if you are a contender if you are a consistent playoff team He just is not He just is not unfortunately and he doesn’t have the skill set of a player that can scale back their role and continue to be very effective So like not as good as him but like Aaron Gordon on the Denver Nuggets Aaron Gordon on Orlando much more lead role higher scoring higher usage type of guy but goes to Denver scales back his role he becomes way more valuable with the Denver Nuggets as a player in a lesser role than he was with the Orlando Magic because he’s a very good defender Now he can’t shoot very well he did in the playoffs but he’s not a fantastic shooter But the defense is enough that makes him much more valuable when his role is scaled down like that Andrew Wiggins and the Minnesota Timberwolves Andrew Wiggins was super talented high usage highscoring player but Minnesota were going nowhere with him as the lead the lead guy Goes to Golden State scales back his role becomes much more focused on defense three-point shooting in instantly becomes way more valuable as a player They have those skills to they have those skills to scale back RJ Barrett doesn’t have that right now Like if he develops it then great Like what a what an amazing player that the Raptors have but it hasn’t come yet He’s still very young He could do it He talked about it in his postseason press conference He needs to work on shooting in defense That’s great If he gets better like we’ve got to we’ve got to steal the player But until we see it we can’t really we can’t really We can’t really say it’s going this season Trey Young uh is I I still think he’s fantastic I know he sucks on defense but he’s just an absolute hub offensively Amazing scorer amazing playmaker and they just got so many big bodies around him Like Jaylen Johnson was fantastic last season before his injury I think he’s got all-star potential Porzingis if he can stay healthy like great addition to that team Ace Newell I think is a solid draft pick They have New Orleans’s unprotected pick for next year to add on to this team Um Nikquille Alexander Walker would fit right into that team building Like that’d be a great pickup for not Capella anymore but that’s like a that’s a big team That’s a really good defensive team that’s going to that that’s a that’s a sleeper team I think could uh yeah I think now finally the year the
