Kings After Schroder AND Russ?! Monk to Detroit?!

Kings After Schroder AND Russ?! Monk to Detroit?!

it’s been a few hours since our live stream ended
Yeah
we were recording this at 9:09 p.m Pacific time It was like five six hours ago Fred Catz puts out that the king’s intruder agreed to a deal right but no terms and then nothing since then
Nothing But then there’s enough smoke right now to suggest that maybe the Kings are in on both Westbrook and Shruder
which we heard rumblings all day So yeah
And then Jake Fischer puts this out
Oh
an emerging option for the King Sources say “Is Detroit trading for Kings Guard Malik Monk sounds like there’s a chance this deal if agreed to could turn into a signed trade that brings Dennis Shruder to Sacramento.” So so much here to process Morgan
Um do you want to process it first or do you want to tell me how you’re feeling first
um okay I Well you know me I’m trying I I’m trying this thing where I can’t I don’t get premad at things
or pre-upset pre- frustrated This is all rumors and speculation Nothing’s done yet
Yeah But on the surface I go what is this whole like motivation that you feel that you have to have Shruder and Westbrook and by doing that you lose Malik when it’s like just sign one of those guys keep Malik and then if you’re and I know you probably need to trade Malik or because he’s that deal that I think he’s like 18 million 20 million in a player option for 21 You have all these guards and because you have so many other shitty deals on the
team right now That’s probably one that’s easily moved It just feels weird that like you’re going to trade a guy that is one of the better six men in the league I mean if this works out for Detroit that’s a home run for them Home run
I mean they lose Shruder Beasley but they like replace them with Caris Levert Malik Monk upgrade
Yeah Um so my thought is just it it just feels weird to me It seems like the Kings are so dead set on adding Westbrook and Shruder I know those guys are close They played together in OKC in LA But I’m just from a Kings perspective I’m like I just feel like Malik even if people are telling us there’s multiple reports that say like “Oh his value is not as high as you think.” I personally have a hard time believing it Maybe that’s the case right now But you’re telling me down the road if the Kings with a point guard whether Shruder or Westbrook get Malik in the fold maybe they can rehab that a little bit move him later
because you saw Malik Monk when he was put in the right role the right role for him how good of a player he can be Um that role was in that six-man position And even when he was moved into that starting role because things were changing always changing bodies whatever in and out of the rotation whatever it’s like he stood up to the challenge the plate was trying to evolve his game even as a guard even when De’Arren left like understood what he needed to do with a point guard mentality like was down to take that on And I think you know him being coachable in those ways shows what type of player he’s really matured into And you’re going to lose him in these prime years if this is the case And that that sucks for that reason And it sucks because he’s a fan favorite The energy he brings and and you don’t I don’t think you have to do that right and I I think because you could just sign Shruder into your mid level
okay
and keep Bunk But instead what it seems like Sacramento is trying to do is they’re trying to be like you know you know what we don’t want to dip into the mid level the $14 million mid level We’ll tra sign and trade We’ll do a sign and trade get Shruder send Monk to Detroit We’ll pay Shruder whatever Get Westbrook with some of that money too And then we still have the full mid-level to go I mean there’s no real free agent I don’t think out there that you’d want to spend that much money on it but you can also trade into it Now is there a team that is willing to like give you one of their guys that you could trade into it and you give up maybe one young player or you give up a pick i don’t But who is that but it it this also all comes back to what we were saying and kind of doing on our 4hour watch party stream today was looking it it we spiral back to the Zack Lavine contract and because of the Zack Lavine contract it’s kind of forcing you into all these things because otherwise then you have Malik Monk and his contract in in what you’re just average for those years while paying him that money you know over you know over $20 million not next year But like or not this year but the next year
and in the player option that last year
So you go more in this direction with veteran
you’re getting older
player Yeah I don’t know
You’re getting older and you’re getting maybe two stop gap players Maybe you get both Westbrook and Shruder
And then I guess it depends on what you would do at the mid level But on the surface like right now I’m processing going I I just don’t completely get it And it feels to me like maybe you know Scott Perry’s gonna have a different viewpoint on Malik He wasn’t the guy that acquired Malik He’s not the guy who resigned him And you know I’m guessing he looks at Malik as like yeah he’s not the two-way contract or the two-way guy that I want on my team It’s not like he’s got tremendous size but like Malik has value He’s an incredible athlete a great pick and roll player a spark off the bench I just have a hard time believing that like he can’t fetch something more valuable than doing a sign and trade for Shruder where you you could just sign Shruder
And that’s what that’s what kills me about it because I think you have to remember when you’re in this small market and when you have assets to trade you have to make the right trades You have to make the right moves And that’s why even like you you go back to the deer and trade and you go “Okay well that didn’t make sense.” Jeez that scared me The wind Okay Your reaction scared me
Really okay Um uh sorry But no so then you think about these trades I mean you even go back to the trade that everyone hates talking about Tyrese and Sabonis you know Um that was more a move that I guess led to some success out of all of this but not long-term success because look what obviously Tyrese was doing now Obviously now he’s in a weird place with his health and everything but still you can spiral down all these different ways but when you have an asset here you have to do the right things with it
Yeah I just think there could be a different move that could be made instead of that And like okay so let’s just play this out You do the sign and trade you get Shruder you need a point guard Everyone I mean I’ve talked about this since this first came out like a week ago I’m like dude I you know Shruder to me is more on a good team Like he’s a guy coming off your bench but I get why the Kings would like Shruder He pushes the pace He He play He’s long He’s athletic good in the pick and roll He’s kind of feisty Got a little dog to him intense And what Westbrook’s the same way with the intensity and stuff but I I start looking I’m like you’re going to have like one of the oldest starting lineups in the league one of the oldest teams in the league and in a league where I’m like you don’t need to get older Like we spent all this off season talking about hey get younger We want to see more of the young guys and let’s develop that And I get you’re stuck with certain elements of this but you don’t now you’re going you’re you’re literally choosing to get older
because if you have one or two older guys or veteran leaders or whatever um then there’s still going to be roles and opportunities for these younger players to get experience on the floor where this feels like now like you’re kind of saying it’s a if they go in the direction of Shruder Westbrook then you would also still have Lavine Demar
Yeah
And
Sabonis
Sabonis And then you have all your young guys just chilling
And that’s the other thing is like younger guys I mean however you want to put it
I also thought it’s really important going into the season to make sure like Keegan’s not taking a backseat offensively I mean he drafted this guy pretty high Um and I think there’s been so much put on his plate from a defensive standpoint It’s not allowing him
to do a lot offensively And that that’s challenging right and then maybe he’s too tight There’s so much on his plate And then same thing with Keon where you’re just like I need these guys to be able to be aggressive and get the shot opportunities and just be able to show me what they can or cannot do
Yeah Because these guys on this team that are either coming to this team or on this roster right now are not here to not shoot the basketball You know Lavine Demar Russ Uh
I do think Russ will set guys up
I I I do I agree with that too But that still like still
Yeah
Still
I I and I’m just trying to understand the path because I understand like okay Scott’s not going to be able to do everything he wants because of some of the contract limitations that are currently he he has on the on the team right now but like okay you’re adding older guys to that And I think the push back would be yeah but you have to also understand we’re trying to establish a culture of and identity here in Sacramento that we play with toughness and edge and all this stuff But I’m like you’re not
I would understand that more if you’re adding Shruder and Westbrook to a team that
had a whole bunch of young guys and it’s like hey you need we got to establish this with some guys who have been around experienced who have been through some tough times who’ve been in the playoffs and they know what it takes and they bring it in Like I’m not disputing the competitive nature those guys would bring to Sacramento I just don’t know that it would have the impact of shifting the culture
Basically the mix that’s there now like as is if added with Shruder and Russ It’s just weird It’s just I think that’s the best way to explain It’s weird Um wouldn’t you rather like lean into like like we mentioned some of the young guys but even like Nate Clifford like I want to see him play
Just even talking about this is actually making
Okay No remember No no no Do this with me We don’t get premed and I’m just frustrated
You’re pre frustrated
No it’s just it’s called a human emotion and I’m [ __ ] frustrated
Put it in your uh
capsule
Is that what you do you put it in your cap My therapist said to put it in the capsule
Put in your capsule Relax Nothing’s here But we’re just
This is where we’re at in the 9:00 hour at the start of free agency And so
I mean I’m very much like let me see how this plays out because the last thing I want to do is like I can lose something and it’s like oh I stressed over nothing So I’m I’m fascinated by this I didn’t think we’d get to the point where I I’m not surprised that Malik may be getting moved this off season I’m more surprised that it would be in a move to get Dennis Shruder in a signed trade And I know this is not probably a little unfair but I’m also going the Pistons like signed him as a free agent in the middle of the season after he got waved by the Utah Jazz Like
and we’re now we’re trading Malik Monk
Well and that’s the thing I I don’t think we’re being Homer crazy to say that there’s value to Malik Monk I mean just a year ago or whatever it was he was you know runner up for six men of the year Six man of the year like the role changed like
no it’s funny though but if you see some of the stuff on social media from like I know Damian’s tweet about it Matt there there’s been others too have said that
and I know they talked about the radio show even Ham they were talking about how like Monk’s value in free agency isn’t what we all thought it was He didn’t have like 18 teams knocking on his door Maybe he got some lower level deals and that actually the Kings
paid more than maybe other teams were willing to pay And so it’s not like he did the Kings a favor and all this stuff but I just I don’t know I’ve seen Malik play enough basketball I understand his shortcomings and like he’s not the best defender even though I think he’s taken strides in that He’s a supreme athlete He brings effort I think he he brings a level of energy to a game that can really jolt a whole team And I I think not only teammates feel it but you know fans feel it too And so I think there’s a deep connection there And I’m not sitting here acting sitting here today acting as if the Kings are trading some allNBA guy but I just think in the context of this possible deal I I don’t completely get it So
that’s it That’s all that’s I that’s again it’s the same thing whenever we for the four hours we’re talking about the draft picks and people are like well it’s not like they’re going to do anything next year It’s like no [ __ ] Like no one’s saying that We’re just talking about why there’s value in them seeing getting experience and you know finding minutes because the team is going to be what it is and you’d rather try and start to see if you have a future with any of those younger pieces And then with someone like Malik Monk no one’s sitting here and saying that he’s all NBA or anything It’s just more of the value of what he can add to the depth of a roster and that is important in this league And that’s and that’s what I’m saying like he’s a role he’s a role player on so many teams in this league and that you can get value for a role player
Imagine if he was getting some minutes next to Shrruder sometimes or Westbrook like what would that look like because we’ve seen him next to Fox where there were moments last year where like dude Malik’s playing some of his best basketball ever and it was like he’s next to Darren Fox and that’s allowing him to do some things and so yeah you know I I just also you know on a different note I do worry about spacing too like Sabonis and Westbrook like that’s not great for spacing purposes Um same in in some extent with with Shruder too and uh Sabonis So um I’m eager to see how it plays out And of course we will drop something as soon as it it comes out But we were like you know what let’s hop in here tonight and do a temperature check And so we want you to let us know how you’re feeling about
the situation uh with Sacramento and kind of where they’re headed I’m of the belief that you should be doing everything you can to get young players opportunities and get younger more athletic more size And I think the Kings have done that in how they have addressed the draft Yeah
But I also want to see those guys play [Music] Yeah
Everybody get some rest Uh free agency started today but you know it keeps going and who knows when all this stuff will break Let us know how you’re feeling about things What do you think about the idea of like Shruder in maybe Westbrook in maybe another play or two in midle at the mid level and Malik Monk out where are you feeling what should the kings do please let us know in the comments below Hit the thumbs up and subscribe

  1. Totally agree with Deuce at 1:31. It would be great for the Pistons if they could get Monk. But if the Kings lose Malik they’re gonna be screwed. It also raises the question of whether or not Deebo, Domas, or someone else is next if Perry somehow trades Malik

  2. Hawks trade a 2nd rounder for NAW

Kings trade a guy whose 4 years younger and a better player for a Schroeder???

Something doesn't make sense. Wish the Wolves had matching salary for Monk, but DiVincenzo is too cheap and they don't have a $5M guy to add on.

  3. Totally agree on not moving Monk in this scenario – but what’s not being talked about is what do the minutes look like for Keon and to a lesser extent Devin, if you’re adding both Russ and Schroeder? There’s a roster imbalance but adding 2 veteran guards isn’t really solving that in any way.

  4. This is so stupid. The fans in Sacramento clearly loved Monk and don't want to see him go, so what is this bullshit "culture" that people like Matt George are talking about? Malik Monk actually fits this culture a lot better than Dennis Schroder does. Remember Monk and Westbrook on the Lakers? Monk was doing what Westbrook was supposed to be doing!

  5. Tell me this is all a
Smoke screen and we are sign and trading for Ivey and the hold up is working out the extension with agent, please!🙏

  6. Thank you Duece!!!! The only one calling this out. This is such a bad move and all sac media are trying to sell us on this bullshit.

  7. Suddenly Trae Young or Lamelo Ball don’t sound as bad lmao 😂 Getting old guys who can’t shoot and don’t have great assist to turnover ratios when the kings lacked shooting and a legit playmaker.. Truthfully both Wes and Dennis seem like a downgrade from Monk. If we did this to get a star level forward I would get it, but it feels like we’re shuffling pieces to get expiring or short term contracts so that in a year or two we’ll have a ton of cap space to maybe do something?? 🤷‍♂️ As of right now tho we’re just stocking up on guards again and ironically got rid of a strong guard entering his prime for two past their prime guards…

  8. So Kings trade Monk for Schroeder and sign Westbrook. That would leave the Kings’ MLE available for another move. If they were to use their MLE to trade for a forward like Herb Jones this deal would look a lot better.

  9. I have been a season ticket holder since 1985 if they trade Malik Monk for a player I am done as a season ticket holder. Vivek you don’t know how to manage a team. Take notes look what Thunder just did

  10. After the kast game of the season and all the reports about Vivek's meddling that followed, I decided im done.

After 25 years of being a Kings fan, i wont do it anymore. Not until Vivek is gone and/or the org demonstrates that it is competent and can sustain success. Im not a loser, so qhy would i want to continue identifying and rooting for this BS? Sac and the fans deaerve better, and ill be honest…once you rip the bandaid off, its easy to find another team to support.

This franchise is a joke thats not funny. Its heartbreaking and sad.

  11. I'm not a Kings fan. Your former game broadcaster was very easy to dislike. Malik Monk is the effin man and signed cheap. Maybe new GM, did you just get a new one ..

  12. Not saying this news isn't possible, but why is everyone reacting as if it's a done deal? I love Kings fans though lmaoo we are so dramatic and we're not even 24 hours into free agency. I'm willing to see Scott Perry cook first

  13. I think offensive minded combo-guards are just not valued around the league right now. Simons was traded for an aging Jrue Holiday and his massive contract and Sexton was dumped for Nurkic.

  14. Keep Monk is Sacramento! He’s a true King and he has love for our fan base, I feel like it’s more than basketball for him.🦁👑

  15. I knew it man . We took Monte for granted . He couldn’t even do his job correctly because of Vivek!! If Monte had full control , we wouldn’t be in this terrible situation
