What will big contract extensions for SGA, Chet and J-Dub mean for the Thunder? | NBA Today
the Thunder have a rare combo in the age of the second apron going into next season star power and they have depth their big three combines to make just under $60 million but you can see here some tough roster decisions they could be ahead if all three stars sign Max extensions this off season as in two years they would combine to make 151 million that would be higher if JDub makes all NBA again so the Champs were the second youngest team to win a title which typically means extensions are coming so Bobby if you look at the money moves that this team can make what are they trying to get done here in Oklahoma City
well you look at Shay Gilders Alexander who’s supermax extension eligible four years 283 the number came down a little bit and then Jaylen Williams and Chad Homegrren are both extension eligible everybody’s figuring out can you keep all three guys and yes you can because what Sam Pressy their general manager has done he’s staggered the contracts here shay doesn’t start until two years from now when he signed Isaiah Hartinstein he put a team option in there isaiah Joe Aaron Wiggins the same thing the beauty of Oklahoma City and how they’re built and yes we’d like to throw away round dynasty is all the draft equity that they have coming in they have four potential of four first round picks so when Lou Dort gets expensive you can maybe replace I don’t want to send Lou Dort out already you can replace him with Kase Walls and then when Isaiah Hartinstein gets expensive you could replace him with Thomas Sorber who they drafted in the first round and you can keep your core three players in that we just mentioned but you’re right they are in a unique position but we do mention this dynasty title basically the minute a team wins a championship i think of Boston last season and they are such a far cry the year before
denver the year before even though we know Jeff Green and Bruce Brown are probably going to be out because but yes like we we do this all the time and Boston a year ago we were talking about them being in a position to win many many titles for years to come and it’s so unfortunate it’s heartbreaking what happened to Jason Tatum and we wish him all the best but it seems like we’re in just a really fragile state when you’re talking about long runs here even for OKC
the thing is the rules are designed to prevent another Warriors run where we saw the Warriors win four titles over was it six years but they got to that there I think five times
the rules are designed to break teams like that up and so actually you would think a mid-market team like the Thunder would benefit from that because you would think it would be the big market teams that would have the dynasty as well as it’s interesting it turns out the first test case of the new rules are going to be the thunder here’s the thing sam Prey has known these rules were coming for three years and as Bobby described there has been trying to prepare for it doesn’t mean it’s going to work but he’s trying to brace his team the best they can and I think they’re in as good a position as they possibly could dream of
yeah and I’ve had conversations with my 305 brother George Sedano he he spent some time around these guys and he let me in a little bit about this team because I was I was I was I needed to understand this team this is a very young team and they’re very very wise be beyond their years and they understand the pecking order they understand the hierarchy and it’s not just on the basketball court they understand it in life they understand it when it comes to the dollars this is a team who understands that Shay is the guy he is going to get majority of the money they understand that Jay Dub is the next guy he is going to get majority of the second amount of money and then Chad understands he is the third guy he has no problem with being the third guy he understands that the third guy on the championship roster is better being than the first guy on a terrible roster so these guys understand the pecking order of a young team so they are planning to stick together and be together and ride this dynasty out they are egoless and that’s why this is going to last and I think to your point about Chad Hungry and I totally agree not only is he cool with it he prefers being the third guy because he can have nights now where maybe he gives you an eight or 10 point game boards and blocks a couple shots and he’s lauded for that if you slide over one seat and you’re the number two guy the responsibility level is completely different so these are unique personality types it all works for them they’re coached by the right guy and their star is the right guy for them to gravitate towards so they look like they are positioned a little bit differently than some of these other teams
actions over words though that all sounds great how will they handle their contracts because if they want every dollar which they’ve earned they’re going to have a hard time keeping it all together
so what’s the to-do list Bobby what is the first thing this off seasonason if you’re the Oklahoma City Thunder
i think it starts with Shay i mean you want to lock him up for four years
but you ask him to maybe take a little little less
well if he does then it’s a domino effect for Chad and Jaylen because how does Chay Gildas Alexander take less and the other two players don’t
so that might be the sacrifice even if it’s an extra I don’t want to talk for Shay and his money is an extra eight or n million that might be the sacrifice there but it’s going to be an interesting summer and certainly Shay could wait until another year he could do five years if he wanted here but that’s the my first to do is Shay and that sets the table for everyone else [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause]
I’m joined by Brian Windhorst, Bobby Marks, Tim Legler and Udonis Haslem on the NBA Today Free Agency Special to discuss potential contract extensions for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Jdub and Chet’s contract wouldn’t start until 2 more seasons and Shai’s contract wouldn’t start until 3 more seasons. Plus everybody is forgetting that the cap is going up 10% every year.
They are all deserving of whatever they can get. But if Shai takes a little less to keep this team together, he will show that he is this generation's Tim Duncan. The others will follow suit if he leads. Cost of living in Oklahoma is way less than NY or LA; that could be an advantage. Beat the system with culture and character. *Shai's decision will probably have the greatest impact on the Thunder having enough money to keep his bro Lu Dort on the team. I could see all 3 extending on the same day, all taking a little less. All 3 at the same press conference putting the whole NBA on notice, The Thunder are here to stay for a long time!
Sam Presti will know how get it done
😊awesome 😮
That Thunder has 14 players signed and is scheduled to place their two new draft picks under contract, too. Impressive.
Chet isn’t a max player
I ain’t been here in a min!
Guys they will be fine, warriors made it work for so long
DO NOT GET RID OF LOU, he’s the best 3 & D in the league!!! You cannot replace that
All three guys about to sacrifice some cash to keep this thing going
There pretty good 😊😊😊, Go Thunders ……….
The OKC Thunder, fresh off a championship win, face a pivotal decision: maintain their winning core or rebuild for the future. While their current core is young and promising, financial realities and potential player departures could force them to make tough choices. The team's strong position in the draft, with multiple first-round picks, allows them to replenish their roster and potentially add more pieces to compete for future titles.
It's unrealistic! The OKC Thunder are different. If they proceed with this core group of players, it will disrupt the successful system they've established, which benefits both the organization and the league! Consider Harden, Durant, Ibaka, Collison, and WESTBROOK… they all served their time honorably and now play more significant roles elsewhere. As the saying goes, if it isn't broken, don't try to fix it. Otherwise, you'll find yourself in a situation like the small-market Milwaukee Bucks…
I am perplexed about your expectations; it is a youthful team! (OKC Thunder) This is the foundation of their organization's philosophy with the Thunder… Rapid recovery, swift rotations, prompt evaluations, and quick retooling. If they maintain an older player on the team like the Milwaukee Bucks, it could spell disaster!
chet is not a max player, at least yet
I don’t wanna hear a word out of Haslem’s mouth! Dude slept so hard on OKC.
Sam will sit down with the 3 of them and ask them if they want to keep this going. If they win another title, I bet they all sacrifice. If they don't, then it's anyone's guess.
